With this Fade To Black guitar lesson series we are gonna tackle one of my favorite Metallica songs in it's entirety.
Fade To Black has lots of interesting guitar parts to dig our teeth into including arpeggiated picking, fast palm muted rhythms, single note triplet sequences and fast repetitive legato licks and more!
In this Fade To Black guitar lesson series of videos I will take you through all of those cool guitar parts throughout 4 video lessons.
Take your time with some of the solo sections. For any fast guitar line you can usually isolate it and create a little repetitive exercise out of it that will help your hands get it down faster. In fact, that is pretty much what you should do with any technical hurdle that you may come across on the guitar.
Fade To Black is an absolute classic by Metallica off of their incredible Ride The Lightning album. I listened to this album almost constantly when I was a teen and this track always held a special place with me. I hope you enjoy it as well.
Good Luck! Carl..

one of the greatest solos of all time imo
I agree. Definitely Kirk’s best
It just sounds nice
Nah, therr are far better solos. This is good but not so melodic. Pentatonic runs
This solo... just has sooooo much emotion in it.
@@thejoker-go3fh ah yes the uncultured hater
It's easy until 0:00
you mean 0:05 when it starts haha
hahahha life is to short to learn this solo...
daniel you sure?
That's true buddy ;)
Lol, this solo is amazing but so easy if you’re playing leads for a while.
"alright im just making stuff up now". lol
PaLo Gaming lmao
That gave me a boner
because the original song "fades to black" at the end, there's no ending
That was legit pretty badass hahaha.
I love two things about this solo. How it sounds and feels (emotionally) but also how it looks when playing it.
I don’t know how to sweep pick 😢
The blues kick at 5:10 is killin me
1 year later you probably learnt it
It's the only hard part of the solo imo, I can't figure out how the hell to do it
@@Taxable_Trophy Nope lol. I’m gonna try learn it again soon
@@4seiken-594 start at a tempo where you can do it perfectly then increase speed the more comfortable you get. you got dis
Do it really really slow untill it becomes muscle memory i got it in like a couple hours
I've been learning the rest of the song, I have to learn it in a day. I'm comfortable with it..... And then I see the first minute of this video
This is easier than it looks. I came here thinking "wtf am I trying to do this for, it's such a long ass solo and it looks so freaking frustrating!" But it's pretty fucking easy! :D
I don't know if you can tell that I tried to keep my self from saying that the solo is "long and hard." I'll shut up...
easy is relative, what is easy for you might be near impossible for beginners/intermediates. But I think I understand what you are trying to say, and it gives us hope :)
psteeg Yeah and if you are a beginner then some good solos are Enter Sandman, Unforgiven, Nothing Else Matters, Wherever I May Roam, Hardwired or anything from the Load and Reload album. I started out with Unforgiven and Enter Sandman when I was in a year in playing guitar and they're pretty good for beginners. :D
The Real Eric Mitchell alright thanks, I've started learning fade2b and will use it as a learning exercise until I can play it fully ;)
Not if you play guitar upside down
Kirk Hammett should have won a Nobel Prize for this solo… that’s a masterpiece of guitar.
This, the solo from One, and every solo off of Master Of Puppets should have easily put him down as one of the greatest metal guitarists of all time. Yet not even when this came out were people talking about him very often.
@@smarkmalark even in the 2000s the solo off the unforgiven 3 is insane I'd put it in his top 5 career solos
@@smarkmalark Basically every solo from Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets and …And Justice For All are musical perfection. Even the one for Escape.
Friggin snapped the 3rd string with all those bends :P
.
.
.
Guess I'll try it on the electric guitar now.
Hahahaha
EssCee96 lmao 😂😂
Bruh, you switch guitars in the song.
@@kennethnavalotajr3113 Well duh the beginning of the song is an acoustic guitar. If you can you can use a foot pedal to make your electric sound like an acoustic
Yeah, or you could use a nice clean chorus like the old school Metallica.
If only Kirk could still write like this! Yes his solos are easy to play, but I dare you to try and write one that could match anything close to this. His solos used to be like an extra verse of the song, you can sing to all of them.
yeah people think it needs to be technical hard.. they forget what music is about
BucsFan1976 well Kirk gave us enough in those early days , way more than a human should be able to , so I’m grateful for that but I know what your saying with compassions with recent shite . There’s ride and master to give us a huge wealth of genius solos to be content with you agree ?
Lovely melodies and arpeggiated fast licks. Great combo
Hold the fuck up people think his solos are easy?!?!?!
@@owenalmoney9808 hahahahahahaha when u play guitar for a while solos become alot easier to play because your technique develops . but yea in the beginning solos r hard as shit
How many guitarists does it take to change a light bulb?
One. But about a 100 others who say they can do it better.
Aviral Sawani how many guitarist does it take to change a light bulb?
None. the bassist does it.
Salil K HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I never understood the dick measuring contest these guitarists always put up. Nobody popped out the pussy shredding guitar even the best guitarists in the world were fucking horrible when they first started off.
@@salilk648 True, bassists are our B1tch. lol
Richard Kain Goddamnit im not a bassist but you just made Cliff mad
"Im just making stuff up now" made me laugh so much
4:20 is the hardest part for me
yeah I came here trying to find an easy way to play this after looking at the tab. Turns out my pinky is just too slow to do this.
@@AlexMullerSA there’s no need for pinky. It’s personal preference.
You can do it with ring aswell like I do. Actually most the people do it with the ring finger. But only teachers use pinky and not many normal people 😂
@@Taxable_Trophy so since commenting I have been doing various exercises to improve pinky speed and strength, and I can now say that I can play this part in time using my pinky!
@@AlexMullerSA nice 😂. What about the picking hand ?
@@Taxable_Trophy seems OK, you kind of just have to get into the pattern and not think about it. Similar to something like button combo mashing
Thank you. This is the first song I can play all the way through and know 100% of the notes. If you weren’t on UA-cam, I wouldn’t know half the songs I know today.
I thought it was too tough to play.....but I've done this...thanks Carl...awesome
This song is mad underrated it should be known as one of the best Metallica songs ever
its not underrated at all, dumbass
It very very very much already is....
7:00 And my high E is gone XD
*Edit, Hahah thank you for all the likes and answers!
i just snapped it too
Now i'm scared to learn it
just slides
Lmao same
Change your strings more often lol , every couple of weeks if you play regularly
Carl, you are a fantastic guitar player. I have definitely learned more from your video's than any other youtube instructor. Video's are well done. THANK YOU!!! Do you have any video's of you playing in a band?
I dead ass agree this man is such a great teacher
he's good .. but too fast though while instructing
Majdi Habash at least he doesn't start off his videos telling you the damn string names like some other teachers do. Carl is geared more for intermediate/advanced players go to Marty Schwartz if you want someone who goes a little slower
Kyle Wass ya ikr... "1st you play 7 on the G string, which is the 3rd string up from the bottom *starts counting* one, two, three" like Christ if you don't know what the G string is by now you shouldn't be learning solos just yet
Naw he is the perfect speed. There is a way to slow the speed down on youtube video's. And there is a pause button and rewind. I guess everybody is at a different level. To me Carl teaching speed is perfect. To the beginner, not so much On the other hand Chris Zoupa'a is a little fast for my skill level. But I still learn a lot from him too. I just have to use that pause button a lot. Jamming with jam tracks is essential too.
Dude what are you doing teaching us you are honestly so good and very modest. Go make your dreams happen dude you could be playing for thousands of people on stage
Been playing guitar for about a year and a half now and everything I've learned since I moved on from one string one finger riffs I've learned from you thank you Carl you are a genuine hero to me
When i first picked up the guitar 6 months ago i only wanted to play fade to black but thought it was impossible. At the time i only knew how to play easy tabs like 0-3-5 0-3-6-5 but after watching your intro solo lesson, riff lesson, and outro solo lesson and constantly practicing each part bit by bit and re watching the video practicing it all over and over again. I can now play the entire fade to black song from start to end. Just gotta work on switching from chord to chord so i can do the acoustic part and the part in the outro solo where you play the little blues lick real fast and i will be able to make a cover of it thanks carl for the motivation to keep on practicing and anytime i wanna learn a song i always look to see if you have done a lesson for it first . Rock on and keep doing what you're doing
You taught me how to play this song since 5 years ago and now I finally nailed it, thank you so much!
Thank you! Your lesson inspired me so much, i started to realise that i can play such solo, all because of you! You're great man, wish you continue your perfect guitar lessons!
You’re awesome bro I always look for songs and you have them all
Awesome sola, and your teaching even better. Thanks Carl.
when I saw the tricky part I was like :O..but few seconds after I was like :D !! i like it...a challenge
This is Great! i thought i would never learn this song but watching this video and trying it myself i found out that i kinda got the hang of if all i need now is practice . Definitely Subscribed
I really love to watch you play, you are amazing ! I learned the first part of the song.. wish I'll can play all the song one day . Thanks for the lessons :)
this is my favorite solo of all
GuitarLesson THANK YOU FOR ALL OF YOUR UPLOADS! I SUBSCRIBED IMMEDIATELY.
Your awesome:D I learned so many more songs now that I've subbed to you, thanks man a ton!!!
After about a week straight of practicing, I'll finally be able to play the entire song beginning to end after I learn this!! Cheers 🍷🍷
Carl, thank you so much for this video. Ever since i first heard Fade to Black I always wanted to learn the outro solo, and im happy to say, within 8 months of starting guitar, i have now fulfilled my wish thanks to your video
This was the first song/solo i ever learned. Just picked up a guitar for this solo. I have now mastered the shit out of this solo. Even better than this dude
bro, I can't imagine the hard work! well done and thanks!
Still working on this one! Thanks for the video Carl!
Wow..everything...just everything..hats off brother and thank you!!!
Thanks for this lesson carl :D Learnt this solo in a day.
You killed it with the solo in the beginning!
I love this solo. Sounds harder than it actually is if you been playing for a while and know the scale patterns well.
I just covered the outro solo in my channel. Thank you very much this pt 4 video helped me alot.
I learned this in two weeks thanks to you - ofcourse I crack some place - it's been 11 months since I bought my first electric guitar and I never thought to play this one before
Love this solo, well played :D
Damn it! My guitar only has 21 frets..
Lol same problem
+Mr Wuffles you can play other string but ı dont know will be same tone
bend 21 half step and u get tone of 22
me too it's a struggle
It's really hard to bend the 22nd fret on a Les paul as you have the fat guitar body restricting your hand movement on the lower frets
As someone who prefers rhythm and melodic based sections in metal I usually never bother with solos especially with Metallica because usually James has some sick lines to accompany solos, but this solo is special, aside from the fact that it's not just your run of the mill kirk guitar noodling, the whole solo is inter-connected with these amazing hints of blues that give it such an "umfph" factor, the solo perfectly hits where it needs to and Kirk really outdid himself here, I've learned 30% and loving every minute.
Carl, thanks for bringing me to where I am today on guitar, it’s a fun journey and I plan to learn more, but without your way of teaching guitar I’d probably not be where I am, so I thank you for that!
Great tutorial!! Didn't thought i was this easy...
Thanks a ton!!!!!:D
Great video, I love the way you explain, you make a complicated solo feel easy to follow along, thanks a lot I love the feel of this solo! my fingers are sore from playing along 😅
Subscribed! Will check out your other videos for sure
Thank you brother, I got everything but the final solo so it's time to put in the work
thanks carl youre awesome i can finally play this solo :)
Wonderful job Carl.
Thank you soo much for making me a better guitar player man !!
So much emotion in this.. not super hard.. but beautiful. Amd thanks for the lesson
wow i always thought this solo would be too hard for me but you broke it down to the point where i can play it pretty well
Best guitar lesson on UA-cam!!! 🤘🤘
this is awesome thanks
I’ve been coming back to this video over years and keep making small steps.
Thank you Carl! I appreciate everything you do! Helping me learn Glasgow Kiss as well! Maybe do some Tremonti stuff? Thanks again! \M/
Ok this man is amazing.
I love you Carl because now I can do triplets down a scale.
Dude, you have the best picking explanation for the crazy fast blues lick part at 5:20 !
if you think thats crazy fast you suck ass
Gotta sweep pick it 🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️
but kirk is picking all of that, he never sweep on that part
@@PinoyGuitarTutorials lmao, kirk picks 2 notes, 1 of them is a pull of from 10 to 7 b
@@Taxable_Trophy i mean kirk does not use sweep picking on that part
Bro you rock!
carls videos have saved me from dying of boredom during quarantine thank god
glad to see we're all hitting a wall at the 4:20 part LOL gonna have to metronome that part
El Mejor Carl, sos el mejor!!
Gonna take me weeks to learn this! Carl is just badass! Thanks Carl I bow to your shredding!!
this is easy you're just shit
Better than me I've been trying this solo for a damn year and still can't get it down but I've also never had anyone to actually teach me so I'm almost completely self taught
Awesome!
You should do disposable heroes next!
You're AWESOME
I knew at the end that wasn’t part of the solo haha sweet playing bro absolutely sweet!
shit i'll stick to the first solo for now !!
lol i cant even remember the interlude!
hahaha
nah mate, did not think I'd be able to play it yet I can, fairly well to. Give it a go, you will surprise yourself!
Ok, let me write this in my list of things I didn't ask
Still hard af so much to remember
Holy shit bro, I skipped ahead from part 2. Overwhelming what I have ahead of me but great videos!!! Thanks
Great job, dude! You ROCK... literally!! lol
Carl brown, you're the best of the best of the best
Ok this (together with the end solo from orion) is probably one of the hardest
VERY GOOD !
HI Carl! Thank you for your awesome vids. What effects are you using?
Thank you!
man u r awesome!!!!! how long did it take u to play that way totally frickin awesome!!!! make's me wanna give up! but I won't I know it takes time and effort it's hard when u drive over the road but I love guitar I just purchased guitar master a little helpful but I seem to learn more off professionals like yourself!!!!!
Love you Carl
Who can nail this solo is a legend(same for one)
Holy sht man awesome
thank you
I just watched the intro matched with the actual song, that's insane.
Could you do a tutorial of "The Day the Never Comes" by Metallica?
hell ya
HELL YEAH
Hell fucking yeah
FUcking fuck hell yeah
Hah
you are sick I got the notes down the lick parts are the hard ones thanks for the lesson
Breath of fresh air after psycho holiday solo
Have you done James' outro part as well? I've figured it out myself, but it sounds kinda off depending on what headphones I use when I listen to the song.
yes its a long 1 reminds me of beyond the realms of death two great guitar players
vry nice as expected u should do a taken dream solo cover
Thanks
1:25 i like how he just says screw it, and starts winging it 😂👌
u r awesom
I've watched all the videos and searched wondering how to do kirks harmonics over the clean part, did you make a lesson on that part?
Damn WoW
that sounds badasssssary
God bless u man:/ to give away \m/a good artist solo;/ from the best band in the whole glove earth\m/ y que viva el rockandroll...\m/...
wow!
I know know the entire fade to black song thanks to carl!!!
It almost made me cry when he said he was just making stuff up at the end of his playthrough because there's no way I could make stuff up and have the sound that good
A lot of the extra stuff you heard is on the record when the volume is fading out on the song. He only threw in a couple parts at the end
