Hi Nate! 😊
When you cut the fuller on the mill, is there any reason you didn't just mill out the lanyard slot and the rest of the holes for the scales on the handle? No shade just curious..
Try a higher grit stone as a finishing stone. I typically do 400/1000 on a diamond stone and then end with a shapton 2000 grit for carbon steels on my knives. If you watch outdoors55 you have the basic tips and tricks, pretty sure he did a video on the shapton splash stones as well. Nice work and I love your setup. I need to get me an end mill for my knife shop.
you do know a week is monday to sunday yeah...
Dang got my hopes up I could learn for free one month free dose not help those of us who are disabled and three times below poverty who can afford this definitely not us
This is what I miss about KOR. Nate having fun, inspiring and educating his viewers while doing something most of us would never try. Thanks Nate !
Thier new host does a good job of this. He usually is just playing around making stuff and is clearly having fun doing so. Too bad they didn't figure this out before Nate left.
TKOR*
TKOR had this beautiful vibe for so long, but they started losing it a year or two before Callie and Nate left. They both seemed to be doing their best, but whoever was calling the shots didn’t really seem to have a consistent vision, and they definitely made a mistake in not letting Nate and Callie lead the way.
@@lunabelletheinsanedo not support them. How disgusting .
As a Forged In Fire Champion; this gave me anxiety when you had only 8 minutes left on the first one 🤣 I love your videos so much and I aspire to make similar quality! God bless Nate! 🙏
Was gonna say it would be cool to see him on it after watching the one hour session, but after still only cutting in the other two sessions I realised he would have been out day one for not actually forging the blade
just hire an editor that does flashy edits, people these days need lots of flashes, movements(zoom ins, outs), jokes, twists and ... to keep them attentive.
Ian! Hi, you and Nate should do a collaboration, where you teach him to forge a knife
@JIJforgeNfishing Dude that would be epic! Nate if you see this, I’m down! We could make a pretty sweet Damascus pattern and knife! Or heck even a sword! 🤙 @NFTI
As part of the Leather work side of UA-cam I like to think we are are an accepting bunch. Overall good job. That sheath is better than the leather that comes with most manufactured knives and a lot of knife makers if they even include a sheath at all. A couple of things that might help. A crease line around edges cay class up a plain sheath, belt or strap. Quick and easy you might even have a creaser bit for the stitching groover you used. Another suggestion is get a big needle for a leather sewing machine and use that instead of a drill bit for the stitching holes. Just push it through with the press not running. It will make tighter holes that close up around the thread. Also doesn't like to wander around as much as a small drill.
Timestamp 5:00, please always use a vise or clamp to hold the blade down. At the very least put a bar clamp on the table upside down the the bar sticking up so that if the knife gets stuck on the drill bit and starts to spin around it will get stopped by the clamp. About a decade ago I was drilling into a knife for the handle pins. Holding it by hand, it got caught on the drill bit and spun around and sliced my stomach open and my hand. Was rushed to the ER where they said I almost disembowled myself and I was lucky to have been fat because if I wasn't I would've bled out and died. Please always use a vise or clamp. I know we do things sometimes that we say "I've done it like this a million times" but it only takes one accident one time to never make a mistake again.
In today's video, Nate prepares for his appearance on Forged in Fire.
hah
In one episode the judges pointed out that it's called 'Forged in Fire' not 'Ground in Fire'. It's a competition for blacksmiths, not knifemakers.
Hi Nate! I love your videos and I’ve been following you since you started appearing in TKOR. I just wanted to find a video and comment early so you might actually read it. I love your videos and your personality and thank you for never giving up on being creative fun and teaching while we watch. I’m sure many other feel the same and pretty much just keep going I love your work and appreciate it very much. ❤😊
W comment ❤🎉
@ Right?! 😂 Seriously tho hopefully he reads it so he knows that some of us have been there since day one. 🙏
Yeah same tkor was tragic bit so much fun to watch. Will forever be thankful for the videos you guys made
You should go to a location where you can forge and make one from forged steel. I love that process and would love to see you take it on and learn those techniques and explain them like you do with everything. Even if it’s super basic.
Murray Carter was probably the first knife smith I came across years ago. He’s got some great content forging laminated Japanese blades. ua-cam.com/video/B7Izy9a9m8k/v-deo.html
I bet Alec Steele would be happy to collab ;)
I would love to see you try and tackle something like "Mokume-gane." Think of Damascus steel, but instead of steel, you use copper and nickel. It doesn't make for a high strength piece, nor does it hold an edge all too well, but the end result is absolutely beautiful!
Alec Steele did that…. Dudes workin with titanium pattern metal right now pretty cool actually …
OMG I just went to an event where they talked about Mokume-gane. It's a gorgeous art form.
That's not exactly practical without a power hammer so you will probably be waiting a while to see Nate attempt it
Maybe in the furure he might try, but he is not a blacksmith.....
Sounds like a good material for handle accents, or scales in folder knife
At about 5:00 with a drill that small in size, use higher speeds. Smaller tools need higher speeds, larger tools need slower speeds.
Source: I'm an educated Machinist out of Denmark. Love your content, Nate!
Edit: This became especially apparent around the 8:30 mark, highest speeds and a bit of lubricant with the tiniest of tools.
Yes that’s correct💪💪💪😊
@@haywardstrydom1468 Great assessment, thank you! 💪💪💪😊

Lolll 😂😂
I love that your 1 day and 1 week, are work day and work week. As it takes out some of the potential errors from being too tired from not sleeping and trying to eek out that little bit extra.
It also makes it much more useful for comparison as it's a standard amount of time that can be compared across disciplines, skill sets etc. And while it allows for eating sleep, etc. all the more.
i love the second blade with the almost bronze blade. love the scales from the 3rd knife. would love to see those two features combined.
As a NEW bladesmith, I forged all but a couple of my knives so far, I like this video. The forging part, while very intense on the physical work portion, it is NOT the most time consuming part. The details are the difference between a cheap 1hr knife and an expensive MULTIPLE day to weeks knife.
That 1 week knife turned out sooooo good, I wish I had the skills and equipment to pull something out like that. I still wouldn't use copper though. But it's still 10/10
Nate who made the lego gummies on the TKOR channel
bro making his own forged in fire episode
As a leather worker, my advice is invest in stitching clamp it will make stitching a lot easier
I work as an engine machinist and we use those scotchbrite belts to polish journals on crankshaftscamshaftshafts. Takes rusty or scratches metal and makes it look brand new
Great video. Thanks. I enjoyed your technique for hand sanding your bevels. You make the work look easy. I have been making knives for about 6 years, and I find parts of the process agonizingly difficult.
I've found that on harder steel, when drill bits won't cut, use masonry bits. It takes awhile, but it'll make a hole for handle pins
Are you serious?
You can't be serious. 😂
I want to see you take the same concept but make swords. Maybe 3 hours, 3 days and 3 weeks for that one.
I think three hours would actually be impossible, 3 days seems like a rush
@ThomasSohn agreed. Would love to see him build a sword though, even if it takes longer
@ThomasSohn well he doesn't have to make a proper sword, just attempt. After all this is only comparison of how far/well he can go given amount of time
I like how Nate became the knife man of the internet lol
39:35 as a leather worker, watching the drill bit go through the leather hurt me
100% earned yourself a new sub, first video I've seen by you and I looked at the views and I was blown away too see only 64k, this is too notch content, very entertaining, very well etided, very educational. I can already tell I will be back for more and more, I was not expecting too watch a whole 42 minute video right now but it was so worth it and I'm kind of sad it ended.
Nice video Nate. This is the first one of your vids I've watched in a while. Mainly because its a joy to watch someone do what they truly love. The other content wasn't for me. But I know you are a knife guy and seeing someone do something they are passionate about is always a pleasure.
Edit: I have seen alot of knife making and I have to say that you are really talented at it. I would like to see more content like this.
🤘🤘nice
That one-week knife is *_gorgeous!_* I was a little concerned that with the copper bolsters, the emerald-dyed wood making up the rest of the handle might just look like corroded copper, but with the gloss and the contrast in the grain, it's beautiful!
I love your videos Nate! I have been watching your videos ever since you first started at TKOR and I think you are really fun, smart, and entertaining!
Thank you for your work!
Nate, as a long time TKOR random viewer, please please keep doing what YOU enjoy. Your happiness is contagious for us 😂
i love such videos not gonna lie! i really hope we get more 1hour,day,week videos of you creating things :) its really interesting seeing all the details and stuff that go missing when having less time
1:45 I know the knives are dipped in water while grinding to both cool them off so you can hold them, and to keep from changing the properties of the steel from getting too hot in parts
But, it always freaks me out when I watch a blacksmith holding a piece of steel with water dripping of their hands, using a grinder...
😬
You managed to do more in an hour than i could do in 1 week... the knife turned out AMAZING
Wonder what the difference would be if the same challenge was done in reverse. The momentum from having done the first two would surely affect how the 1-hour build would be executed.
It would have also prevented him from running around wasting part of his one hour looking for different tools because he would have found them all during the 1 week build.
As someone who has worked with leather since I was 9 I will say, I will always forgive such a hard worker like yourself
Nate, you should keep making knives and sell them on your store. Personally , I would LOVE a purple knife, as in the metal is purple, though I don't know if that is even possible. but id settle for one with purple heartwood for the handle with matching sheath in purple leather. I love your videos, you are one of my favorite youtubers. been a fan since TKOR.
Somehow, the 1 hour blade will outlive its brothers by many years.
Tkor was foolish to get rid of nate, he was the channel. Congrats on almost 800k subs. 1 mil is sure to come.
Me over here knowing I will never make a knife in my life, watching this as if I plan to make one day. I'm impressed when I see people doing things like this, because I could never (because I have no interest in doing so, it's just not my wheelhouse), but I am really enjoying watching Nate make three knives here.
That 3rd knife was so beautiful. Keep up the good work and thanks for the amazing video.
i love the knife content. i mean i love all the content its always some of my favorite to watch. but i would love to see more knife stuff. ive always wanted to get into knife making. the bronzing on that bevel looked so incredible and i loved the scales. nut, my god that 1 week knife i think made me drool a little lol. amazing work man!
Nate, you really are so smart & talented! All of the knives are great! I love the copper of the 2nd knife. You outdid yourself on the 3rd!
Awesome vid and knives.
I like the copper effect of one days blade and the patterning of one weeks blade. Be great if the both could be combined.
This was a pretty cool video. Had me zoned out lost track of time watching it lol. Sweet video man!
I loved this video! More of this please!! Excellent craftsmanship and beautiful final knife!
Your close to 1 million subs dude!!!!
Nate we love these videos keep them coming i would also like to watch you build a small shed or something of the sorts would be flvwry interesting
That hamon came out so great! Fun video! Thanks!
I liked this video. You may not be a pro at some things but you do a great job of explaining what you are doing and why. I enjoyed this and may do one of my own. Your explanations are awesome.
So I'm not usually a fan of this kind of knife making (no forging), but I gotta admit, that 3rd knife is gorgeous. Great work!
This was such an awesome video! Makes me wanna pick up some 01 steel and try my own 1-day knife build!
I really want to see you take your time making a knife with that brass coloration on the 1 day knife, because it looks so cool
I’m just shocked how well that hamon came out, perfect placing And incredible contrast! Almost look like san mai.
Do you have any always on forced air exhaust for that space? That would make a huge long term health difference if you’re not rocking powered respirator at every tool.
First time here. I thought I was going to skip around a bit, but I watched the whole thing. Great content!
I've only ever made 1 knife. It was made from scroap steel, and the method was basic, traditional blacksmithing. So i spent the better part of a day - heating the metal until it reached a certain orange colour glow, hammering on an anvil, and repeating. The blade was then sharpened od whet stones. The whole thing was then given a black coating. If you look at examples of early medieval eating knives -that's basically what it looked like. A bit roughly made, but then - it was my first attempt.
Love the work! I'm surprised with all your kit you don't have a SWAG off-road table + portaband for cutting out the profiles. It's much less "exciting" than an angle grinder but also way faster! :)
31:23 Sounded like shaggy from scooby doo xD
I like this format. Reminds me of mumbo jumbo minecraft redstone videos, except with knives. XD
This was a super cool video! I'd love to see a video where you try making a knife with super basic tools, maybe intermediate level tools, and all the advanced tools that you have.
It's simple. I see Nate uploaded, I immediately watch.
Golf balls make excellent file handles, just looking at your notching file here.
Aside from that, from the thumbnail the 'one week' knife looked a bit too 'extra' and over the top, but turned out really nicely in the video. Cheers on actually heat treating it the right way and not just sandblasting the pattern into it!
We need more knife content. I love it!
Lmao, I just like how you're using the drill press on the leather instead of a leather punch.
As someone who's punched out thousands of holes by hand, I'm jelly.
You have got a really nice setup there for knife making. Well some on the knives and the video.
I was so worried that you were going to hurt yourself, making that one hour knife. I'm so thankful that you didn't! ❤️
When I drill steel at work I rarely bother using cutting oil (depending on how much I'm drilling and other factors) and I don't have any problems. I just have it on a slower setting
The green scales with the bronze bits is really nice! Though I do wish that the 1 week one could have been a hand forged damascus type knife instead of using ready made stock material.
Wow. This was a great video. I never knew how long it took to make knives.
❤ Love your longer videos. Excellent infotainment.
God Bless this man, shows us that youtube is forever!
Awesome! favorite color scheme is the 1 day knife though.👍
Learned a lot from this video and the comments 🙂 Thanks 🙂
You absolutely can quench your steel during the temper. In fact if its starting to overheat quenching it will arrest it from progress further. Most people do 2 two hour cycles and in between the blade needs to get back to room temp and the quickest way to do that is to run it under some water.
Great video! Love it! I'm more like a restoration guy, but this is inspiring!
18:04 That is an awesome look!
Aesthetically, the bronze look of the 2nd blade has the best look, but the 3rd blade is overall the most gorgeous.
I love the design of the 3rd knife but that accidental bronze on the 2nd blade is gorgeous.
One minute knife: _starts knapping rocks_
love your knife making videos!
That bronze knife blade is honestly one of the coolest things I've ever seen
What a great video! 😍Thumbs up for video, audio and editing! Thank you! 👍👍👍
I would be interested in more information about the belt sander. Are you happy with it?
Nate you should probably use some Walnut handles cuz I'm going to be honest green wood doesn't look very good use the normal color of the wood Blackwood looks really nice also purple heart is very pretty purple there's so many different colors of natural wood that you could use
Great pacing. Did I just sit back and watch the whole thing? Yes.
what a tremendous amount of time put into this video. thanks.
Cutting a knife to shape you can definitely do a functional knife in an hour
The third knife would make a beautiful Skean Dhu🏴
I love the chaos of the first knife!!
Great video Nate. So far my favorite
Super interesting that the 1 hour one looks like a desperate, need a knife right NOW kind of knife. Knife two looks like a personal use knife-- like the kind you'd use all the time around the house, and knife three looks like something you can sell or gift.
Your blade skills are awesome I think you should try to be a contestant on forged in fire. 👍
Would love to see this style video with other topics. I'd even watch you redo a big project with just the 1 hour and 1 day to compare to however long it took you to complete the original project. I'm thinking a one hour and 1 day giant nerf gun build.
You should go see Alec Steele or Will Stelter. Would be a cool opportunity to forge a knife, maybe even give Damascus a go!!
It's funny, but your one week build looks better than my one year build. 😂🤣😂
Great video! I'd love to see more like it :)
This was such a fun video! Learned a lot.
Love this, I need to get back in my shop
Great video, 1 hour is not much time for making a knife, I might have to give that a go. :D
I don’t know if its viable but i’d like to see you try a cheap vs expensive food video, except you give the expensive less time than the cheap to make. Example if you make a meat dish, you have an extra day to marinate the meat for the cheap dish. Or make additional sides assuming no new ingredients are added
How to make a time trial video:
Trial 1: Rush a bad but understandable result
Trial 2: Do the regular process with a good but expected result
Trial 3: Overdo the regular process and add unnecessary steps with a good but underwhelming result in relation to time spent.
Nate somehow took the "48h chocolate chip cookie" video concept and somehow translated it into knife making lol.
Gotta be honest though, I would be all for seeing Nate give the 48h cookie thing a go as well!
