Thank you Claire. I have a quesrion. Alphabetic index directs the coders to J44.9 when we go by disease...lunh ..obstrictive with asthma. Should we code J44.9 or J44.89

Subcategory J44.8 was newly created FY 2024, so this looks like an indexing issue that needs to be fixed. When this happens, go with the more specific code, which is J44.89, as direct by the indexing for asthma>with>chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Hi Claire, Can you suggest which ICD code would be appropriate for Asthma-COPD Overlap Syndrome??? Either J44.9 or J44.89.

Yes, it is J44.89. New Coding Clinic 2nd Quarter 2024 confirms asthma with COPD is assigned to J44.89. Additional code assigned for asthma only if it adds further specificity such as type or exacerbation.

Hi! No, you should not. Emphysema is a specific type of COPD, and according to the guidelines, we should always code to the highest level of specificity. Coding both the emphysema and the unspecified COPD doesn't add any more information since the Emphysema code already conveys that the patient has COPD.
