Woodturning - Scraps vs Seconds

  • Using Vitex, a decking timber off cut, as the wood and combined it with Perspex seconds. The good thing about the scratches in the Perspex is that it helps with the adhesion.
I used an epoxy to glue them together however I was nervous at the thought of it flying apart when going at full noise on the lathe. The reason was that back in Jan this year (it’s now April) when I cut it to shape, I tested the offcuts. The off cut failed, it split nicely between the Perspex and Vitex layer.
The end product looks great on the top side but there are still a small chips on the bottom, I clearly didn’t take small enough cuts on the base.

You're a braver man than I for turning such a large piece. Well done, and beautiful outcome!

    Hi Brett
Wow that’s some project, you had me “glued” to my seat expecting to see it fly off the lathe!
Well done, great imagination to come up with these out of the box projects. Seeing you swivel the headstock,I bought my Nova lathe in the late seventies and have never used that feature,I turn in reverse when doing an undercut rim ,much easier to see what’s happening.
Thanks for sharing,PVA SHARES HAVE SLUMPED!
    regards

Thanks Mal, If I go backwards I will need to remember to put in all the grub screws. The blank was a tad to big to start with hence the need to spin it up off center. I am sure there will be the smell of glue in the not to distant future. 🙂

Another great piece. A 12 minute video doesn't do it justice. There is a lot of time involved doing something like this.

There certainly is Geoff. Most of it was me working up the Nero to spin it up. Or was that to allow the epoxy time to cure. Thanks

That's nice, I wondered about the glue on Perspex.

It was definitely epoxy John. Possibly a better epoxy is out there than the one I used but it did work
      Cheers Brett

You always come up with some cool looking stuff Brett! Looks like your fears about it exploding were unfounded although legitimate. Cheers! 😁

Thanks Stuart for the continued support. I created the blank in Jan and taken this long to work up my nerve to spin it up.
      Thanks heaps

Really nice piece Brett, well done. Couldn’t help wondering what speed you need to turn it to make it look like it was stopped.

Thanks Ian and I wonder 500 rpm on the lathe and 50 Hz for the electric lights helps with the stopped illusion? Maybe I need to turn at 617.3 rpm to stop that 😀
