MXR Timmy Overdrive
I've been very excited to try out the new MXR Timmy Overdrive pedal since they announced it. I don't own one of the original Paul Cochrane Timmy Overdrive pedals, but I know a few people who do and I've loved the sound of them. However, they're quite hard to find and can be quite expensive.
The MXR Timme certainly wet my appetite. A good friend of mine who runs a local music store brought one around for me to get my teeth into!
If you're ever in the South Wales area, please visit a town called Neath and go along to a store called The Music Shop. They're a fantastic local business!

Great overdrive pedal! The clipping switch from left to right is... low compression, wide open, and stronger compression. Hope that helps. Cheers!
Fab tones, and great sentiment about supporting local music shops
I don't think so, I didn't try it, but I'm pretty sure the iRig will only run audio from the program that is currently open on the screen. I may be wrong though... it might reference it on their website somewhere.
Great job! Definitely one of the best demos of this pedal I’ve seen on UA-cam, that includes most of the “big” channels
Hey Doug,
Sorry I've taken a few weeks to get back to you - my UA-cam didn't actually show me your comment! Thank you so much man, I really, really appreciate that. I'm really glad you think so, that means a lot.
The Timmy is a really fun pedal. I actually love it. I haven't switched it off since I got it. It's a really inspiring pedal I think. I'm finding things in it that bring out the best of all sorts of guitars. It works fantastic with any single coil guitars because it's got a real warm low end. Sounds good with a Strat too. I tested it with Humbuckers as well, which sounds killer. I do prefer it with singles personally, but honestly, you can do anything with it!
Have you tried one?
Thanks for the reply! I haven’t tried one yet due to the pandemic, I like to play through something if possible before I buy it. Definitely will try it when I can finally get to a shop and play it. Take care
@@pecosdmc8752 Ahh that's cool, hopefully some of the shops will get to re-open soon. When you check it out let me know what you think! Be great to hear how you get on with it!
Leigh Fuge Will do! I’m also very interested in the Source Audio LA Lady Overdrive, has some good demos on UA-cam, of course I’d like to hear that in person before plunking down the cash
One of the best demos I've seen on the Timmy. Nice job!
Hey Mark,
Thank you so much for the comment, really glad you enjoyed the demo. It's a really great pedal. MXR did a really good job on this circuit. It sounds a lot like the real deal.
Thank you for checking it out! I really apprecaite the kind words.
@@LeighFugeGuitar Thanks for the recommendation. I am looking at stacking some overdrives on my board, but I want minis to save space. I am checking out three MXRs - the Timmy, Sugar Drive and mini-108 fuzz. I may just have to get all three - they all sound so good on demos. Already have a Keeley Super Phat mod, which is definitely staying on. But I removing a Voodoo Labs Sparkle Mod. My main rig for overdrive - Reverend Buckshot into a Roland Blues Cube Hot - has plenty of midrange the 808 circuit in the VL Sparkle is just too much midrange. The Timmy seems great for controlling frequency with the bass and treble cuts.
@@markdeutschlander697 I'm a big fan of gain stacking too. I love running multiple overdrives together.
The Sugar Drive is meant to be amazing, I haven't had chance to test one myself but I've heard great things. Same with the mini 108 Fuzz. MXR drives are always good.
The Timmy is really versatile, it's the sort of pedal that sounds awesome on its own right away. When using it with other drives it takes a little while to dial in, because it has a very specific sound. But once you do dial it into your rig, it sounds amazing!
@@LeighFugeGuitar So when are you planning a Sugar Drive review?
Another cracking review ! 👌the differences in settings on the Timmy clear. Liking it! Wanting it!
Thank you man! Thanks for watching. It’s a really great sounding pedal. I wish I had one of the originals to compare it to.
Leigh Fuge - lots of reviews on pedals, but too much showboating, and not enough details about the settings. Imo. 👍
Great video thank you
Thank you for checking out the video! Glad you enjoyed it!
Great demo man. Sounds like this pedal let's some of the clean signal though which can be useful. You think this pedal would stack well before a distortion pedal to cust some lows and enhance the presence and gain
Hey Graham, thanks for checking out the video and commenting. Yeah the pedal stacks well with others. It's been on a lot of my pedalboards over the last 2 years and has been used as everything from a low gain push at the front end to a solo boost at the back. It's very versatile and it pairs well with most other drives that I've tried it with.
Thanks an great demo from Argentina. I have mxr sugar drive. Suits me buy a Timmy for stack them? Or Will be stupid got this two pedals? I like mateus asato tone and supose jan ray is similar Timmy and bonito sick as is ver similar to klon (sugar drive)
Hey thanks so much for checking the video out! They stack great together, the Sugar Drive is a Klon style circuit and I often use both the Timmy and a Klon for gigs. You can stack them in either order, it works great both ways!
@@LeighFugeGuitar thanks bro!!! Thank you very much!!
Great demo of the Timmy! Definitely the best I’ve come across on UA-cam. I am unfamiliar with how the Kool amps are voiced - are they mid scooped like a Fender by any chance?
Thank you man! I really appreciate that. Thanks for watching. The one in the video that I am using is called the Kool Amplification Blue Sky. It's a single channel, totally clean amp. It's similar to a Bassman style, but it's not strictly mid scooped. I tend to run it with the bass and treble on 6/7 and the mid on 4/5 so it serves its purpose as a Fender style amp. When I gig with it I use it for that John Mayer-ish clean tone and then I stack drives on top of it.

I put a dislike for the haircut
Thanks! Glad you disliked it enough to give it a dislike. I’m glad my lockdown hair affected your day that much. It’s a well known fact that hair also affects your tone.
