DEMOS IN THE DARK: PAUL C TIMMY V3 VS. MXR TIMMY // SHOOTOUT

- I just had to try these two together. Timmy Overdrive by Paul Cochrane is one of the most loved overdrive pedals on the effects pedal market. Recently, we saw the release of the Paul Cochrane Timmy V3 15th Anniversary and, shortly after, MXR announced the CSP027 Timmy from the MXR Custom Shop at NAMM 2020.
The MXR is based off of the Timmy V2 and is a faithful recreation in a compact enclosure. If you love the V2, you'll love the MXR. The Timmy V3 has some pretty noticeable changes. The switch on the face is now a high gain/low gain switch while the clipping selector is now on an interior dispswitch. Paul also returned to the 1458 Opamp instead of the 4559 used in the other models.
Both pedals have non-reversed Bass & Treble pots. That's gonna be a tough habit to break.
Other Tools Used:
Nash T-63
Nash S-63
Gibson Les Paul Standard 1999
Gibson Custom Shop ES-339
Fender Princeton Reverb 1967
Sinasoid Cable

What a well done video. Also, smart to post as this is probably the only one that compares the new Timmys. Great job.
i just wanted to know! haha
Great demo! Super helpful hearing the tones.
awesome! glad i could help! thanks for the kind words!
I come here for the jams. The excellent demos are just the added bonus. Righteous!
oh dude, thanks so much! i'm tryin!! 😀
It's dangerous to demo a MXR pedal in the dark. Those blue LEDs are as bright as the sun.
hahaha. yeah, funny how something that was never an issue for me before is now a very real consideration. 😂😭
@@DemosInTheDark Retina burn !
🫣
maybe mxr has stock in the white-out company; buying one leads to the other
Thanks for doing this, I've been debating getting the mini for some time.
absolutely!
Love the harmonized leads... and that break beat tho!!!
yeah boi! thanks, man.
What an amazing intro jam!!
thanks pedro!
Thanks. Great video.
1:35 what riff was that? Cool little run.reminds me of some zztop just a little cleaner
... thanks for the specification of the bypass in the do spedales.
Having that detail (I understand that the V3 is bypass - true buffer) and the other characteristics of both pedals ... which one would you choose for quality-sound, the current MXR or would you acquire a Timmy in "second hand".
It is worth paying a "higher" cost than going for the MXR. There is noticeable difference between the Timmy 15th anniversary and the MXR speaking of sound.
I have no option to try both and the feedback from people who have tried both pedals will help me.
Thank you.
between the two i kept the timmy v3 for myself. 👍
I haven't heard any version of a "Timmy" I haven't liked.. I love all of mine.
ARGH! this puts the punk rock, practical, DIY, make the most of what you have side of my brain at odds with the gear snob, its worth it for that last 10%, law of diminishing returns be damned side of my brain! Great video thatks!
i'm just here to give you reasons to spend money. hahaha!
Muscle shoals post rock... that tune slayed!
i love both those things! 🙏
Man, this is just adding more options to my list.
I mean the comparison serves to show the modifications Paul made to the V3. Definitely smoother mids, but that's not to say the older versions aren't solid circuits.
the older circuits are absolutely great too!
Great comparison, lots of help. One question I’ve had after watching a few of these is that the MXR’s volume is always turned (visibly) higher than the Cochrane Timmys. Is the MXR’s overall output lower?
i don’t think it’s significant. the difference could be pot taper or even knob size, but 10 is still 10. i’d have to dig the mxr out again to confirm, but i do think if it was a major thing, i hope i would’ve noted it.
Demos In The Dark Awesome, thanks. I was hoping that was the case since nobody was saying anything about it, but then I found myself up night after night without sleeping, obsessing over this one minute detail having to do with two things I don’t own. You know, the usual.
yep! beeeeeen there! hahaha
@@DemosInTheDark For anybody with the same question I had (and who happened to read this far into the comments), Demos in the Dark was right on the money; I came across a comment from PaulC (on The Gear Page forums, maybe?) confirming that it just had to do with pot taper. He said the volume felt rather jumpy around the 2 o'clock position when using mini pots with (supposedly) the same taper as he was using on the full-size Timmy, so he/MXR opted to go with a different taper. Super important mystery solved!
@@DemosInTheDark I have to disagree. I have both (Paul C. V2), and unity volume on the MXR is around 2 o’clock whereas on the Paul C. It’s around 10 or 11 o’clock. I think the Paul C. Has more output, and sounds significantly better in general.
I know you did this video a while ago but I’m new to the Timmy world! I hate making the wrong decision lol. It looking at the MXR, between the V2 and V3 which do you prefer and why? And on reverb how can we tell if it’s a legit Timmy? I’m new to reverb and I’m trying to get my hands on a Timmy because it’s exactly what I want. Can you direct me to the best place to get a Timmy?! Also you said there was video on the comparison of the V2 to the MXR timmy? I apologize for me not know who you were talking about but can you direct me to that video as well?
hey jacob! good news is that there is no bad decision! the differences between the V2 and V3 are pretty slight. personally, out of the whole lot, i have a V3 on my board and it's not leaving. but the V3 replaced a V2 which i used for YEARS. they are both really incredible and you can't go wrong with either. if you end up not liking one, it simply means that the timmy circuit isn't for you. with that, grab a MXR and test it out. it's almost identical to the V2. if you like it and you wanna see what the V3 is all about, sell it and buy a V3. but if you dig it, you'll probably just end up sticking with the MXR. the comparison video i was talking about was andy martin and i believe that video was done for reverb.com. should be easy to find on youtube!
also, clones will be labeled as such. there aren't really counterfeit timmy's out there. cheers!
@@DemosInTheDark Thank you so much for all this! Makes a lot of sense. What do you think is a price that is too expensive for the V3 to pay on reverb?
paul himself will go on and sell blems, so that's cool. usually minor finish imperfections. and really, that's what a lot of people are selling for $250+. they're selling blems they bought from paul for $140. i'd set a notification and see if you can grab one for under $200. and even then, i'd try to get somewhere close to the $150-160 range. that's just my two cents on the subject.
I wanted to ask if the Timmy 15th anniversary pedal is true bypass? Would they know this information?
i believe v3 is buffered bypass. mxr is “true hardware bypass”, which to my understanding, is not true bypass.
Love the jam man is it original from u?
thanks! indeed it is!
Both sound great!
The V3 is the best overdrive ever imho.
I’d loved the intro track. 🤘
hey thanks!
these are crazy close. to my ear the MXR maybe had slightly more fidelity....did you feel that in the room? am i crazy?
also, Lightspeed or Timmy? i'm in the market for one of those vaunted "transparent" drives and now i'll confused.
funny you should ask! i did a transparent overdrive shootout last week!
@@DemosInTheDark wait, is it up?
@@jasonkerepesi haha yeah dude
Don't fall for the b.s. A "transparent OD" must be linear and is called a boost, and always has been.
The term "transparent OD" has no reason d'etre except as deceptive marketing, because _anything that internally clips the signal adds harmonics and compression which colors the sound,_ and is therefore not "transparent" by definition.
Linearity in the circuit is crucial.
@shaft9000 you made my day
I like the blue one
Pretty sure I hav a version 2 , the switch for different clipping is on top wth vol n tone . No hi gain low gain switch . If it's real similar to the mxr I'm gd . Dont know how I didnt see this all this time . Ill Sub and tht crap wont be anymore .
Honestly, the differences are very minor when one compares a specific OD style pedals. Timmies mostly sound the same, Klons mostly sound the same etc. Form factor, price and availability is what matters the most for me. For example, the Ceriatone Centura is the best Klon for me but it's huge and I would never buy it. Similarly paul Cochrane's pedals are too unavailable and I would probably go for the MXR, but in this case I went for the Lyla Drive by MusicBoxPedals, since it happened to be available
Okay
Nice! I’d love to hear a comparison of the v1 Tim and the new v3.
well according to paulc the mxr is most similar to the v1/early v2!
The V3 is the best one it has more gain and everyone left the clip toggle in the center anyway.
Awesome video, made me think that it could finally replace my octafuzz. I did'nt think that it can be pushed this much!
replacing an octave fuzz with a drive pedal? tell me more!
By replacing I meant that this pedal could be enough for what I need, I wouldn't dare telling that it can replace it in facts O:) I've got an Octavix from EHX which is sooo dirty, it lacks some clarity. I'm not able to find anything I like with it.
Definitely slight differences, but very minimal.
Is there a button for the clipping inside the dark blue timmy?
nope. it’s on the outside now!
Demos In The Dark what’s asymmetrical and symmetrical clipping?
oh wait, i’m sorry. i responded too quickly. yes, there is a clipping selector on the inside, but it only has symmetrical and asymmetrical, where precious versions have 3 options on the outside toggle.
Demos In The Dark Okay! Thank you! & I have one more questions 😂 on bass and treble, if you turn the knob all the way to the right will it give you the bass you have set on your amp? Like it wouldn’t cut any bass off of what the amps bass is set?
right. exactly!
To be honest, the intro reminds me of something The Sheepdogs would write. Haha if you haven’t heard of ‘em, go check them out, they’re amazing!
that's a new one for me! i'll have to check it out!
@@DemosInTheDark start with changing Colours! 🙌🏻
I know this is an old video which do you prefer please
i’m still using the paul c. gave the mxr to a friend.
Thanks Ryan!
hey, i was curious too!
Two pedals I don't have and will get, the Timmy and a Greer Lightspeed.
the V3 has a richer/warmer tone - IMO
definitely warmer!
Timmy V3 is Warmer, just a bit more open and even a smidge more transparent…
7:11 7:15
C3 definitely is better, but can you get your hands on one? Probably not.
V3 even 😄
i might know a guy who has two... 😀
I love my v2. I’m on the list at Humbucker for the next round of v3. I cannot wait! This isn’t helping. 🤪
despite the smallness in change on the sound, that is the direction i'm leaning too!
There is some b-stock V3's on Reverb just listed by PaulC today
huh. there was! 😭
Yep just checked, listing already sold out. And they only lasted about less than 10 minutes
Great demo & great playing, very much enjoyed it
V3 seems to almost have a reverby sustaining kind of quality to it. The MXR seems to be a bit heavy on the lower mids (at least on UA-cam) They sound different that's for sure. I prefer the V3.
i didn't want to inject my opinion into the video, but lets just say, i have 3x of the V3, one for every board. 😎
@@DemosInTheDark hahaha NICE! I think everyone hears the same difference as soon as you play them next to eachother - even on non studio speakers. The V3 seems more unique in it's voice though, and I definitely prefer the V3 too.
@@DemosInTheDark I have re-arranged my main pedal board and now have an opening for a mini. After doing a lot of listening and researching, I have purchased a new MXR Timmy to place between my Keeley Katana Clean Boost and my Mad Professor Sweet Honey Overdrive, because of the low-to-mid drive, the clarity and the response to pick dynamics. I will use the Timmy as the middle of a drive stack, my favorite sound for overdrives. I anticipate this pedal will turn out to be perfect for that.
for sure! it’ll be perfect!
V3 all the way! I have no luck with mini’s of any pedal Ive owned; always something missing.
I tried the mxr and it just needed more headroom, sounds compressed when stacked with other pedals.
I agree that it sounds more compressed when stacked, however I like that effect personally. You could also run the pedal in 18v to get more headroom
Looooaads of Channels wants to make demo of Timmy and how good it sounds and ends up with harsh, unpleasant sound. This is one of few, where Timmy sounds like pedal, the I might GAS for.
oh thanks, man! i have a long history with that circuit and i'm really comfortable with it. i think, after some time, you learn to play to the pedal's strengths and can get rid of some of that harshness. i appreciate the kind words!
Part of that is the amp too. 6v6s just sound great with pedals, almost regardless of amp.
MXR all day
One of my personal favorite features of the V3 is the finish... ua-cam.com/video/yTKdHbiLim0/v-deo.html
yes, enchanting graphics indeed. 😂
Thanks for the comparison! ( The Timmy V3 sounds is more open and has more gain than V1 and V2. Paul Cochrane doesn't do things by halves, V3 is a clear improvement from V1 and V2. )
*Version 2 in this video, the sound is darker than the newest V3 and the MXR Timmy sound is like the V2 Timmy.* See this video too: ua-cam.com/video/UnO72NQ9r7A/v-deo.html
And by the way: The Pure Sky = China Clone is clearer than the China Timmy!
OMG! Really?
Original sounds better
Hate the mxr and hate it's stupid blinding lcd - unless you want to light your room like an anime obsessed, pi$$ jug hording, basement dweller.
