According to the iTV Channel documentary, Dan Scott and Cully Barnaby were a couple, canonically and secretly (for some reason). I don't understand why they'd never shown their relationship.
Long time Midsomer fan who was thrilled to find two seasons with D S Scott that I’d never seen. I very much enjoyed his character particularly so because he was written with a bit of an edge portrayed so very well by John Hopkins. As the episodes went on, it seemed to me, Scott became much more of a proactive and important partner to Barnaby. So often the DSs are presented as rather simple to the point one questions how they were promoted to the position. In reading the comments I see the writers did not explain Mr Hopkins exit! That’s an unfortunate move on the program’s part; Scott, Hopkins and the fans deserved better. I wish Mr. Hopkins good luck. I enjoyed his time on MSM.

@123haninhk I found the scenes where Scott and Tom Barnaby interrogated suspects very good. Scott had almost the same interrogating style Barnaby did and it was exciting to watch.
Nice to hear it from the source as to why he left so abruptly. He was practically begging to be let go if he asked for a huge raise, and thought he might get enough to make staying worth his while. Seriously? I thought his character started with an unpleasant edge, with some nice qualities thrown in - but that is on the writers, not the actor - and I assume his character may have evolved with time, like the others (Troy and Jones both changed for the better). He was my least fave...lol Maybe it was how they wrote his part !! I loved John Nettles and Daniel Casey (Troy) together... I think there was genuine affection there.
@@linrob1312 Yes Tom Barnaby had all the patience in the world for homophobic, bumbling Troy but I think he was threatened by DS Scott who could actually figure out clues by himself.
DS Scott seemed to settle well into his position, after a bumpy start (Scott, the character, not Hopkins, the actor who seemed in top form from the beginning). Given the send-off they gave Troy (promoted, then mentioned in two episodes following, and then showing up at Cully's wedding), you'd think they could have tried a little harder to give him a proper exit. But it's not unusual for actor's characters to be abruptly dispatched, if the producers feel they have been "wronged" in any way (whether they actually were or not). In the US, the actor who played the beloved NCIS agent named Kate wanted to leave so she could go raise her children, and the producers wrote her out by killing her character on screen! That was certainly jarring for the viewers, and a pretty strong statement about how the show runners felt about her leaving. At least Dan Scott wasn't killed off. BTW, I think it's amusing that John Hopkins could barely drive when he first came to the show, considering the running gag they employed with DS Troy's terrible driving.
DS Dan Scott, John Hopkins, was wonderful. Where did you go?? You have a wonderful voice, and very handsome, and totally believeable. Very good luck to you.
He was good in the role. He clearly underestimates himself. It ain't Shakespeare, after all, but it WAS a particular kind of character needed and he played it well. Kudos to him.
US -Kentucky Love midsomer ,Unfortunately they dont pay or take care of any of their actors who play sargeants. I dont expect them to get stupid like we are in the US with Actors because US goes overboard making them think they are gods. but UK does not pay them enough. thats why Ben Jones had to leave as well. He wasnt even making enough to get a hotel room and had to travel back and forth a long distance at his exspence. Then they put out the lie that the young actors like to pursue other options. I would say they like to pursue paying their bills and eating on a regular basis.
That's terrible! I mean 5:30 am to 9 pm to be focused on work and not being paid enough, or even able to sleep enough really- that's not good. Actors aren't robots... and generally have more emotions than the average person- they can probably feel when something isn't right even more...
Listening to him explain what was going on makes me like the actor more. I'm not a big fan of DS Scott the character, but I did notice that John Hopkins was in a documentary about Richard Nixon. It drove me nuts until I realized it was "the guy from Midsomer." It impressed my mom too. It gave him a new dimension that I never imagined.
I miss Midsomer Murders! Unfortunately, the episodes we saw in Canada were very outdated; however, that did not matter as long we got to see them. Please send us newer episodes soon. This was a great show and the actors are great.
I don't think Midsomer Murders has the worse cops. 😅. However, living in the colonies, we did have examples of more modern crime solving techniques at the same time as this show. What I like about Midsomer Murders is the more elegant manners in most cases, than in North America, as well as the lovely old buildings and estates. I don't think the DCI Scott, played by John Hopkins, was destined to stay in the show long but his departure was very abrupt. Thanks for giving some context.
@@123haninhk He's also done lots of work in the videogame world. He plays one of the main characters, the Shadow Client (Lucas Grey), in all the games of the pretty successful and highly acclaimed Hitman trilogy. The england mission in the the third game was even a murder mystery akin to Midsomer Murders as well
I am fortunate that my memory is not as good as it used to be, when I watch re-runs, which I continually do, I cannot recall who the murderer is, love it!
So funny, because I am exactly the same. It is a rare thing for me to remember 'whodunnit' which makes watching this show, over and over again, a real pleasure.
@@ronschlorff7089 I loved Inspector Morse with John Thaw, Inspector Wexford, Vera, etc. I have read some Colin Dexter and Ruth Rendell books. Try Maigret it is also good. British mysteries/detective shows are the best!

I was a bit confused when he said he was Really young wasn’t he 28 or 29yrs old when he starred in it, Daniel Casey was 25 when he played Troy. My favourite side-kick character was Ben Jones.
I really hope to see more of his work because he is a good actor. I would like to see him come back again as a DS or something. If they brought back murder investigation squad he would be good on that too. It only lasted two seasons and there should’ve been more.
I just rewatched S9 e1 (a day after my first watch) as I couldn’t for the life of me figure out what happened to Scott! This clip has saved my sanity! 😅
I have received a barrage of racist comments all of a sudden for the past few days (thanks algorithm!) for this video regarding the new series (saying things like how much they hate the nonwhite actors in the show) plus the nasty comments against the actor, I have to remove all of them. I won't have them here.
O that is really so sad, it is terrible that in a world with so many troubles, people cannot recognise and care for each other. Colour should not cause hate, ever. take care.
I love this show from season1 episode 1 to presently waiting for more...I love BBC shows (death in paradise, mrs.marple, poirot, ect) and I rarely see representation of my race in early episodes of any show but lately I see it more. Shame it's a problem for people. I still enjoy them all the same, just nice to see the inclusion of not just mine but more races
Honestly, 99% of the time anyone using woke as a negative is a bigot. End of story. Whenever anyone uses woke as derogatory just replace it with what they're actually saying. “This is too black, this is too gay, this show is no longer an English story, etc.”
I read your comment about racist comments, for this reason I have subscribed to your channel. We as a nation (British) are allowed to have films with even tartan people if we want, and even if we employed someone from outer space if their available. It's the choice of the film maker. When you look at who wrote those commentaries then you understand why they themselves are racist. There are criminal films which have many beautiful black actors to which I enjoy to watch. There are always going to be these kind of people, we have to learn to live with this unfortunately. The British government can't deal with themselves let alone govern a country. 💞
Hopkins played the city-cop-in-the-country role perfectly, with edge and yet good-natured humor. He's also a well-respected Shakespearean actor. I could have done without Claire Cavanagh (the interviewer), however, as she doesn't realize that interviewers need to keep a low profile to elicit what the interviewee is all about. She was obnoxious and intrusive.
John Hopkins was my favorite Barnaby sidekick! I don't understand why he says he wasn't good in the part! I liked that he was reluctantly subservient to Barnaby!
I was thinking about leaving a comment how all the Sergeants were great in their right with Nettles, including John Hopkins on a Midsomer link... of course one might miss one actor, but I really thought they all added their own uniqueness to the show. It's interesting to hear he did a lot of theater as he does come across as very well spoken with a lot of strong acting skills...also it seems like in real life he's a very nice person so that was good too... and who can blame someone for having trouble with such a demanding schedule... I never even made it to go into acting professionally as I realized I'd rather live a more holistic lifestyle one night in rehearsal once I'd found yoga in school... also all three were too good of actors to be underpaid if that was an issue that seems to come up! They were practically giving their whole lives to a very popular show...their own lives matter too! There are reruns...
Interestingly- not to sound too out there, but just for fun I looked up the three DS's birthdays and John Nettles... I actually don't see a day listen for John Hopkins, but I almost want to guess a Taurus as he seems pretty grounded, or possibly a Libra, Virgo or Pisces as well as they are often balanced and well spoken too- I won't speculate to much ... and Daniel Casey is a Gemini so that makes sense he'd be more softer spoken in general, Jason Hughes is a Sagittarius which makes sense as well being a little more fiery but they are often softer spoken too, and John Nettles is a Libra which makes a lot of sense as he's very polite and balanced seeming ( maybe all these signs make good detectives- they tend to be intellectually oriented often times so far as I've seen) so anyway, everyone is unique and has their own personality, sometimes from genetics...who knows about astrology- or even how they read their character to be like and directed to act like.. I think it only makes sense they'd not find carbon copies of a parting actor too... also, I think it seems it's difficult for England to produce any bad actors- so to speak- it just seems like any English actor I've seen in anything are so good!- maybe it's the Shakespeare training often times- but also the comedies are so funny too ..- anyway, I do appreciate John Hopkins well spoken voice and resonance for one !
Rewatching the series on Tubi. It's awesome he's so humble in this interview but he was by far the best sidekick to the awesome John Nettles. Had far more depth as a character than the rest of the sidekicks in the entire series. Great loss to the series.
I guess we just have to imagine the 'sickness' Scott had that Tom Barnaby mentioned ended up being terminal and very sudden, and heard off camera. He doesn't mention it again because it's hard to deal with, either with family or colleagues. It's a pity they didn't just add a minute of dialogue time in the office getting the bad news via a phone call, with him then telling 'temporary' Jones who's also there that he's now to be filling dead mans shoes. Oh well...
John Hopkins did a wonderful job as DS Dan. The DS were all lovely young actors, and I wonder sometimes if they were written out when their fan mail outnumbered that of Nettles!!! Actors!
Nettles would never allow that to happen. He is a well respected actor in his own right and doesn't need to behave that way. Look up some of his other shows and you'll see what I mean.
I liked him, he is self-depreacting saying he was terrible. As an actor, myself I can pin a good actor. I think he was happier doing stage work than film.
I had assumed that his character left after watching his love interest die/murdered before his eyes and unable to save her. Remember, she was a young school teacher being accused of witchcraft and was cracked on the head and set alight in a church. Well i couldn't blame a real policeman quitting under the same circumstances.
My mum and sister have a running joke, when one is watching the other inevitably asks what the body count is. We cannot fathom how they get new people to move in to the area, being murder capital of the world. Lol
Loved his charecter. Miss the vibe the older seasons with Nettles. The New seasons fells more like a soap opera with bland comedy and more and more ridiculous kills lol
I wrote a short fanfic that gave DS Dan Scott a proper sendoff. Mr. Hopkins, I'm sorry that you weren't valued enough to have gotten what you deserved, both in contract and in sendoff. Here's my version of why Scott had to leave. P.S. - You're my fave of the sergeants. "School of hard locks" is still the best single line in all of Midsomer Murders! (These events take place in "Midsomer Rhapsody" and "The House in the Woods." DCI Tom Barnaby walked briskly into the Causton station. Two people had been found dead near a dilapidated house in the country that morning, and his temporary partner, Detective Constable Jones, was canvassing the area. His normal partner, Detective Sergeant Dan Scott, had called in sick and left him alone on the case. He was, then, quite surprised to see DS Scott standing by his desk. "Scott, what are you doing here? Aren’t you off sick?" DS Scott looked at the floor, and Barnaby noticed that his right shoulder and arm were in a sling. "I was, sir" said Scott, " and I’ve even been to see the doctor." His voice was very soft. Barnaby saw instantly that something was wrong. He stepped forward to his partner’s side. "Is everything all right, Scott?" he asked. A single tear formed in Scott’s left eye, and he said, "No, sir. It’s not. That bloody wire that killed Crane cocked me up right proper, sir." Barnaby’s stern countenance softened. "What is it?" he asked. "It’s a complete rotator cuff tear, sir," said Scott. "And, two torn ligaments. The doctor said that the damage is severe enough that even surgery won’t guarantee I’ll ever regain …" here his voice trailed off, and he choked back what must have been utter frustration. Barnaby knew what was coming next, but he just stood quietly and let Scott tell it. "Sir, the doctor won’t … won’t clear me for duty in the field. He says it’s time to man a desk. Can you believe that? My bloody arm is falling off, and I can’t even bloody write, and he’s telling me that all I’m good for now is writing? He’ll have a laugh, won’t he? You know what is funny, sir? I like it here in Midsomer now. Yeah, I thought it was the back of beyond when I got out of the cab that first day. Thought it was a punishment." Here, Scott looked wistfully out the window and shifted his shoulder painfully in the sling. "But …" here he chuckled. Barnaby raised an eyebrow. "Call me ‘Enry ‘Iggins, sir, but I’ve grown accustomed to Midsomer’s face," and Scott offered one of his rakish, charming half smiles. Barnaby chuckled in spite of himself. Scott chuckled right along with him, but then he reached into his suit jacket pocket with his left hand and drew out an envelope. He handed it to Barnaby, who knew what it was. "You don’t fancy a desk, do you, Sergeant?" he said. Scott took a deep breath and said, "Hell no, sir." Barnaby looked him straight in the eye and said, "I don’t blame you. I would go stark, raving mad if I were in your position." As Barnaby took the envelope, Scott straightened up to as much of a position of attention as his ravaged shoulder would allow and said, "Sir, it’s been an honor." Barnaby looked at him, smiled his own rakish smile and shook his finger at him, and said, "Pfah, you couldn’t stand me at first, Scott." He reached out his left hand and shook Scott’s firmly and warmly. Scott locked eyes with his boss and said, "You’re right, sir. But, you grew on me. I will …" and Scott choked up. "So will I, Scott," said Barnaby, "so will I." Former DS Scott said, "Sir," and took his leave, grabbing the small shopping bag that contained the few personal items from his desk. "Good-bye, Dan," thought Barnaby to himself, and then he got back to the business of the two dead house hunters in the woods by the old house.
I'm rewatching old Midsomer episodes, and I always liked Scott, I mean actually all of Barnaby's sidekicks. maybe because I'm weak for characters that have a bit of an edge to them but deep down they are good people. I thought he was a breath of fresh air after Troy left because they were somewhat the polar opposites.
The producers really showed no care about the fans who liked the character when they gave John Nettles character such a bad reason to state why Scott was not in the episode and especially giving a reason that implied he would be back in the next episode if some fans did not see him missing in the beginning credits. John did an excellent job in the show and deserved a better exit story. I know producers can delete or add scenes in episodes so the producers of Midsomer Murders should delete the dumb reason for Scott's departure and put in a better reason.
I thought he was great in MM, I loved the bit where Barnaby was interviewing someone in a log cabin or caravan in the woods and Scott was off camera , and then you heard this noise of the flushing of a toilet. Barnaby goes out to see Scott with a large branch giving the viewers to believe he was trying to help flush a erm turd down the toilet. That did make me laugh.
I though John was great in it I liked his episodes. the actor who played Troy and John were my two favourite side kicks on the show. I think its best days are behind it now though. John and John Nettles were in Poldark but I cant recall whether they shared a scene though.
I really loved John Hopkins as Sgt Scott. Of course, it's disappointing he left the show but that was his choice. What I don't accept is that left at the last minute, without making that last movie, showing a clear reason for his exit, giving a resolution for his fans, regardless of how much he was or wasn't paid.
I thought you were really good and bearing in mind you came from the Met you wouldn't sweet talk people the way Barnaby did. Don't sell yourself short John and I bet you were, and probably still are the women's favourite out of all the DS's!

Now we will watch the old episodes of you in it & see the stress 🥰x I really thought you were great x GOD bless your future plans
Scott had great confidence. His face wasn't always screwed up in confusion and or embarrassment like the other two regulars.
Yes, he seemed the most believable in his role as a tough cop!
Believeability is not a quality the Midsommer Murders producers looked for.
He was my favourite sidekick.
He was delightful! I was sad when he left
John Hopkins was my favorite DS!
98% of all Midsomer scripts can be summed up as "three murders and a rescue."
So true!
Haha 💯
I liked Scott a lot. Shame John didn't do more at the time.
He turned to theater and very successful as a theater actor and even won so many awards. He only takes TV jobs sporadically.
@@123haninhk He's also done lots of work in the videogame world. He plays one of the main characters, the Shadow Client (Lucas Grey), in all the games of the pretty successful and highly acclaimed Hitman trilogy. The england mission in the the third game was even a murder mystery akin to Midsomer Murders as well
@@MrTobiasRieper didn't know that ! thanks
Loved John Hopkins !!!💖
😿 he was my favorite sidekick for midsomer ….
I miss you John Hopkins I think you were great.
Too bad he didn’t remain. I liked his brash character.
Honestly, he needs to get back to MSM to play an investigator brought in to help the police out again!!
I think that all of Barnabys sidekicks have been great. I liked them all!
Yes. they were all as good as Morse's Sgt Lewis, and that's a very high compliment from me!
@@ronschlorff7089 I loved Inspector Morse with John Thaw, Inspector Wexford, Vera, etc. I have read some Colin Dexter and Ruth Rendell books. Try Maigret it is also good. British mysteries/detective shows are the best!
@@daphnekivinen9482Yes, I'm looking on Britbox for Good ones. New one "Murder in Provence" is good too, but only 3 episodes so far. And just loved "Endevour" with Morse as a young detective, in 1960's, and the rest of the cast is great too, especially det. Thursday, his supervisor.
I was a bit confused when he said he was
Really young wasn’t he 28 or 29yrs old
when he starred in it, Daniel Casey was
25 when he played Troy. My favourite
side-kick character was Ben Jones.
Since the actor is almost 50 now, he called his 28-year-old self "really young".
Why Ben Jones ? I miss Casey and Hopkins .....
Scott
I really hope to see more of his work because he is a good actor. I would like to see him come back again as a DS or something. If they brought back murder investigation squad he would be good on that too. It only lasted two seasons and there should’ve been more.
Yes, in the tradition of the Morse series of cops.
Yes, Jones came back but I think he was a sentimental favorite.
I just rewatched S9 e1 (a day after my first watch) as I couldn’t for the life of me figure out what happened to Scott! This clip has saved my sanity! 😅
never call in sick if you work for a Barnaby. you just are gone.
@@jana8599 hahhahhaha
We loved him. He could come back.
Good for you!!!
I love the show..wish they would put out more episodes ❤
John Hopkins was my favorite Barnaby sidekick! I don't understand why he says he wasn't good in the part! I liked that he was reluctantly subservient to Barnaby!
These two were my favorites too. Love the show
This guy was my favorite assistant. He added a much-needed touch of toughness.
I like John Hopkins character on the series and John Nettles and his family, too. Very entertaining back then.
Rewatching the series on Tubi. It's awesome he's so humble in this interview but he was by far the best sidekick to the awesome John Nettles. Had far more depth as a character than the rest of the sidekicks in the entire series. Great loss to the series.
I agree!
yes, the "awesome John Nettles", this new Gedeon guy, or whatever the fuck his name is, is really God awful!!
Many are on You Tube and Acorn has more

Ta. Will check it out❣️
He was my favourite🥰
I guess we just have to imagine the 'sickness' Scott had that Tom Barnaby mentioned ended up being terminal and very sudden, and heard off camera. He doesn't mention it again because it's hard to deal with, either with family or colleagues. It's a pity they didn't just add a minute of dialogue time in the office getting the bad news via a phone call, with him then telling 'temporary' Jones who's also there that he's now to be filling dead mans shoes. Oh well...
He was great on the show. I hope I get to see him soon.
A likeable character and actor. The most handsome of the sidekicks.
Very handsome! I liked him a lot in that role. I was sad he was no longer in the series.
And then he saw a man get decapitated right in front of him and almost ran into the same wire that did the job himself in his last episode.
Enjoyed the way he portrayed his role. It was interesting
This is hilarious! He's such a great guy. Jason Hughes ended up going because of the work schedule etc. too.
(These events take place in "Midsomer Rhapsody" and "The House in the Woods."
DCI Tom Barnaby walked briskly into the Causton station.
Scott took a deep breath and said, "Hell no, sir."
Barnaby looked him straight in the eye and said, "I don’t blame you. I would go stark, raving mad if I were in your position." As Barnaby took the envelope, Scott straightened up to as much of a position of attention as his ravaged shoulder would allow and said, "Sir, it’s been an honor."
Barnaby looked at him, smiled his own rakish smile and shook his finger at him, and said, "Pfah, you couldn’t stand me at first, Scott." He reached out his left hand and shook Scott’s firmly and warmly.
Yes this should have been the ending.
I like detective Scott. I wish he had a better run on Midsomer murders. Blessings to you John Hopkins
I loved Scott.
I really liked Scott 👍
The producers really showed no care about the fans who liked the character when they gave John Nettles character such a bad reason to state why Scott was not in the episode and especially giving a reason that implied he would be back in the next episode if some fans did not see him missing in the beginning credits. John did an excellent job in the show and deserved a better exit story. I know producers can delete or add scenes in episodes so the producers of Midsomer Murders should delete the dumb reason for Scott's departure and put in a better reason.
Literally me googling it because the reason was so open ended that I thought he would return
In the German version they say sth about a honeymoon 🤷♀️. No idea why they invented a different reason - not much of an improvement though...
Love him, he forgot Cully to run after the lady...
He was great in the role 👍
I thought he was great in MM, I loved the bit where Barnaby was interviewing someone in a log cabin or caravan in the woods and Scott was off camera , and then you heard this noise of the flushing of a toilet. Barnaby goes out to see Scott with a large branch giving the viewers to believe he was trying to help flush a erm turd down the toilet. That did make me laugh.
One of the few actors on the show who appeared shirtless. Be still my heart!
He was so good. I loved th fist on e.I was sorry that he left but this guy was amazing. And he and His super were good together.
Love him on Midsomer. I thought he was wonderful in the role!
I really liked Dan Scott and Ben Jones. Both were really good characters.
I though John was great in it I liked his episodes. the actor who played Troy and John were my two favourite side kicks on the show.
I think its best days are behind it now though.
John and John Nettles were in Poldark but I cant recall whether they shared a scene though.
They didn’t, unfortunately.
Dan was my favourite.
That's terrible, that they wouldn't even kill DS Scott off! 🤨
Love the show, he was my favorite sidekick.
I worked with John at RST , nice guy ...i also had a secret crush on him 😆
I just discovered this show and love it ❤
Love him!!! He did great!!! ❤️
Thought you were great and the character grew over the 2 years making it more realistic.
Side note, I've always wanted to walk the Appalachian Trail 👣
John Hopkins was brilliant
Very good actor, appreciated his character and his work on Midsomer Murders.
I miss John Hopkins....
He's so gorgeous.
Good luck with your show ❤️ℹ️💖💗💗💖
I thought you were really good and bearing in mind you came from the Met you wouldn't sweet talk people the way Barnaby did. Don't sell yourself short John and I bet you were, and probably still are the women's favourite out of all the DS's!
