The umpire had an absolute shocker in the second clip haha. Feel bad for Lawson and Helivaara as their shot looked in. The umpire comes across like he just wanted to leave as fast as he could.
Yes, they look at a mark that has nothing to do with that shot and is far deeper than the original. You can even see a mark that looks like it is caused by the lob on the baseline. I can understand the frustration and frankly because I also doubt that his opponents sincerely believed the ball was out. They just figured they could get away with being dishonest and they did.
Challenge systems for clay are extremely expensive because the uneven terrain means you need dozens of laser calibrated cameras to provide an accurate 3d rendition of the court. For hardcourt, since the surface is 100% flat you only need a handful of cameras. But for clay you need a lot more. The Estoril Open in Portugal will have one of such systems this year, called Foxxten, and the tournament director said to portuguese media that this system, while nearly 100% accurate, will end up costing a small fortune because it needs 40 cameras synchronized by 10 lasers to work properly.

in the second clip, the ball was clearly in. this is why Hawkeye should be in clay events too. benchetrit violation is incredibly harsh considering he's serving to stay in the match. Rocca Batalla should have been disqualified after throwing that racket. it could have hit anyone. Same with Gautier with his racket throw.

For me it's the waste, because not only do you have the environmental cost but the financial as well, and while it might not hurt their hip pocket, someone spent money etc to make that racket

The ITF/ATP/WTA really should allow challenges on clay. The calls shouldn't be subjected to the objectivity of the umpire.
There were challenges this year in Charleston on clay. I think it worked well.
They tried it in Madrid and it didn't really work. A lot of times umpires had to come down to look at the mark and overrule the video.
I think calibration on clay is problem
Challenge systems for clay are extremely expensive because the uneven terrain means you need dozens of laser calibrated cameras to provide an accurate 3d rendition of the court. Either that or defer the umpires paychecks to those affected when a call that affected the outcome is proven.
