I freaking LOVE Cervul. Watching the updates on him I already expected him to be pretty good, but damn, he's totally OP. Only experienced his "good" version, now I'll go for "evil" path. Judging from your description though, it seems like I'll be disappointed a little, since Cervul's crossbow and banner are definitely the highlights. Banner especially, fully upgraded it's busted as all hell and I like it lol. Healing bandages are the reason this mode should be played on classic difficulty only imho: combined with Alcedor's healing abilities and additional save points in castles makes everything way too easy (I played on casual 'cause I've already gotten all endings on classic and am tired of insta-death pits). Pavise is pretty good too, but I think this is something that works way better when there are actually 2 players playing. Overall, the game is way more fun to play in this mode thanks to the double monster spawns. Big props to devs for allowing the players to play as "evil" versions of Alcedor and Cervul from the very beginning by entering "Swordcedor" and "Cervile" as their names. Btw, I find it pretty humorous that, if you run out of extra lives and Alcedor is deceased, trying to interact with people as Cervul will result in him saying "I better get lord for this...", like his duke totally didn't die right in front of him lmao
Evil Cervul does have some nice options for tools as his ichor potions are much better healing than bandages and the demon minion does really good passive damage and works well against most bosses provided you keep them near. The void shield is overall better than pavise since you can absorb projectiles to shoot a beam and evil Cervul lacks the reflect projectiles that he can do with pavise/banners. Poison daggers is probably more effective for bosses overall - I just like the piercing quality of the crossbow for quickly clearing minions. And thanks for mentioning the dialogue line. I'll still be compiling the cutscenes and as much dialogue as possible but I suspect I'll miss some of the more obscure dialogues.
I've actually encountered quite a few bugs going around as Cervul in couch co-op. The banner is so good that the screen can't scroll fast enough and some bosses legit just can't spawn because the screen isn't in the 'correct' position. It'd be funny if it didn't soft-lock me on the second-to-last boss on the pure good path
I would definitely recommend it even before the two player update. Not only is it a really good retro game (though Classic difficulty can be annoying at times from instant death water/lava/etc.) but there's a number of easter eggs from NES era games and the good/evil paths allow for trying different things. I would advise that whichever you choose you fully commit to in order to reach the ultimate good or evil endings.
@@CrankyTemplar Yeah I chose to slay the first guy who turned into the boss and I couldn't get Ultimate good ending from there. I only fought Belphegor then my game ended. I couldn't get enough moral to get the defeat the cultist missions :(
Glad they added a little to this game, wish they would expand on it quite a bit though. I lived in this game once i started playing and would love for more. Its OST is a regular on any playlist for sure of mine.
Well, this update just cemented my opinion that this game is to 80s gaming what Cuphead was to 30s animation. (Cervil is even dressed in blue for God's sake!)
Without you he loses a lot of men, as you can see if you get the "sins of omission" achievement. He could absolutely deal with the cult himself but it'd be a pretty pyrrhic victory.
I'd highly recommend Infernax. I generally do censor things like that to be safe, and I may not be 100% consistent, but I guess I feel the context doesn't warrant it as say the succubi in the ultimate evil ending which generally are more related to sexual content.

Wanted to write this in my first comment, but I forgot. You may have realized this already (I haven't watched the video fully due to evil path spoilers, so I can't tell if you did :D), but you can throw axes forward at an even lower angle by ducking and holding the left/right direction. Sadly, you've already done all bosses without damage, but hopefully this information can save you some headaches with aiming for future playthroughs xD Edit: you did figure it out in Baron of Decay fight! That's to be expected though, because I have no idea how you would've been dealing with those little red freaks without taking damage lmao
They use the axe throwing that makes the most arc, so the axe Hits multiple times. It's not a matter of if it hits but it is about the damage it deals.
I'm starting to play with cervul, my god he is really powerful by his own, but from what I saw in this video, the sprite from the 4th tier of Axe (I mean the holy one) is quite ugly, those sparkles that just sticks to the axe are really out of place, for me atleast. And also as other mentioned, the crossbow is extremely powerful and easy to use, you can easily kill everything without moving at all and with unlimited ammo with the base tool. It would be really neat if they rebalance the gameplay with Cervul giving him more limits as his role should be (a supportive squire) that if he wants to be the main hero he should have a real challenge as all of his tools are not eternal (atleast until he goes to a shrine)

You need to be in range of it to get the benefit. You can have Cervul holding it while playing as Alcedor to get the benefit or you can set them down for either of the two in range of it to benefit. Even maxed out the range isn't that great. With some upgrades to it Cervul can melee holding a banner (but not throw an axe while holding a banner).
Cervul is too OP. I am playing with my daughter, but she has nothing to do, as I obliterate everything on screen with my arrows. I wish they where limited, which would make it more balanced :(
Only for the Future ending which is on an ultimate good playthrough with the demonology book mostly/fully completed or if you enter the Konami code to start a run with it active.
This is only with two player mode. Alcedor uses a mace/sword and magic and renaming Alcedor to various codes lets him use a variety of other weapons. Plus the Konami lets you play in Contra mode.
@@EmiHnH There's also cheat codes that further alter gameplay. If you're a diehard fan of The Evil Dead, name yourself "stranger" and look up the chainsaw code.
Don't have to use Cervul if you don't want to. There's loads of secret characters to try. Like Ash- I mean, the stranger, who has a shotgun and can wield a chainsaw with an extra cheat.

Baphomet doesn't count, as we can see in the final scene, it's the Duke who deals the last blow, not the squire.
