      Well, it is also epic.

    oooooh I love the conversation between Fox and Olmar here, because of the direct parallel it has with Thors' "you have no enemies" talk with Thorfinn.
    Fox is describing how killing a person makes you feel more confident, because it makes you realize how fragile human bodies actually are, and you cease to be afraid. and Olmar asks "but... who?" to which Fox replies "I know the perfect target for a beginner. we've got some right here on this farm. people you're allowed to kill."
    meanwhile Thors says, "you want a sword Thorfinn? a sword is a tool for killing people. who were you planning to kill with this?" Thorfinn replies, "the enemy." Thors asks, "who is your enemy?" and Thorfinn responds, hesitantly, "Halfdan..." and that's when Thors says, "you don't have any enemies. no one has any enemies. there's no one who it is okay to hurt."
    this is what I mean when I say that Thors is a character who lives for only four episodes, but he will never stop being relevant. Thorfinn and Olmar are immature people in these scenes. they don't even know who they would raise a sword against before picking it up. what does it mean to mature? do you grow up when you choose an enemy? or do you truly mature when you come to the conclusion that the harm is never worth it.
    Thorfinn has wielded a blade long enough to know what it's done to him, to have used it. the man cutting him to ribbons is unenviable, simply for performing the act.

    and once again, Without Love connects directly to Thorfinn's experiences.
    "time and time again, my hopes are gone. it's like a never ending marathon. I hear voices every night, of the ones I left behind, that I love."
    pretty much sums it up, if Thorfinn's trajectory is in any way unclear from the show itself.

  • @kamuyking551
    @kamuyking551 4 місяці тому +20

    I think the main thing about Thorfinn in this episode, is that by this point, he's spent the majority of his life being told what to do, and failing.
    this is why I've made a point of talking about the ways that Askeladd was manipulating Thorfinn all this time... because it helps make sense of Thorfinn's character here. Thorfinn started out as a prideful kid. when Leif said that their ancestors fled and ended up in Iceland, Thorfinn thinks of that as disgraceful, even at the age of six. so when Thorfinn was captured and threatened, and that became the reason why Thors died... that took a huge toll on him. he feels helpless, and pathetic, and guilty... and half the reason why he fights so hard to try and kill Askeladd, is to rectify that.
    if Thorfinn could kill Askeladd, he could prove that he wasn't weak like that anymore. to him, erasing Askeladd puts the whole thing right again. meanwhile, Askeladd is constantly giving him tasks to prove himself. accomplish something great on the battlefield, bring me a head with a helmet, defeat Thorkell the tall... etc. and Askeladd reserves the right to decide whether Thorfinn has done well enough to earn a reward. he puts off dueling Thorfinn by implying that none of his battlefield accomplishments have been adequate yet. even when Thorfinn gets the head with the helmet, Askeladd starts to leave before Thorfinn gets back, which implies that he was comfortable assuming that Thorfinn couldn't hack it, and possibly died already. when Thorfinn drags his battered body back after fighting Thorkell that first time, Askeladd just says "it was a bad matchup," practically admitting that he knew this from the start... but Thorfinn would only take it as salt in the wound, because Askeladd has trained him to think that way by now.
    and even when Askeladd decides that Thorfinn has done enough to earn his reward... the "reward" is getting taunted, insulted, hearing his father mocked once more, and then getting the crap beaten out of him. Thorfinn has never felt like he succeeded, throughout his entire time with Askeladd. not once.
    and then Askeladd dies. Thorfinn's entire mission, for the majority of his years spent alive on earth, and it just evaporates in an instant. it's the ultimate failure. the one that renders all his other actions completely and utterly worthless. all Thorfinn can do now, is look behind him at the path he took, and suddenly see all the useless damage he's left in his wake, for nothing.
    but more than that... Thorfinn has spent his whole life being told what to do. Askeladd was constantly giving him directives. anger was the motivator that kept him from feeling his grief, and Askeladd made all the decisions, so Thorfinn never had to think about what he was doing. and think back to episode 8 in the first season. when Askeladd says of the slave girl, "it's not the slave's fault that she's useless, you're just bad at using her. you can make use of anyone with the right approach." Askeladd is referencing his relationship to Thorfinn. the dynamic was always like that, and Askeladd knew it.
    Thorfinn has been a slave all his life. this really isn't new... it's actually probably more familiar to Thorfinn than any other way of life at this point. it might even be comforting to him, to shut his brain off, and let someone else make all his decisions for him. and he's used to not minding much when he's abused. all of this is exactly in line with the way he's been this whole time... he just has a different affectation.

    😢 I feel bad for Thorfinn, the death of his father had a huge impact on his life, but it was worse when Askeladd died on his arms, by someone else hands, and he's facing issues that are way difficult to deal and understand.

    19:09 Luke, do you know anyone with depression?
    At the time these episodes were coming out, children over 20 years of age complained a lot about how torfin was acting, but... Only those who have suffered in life know what that look means. These same minded children say that depression is a cool thing, which no one had in the past...
    For me, this is where we separate Thorfin and Eren's attitudes. Obviously Eren with the memories of several people in a single brain affected his mental health, but here is the moment when the two paths separate, it is this journey that we are seeing.

    @thatxavianxfeline723 4 місяці тому +2

    A couple of things I wanted to mention: first, you were correct. That fortress is the home for all the farm's guests, and Snake is their leader.
    The second is that not as much time has passed since Askeladd's death as you might think; I would say half a year to a full year at most. His father is dead, his target for revenge was killed by someone else, and on top of that, Thorfinn isn't even free to go home anymore. Although that assumes he would even know how to get to Iceland; based on his lack of answer to Einar when asked where Iceland is, he doesn't know either. He has no reason to live right now, and instead of finding another one, he's now chosen to die for Einar. The reason? Einar has some hope left in him while Thorfinn doesn't. I'm sure our former warrior has fonder feelings too, but those aren't the reasons for his choice here.
    Give him time, though. Thorfinn will find hope again. :)
    I'm glad to see you enjoying the ride. I assure you, it only gets better from here. I'm not going to say why, but my favorite episodes this season are 9, 17 (I think; it may be 16), and 22. I hope it'll give you a little more hype for the journey forward!

    Dear Luke, don't try to draw out an epic moment out of the show this is no longer that kind of anime, this seasons lends itself to debate feelings and discuss traumas and relationships between humans! Seems like you've been wired to watching to much Shonen but believe me this is something different so approach it differently even differently than how you treated season 1 that might as well be a different show at this point, it was s a prologue to give you adetailed look at Thorfinn's life during that time so you understand the weight that came crashing down on him now that his "objective" has been taken from him and all that he's left with are his past actions
