- Dire Straits performing live during the 'Love over gold'-tour in 1983. This one is from 'Alchemy; Dire Straits Live', recorded in Hammersmith Odeon.
High quality available!
Enjoy!
Possibly the most beautiful guitar solo of all time.
Yes ! Always hearing it here
agreed
Knofflers a legend but think Dave Gilmour's got him beat - not by much tho'
Amen brother
💯
Knopfler was number 44 in Rolling Stones 100 greatest guitarists list. I think he belongs in the top 10. Watch him play, he's transported and he takes you with him.
Unfortunately alot of 'best ever' lists focus too much on technique and crazy licks, and disregard things like musical merit, emotion, melody, etc.
44, wat a f up, top 10,
So underrated:
Top 1 for me . Alchemy album is a once in a lifetime performance. Never to be repeated for pure drive and engagement. Every song was performed better than the studio version.
The changes in pace the ups the downs . Every band member has to be completely in sinc with what’s going on .
What is amazing about mark is not only his unrivalled talent on guitar but the vocal emotion he emits . Every song is a story we can all probably relate to .
The best
That's bonified BS!He's top 5 for me,side by side with Hendricks,Clapton,Slash,Sambora.Period.I don't give a flyin f,what so called renown critics and charts has to say.
The outtro solo to this song, in any form, live or album, gives me chills every time I hear it. I think it ranks as one of the greatest of all time.
Pure genius, nothing less. It's the finest use of a Stratocaster ever.
Best. Live. Album. Ever.
Agree 100%🎸🎸🎸🎶😍👌
alchemical Alchemy
I wasn’t expecting this song to affect me so much. As someone mentioned, one of the most beautiful guitar solos and cool downs I’ve ever heard. This concert keeps giving and giving unlike anything I’ve ever heard. Absolutely brilliant. Mark moves me more than any other musician, period.
The piano…. Just magic
unbelievable . and that's only a very weak description.transcendental
It makes me cry
I'M 26 YEARS OLD, I KNOW IT THROUGH MY FATHER, I'VE LISTENED TO IT SINCE I WAS 5, INCREDIBLE BAND, AND MARK KNOPLFER A GUITAR GOD
Did your dad know anything about lower-case letters?
@@daveholtz2528 your mother who knows
Rock it up.
i usually listen rock, metal, trash, punk....but dude, this solo is the best outcome a guitar can give, just magic, so perfect and melodic. Showing me who Dire Straits are is the best thing my dad gave to me.
I do wholehearted believe Dire Straits are where music peaked. There's no shame in liking other music or styles, but as it goes I think God himself was shocked with just how good dire straits are
@@The_AndroidSentByCyberlife Dire Straits are where music peaked...that is the best definition of what they were and what they meant.
6:44 onwards is a real masterclass in how to construct a solo, it's a thing of pure beauty 😀
not in a trillion years this will be reduplicated
Still enjoying this at 69 years old as good as it was back in the day . Genius
One of the greatest story telling songs of all time. Hanging on every word while the mind creates and the solo cries. A song of life, of growing up or whatever.
Greatest guitarist of all time in my opinion! Outright amazing outro to this song.
This is by far the best performance I have ever listened
Mark is a genius guitarist and personally, this is my favourite version
The best guitarist in the world playing the best solo of all time, magic !
Knopfler once was asked, what are you doing after such big events like Mandela day concert, he replied : " I m going home feeding my fish and preparing me a soup." - that's real heroism
I'm speechless.. The song sounds better in live
I was there….
Me too 😊
Peace Peace Peace
7:34 this is basically taking you to a magic place where you have no clue how that sound is being made. Mark was very gifted and brought the tone touch control of acoustic guitar to the electric guitar. Basically what he is doing is what you do on many classical guitar pieces playing with subtle tone touch technique.
The outro to this song is insanely beautiful..
The best guitar “soulo” of all time, this particular performance was from the heart, you could feel it. Unbelievable 6:40 onwards…😢
MK is without a doubt one of the greatest musical minds of our generation. Everything about this song is mind blowing - intro, outro, guitar, keys, drums and bass .Also love the driving creative guitar rhythm he gets, in particular the part 4.00 to 4.23...could listen to that on repeat forever.
D.D. went to another level when Alan 🎹 Clarke joined the band in 82
Unforgettable, heard it first time in '86, after that 100's of times over the years, still today a pleasure to see and hear a group of highly skilled musicians enjoying themselves like this, thanks much for sharing 🙏
Tunnel of Love from this show is without doubt the best ive ever heard MK Play that solo... Terry Williams is a god keeping it all together. whilst MK plays his heart out. almost brings a tear, it really is that special
Yep. :). I think that too
Exactly in my comment above . Mark is driving it on upping the pace . The whole team . One step ahead …. We with you boss !
This is real music! Dire Straits constructed a deep "Tunnel of Love" inside my heart.
All though we'll never meet and some of us might never see this, we've all shared a feeling from all over the planet. Isn't that a beautiful thing...?
Please share some more of your favourite performances someone?
MK inspired me to play the guitar and he is without doubt a master of guitar players. The sounds he is able to extract from his guitar are just so beautiful and his solos take you on a ride of pure bliss. Many guitarist's have a great repetitive riff but very few play with such emotion and precision as Knopfler does. 30 years on and the playing remains the same. Doubt whether many songs of today which feel so shallow to me will still be played in 30 plus years time and still sound as great as these guys do.
Well said mate. Spot on that👍
Mk the only one who play different versions in life than studio u can listen to different solos everytime u get to see him in concert
Same here !!!
👍
He's the man alright. I would never get bored of listening to such playing and even the songs are long i wish they could be longer, each time it finishes I exhale wiya sigh...
The waltz from Carousel sets the stage for their finest song. Others come close; none top it.
I am sitting here listening to Dire Straights, Tunnel of Love still amazed after all these years how such quality songwriting and musicianship was recorded in the 80s. How did Dire Straights ever make it at such a vacuous time for rock n'roll. These guys belonged in the hard driving 70s when rock n roll was war and took no prisoners. Well I'll tell you one thing, these guys were the best band of the eighties by a country mile.
I remember in 1993 buying the double CD of Alchemy in Colwyn Bay. Petrol expenses from the company that I was working for paid for it! Lifelong fan since :-)
I was lucky enough to see Dire Straits first time just 10 days earlier at Zagreb stadium, just 10 days before Hammersmith concerts. After 4 decades still the best concert I saw, and I saw more than 300 concerts since 1982.
You don’t “listen” to a Dire Straits concert…you participate. Luv ‘em.
Reminds me of growing up, Listening to this playing darts/computer in our bedroom as kids with my brother before he passed. Great memories. Thanks for posting. Love to all xxx
i just HAVE to say once more that i love you MK, the melody, the songs you make with your guitar is beyond words to me, that there's something right there in my chest, that I'm suffocating with joy or something else?, so beautiful your melodies, your guitar sounds are, they make me about to burst into tears, i listen to you with immense pleasure ALWAYS and this make my worries go away for a precious while at least, thank you so much for your music.
Makes me nostalgic for a place I’ve never been 🎶
The intro to this song on the Alchemy album is just as good as the outro imo. The uploader had astonishly cut the intro out for some reason. Dire Straits and Pink Floyd are my fave 2 bands of all time. I seen DS at their "On Every Street" tour in Glasgow in '92, absolutely loved it!
Thank you for getting it. I whole heartedly agree
this whole gig was Mark at his best, telegraph road is sublime!!
just look at Terry's face at the end "breathless". Top drummer. Mark ending on his knees with a smile shows that he enjoyed every second of it. To play live in this flawless manner means that this band is second to none!
80's was best time ever. Mark Knopfler is like icon of that era. Women were hotter, BMW 3-series was hotter. No corona, no war.
I have the cd of this concert, but it's fabulous to see it on here on video - wonderful drums, keyboard & of course - guitar. My favorite song by Dire Straits.
First time in more than 30 years that I'm listening this song again... It still blows me away. Once in a lifetime band and musicians. Knopfler is a genius.
It's been 25 years since I last heard it. I love it just as much as I did when I first heard it.
@@pamela-1111 Magical indeed ❤
We were there with you then, and we’re here with you now. Rock it up.
So very, very lucky to see them live in 1985. It gives me goose bumps watching this, and other live videos from the time. I've been so privileged to see them live at the height of their popularity with most of their best songs live.
Have to agree, I saw them twice that year. You knew you were watching a truly special band, a class act.🎸👍
I'll admit that I envy you that you got to see them, and at that stage in their life span as a band. It must have been an awesome concert.
Me too. I saw them twice in Hamburg. They were so good after the first time that we saw them again! I will never forget it
A masterclass.
Each concert of Mark Knopfler is a realm.
What an amazing song...Mark Knofler, for me is the greatest guitarist !!!
Dire Straits forever!! Amazing song!!!
Mark is definitely one of the best and a top 5 of all time . This song always puts me in a good mood.
Who are the other 4 ahead of him? Or where would you rate Mark in your top 5?
My favorite version.
I was lucky enough to see them in 1985 at Deeside Chester. 30 years on and it's still one of the best things I'm glad that I did. Absolutely fantastic. Micktray1, yeh hair stands on end, whats left of it anyway!
When we were kids. Brings a tear or two to my eyes.
I remember listening this song of that concert in the eighties in my old 1974 green VW with my Pioneer radio KP 3500, I was 18 years old on that moment, imagining how lucky was that people enjoying in live to MK guitar solo, amazing!! Thanks to the guy who upload this song and particularly from this concert. Guess this is the best performance of this song, recorded in the Alchemy Album. I lost that Album.
so meaningful to hear this such real memories I get tears in my eyes when I watch this its perfect thank you mark
Unmistakable Dire Straits sound, rhythm. Best rhythm of all time. Long live rock and roll and Dire Straits. Love love love them.
Jeanne, the guitar playing is beyond words...
The piano at the end is superlative....Dire Straits....One of the best bands EVER!
One of them. There are sooo many, but who can't love this? And, the whole band played fantastic.
Wonderful!!! Go Terry!!! Holding it all together. Awesome drumming.
+fitnessisgood4u Agree its a class performance. Love the grin he makes right at the end! He knows he has nailed it from start to finish
Magistral. Terry Williams. Alan Clark. Hal Lindes. John Ilsley and Mark Knopfler
Best live band I ever seen , amazing!
I hate Mark Knopfler! I’ve been playing guitar for 40 years. I can accept that. I can’t approach the technical mastery of a great guitarist. Or that I could never write anything close to the masterpieces he composes. But when I hear a great guitar solo by other great guitarist on songs that I love, I can imagine, someday playing or thinking about playing something like that. I can understand it. With Knopfler on a song like Tunnel of love I’m surprised and awestruck. In my wildest dreams I simply couldn’t even think about playing those notes he strings together. It’s simply beyond my comprehension. So I try to analyze what he does, so I could approach that genius. I want to throw my guitar away because I know I could never even think that I could approach not just Mastery but the creative mastery. It’s a gift that I was never given or that I believe very. Very, few have. I hate him, but I could never stop listening or being amazed.
Emociona hasta las lagrimas. No es el ver como entregan toda su habilidad en tocar los instrumentos y cantar; sino la calidad de la interpretacion. Fue un concierto memorable. Lo escuche del CD original; y es realmente un orgasmo musical. Grande Dire Straits
This solo is very crazy!!!
He is a miracle.
This is my ocd song. The outro pleases every bit of my of energy
This is wonderful and it makes me happy. Thank you.
THE SONG that made me pick up a guitar at 13.......now Im 44 i still love it
Literally makes that guitar SING
A really beautiful powerful song well played; given the 'live' treatment and a rousing climax.
I saw them in 1985, Birmingham, England. I'll never forget it.
top 5 live album of all time without a doubt
MARK K. YOU ARE NOT A LOCAL HERO..YOU ARE WORLDWIDE HERO
one of the best rock & roll songs of all times!
Bardzo podoba mi się gra klawiszowca, zwłaszcza przy końcu utworu, kiedy" biega" palcami po wszystkich oktawach pianina.
brilliant song writer brilliant guitarist
Mark at 10:17 delivering the kill shot. Incredible.
methinks the solo at the end of Tunnel of Love - Dire Straits is the greatest ever played by mankind ;) With due respects to Layla Hotel California Freebird Stairway to Heaven etc etc Tunnel of Love solo is the only one that will make me cry tears of joy and the feeling of being blessed to hear a guitar GOD at his finest. Hail Sir Mark Knopfler!
Strobo and Drums - the best I remember.
it was 30 years ago!!!! Wonderful video ... in 80`s.
I love 80`s :)
My one regret in life was never going to see them .still makes my hair stand on end when i listen to them
El solo de guitarra más expectacular que he podido escuchar jamás, emocionante , maravilloso
Dire Straits are the kings of dynamics.
most epic live performance ever
6mins give me chills
The solo part at the end is B E Y O N D B E L I E F !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
my favourite straits solo of al time
The lighting designer really killed it just as much as the band did holy cow!!
Great song (my favourite) great album!!!!
He is sublime.
R&R at its most melodically beautiful. MK is my musical soul brother!
Já imaginou nós dois, em Spanish City, entrando nesse Tunel of Love, ouvindo Mark tocar essa música?
É só fechar os olhos e viajar... 🙃❤️💋
Been as a kid ...now revisit as often as I can..."Spanish City"was like the Taj Mahal to us ...quote on the building
@@jamesholmes8020 Did you lived in some city around Spanish city ?
Great Song what a Fantastic Live version
Greatest finger picker to ever live RIP MARK
I love the solo in this, but the one from Sultans of Swing on the same Album, blows me away every time. It is a thing of melodic beauty.
oo they knew it was special at the time
Awesome mini drum solos!
