  • In this video I review the Zyxel GS1600-16 port managed gigabit switch. I bought this 16 port version for $99 from Amazon to act as my core switch. Inside the switch, I gain access to a console (Serial) port. I then enable a hidden telnet server on the switch to obtain console access to the switch. (Add "ip telnet" after the snmp lines to your backed up config file and the restore it back to the switch to enable this feature yourself! No serial access needed.)

I got an Extreme Networks Summit X450a-24t on ebay for $85 for my core. But this switch is pretty rad, for an Amazon find. I was actually thinking about getting this switch for my "desktop" or office switch since it's compact, fanless, and manageable. Thanks for the teardown/analysis video. Good stuff.

Yep, got mine today. I think I'll put in a 9-pin D-sub connector on the back for serial port access, too. Definitely solidly built. That web admin interface ain't half-bad, seems to have tons of features, runs Linux, and handles nearly 100% full gigabit throughput. I think we definitely have a winner, especially for sub $100.

When I mount these sideways, I attached the four rubber feet to the underside of the chassis (like normal tabletop placement where the circle markings are underneath). Then tighten the wall/plywood mounting screws just tight enough to fight me sliding it sideways. Holds tight with the rubber feet being squished slightly, pulling against the screws in the slide slots. Have to give it a couple hand whacks to remove the switch from the wall. Works great for flat and wide wooden mounting surfaces, not drywall though.

4:59 It clearly says 'section' on the scope so I think the UART decode is working fine

It's PSU gives 12V, not 5. Current is about 1.5A. Also, poweroff switch goes down after 5-6 years of just sitting on wall, perhaps, just 3-4 times used to reboot device. I've googled this video because of power pinouts. I disassembled unit, measured voltage, checked that powerline is brocken, removed powerswitch and sold red wires together and only then noticed, that powerwires on contacts are assymetric: -++- and ++--. So, -++- goes into PSU and ++-- into main cirquitboard.

Curious... You were justifiably concerned about venting/heat dissipation, but installed it in an attic?

Does this device support PPPoE and VLAN tagging (and can you set the VLAN to 201)? I am looking to switching to CenturyLink Fiber and I need to find a device that supports both these functions.

Hi, please change label and description of this video to correspond actual content. In the video you are reviewing ZyXEL GS1900-16, not GS1600-16 (not managable). Thank you

Hey I know this video is pretty old at this point, but which USB->UART board are you using here?

Not total gibberish on serial decode, 4:59 it says "BSS section a". And then maybe dumps something in binary (switch config or pieces of firmware itself?)

I am considering, among several courses, network administration as a further career. Is this the type of thing that a network administrator would be dealing with?

I used to work on some of the higher end Zyxel switches, and the CLI should be very similar to the CLI documented for the other models. Here's the CLI Reference Guide to the GS2200-8: ftp://ftp.zyxel.com/GS2200-8/cli_reference_guide/GS2200-8_1.pdf

I'm unable to get that serial port working. If I wire it RX-RX and TX-TX (which should be wrong) I do get [00][00] reponses when I try to interface it, but otherwise I don't get anything. Is that pin-out and settings right? I've got a pair of defective GS1900-24HP's. Both act the same way: SYS would keep blinking, but upon startup, it would initialize some kind of diag, that tests each port for some time. If I "interrupt" it by plugging in a cable, it just dies and only PWR led is lit. However, if I let it finish the diag mode, and I then plugin the cables, it would actually work as a dumb switch. SYS is still blinking, and ZON utility still won't find it. I wish I could get the serial port working to see what's up, and see if I could actually flash it some other way, because it seems like a configuration fault or corrupt firmware to me.

Just bought the 24 port version of this. I would absolutely love the switch if this command line interface is available on that one as well. Would be awesome if you can write down a quick 1, 2, 3 setup of how you enable it please do. Have you tried to limit telnet access to a specific vlan or ip range?

Yo Adrian I've recently purchased this switch because of your work-around for CLI management!! It's a great switch but, I can't seem to get the same level of commands as you. I called Zyxtel just now and they told me that the GS1900-16 does not have the ability to access these sets of commands! So I can see the configuration that I set in the web UI working when I do a couple of show commands, but that's pretty much it?? I cannot enter configuration mode because of it and it's a real let down! Here are the set of commands this switch currently lets me do..
    GS1900#
    clear Clear configuration
copy Copy from one file to another
    debug Debug Options
disable Turn off privileged mode command
end End current mode and change to enable mode
exit Exit current mode and down to previous mode
    no Negate command
ping Send ICMP ECHO_REQUEST to network hosts
    show Show running system information
traceroute Trace route to network hosts
I thought this was perhaps a user privilege level issue and not being able access the level 13 & 14 privileges???
I'm sure you're v/busy yet if you find the chance I'd really appreciate your insight on this!

Well after poking around a few hours. The only way I managed to get it working was to install the same firmware version as the user in this video (v2.00 AAHK.1). That version of the firmware have access to all commands. I guess Zyxel don't want buisiness grade features in a consumer grade product. Unfortunately, this version of the firmware have an incorrect css which causes all text to be the same color as the background. So the web interface is quite unusable.

Hey man, sorry for necroposting on this, but FYI if you're still using this the latest firmware supports telnet/ssh enable in the GUI
