I'm from Sheffield, I've lived there all my life, some 58 years. I guess I take it for granted being a son of Sheffield, bur it's always good to get someone else's perspective. Thanks for the video

Hi, many thanks for your comment and so lovely to hear from you. Yes, we know what you mean. We visited some Abbey ruins the other day that we have driven by for the past 20 years and that was our first visit. We are not very good at taking time off and realistically we could have spent a whole week in Sheffield as it is so pretty. People have recommended some nice places to go so we are really hoping that we can get back there and have a longer time exploring. Thanks so much for watching, take care and enjoy the rest of your week. 👍💖

You were walking by the River Don. Sheffield is surrounded by 7 hills like Rome.Part of the Don is called Salmon Pastures - Salmon still live in the Don, there is a fish ladder at Meadow Hall. One of the greenest cities in the UK.

I doubt many salmon run up don. How can we have clean air zones and dump crap in river? Put a few salmon passes in don and pretend everything is fine! Does your head in EA! Or whoever makes these decisions.

Enjoyed your video of my home city, I live less than a minute from Bishops House and have that view over the city which I never get bored of as it changes through the seasons from my back window. Almost every direction you drive outside the city center you will be going up a hill and from the top there's a great view from a different perspective and you will see what a green city it is.

Hi, many thanks for your comment, very kind of you. We were unlucky that day as there has been an accident which snarled everything up. Generally as a rule we don't travel on a Friday because it is always a bit of a nightmare but our daughters wool fair was on and we made an exception. We were very tired but had a great nights sleep so its swings and roundabouts really. We were so impressed with Sheffield that we are looking forward to going back especially as some people have recommended other places to visit. This is the problem with being self employed, you only tend to give yourself the weekend off when really you need a good week to be able to see the sights. @@BreakingFreeWithPaulAndMarie There are so many different things to see, but as you've already seen it's a hilly place which doesn't lend itself to a lot of walking unless you're very fit. The Don Valley on the east side of the city out towards the Meadowhall shopping centre and the M1 is pretty flat and it was traditionally the location of all the old steel companies and firms which have long since gone - though some do remain. Many years ago Sheffield was known as 'the dirty picture in the golden frame.' It was a grimy smoky place, but in the 50's the council set about enforcing laws on smoke, air quality and cleaning years of grime from public buildings. The 'golden frame' refers to the amazing countryside surrounding the city. On the west side is Britain's first national park - The Peak District, and in fact one third of the city's land area on the north west is mostly rural and lies within the borders of the Peak District and until fairly recently was the only city in Britain to lie within a national park. Come back and visit us soon.

My God! Which way did you go to take so long? Were you following sat nav, or did you use common sense & avoid the busiest roads, obviously not by the time it took you. Sheffield has really cleaned up a lot in recent years, mostly because it is almost totally de-industrialised since the old days. It was still pretty filthy into the later 20th century. Situated in the Yorkshire/Derbyshire hills, which is a naturally beautiful landscape, it is becoming very much nicer than it was. The Arches are just part of the structure of the bridge which carries the railway across the river. They were not built for anything special, but, as with similar arches everywhere, have been used for many purposes. They are numbered so that any problems with them, cracks or faults etc, can be located. It's like numbering lamp posts so you know which need new bulbs etc. The Heron is not a pet, but a wild bird, he's not placed there for your pleasure. There are many herons around, they live near any water courses which have food for them, along with ducks, geese, swans etc. only where the water is clean enough for wildlife. Sheffield is in a deep river valley, like Glasgow, which is why it is so hilly. Turner could not have seen that view it would have been covered in industrial murk & smog in his day.

Hi, Many thanks for your comment. I have been driving for many years and do generally use a mixture of common sense and google maps for traffic update information but unfortunately we found out later that on the day in question a lorry had flipped on the M40 and they had closed a section of the motorway which caused absolute gridlock chaos in the surrounding areas which we just could not avoid. Thank you so much for taking the time to provide all of the information, much appreciated thank you. We love Heron's, such gorgeous birds and we are fully aware that they are not a pet, when we mentioned one being placed there it was meant as a joke that someone had put a statue of a Heron there and not a real bird. Thank you so much again for taking the time to leave us a comment and hope you have a great week. 👍
