ASMR - History of Witchcraft

  • Hey guys,
    in this video, I talk about witchcraft - not as an occult practice, but from a historical prospective. I comment on how witchcraft has progressively gained, then lost, its subversive image in the Western World, from a period when it was feared by most of the population, to present time when witches shown in the media are seen more positively and often as a metaphor for persecuted minorities. Many witches depicted in novels, movies and tv shows today have lost most of their maliciousness (but what they have lost in nastiness, they have gained in breast, shiny hair and pretty faces, so who is complaining?). Interestingly, the Western tradition associates mainly women with witchcraft, does this come from the Christian tradition or other cultural specificities? Things are different in other parts of the world, for example in Africa where mainly men are accused of being witches. Sadly, it should also be noted that people in various parts of the world continue to be lynched based on their alleged practice of witchcraft.

    I'm mad at UA-cam for never showing me your vids during all these years that I've been searching for ASMR like yours! I always get those results of unnatural, forced and spitty saliva mouthed voices. Gross. Your voice is so perfect! Such natural ASMR!

    Your social and historical commentary is second to none. Ergot fungus was cited as a possible reason for the Salem events because in damp, dark cellars, it infected wheat and barley. This, in turn, went into many foods. It has been attributed to headaches, bouts of paranoia, hallucination, and even psychosis. It is a very possible and interesting school of thought on the Salem events.

      Thank you! Yes, ergot could well have played a role, this kind of poisoning was fairly common in those times.

      Actually, I don't see much difference between witchcraft and common religions. Its spells vs prayers... they both invoke a desired result, they both proffer supernatural woo woo, the only difference is their choice of imaginary masters.

    You first state that you would stick to the historical facts and then proceed to interject your own bias all throughout the video. I've been a Pagan/Witch for 30 years now and I have never regretted believing in ancestral worship, herbal medicines and energy manipulation. Some could argue that ASMR itself falls within the definition of energy manipulation which utilizes voices and noises to transfix your audiences. I've loved all of your other videos except for this one. This one actually woke me all the way up with all the inaccuracies. You could have done a better research on this vast and derivative subject.

    • @TheFrenchWhispererASMR
      @TheFrenchWhispererASMR  5 років тому +1

      Hello. I certainly have a bias, as I guess we all do. By "facts" I mean the generally admitted, broadly consensual account of people from the academic/scientific world who have studied a phenomenon. When things are not measurable or defined (terms like "energy", "spirits", "natural forces"...) and not documented, they are beliefs to me. It doesn't mean they are wrong or non-existent, they just don't fit within my approach. Every single topic I cover hurts a small but real set of people because it contradicts their views and experience. Recently I had a comment very similar to yours on the video about haunted houses from someone who saw my absence of belief in ghosts as narrow-mindedness because the phenomenon is "studied by very serious academics" (plot twist: it is not). The same happens on every subject, be they scientific or historical. I cannot count the number of times believers in so-called mainstream religions have contradicted what I said because it did not match what is in their books - I guess what they regarded as offensive in my treatment of a topic is what you found factual. Regarding witchcraft, neo-pagan beliefs and Wicca, you cannot expect anything else from me than what is in encyclopedias and admitted by people who are not a part of it: it is a form of religion from the 20th century that became popularized in the UK and US from the 1960's within a larger set of beliefs that referred to pre-christian times - and I believe that because the texts, rituals and views about what "ancestral" means are all products of the 19th and early 20th centuries, whereas there is not a single documented trace of it earlier. Now I get that some people may reject that this is a re-invention and deeply believe that the texts and traditions they refer to are ancient, that somehow they were rediscovered a century ago by inspired authors, and that their practice "works". Maybe they are right, but I cannot present it as facts because the link between their rituals and effects in the material world are unexplainable and unproven by scientific experimentation. I cannot and don't intend to argue on beliefs because I think it is pointless, I don't own the truth, and I am not trying to offend anyone. I hope we can agree to disagree on this ;).

      @@TheFrenchWhispererASMR Ancestral meaning the native beliefs of a set a people. To me, specifically it is Yoruba Orishas and Native American Shamanism (Navajo/Mexican). Traditions that has been practiced for several centuries including holistic alternatives and (herbal) rootwork besides the manipulation and channeling of energies and visions. Technically, I would be known as a Pagan since I work with at least 3 different set of belief systems but, here, I am as known as Witch/Sage/Wise woman. More recently the herbal remedies of folk medicine have been found to include many naturally occurring ingredients that are medically useful. That is why people, from ancient civilizations until now, who couldn't afford or didn't have access to doctors came to women (and men) like me to assist them with their ills and troubles. Please don't make the mistake like white men before, who has discounted our skills because they didn't understand how we treated the conditions of the mind, the body, the soul and rejected the notions that diseases and plagues were the wrath of a particular god, inherently evil or necessary human suffering. My kind has been around before the prominence of Western medicine and knew how to take religion out of the cause or solution so that we focus on the person and the problem above all. More importantly, what I am is more than just being part of a "religion". It is lifestyle and one that has been passed on for several generations, not some passing fancy of the 20th century. I can agree to disagree but just wanted you to understand that the knowledge like mine practiced in the Asian, African and Native American communities all have lineages of hundred and some even thousands of years. And by the way, "energy" is already defined as "power derived from the utilization of physical or chemical resources" and to us, it is measurable. Sincerely yours...

      Hey I have a question! I've taken french for a several years and I lived in Paris for 3 years and I was wondering how you type french easily? Is there a way to quickly type all the accents? Usually if I try to type in french I just forget the accents. Hopefully you understood this :p

    • @TheFrenchWhispererASMR
      @TheFrenchWhispererASMR  10 років тому

      Eric Robinson I'm afraid it is complicated without a French keyboard. All accents can be made with codes like Ctrl or Alt+[number] (but I don't know them). Alternatively, if you type in Word set as French and with spell checking, it can automatically correct the words and add the accents.

    I don't really get his witches=minorities thing. Modern witches in media tend to be more of a female power fantasy or hubris stories that see themselves as above mortals. Not really a great analogy for minorities. Werewolves, vampires, mutants, all way better supernatural minority aligories.
