Heck its been over 4 years since the last DLC. I quit before the DLC dropped.
The only reason we are getting new stuff now, is because of FDev's new CEO (since 2022) acknowledged ED was their bread winner and seen potential for a bit more profit. David really dropped the ball. However Elite Dangerous has lived a full decade long life cycle, and was reported as a "financial success" by Fdev, in their earnings reports. I'm not sure what else people expect from FDev, at this point. Continued support costs money, and new content and brand new mechanics and features would cost a lot of development time and money. Elite is now old money.

If the T8 has more cargo capacity it definitely should be. It's pretty much obsolete already because it needs large pads. And the thing is that the footprint of the T7 on a pad is smaller in length and width than other medium ships (eg the Python). It can't need a large pad because of mass either, because its not the most massive medium (not even with full cargo... a Dropship will full cargo can mass 750t to the T7's 660t). The only dimension that the T7 is the largest in is height. It's just a little bit taller than other medium ships. Meaning the only explanation for why it needs large pads is that Lakon engineers were so incompetent that they designed what's clearly a medium ship, but forgot to check the headroom in a medium bay.
While I agree with the intent of your comment, very few games these days are using forward rendering paths that would allow the best type of antialiasing with ideal compromises of IQ and performance (MSAA), so Frontier really could only add software based AA, all of which come with their own set of IQ problems. Instead, if you have a modern and fast GPU, you should already be using downsampling as an improvised AA in most games. On nVidia this is called Dynamic Super Resolution (DSR), and on AMD this is called VSR (Virtual Super Resolution). DSR and VSR allows you to render the game at a higher internal resolution (say, at 5K or 8k) which is then scaled down to your monitors native resolution (say, 1440p), and is similar to SuperSampling antialiasing in both IQ, but unfortunately also for the significant increase in demand on the GPU.
What a squandered opportunity this game has been. Could have been the most immersive and lifelike space MMO out there. A lot of the framework is already there: the galaxy, the ships, the economy... but seems like theyre just not interested in making it. Game still feels like its in test mode 10 years later

I preordered the Odyssey beta and it was useless on the PC I had. I built a new PC to go along with my 6 monitor cockpit. I got sick of waiting for ED to get better. I dismantled my cockpit and stopped playing. I’m now playing Starfield. There’s like 7k people playing on average in the last 30 days. ED only has an average of 2.5k in the last 30. It may not be for everyone but I love Starfield. No more 30 minute flights only to play a mini game with a pirate that wants my juicy cargo or land at a station and look at pictures of faction leaders.
i havent played it since 2019 and kept waiting for them to add that for my return. it breaks the immersion and makes a large livable ship feel like a small fighter or like its not actualy my ship@@Nartanek
i hate to parrot the rest of the comments but this really would have been cool as something to keep me interested during the release period of odyssey, not something years later for a game i've become far too jaded about.
Maybe I'm crazy, but to me that screams form over function. I don't doubt I could have misunderstood something, but I really don't see how such a shape would make any practical sense for a hauler vessel : the super long front "arms" that gives the ship more footprint for seemingly no reason, the "folding" engines that kind of separate from the main body of the ship for god knows what purpose ... For all my Elite years, I've always "trusted" the ships I was flying around in the sense that I knew they looked the best way they could to fit their niche. It makes sense for a Mamba to have super long front arms as it's a Lambo luxury kind of craft, as much as it makes sense for the Type-7 to be a brick, the Dolphin to be a stylish fish or the Corvette to look like a warship. Not only that, but I'm pretty sure every ship had their interior thought-out in a way that made people outside the Frontier team (like FRj) able to fill every nook and cranny with rooms, hallways, and systems that made perfect logical sense.. Anyways, in the end maybe that's just me, but I really do think we might just be witnessing the complete loss of what made Elite's ship designs "click" in the first place..
I like it! However I agree with many others, I whish there were some new experiences to do with it other than the same things we've been doing for years.
I just started X4. I don't think I'm going back to ED for quite some time unless they add something legitimately new. It might just be time for ED to fade and for FDev to start working on the next iteration. With everything learned from this game's lifecycle and bringing in new management they might actually be able to deliver something better.
That's what killed it for me when Odyssey first came out. I had been playing it in VR almost every evening. Overnight I lost interest. I was an early backer with a lifetime pass.
SCO drives are a lot of fun :) I no longer get deterred from 200k ls distances and bounty hunting with an interdictor kicks ass with it because you can skip the entire "catching up" phase, able to interdict while boosting with the SCO If you just wanna fly again and maybe accept a few random missions for high-grade engineering mats, I highly recommend it. It's the same old, silly grind. But the flying part still feels great and SCO is a really nice addition since one can buy those in rating A and engineer them. With long-range and a mass manager, they have a better jump range than even the pre-engineered FSDs - it's nuts :D
adding a ship for money is totally fine as long as we can grind for it in game at a later date. that is a great way to monetize something in my opinion.
I don't understand the design though. Those front pylons are clearly designed to carry cargo containers. It would only make sense to have additional cargo modules visible over there when installed.
Nice ship, but i have two questions : a. Why after paying for the bloody game , do i need to wait more time to try it out unless i pay for the damn thing ? b. What am i going to do with another cargo hauler ? The same shit since day 1 ?
I expect the cargo capacity to be a little better than the Python's, it is a medium sized ship after all. But the Python to still be a better ship overall. It should be a great cargo ship! And it'll be nice to have another medium ship option that does cargo/trading well. I expect the price tag to be...., I'd say around 30 or 40 mill.
this will be a useful ship for those trade routes such as where gold is sold from medium landing pad starport and sold at a very low price such as 4500 per ton.
New ships are always nice. Need about 15 more ships. but the games needs more depth and more locations. Add cities, Add quests. And some personal stories. Add narrative given by npcs. Just more stuff to do. If you gave this game to Bethesda softworks for like 2 years to work on and cook up a huge dlc it would be soooo cool.
I like the cabin design in an exploration cruiser, it is an attractive mothership for SRVs or fighters Im guessing the slots are gonna suck for that though
I think it's time we either get actual atmospheric planetary landing or we get Elite Dangerous 2 if the current engine can't handle it. I'm not going back to the game just to fly a new transport ship when the current game main story is still focused on space combat. It's like they didn't learn anything from Odyssey being released too early (no ship interior, no alien wildlife, no player bases).
on one hand i'm wondering why i picked the hottest week of the year to get back in to VR stuff but it's quickly replaced by excitement for how nice this ship looks. hauling is super chill but the Type-9 is miserable to fly, so really hope that this is a nice alternative!
Looks like a Argo Mole from Star citizen. But star citicen has taken some designs from elite as well example the CO Nomad Looks just like a Asp explorer. With these new ships maybe Frontier can give us more space for Modules so we can store more than 200 without having to get T10s to hold all our parts
As cool as it looks and as tempted as I am to start playing again, I don't think that any new ship (except maybe the Imperial Explorer or a big Guardian hybrid ship) will bring me back to the game. It's a shame, because I loved Elite, and have fond memories from both the Horizons and Beyond days of the game. These days it feels like it's just treading water.
I'm sure I'm stating the obvious but it looks like the arms at the front of a forklift. As if it will fly under massive containers, attach and fly off. That would be a unique cargo transporting mechanism.
Yes, that design might have made sense for that - if there was anything to connect to it, and cargo loading wasn't already invisible instant magic. None of the station infrastructure has provisions for handling cargo high. Come to think of it, ship yards don't have any in game representation either.
Love that ED is getting new ships but sadly it feels to late at this point, even the most loyal have seemed to have moved on, trading is non-existent without the 3rd party websites to set routes

Great-looking ship. I like how they have fit in existing manufacturer design with new overall models, hooray for continuity. That being said why the hell are the red-hot emissive heatsinks pointed *directly at the canopy*?! Overall, I'm excited for the first time in a while, maybe I can finally get back into it for a purpose other than feeding my carrier from my wallet.
I'm guessing the "special" feature will be an external cargo module that would be added to the top of the ship? Would make sense to me since it doesn't look like the ship offers a whole lot of cargo space otherwise, especially compared to the type 7 which it is supposed to be superior to. The type 8 could be a bit more agile if the extra cargo module isn't added or something like that.
Every single standout feature of this "cargo" ship screams less storage space. And there's an obvious target for shipping that isn't this; the type 7 is mis-scaled. We should have a cargo ship that barely fits on a medium pad, just as we have a panamax ship standard.
Aside from looking cool, it doesn't look like a very practical cargo hauler. What is the purpose of the two extensions extending from the front of the ship? Would cargo containers be mounted to them? If not, where does the cargo fit in this design?
they're just releasing the ships they've had in storage for a few years while getting ready to shutter the whole thing. Certainly they're not spending time developing new ships.
So for a ship designed to haul cargo... where does the cargo actually go? It's designed like a fighter. Where's the actual cargo storage? Where's the giant bay? The type-6 is a flying brick because it's a moving van, the type-7 and 9, also a brick, because y'know, they're made to store cargo. This one is small and lean and has tons of its mass just not in a way that can be utilized for cargo. Like the giant arms and nacelles taking up 50% of its size. Where's the rows of cargo containers on the outside or the giant bay on it?

In fact, My second account, The stingy-ass Rick Sanchez 3L-17E may well be a couple of dozen iterations off the Central Finite Curve, but he is also just a couple of Kylies south of Beagle Point! If only the Type 7 had Medium pad landing capability it would be such a blessing... apparently they designed the ship 50cm too tall for the Outpost Medium hangars and it clips ever so slightly through the ceiling, so they did a complete FDEV and rather than fixing it removed the capability to land on M pads altogether. A new ship is really not going to revolutionise the game or remove much of the disappointment of not introducing ship interiors

This being a medium ship will be its greatest strength as a trader and miner. Also it’s imo the best looking non-combat oriented Lakon ship there is.
I tried to come back, but as soon as i went on foot in Vr to get my exploration gear, i had to log off . That flat screen is just too much for me .

You could also enter free camera. Plus VR is nog necessary to enjoy it.

New ships are always nice. Need about 15 more ships.
but the games needs more depth and more locations. Add cities, Add quests. And some personal stories. Add narrative given by npcs.
Just more stuff to do.
If you gave this game to Bethesda softworks for like 2 years to work on and cook up a huge dlc it would be soooo cool.
I like the cabin design in an exploration cruiser, it is an attractive mothership for SRVs or fighters Im guessing the slots are gonna suck for that though

I think it's time we either get actual atmospheric planetary landing or we get Elite Dangerous 2 if the current engine can't handle it.
I'm not going back to the game just to fly a new transport ship when the current game main story is still focused on space combat. It's like they didn't learn anything from Odyssey being released too early (no ship interior, no alien wildlife, no player bases).
It's nice to see any new content, I just wish it was more than new ships. I hope they keep at it.

but it's quickly replaced by excitement for how nice this ship looks. hauling is super chill but the Type-9 is miserable to fly, so really hope that this is a nice alternative!
Looks like a Argo Mole from Star citizen. But star citicen has taken some designs from elite as well example the CO Nomad Looks just like a Asp explorer. With these new ships maybe Frontier can give us more space for Modules so we can store more than 200 without having to get T10s to hold all our parts
As cool as it looks and as tempted as I am to start playing again, I don't think that any new ship (except maybe the Imperial Explorer or a big Guardian hybrid ship) will bring me back to the game. It's a shame, because I loved Elite, and have fond memories from both the Horizons and Beyond days of the game. These days it feels like it's just treading water.
I'm sure I'm stating the obvious but it looks like the arms at the front of a forklift. As if it will fly under massive containers, attach and fly off. That would be a unique cargo transporting mechanism.
Cargo containers are probably going to be a thing. I can't think of any other reason to have arms like that on a cargo ship.
Yes, that design might have made sense for that - if there was anything to connect to it, and cargo loading wasn't already invisible instant magic. None of the station infrastructure has provisions for handling cargo high. Come to think of it, ship yards don't have any in game representation either.
Take out the 1st person combat on foot and just let us walk around our ships and space stations and we'll all come back.

Great-looking ship. I like how they have fit in existing manufacturer design with new overall models, hooray for continuity. That being said why the hell are the red-hot emissive heatsinks pointed *directly at the canopy*?!

I'm guessing the "special" feature will be an external cargo module that would be added to the top of the ship? Would make sense to me since it doesn't look like the ship offers a whole lot of cargo space otherwise, especially compared to the type 7 which it is supposed to be superior to.
The type 8 could be a bit more agile if the extra cargo module isn't added or something like that.
Every single standout feature of this "cargo" ship screams less storage space. And there's an obvious target for shipping that isn't this; the type 7 is mis-scaled. We should have a cargo ship that barely fits on a medium pad, just as we have a panamax ship standard.
Aside from looking cool, it doesn't look like a very practical cargo hauler. What is the purpose of the two extensions extending from the front of the ship? Would cargo containers be mounted to them? If not, where does the cargo fit in this design?
Man, I wish they would reengineer whatever system handles the AA. I know they gave up on it but would be nice.

they're just releasing the ships they've had in storage for a few years while getting ready to shutter the whole thing. Certainly they're not spending time developing new ships.

So for a ship designed to haul cargo... where does the cargo actually go? It's designed like a fighter. Where's the actual cargo storage? Where's the giant bay? The type-6 is a flying brick because it's a moving van, the type-7 and 9, also a brick, because y'know, they're made to store cargo. This one is small and lean and has tons of its mass just not in a way that can be utilized for cargo. Like the giant arms and nacelles taking up 50% of its size. Where's the rows of cargo containers on the outside or the giant bay on it?
The T10 is a brick because it's a modified T9 for combat. The T9 is the one that's a brick designed to store cargo.
Until there is player agency in the game that allows you and your friends to say build space stations I don’t think I’ll be coming back. Last login was Oct 31 2018 for me.

why can't they just have made the Type 7 into a medium ship... I love that flying coffin... In fact, My second account, The stingy-ass Rick Sanchez 3L-17E may well be a couple of dozen iterations off the Central Finite Curve, but he is also just a couple of Kylies south of Beagle Point! If only the Type 7 had Medium pad landing capability it would be such a blessing...
apparently they designed the ship 50cm too tall for the Outpost Medium hangars and it clips ever so slightly through the ceiling, so they did a complete FDEV and rather than fixing it removed the capability to land on M pads altogether.
A new ship is really not going to revolutionise the game or remove much of the disappointment of not introducing ship interiors
