I can't thank you enough for your attitude and foresight to put this tutorial out there. Not only did you save me a lot of money, I had fun doing the job myself. You did a totally selfless thing. You have my gratitude.
I just replaced the top on my 1990 Miata, Identical to the one you did. I wish I would have watched this video before ordering my top, didn't have any accessories or pre stringed for tension cable. Followed the video all the way through and probably would have taken 20 hrs without this video. It still took me about 10 hrs, anyways great job on the video, thanks for posting it.
I can't thank u enough I went in to this project not knowing what I was doing saw your video and it was a piece of cake for me thank you awesome video 👍
Hey Buddy! A massive thanks for the video. Followed your advise and the new soft top is holding water and looking great. A couple of tips for anyone in the future. If you are trying to change the soft-top in winter/colder conditions either warm your work-space up or use hairdryers to blast the top and soften the material when it's proving troublesome. This proved useful when trying to slip the top into the "B" pillars. If, after attaching the top you can't get it closed - You can use small ratchet straps on either side (set between the door hinge and the middle hinges on the softop frame) to add pressure and let it stretch. Slowly ratchet it over a couple of hours and it will hopefully close, abeit tightly. (Also, like I said add heat!)
My friend bought a top for his car and I followed your instructions. Thanks. I really wasn’t prepared for how long it took. I spent 6 hours on it and I still have to put the trim and panelling back in. Also your top didn’t have the plastic rain skirt on it like my friends did. It needed to be drilled out and re riveted. That took time. Also we fought with the clips holding it down for a good half hour till we loosened the back off. I didn’t discover your tip about adjusting the clips till after I finished doing the car.
I have an NB and I just learned from you that the installer didn't hook those last 2 end connectors on the rain rail. Can't thank you enough for the excellent tutorial/demonstration. Next time I need to do a soft top I am going to get a rivet gun and install my own top.
Great video, I had this video open and following along as I did mine and after it was done it was pretty simple. The rivets I used were 5/32" in case anyone was wondering the size. Also, the long ratchet extension made life easy. Thanks again. And yes, my rain rail drains were clogged!
Thank you so much, dude! I couldn't have changed the top without this video. The only thing that I was confused about and that you didn't show was how the top should be riveted to the frame near the mounting points. Mine came with a plastic piece with pre-made holes, but I also had to cut holes into the cloth to make it sit the right way around, which was very confusing to me.
I have been following this video, i just want to say this video was so helpful! Props to you for filming a video while doing this yourself bc its not easy
Thanks so much for the video, I just referenced it several times installing my new Robbins OEM-style top on my 94. Mine didn't come with the slip on protectors for the end of the bow like yours did, but otherwise it was spot on. Took me about 5 hours start to finish, taking my time, with a helper.
Thanks to this vid the top is on. It's so tight when I flick it with my finger it sounds like a drum. It was soo tight could hardly latch it shut. A couple days in sunshine fixed that. Still makes drum sound. A couple finer points about this job. First off I guess your replacement top came with attached rain rail. I had to install my old cracked rain rail to the bottom of my new top with rivetts. That was more of a pain than it sounds as normal 1/4 inch length rivets where hair too short. Finally got longer rivets with box of correct sized washers. The next struggle was installing th frame the secures rain rail at back. Its tough. Finally realized that I could sit on center arm console reach up and push frame with foot, so to get nut started
Great video! Thanks a bunch for doing this. It will really help me when I do mine. My only issue with the video, is that I would liked to have seen the rain rail installation. He also said he was not using the supplied round cushions. I thought those were used on a NA, no?
Very good video.... except where is the part where you install the rain rail? Did you get the top with it already installed if not when did you put it on? Thanks
Ty so much!!! Now I just need to figure out how to get her started! The anti-theft system button doesn't work anymore and apparently no one In my town knows how to disable the stupid thing
the biggest part of installation that in not seeing included with video's is how the "listing"/headliner gets routed and attached when the new top goes on. You show what they area looks like while taking off the old top but don't show hope it goes together.
Once you drill out the rivets and take off the old top do you need to install new rivets for the new top or can you use something else to hold it in place?
most basic installation there is of a convertible top...I've done a zillion of those, always with a quality top!not worth spending 4 hours folded in half for a lousy result!so for those buying $150 tops online, you get what you pay for...in the long run it might come back and bite you in the @$$!
Can anyone help I lost the piece at 24:00 the little metal cover over the corner, can anyone tell me if it is needed or not or if so where could I get it
Like so many others this VID totally failed to REALLY help with the INSTALLATION part!! Nothing was stated about needing to expand open the channel for the strip on the top bows then cinching them. Also getting the braces BACK ON over the rain rail!!! The bolts are a bit too short and the rain rail has to be compressed... while you are crushed down into the back behind the window. PAIN! If there was a trick to it, it should have been in the vid! Instead the vid spends time on irrelevant things like the worthless cap for the tip of 1 bow that was supplied which does nothing. or obvious stuff like the springs. For those watching this and others like it BEWARE! Installation of the new top is all pain!

Excellent video, the paper instructions that come with the Robbins top are rudimentary, this step by step eased us through the process nicely, Thanks!

Thank you so much, dude! I couldn't have changed the top without this video.

BL4CKF0X yeah mine had pre-made holes as well. Shouldn't have to cut any holes in the cloth, but hey, if it works it works!
This is great. My son is going to replace mine. I'm so happy I came across this. Same car and in white . I wish mine looked like this.
I have been following this video, i just want to say this video was so helpful! Props to you for filming a video while doing this yourself bc its not easy

Once you drill out the rivets and take off the old top do you need to install new rivets for the new top or can you use something else to hold it in place?
