Im a 32 year old and run a 400 person plant club at work. Ive been spreading info about orchid societies the moment I discovered we had one in san francisco! hopefully I can get more younger folks interested
Hi there! Thanks for the video and knowledge. I'm up in northern Canada so much closer to the North Pole than Melbourne lol. See an odd Sarco at meetings but they never look that good so I bit the bullet and ordered a flask last spring from Taiwan. It was rather smallish with only 16 plants and 2 has no roots but here we are in November and all 16 are still alive with 14 thriving and the rootless ones are starting to perk up now. It was my first de-flask ever so I followed some advice and innoculated all the seedlings with Mycorrhizal transplant aid and potted them in 2" pts with a mix of seedling Orchiata, perlite and chopped up rockwool. Very free draining but holds some moisture. Water 2X a week and they are really starting to grow with a few having developed 1-2 babies. Grown indoors in a south window with 70% shade cloth protection. The sun is getting pretty weak already in our neck of the woods so I may remove the shade protection shortly. Cheers mate!
Thank you for opening your home and showing this wonderful collection. The hints and tips of long term growers are always appreciated. I'm glad that I'm not drowning my little plants with too much water! Thanks again.
Thank you for this colaboration. I learnt so much. Just needed this one. Following your advice I joined the Burwood orchid society and went to a show. I bought a sarcochilis unnamed and not in bloom , the grower had no idea what it would be. It turned out pink with white speckles. However it has the most amazing fragrance, .it fills my dining room and hall way when you enter the house. I was going to buy more as I thought that they all smelled like this. Well the flower is worth it and the fragrance will be a bonus if the next one has it too. Have a great week.
Thank you for this wonderful vid, such a beautiful Sarcochilus collection both you and Dan have. I took my first step into Sarcochilus world last year when I bought two plants from a local Nursery here in Geelong. After joining. the local Orchid club, I found untold wealth of information on watering them. They had been looking rather " sad " due to my lack of watering, now having increased the watering, one is doing much better and I cross my fingers for the other. I did, however come home with two more from a recent 1.our local Orchid show and 2. after our Orchid meet with guest speaker whom had some Orchids for sale and I couldn't resist. The recent arrivals are in bloom, one is Hartmannii " Good one " and the other a delicate pink with white spots is Piccaninny 'ky' x Kulnura Dazzel ' Poka Dots ' hopefully, I can keep them alive and one day have a nice collection like you and Dan.
Gorgeous plants! I love the shape of the flowers! I haven't found any in my area from the growers i know, so I'll be checking out the link. And our club, thankfully, have quite a few younger growers. (I'm 49 feeliing like 105 some days, lol) Thanks for another great video and information!
Hiding behind all those glorious blooms, your use of the words “struggling to grow” makes me giggle. Thank you lad, I bought one of these at an orchid show and had no idea how to look after it. So this has reassured me that I made some good decisions.
Thank you for this video! I love his outdoor setup. We are about to build an arbor like his so I feel good that my design is right on target. I don’t have any sarchos so I am interested to give them a try. Also, I had a mouse in the house and the little jerk chewed off a bloom spike on one of my oncidiums!! I nearly lost my mind! Had to give a talking to to my 3 dogs and 2 cats!!😂😂
Thanks for watching - and a Swedish viewer reliably informs us they do really well for her outside in summer inside in winter and flower really well! Go for it!
Fabulous Matthew😄🙌I enjoyed seeing Dan's Sarchocilus orchids and listening to the care tips👏💞I can't find any Sarchocilus in Japan on my go-to-website, but when I do I will try growing one.
Hello! Beautiful collection ❤️ both Din and Dan's! Thanks for the tips and good advice!🌸🌿 I am completely new to Sarcochilus since a year ago😃 no flowers yet but now we have winter here in Sweden. Thanks for an interesting video 🌸🌿
I bought my sarc. hartmannii from the ANOS show this year and its blooming was just beautiful. Very gentle and solft white floral scent. Currently growing it inside with a grow light next to a fan. I also live in Melbourne and have problems with mice/rats eating my outside plants. I found 8% eucalyptus oil spray is a very useful deterrent.
Thanks for the advice on eucalyptus oil spray, also found by accident after soaking my Sarcs what appeared to be miniture slugs escaping from the drain holes of the pots. Both contributed to a poor flowereing year.
Wow! So many sarcochilus in lovely blooms! Great nursery visit, loved it! Dan is very knowledgeable about this genes! How about cooler dry winter rest? Thanks for sharing and happy growing.
I love growing sarcochilus. I love the blooms and compact from the plants, but I'm growing my in the house( North Carolina), not outside . thank you for this video.
Great video! Thanks so much! I grow Sarcs in Germany. They spent the summer on the balcony and in winter, they grow on a south facing window in our bedroom (cold). They love it and flower reliably. So no problem at all growing them indoors.
Thanks again for this info video,I grow sarcs in very similar conditions to Dan,and this has been great info, and has answered a few questions I've had rattling around my head for a while, thankyou, thankyou, thankyou both.❤
Such a lovely Guy I love the deferent color I hope I have one lol😅😂 but her my country that kind of orchid's is very expensive 😅😅😅 .. sending love💌💌 from Philippines 🇵🇭 happy planting 🌺❤❤
What a lovely video. Fabulous array of colours. You are tempting me so much for a new greenhouse purchase! How often do you water yours, Matthew? Thanks for sharing 😊
They'd do so well in your greenhouse Rachel! I don't really have a watering schedule; maybe every 3-4 days in summer unless its boiling hot in which case more. And about once a week in winter. Dan waters EVERY day in the warmer months and his plants look amazing.
@@helloplantlovers Yes, I heard Dan's schedule and his leaves are amazing. Your watering schedule sounds more like something I could get on board with though ;-) Love all the pinks and your take-home is a dote.
It was a pleasure to watch Amazing collection. Regarding water how much would you give individual pots volume wise ? It would certainly take a while to water daily. Looking forward to part 2
It was surprising to me that Dan waters daily in summer in the plastic pots. Your watering regime is less in terracotta which I thought required more frequent watering. It certainly differs from person to person with lots of trial & error. Thankyou for sharing
I think sarchocilus will do well here in the Peidmont of South Carolina. What was the name(s) of the fragrant species? Have watched your show for a couple of years and I appreciate the way you explain orchids. Thank you!
This was so interesting, sarcochilus are so beautiful! We're in the Mediterranean, and grow our australian dendrobiums indoors, with a couple of months outside for cold in the winter. Do you think that would also work with these?
Dan gets his through his local orchid group - they buy it in bulk and then distribute it to members. Other wise there are many sellers of it on Ebay - just type in Orchiata bark in the search bar and you'll see all the options.

Slugs ate my buds last year too!@@BlackCat-fr4ue
Who would have thought mice loved orchid buds!! Dan had the same problem.
Wow...your Sarcochilus are busting with colour!!! Im so amazed. The Sarcs are not happy in my home here in Brisbane North.
hanks for watching! Really? I would have thought they'd be happy?
Second the love for orchiata bark, it is so nice and hard it will easily last a good three years. I’m in the US and get it from Amazon.
Thanks for watching - good to know!
I’m thinking about trying to cultivate this orchids in my country (Portugal) because the climate is really similar just inverts the seasons.
Yes! They'd do really well there! Good luck!
Wow! So many sarcochilus in lovely blooms! Great nursery visit, loved it! Dan is very knowledgeable about this genes! How about cooler dry winter rest? Thanks for sharing and happy growing.
Thanks for watching! They get cooler winter temperatures as they are outside, and we both water less in winter.
Thank you for this incredible video full of information as well as inspiration. I can't wait for my little one to bloom. Definitely buying more🎉🎉🎉
Thanks for watching - they become addictive!!

Absolutely - they take basically the same conditions. Good luck!
Which orchid blooming hanging on the wall red on the background while you were talking? It seems different type of orchid? 14:38
It's a Masdevallia - we took some footage which I'll use in a Masdevallia update later on!
Hello, I am just starting your grow orchids and I would like to know if this type also gets a virus like cymbidiums? Thanks
I've not experienced it - but I couldn't say definitively!

@helloplantlovers yes have searched online, it costs as much for the cartage as it does for the product, unfortunately.
@dianecollins2735 thanks Diane, I used to buy through Garden City Plastics, here in Dandenong but they no longer sell it to the public. Thanks again.
