  • The recordings I am posting here are my favorites from the Spoken Arts library, from my favorite genres: horror & sci-fi. It has taken me literally 25+ years to track all of these recordings down!

Some of you may remember these recordings from the LP's back in the 1970s, but for most of you, this will be the first time you have ever heard these!
These are probably the best renditions of these classic stories I have ever come across…The acting is top-notch, the music is original and moving, and the overall production value is wonderful!
I have listened to these Spoken Arts versions since I was a child, and have easily racked up many hundreds of plays for each story over the years!
All the stories I have here are transferred from tape to digital. I have done my best to eliminate as much hiss as possible, while still maintaining the integrity of the production.
It is my firm hope that one day, Yale University will see fit to release all of these wonderful stories on CD, and give them the sound quality and attention they deserve! If anyone has any additional information regarding these recordings, please drop me a message :-)
Founded in 1956 by Dr. Luce and Arthur Klein, Spoken Arts, Inc. was one of the first companies to record the spoken word. The company’s first news release clearly stated its mission “to encourage a revival and reevaluation of the importance of the spoken word.”
On July 5th, 2001,Yale University and the Klein Family signed an agreement to establish the Klein Archive as part of the University’s Historical Sound Recordings (HSR) Collection. In this agreement, Spoken Arts master tapes, a comprehensive collection of all commercially-produced Spoken Arts recordings, as well as the company’s business records became part of the collections of the Yale University Library. Shortly thereafter, all of the master tapes of from recordings sessions were digitized. (from the Yale University Library website - web.library.yale.edu/collectio...)

I've been looking for this version of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea for years!
I had this in the 80s.

Thanks for these old audio dramas. This is among the best audio drama versions of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. I remember Frankenstein when it came out but have never heard any of the others.

In the '70's, I had a number of sets of these recordings. These were from the Adventure boxed series, ss I recall. Can you advise me as to where I could repurchase or find copies? Loved, and still do. "....you LOVE the sea......

I'm so glad to hear that you enjoy these! That's great :-)
As far as the CD versions go, there are none that exist at this point. The library that holds the right to the master tapes has not released them on CD, and has no plans to at this point. However, they did say that I could get copies made of the master tapes, but the initial copy is expensive. At some point I'm thinking of doing a fundraiser in order to get the funds necessary to purchase a CD of the master tapes so I can repost them in all of their original glory!

@@nightmaretheater_TheCount has there been any progress on getting a digital copy of the master tapes for 20k leagues under the sea?
Thank u so much for posting these radio shows used to visit my grandparents in VERY rural Arkansas and late at night they would re broadcast old "theater of the mind" shows and the like (no one in broadcast range even had a t.v. so this was amazing back in the day. Brings me back.

    Sir,
I just found your channel while I was making a digital recording of my cassette copy of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. What are the odds of that?! I made a digital copy of Dracula from my cassette copies years ago and am attempting to make copies of the remaining titles I have. I have "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", "Treasure Island" (has some bad spots in the tape), "Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and "Mark Twain Stories". I saw your comment about the Yale Library making digitized copies of these after acquiring the rights, however in an email I just received from them today, they have not digitized anything other than the "Mark Twain Stories". Where can I download an .mp3 copy of the items you have? Once I digitize my copies, how can I get them to you to preserve on your channel?

Hello David 😊 I would say the odds of that are pretty slim! Please send me a personal email here at my UA-cam channel, and I will confer with you further about this. I'm anxious to here these! Thanks 👍

Is this the broadcast from The General Mills Radio Adventure Theater, hosted by Tom Bosley, in March 13, 1977?

No, this was a different audio drama. I don't think this was ever released on the radio. It was only released on LP's and cassette tapes.

This is wonderful. Is it unabridged? (I subscribed!)

    • @nightmaretheater_TheCount
      @nightmaretheater_TheCount  2 роки тому +2

Thank you for the subscription! No, it's not unabridged. However, they did a very good job of retaining the essence of the story and the main points in a drama that is less than an hour long 👍
