    I noticed when you INITIALLY arranged the crankshaft timing mark (before putting belt on), the crankshaft mark was half a tooth to the right of (clockwise) to the pointer on egine block. This evened out when belt tension ajusted and slack was taken out of left side of belt. This is notworthy, as Honda Service Manual does not mention this. Thank you>

      Question , so i got everything on timing but once i spin the crank around timing is always off, i noticed mine can not get the first tension when beginning from crank to exhaust cam gear…, am i doing something wrong??
      Or is my belt maybe stretched already??
      Any answers will be much appreciated.

    Decent start for my wifes car, now break out the degree wheel and dial indicators. Set those cams to spec. So much potential to be had setting up both cams to spec.

    if you just rotate the engine 3 teeth the left and top of the timing belt will be tight, then just tighten up the tensioner and you're good. The whole rotating the engine a rull revolution isn't necessary

    Hello and thank you for this video, it's probably the most helpful and detailed tutorials amongst the rest on UA-cam. The timing belt snapped on my 99 crv a month ago. I researched online and saw videos like yours on how to replace it. I'm aware that this is an interference engine so I performed a "dry" compression test on each cylinder,. The results were cylinder 1 and 2 were at 200psi each, cylinder 3 and 4 at 190 each. Knowing this I felt "lucky" I was to be able to just have to replace the timing belt and tensioner. When I I opened up the top and bottom end covers I saw the belt mangled and in pieces, the crank sensor destroyed, and lower part of the timing cover cracked and bent. I went ahead and replaced the damaged parts with used but good physical condition parts, the timing belt and tensioner new from Gates. I alligned all the timing marks and tensioned the belt just like in your video. Rotated the motor over 10 times and everything lined up, I was confident.
    After putting everything back together and buttoning everything up I turned the key over, it started right after a second. It idled good and sounded healthy, no misfiring sound from the exhaust pipe. But once I took it out for a drive I noticed acceleration was hesitant and very late in reaction, throttle felt smooth but power on demand was all over the place. I'm confused, I don't know what's causing this? If you could point me in a direction that'd be great, thanks!

      What it sound like to me is that your off a teeth on one of your cams. Double check your timing marks and send me a picture of the Cams and the mark of the crank pully to timing cover. I believe the b20 head has pins in the cam plate to lock them into place but I don't remember. Send me the picture on Instagram @vangmotive that way we can communicate better about your issues.

      @@vangmotive7023 Hi thanks for the reply. I've been busy and then trying to figure out this timing situation, it's quite overwhelming at times. I believe my intake cam WAS off a tooth because I kept aligning them based on how evenly tilted they stood rather than focusing on aligning them with the timing lines on the black cover behind them, after doing so everything seems timed 95% I would say depending from the angle you're looking at it. The only thing I noticed is that the intake cam gear looks tilted more to the left than the exhaust gear but all the marks line up, on the crank too. Now that I recall this is how I remember them being originally positioned when I replaced the valve cover gasket last year, I imagined this isn't an issue? If I keep advancing or retarding a tooth it throws everything off, so I'm hopeful this is the way it's suppose to be set? Sorry I don't use social media. Any further advice is appreciated thank you.

    • @vangmotive7023
      @vangmotive7023  Рік тому

      You just want to align to marks at the cam gear to each other. The little line with the cam says up and crank to the timing cover or the block

      @@vangmotive7023 UPDATE: Hi its been a while but my nightmare has finally came to an end. So I kept busting my head trying to figure out why after lining up the timing marks and resulting in sluggish acceleration, I completely overlooked checking the ignition timing after finishing? 😆
      Dummy me! I sent my car to a reputable only honda family repair shop here in Gardena California and they figured this out for me, what a relief since I was thinking the worst.. Anyway the guy that worked on my car said ignition timing was waaayy too retarded thus resulting in lack of power, he said it's suppose to be at stock 15 degrees. My question is that I keep reading some forums stating 16 degrees? The car runs pretty strong now and even accidentally chirped the tires shifting into second gear driving it a bit aggressive, doesn't ping going uphill anymore like it used to either. This is a 99' crv 5spd b20b btw.. So does this one degree difference of any concern? Thanks again

    This is not the way specified in the workshop manual. 🤔
    Normally, you have to turn the crankshaft pinion by 3 teeth, and then tighten the tensioner roller.

    Are you sure your intake cam isn't off a tooth? Why were you ok with so much slack between the cams when you first install the thing. seems wrong.

    • @vangmotive7023
      @vangmotive7023  7 місяців тому +1

      The camera angle makes it look off slightly, you gotta remember 1 tooth is a lot and very noticeable. The slack to start is normal, you just gotta rotate it like what I was showing to pull all the slack towards the tensioner to eliminate the slack. Alot of people don't know how to pull the slack towards the tensioner, that's why I started it with slack on the belt to Imitate how you would start on yours.

    • @Lafue108
      @Lafue108 7 місяців тому

      @@vangmotive7023 Looking more closely, I think the exhaust cam rotated as you were installing the belt and is why there's so much slack between cams at 2:00. Yes, at least it was rotated the correct direction from the crank when relying on the spring to set tension; albeit, i think you only need to turn it 3 teeth to set tension while on a NEW spring.

    • @vangmotive7023
      @vangmotive7023  7 місяців тому

      @Lafue108 Yeah, this is only for teaching people how to do it. Usually I would just set it one time and pull the slack towards the tensioner, lock it up, rotate it and check marking and call it done.
