  • Eberlestock is a brand whose products I have come to enjoy, appreciate, and trust. From day trips to deep mountain excursions, Eberlestock packs make the journey with me quite often. In this video we look at the Mainframe, which is a modular frame pack that I have had my eyes on for quite some time...and adding the Batwings this pack has just taken the form of load hauling workhorse! We get a field use impression and get the Mainframe into some solid hauling use!

People have forgotten that packframes like this (okay older tech but same idea) and packboards used to be the be all end all of carrying bulky loads for any distance. I am a huge fan of the modular use of them.

It's hard to see a better way to go for heavy loads... Between the frame and the lashing ability... Hard to beat!

I also have the F1 Mainframe, but with the Vapor 7500 instead of the dry bag like you have. I like having the ability to access things from the middle of the pack without needing to go in from the rollup top, as the Vapor 7500 has access from the back, besides the rollup top. If I need things to stay dry, I use heavy mil trash bags. One design flaws with the EMOD zippers. They should have made it where it zips together top to bottom, instead of bottom to top. This would eliminate the need for securing the zipper pull to keep it from unzipping itself.
Also, I'm also subbed to your Outer Limitless 2 channel. Just an FYI. The Eberlestock batwing pouches can easily accommodate a Ruger 10/22 takedown in a Magpul backpacker stock. The batwings can also fit a Ruger PC Carbine in a Magpul backpacker stock, but it's a bit more of a squeeze..

Your right about the zippers. That drives my crazy... There are a couple funny things like that. I haven't figured out why the zippers are the way they are? Maybe some logic to it... Or maybe a flaw... But yes I agree that they would be more effective zip down.

Glad the system is working well for you! The zipper goes up because with how much abuse the bottom of a pack gets (taking it on and off and putting on the ground) having the zipper at the bottom would have worn them 10x faster and "clogged" them up in muddier or dustier environments!

@Eberlestock Yep, that makes sense. Dirt is a zippers worst enemy. Thanks for pointing that out for me. As for the direction of the zippers, It's definitely not a deal breaker for me as I own 6 batwings, a J51 Warhammer, a little brother plus the aforementioned F1 Mainframe with the Vapor 7500.

I own this frame and also the carrier frame by eberlestock. But what I've done is swapped out parts. I combine it with hill people gear. Instead of using the 3 straps that go across is that r not always sturdy for a load lotsa movement often. So I use The hill people gear Aston 3 panel and the hill people gear straps to connect the panel to the frame basically compressing the load in with a hypalon molle very large panel and it just hugs ur whole load to the frame and the straps r so long that u can add additional bags to ur bag and compress it all to the frame. The panel is fully laser cut molle. And the straps r the same brand as the eberlestock buckles. So all fits. I can easily carry a 100 or so liters. I even have straps for the top of the bag so the full load is compressed in on top. And the finishing touch is I use the prairie belt hip belt
from hill people and I use that on the frame instead of the factory eberlestock hip belt. It rides like a dream. I never like the only 3 straps option for this frame it never held my gear right my bag. So I found a perfect to a T replacements. But it is a very comfortable frame!! Thanks for listening!!!

The hill people gear custom like I did made the load sit completely with no movement.

What's the MOLLE panel you used there? Does Eberlestock sell that as well?

Hmm unfortunately I have searched their website and I can't find it. I'm thinking it's no longer sold. Thank you.
