The top four teams in the ACC got NCAA bids that year. Wake Forest and Maryland lost in the 2nd round while North Carolina and Virginia made the Final Four and played each other in the semifinals
Jim Valvano made the comment that "Notre Dame has the emotional edge over Virginia". Said that Notre Dame was the best team they played that season, even though Virginia was #1 and undefeated in February. Notre Dame beat Virginia a week after this game. The NCAA had the rematch all set for the Elite 8, but BYU beat Notre Dame at the buzzer in the Sweet 16
I was a huge terps basketball fan. Joe Smith and Keith Booth drew me to them. Loved Gary Williams. I stopped rooting for them ever since they left. I just can't get up for games against Iowa, Northwestern, etc.
