How to Replace a Moen Shower Faucet Cartridge

- In this video, I'm replacing the faucet cartridge on a Moen single-handle Eva Posi-Temp (R) shower faucet. The replacement cartridge is part 1222 or 1222HD. From the beginning until about 9:45 is the normal faucet cartridge replacement procedure. From 9:47 until the end explains what to do if the shower handle is in the wrong position (up instead of down) when the water is shut off after you've replaced the faucet cartridge.

As a tip for those that can't get these out. The rubber swells over time and can even cause the rubber to break. This is what happened to me (I think) and it made the removal process very difficult with no special tool and just the plastic piece that turns it 1/4 turn. I used WD40 and took my time, eventually, once I had enough of it out. I grabbed big adjustable pliers and grabbed the thick plastic piece instead of the post and started turning it back and forth until it slowly started to give.

Wait, so the old cartridge needed to be quarter turned to come out, but the new one didn't? Is that because you got the HD version?
@Paul: The quarter turn is to loosen / release the old cartridge, because part of that process actually pulls the cartridge forward a bit to make it easier to remove. Inserting the new replacement cartridge is different-it is lubricated and inserts easily and you don’t turn it a quarter turn. Same for HD and for non-HD versions. Hope that helps.
Excellent video! Most I’ve found only show the cartridge replacement procedure which I found to be a lot easier than the posi handle installation and adjustment. I found after installing the HD cartridge that the lever is actually so easy to move that it will slip down to full hot (9 o’clock) from approximately midpoint between 10 & 11 o’clock. Have you had this happen? The plastic cartridge gets harder to turn over time I wonder if that will happen to the HD brass cartridge.
Thanks! I haven’t had that happen (slipping down to full hot at 9 o’clock angle) and I’ve even added lots of extra grease around the cartridge. May be a poor fit between the cartridge and the pipe? I would try removing and reinstalling super carefully to see whether it still happens.
@@LongologoProductions I ordered a second HD cartridge and installed it today. The Moen handle is very heavy and seems to be what caused the first cartridge to slip. The second new HD cartridge valve is just a slight bit tighter, which seems to be enough to keep the handle from slipping on its own. I also had the 180 degrees out of sync on this one-so certainly appreciate you addressing that in the video as well! 💪 👍

What happens if the cartridge breaks inside as you are pulling it out?
Not good! Try needle nose pliers to get the cartridge and pieces out.
Would it be the same process to replace the cartridge for the diversion valve above the faucet?
@Nicolas Arevalo: The parts for the shower flow control lever/valve would be different, so it really depends on the specific lever/valve you have installed. Sorry I can’t be more help.

I cant get the Allen bolt out
First, make sure you have any gunk cleaned out of the bolt head so your Allen wrench can fully grip the bolt head. Second, make sure you have a long enough arm on the Allen wrench to give some leverage. Third, consider putting a drop of liquid wrench behind the bolt head and let it soak in for 30 minutes or so and then try to remove it. I hope that helps.

@@Tendertroll1 : yes. We haven’t had any issues with it. Just replacing the cartridge every few years if the handle gets a little harder to turn. Honestly once it’s installed you kind of just stop thinking about it and it just becomes part of the bathroom….
