  • “Canción Mixteca” (Song from Mixteca) is a traditional Mexican folk song written by Oaxacan composer José López Alavez in 1915.
A song of longing for one’s homeland, many of you would be familiar with the beautiful and haunting version from the brilliant 1984 Wim Wenders movie ‘Paris Texas’, where Ry Cooder resurrected it with Harry Dean Stanton on vocals - a touching rendition that fits in perfectly with the film’s themes of dislocation and aloneness, a feeling many of us have felt at one time or another.
Other renditions are a lot bouncier and optimistic than Cooder’s version. I’ve gone for something in between, sitting a bit closer to the bittersweet feeling of nostalgia than despair.
“And seeing myself so lonely and sad like a leaf in the wind,
I want to cry, I want to die of sorrow”
