- Although complaints about the damage caused by wake boats have arisen across the country, the Willamette River in Oregon has been hit especially hard. Some limits have recently been placed on wakesurfing, wakeboarding, and tubing, but they do not directly address the concerns that wake sports are injuring and killing species of salmon and steelhead listed under the Endangered Species Act and diminishing the and safety and enjoyment of the river by other users. Similarly, it is far from an assured thing that the new rules will be able to protect municipal and private shoreline property from the kinds of damage they experienced prior to their adoption.
Update: In 2022, the Oregon Legislature passed a bill that prohibits wakesurfing on the Newberg Pool section of the river and limits the weight of boats used for wakeboarding and tubing in this stretch of the river.

I was motor sailing in a channel on my 26 i was used to normal wake from speed boats or yachts and some are kind enough to wither move further away or slow down around me but had a wake boat try to throw my sailing vessel towards the sandbar 🤷♂️
I live near and fish on the Sacramento River Delta in north central California. It has similar issues in many areas being too narrow to dissipate waves, lots of boat traffic, competing user groups including paddlers, fishermen, swimmers, etc. I own a 16 foot fishing boat with a 50hp motor. I often take this boat fishing in the ocean, with no issues. A few weeks ago I was headed back to the dock along a channel about 40 yards wide. I had a wake boat ahead of me so I slowed down and then another wake boat came around a bend into the channel behind. I was not sure how to handle this situation and a huge wave crashed over the bow of my boat putting hundreds of gallons of water into my boat. Fortunately the boat if foam filled and it popped out and kept going but I was seriously surprised at the massive waves put out by these boats especially considering how slowly they were traveling.
Lol this guy, if you don’t like the wakes don’t go in the water. I grew up living on the Willamette and was not bothered at all by other with boats that create large wakes. Most peoples docks that are damaged is because they have not been maintained and need maintenance in the first place.
I wouldn't even want to wakeboard on something that full of other boaters. That's crazy.

I live on a dammed river and have a wake boat as well as a paddle board and a kayak. I paddle in the mornings because the wake boats don’t typically hit the water until after 11am. My biggest threat early morning is the fishing boats doing 80mph, but 99% of the time they are very safe and courteous. Afternoons is for the wave crowd of all stripes- wake boats, skiers, tubers, jet skis. What paddler in their right mind wants to be on the water with all that going on? It’s not just the wake boats. As others have mentioned, wake boats aren’t the only boats making a lot of waves. As waterways get busier we will all have to learn how to accommodate different activities and have patience with one another. If you want some piece and quiet, get up earlier before the youngsters hit the water.
That feel when you need a 20 foot ranger walleye boat just to deal with wake boat waves.

It’s just a part of being on the water. If you know you can’t balance yourself on a kayak with a wake then you need an aluminum boat. Figure out how you can be out there safely with a wake. Then it’s no problem.

I believe the obvious solution to eliminating the waves would be draining the River. It would protect the structures and increase shoreline.

That waters of America belong to all of us. I can't stand wake board boats, but I won't ignore the fact they have just as much right to the water as I do. Restrict the whole shit hole to 5mph watch tourism take a dump. I'm glad none of the lakes around me have private shore line docks with Chad and Karen for owners.

The issue is really simple - Wake Boats are the problem. All of you love your form of recreation, we all get that. Unfortunately, that form of recreation that relies on generating artificial "surf" waves impacts everyone else. It isn't an issue of paddlers, but instead homeowners, swimmers, those who fish, paddlers and more. Further ecological harm results from this activity. This is why it is coming up all over the United States. It would be great of the wake boat industry had some real accountability on this. Instead, they spend big money on lobbyists who lie on their behalf, and they themselves lie about the impact of their small slice of the marine industry. That is why these boats will eventually be off of the Willamette River, and many other waterbodies across the US.

Interesting. So it's people surfing, not the 197 boats fishing below the falls that reduce salmon? I mean maybe try not standing on a skinny little board in the water and using a Kayak or canoe? You have the whole entire Tualatin river to yourselves to paddle board.
I've been boating the local lakes in phoenix az for 30 years and I can barely stand these boats. Our lakes are small and you get 4 or 5 of these boats close to each other and now you're in the ocean. By far the most annoying thing out on the lake.
I'm not a kayaker. I have a 22 foot newer bowrider and still get beat to hell by these waves.

While I do find this video to be incredibly bias and filled with partial truths, there are some points worth addressing here:
1. Do wakeboard/wakesurf boats inflict more damage to shoreline and surrounding structures than kayaks and paddle boards? Sure they do. In the Willamette River you have about 3-4 months of real wakesurfing and wakeboarding traffic. Outside of that it’s pretty much a kayaking, paddle boarding and fisherman’s paradise permitting the water quality is safe, which leads me to my next point. Do I believe wakesurf boats are impacting salmon runs and wildlife habitat as much the far too frequent sewage spills and pollution from the surrounding over population? No I do not. As much as 248,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled into the river from Salem, Oregon in December 2020 and this is just one of many times there has been raw sewage spills in to the Willamette through the years.
2. I do find it funny when you put a 1990s Mastercraft in the video, which was actually designed as a ski boat to put out as small of a wake as possible for slalom skiing. When up on plane, this boat will produce no larger wave than any of the fishing boats you showed. Even with the boat wanted down, the wave is 1/10th the size of a “cruiser” getting up on plane. So please make sure you’re educated on the material you’re posting.
3. The “Cruiser” you showed actually falls into the yacht category. When those boats are plowing through the river at any speed within the 10-15 mph range, put out a wave that decimates the wave size any wakesurf/wakeboard boat puts out and its not even close. I was on a lake last weekend, thank goodness far from the pit that has become the greater Portland area and one of your “cruisers” went by and the amount of water it displaced and subsequent rollers it produced were massive. About 5 minutes later another went by and it was the same story. Right now your target is wakesurf boats, next it will be “cruisers.”
4. That word again...privilege. So sick of hearing it these days. I came from blue collar family, worked incredibly hard through school and into my career and have sacrificed years of my life to be able to buy a wakesurf/wakeboard boats. I do agree there are discourteous boaters on the water, there is no doubt reasonable rules and regulations need to be in place to keep everyone safe, however lets be honest with each other here, your goal is to ban the sport altogether. There are also plenty of discourteous paddle boarders. “Discourteous paddle boards,” you ask...”how could it be?” As an example my lake has a jetty with a small inlet for boats to come in and out of the marina. There are several ways for paddle boarders and kayakers to avoid the inlet and yet I have found myself waiting on paddle boarders, sitting down on their boards in the middle of the entrance having a conversation? They look directly at me and continue on with their conversation. Is there no other place this conversation can take place? Perhaps 30-40 yards in either direction?
5. You have every right to your opinion just as I have every right to oppose your close minded viewpoints. Yes, that is right I generally find your side of the fence to be very close minded and shut off to any viewpoint that opposes your own. Why not do an exposé on what’s happening to your precious Portland? Between the homelessness, garbage and graffiti everywhere, especially along the freeway systems (und the overpasses and along on/off ramps), rampant drug abuse, frequent riots that do nothing but create chaos and facilitate property damage and the declining morality of what use to be one of the most desirable places in the country to live? Do a deep examination into the policies and mindsets that have led to this decline, putting your bias aside and see what you come up with?
6. I have no problem with paddle boarders. Paddle away! I have no problem with Kayakers! Get out there and get after it! Fisherman should be more worried about the water quality than wakesurf boats, which do emit exhaust fumes but are a much smaller part of the problem as it relates to the Willamette River.
I’m so tired of the extreme left wing (for the record I have a problem with the extreme right wing mindset as well) that says we have to do it your way or no way at all. We are all different, yet you apply labels to everything you possibly can. As a general rule of thumb I find the left wing portion of your party to be some of the most intolerant individuals I’ve ever been associated with and Portland’s been infested with this parasitic belief system. Leave my wakesurf boat and way of life alone please. It starts with the Willamette but you’ll be coming for my area next I’m sure. Even though there isn’t a signal house or dock along the shorelines of the lake I frequent, I’m sure you’ll find some fossil bed that requires protecting and will require the entire area to be shut down. Again, you have every right to disagree with me, that’s fine. Just the same as I have a right to disagree with you. If you really want people like myself to listen, present real solutions to said problems. Don’t simply attack the character of the wakesurfing industry, which is exactly what you did.
Hey Caleb - Unfortunately, your response kind of signals all that is wrong with the "wake boat" world these days. So let's start with the fact that your "special" craft is designed to do one thing - create artificial wakes upon which to "surf" in inland waters. The average person, upon hearing that, would likely come up with a few questions. For example, "what does it take to surf on inland waters, and why do I need this exceedingly expensive boat?" The basic answer is that, heck, you need a boat that ways many thousands of pounds to create a completely artificial surf wave that is 4ft high or more.
So Caleb, the lake you frequent - is that on or near the Willamette? My guess is the answer is No. So you are likely from elsewhere - maybe Washington? Yet, you pipe in on this issue that is being dealt with on the Willamette. Well heck, just recently this issue came up on the Spokane River as well. See, the deal is that the issue is being addressed all around the United States. These super heavy boats built to help one "surf" on inland waters are causing real problems for a bunch of folks. They: a) destroy private property from shorelines to docks, b) impact other users of our waterways - which are typically far more numerous than wake boat users, and c) the ridiculously large waves actually harm habitat. Here on the Willamette, we do not have naturally occurring 4ft waves.
The deal is - your expensive and specialized form of wreckreation impacts everyone else on a given water way. It is the height of a "special interest" and frankly is problematic on many water ways. Certainly there are some places where it can make sense. The funny thing is that all of the marketing for these $100k plus craft is typically done on large waterbodies - from huge lakes and reservoirs, to large estuaries. Just look at their websites - they are telling. Boats that are NOT like all the others, are towing people around so they can surf. Ugh. It would be far more fun to go to the Coast, and learn to surf.
So, I'd suggest that you refrain from the political bullshit, and actually look at these craft. Why else do some of them now need 3 Axles?? It is almost like the movie Wally. So, I'd suggest that you take a closer look at the issue, and perhaps even read some of the reams of testimony that have been provided recently outlining the issue by hundreds and hundreds of folks. The issue is nationwide, and these boats and this (sport?, avocation?, source of pollution?) will decrease over time.
Some machines just do not make sense in some areas.

I grew up in Castle Rock, Washington and would frequent the Willamette River on weekends quite often. I’m very familiar with your body of water. “Political Bullshit,” lol! Have you not paid attention to what’s happening around the country over the last decade? Everything is political, including your perspective and mine for that matter. It’s hostile, one sided perspectives, such as this video presents, that finally has people such as myself fed up and starting to push back, as your side has a monopoly on almost all forms of media outlets and open forums of communication.
You reference that I have no right commenting about the Willamette, then go on to talk about this being a nationwide issue? You contradict yourself. Are you not familiar with the concept of legal precedent. What happens in Oregon, could unfortunately have considerable impact on where I live. If I shouldn’t worry about what happens on the Willamette, what gives you anymore right to comment about this being a nationwide issue? It’s your narrow minded perspective and self righteous ideology that continues to drive division on matters such as this. You completely ignored the other things I discussed that are damaging the Willamette? Why? Because it doesn’t fit your agenda. As I stated, I am willing to concede these boats can contribute to shoreline erosion amidst other things. But shutting down the whole industry and closing off entire bodies of water isn’t the answer.
Not only have I read the information published across the country but I’ve also had conversations with people this directly impacts. I do agree in responsible boat ownership, education and sharing waterways in a respectful manner. Just like the paddle boarders that wouldn’t let me pass, there are always some bad eggs that ruin it for everyone else. However, as usual your side has presented an all or nothing approach. I’ve watched the situation on the Spokane River quite closely as we also go to Lake Coeur d'Alene.
How much I do or don’t pay for my hobby is none of your business. Just the same as it’s none of my concern what color Prius you choose. The 3 axle trailers are often more for convenience and stability while towing long distance and has less to do with weight. I had a double axle trailer that handled by G23s weight just fine but elected to move forward with a triple axle this time around, as it’s more stable when traveling long distance. However, if you look at most Mastercraft boats through the X24, their flagship wakesurf boat, most of them are sitting on double axle trailers.
I agree there are areas that aren’t ‘safe for wakesurfing and as a result restrictions should be applied. But it still makes me scratch my head a little when you completely ignore all the other issues I mentioned impacting the Willamette River.

You used "expensive" or "100k+" multiple times in your argument. That could not possibly be more frackin irrelevant. There will always be people who want to end the fun. I also Kiteboard and they want to ban that as well. The kites supposedly scare the birds. It’s always something. We have to make a stand and make sure our voices are heard or we no longer will be able to do the sports we love.

starts out with wake boats are the problem,,,ALL boats make wakes, it is the operators whom make their INdIVIDUAL decition to creat what size of wake and then there are the others,,paddlers and small fisshing guys and gals whom put them selves at danger intentionaly so to say (i was just ) (i was Only) The older ones are the worst.
By the way, iam 58 and a wake boat is just a boat, it does have the ability to creat a large wake but does not always creat a large wake.
I am putting security cameras on my boat, & on my dock, so that I can not only charge the surf boaters for damaging the dock, but also for damaging my boat. To any surf boater out their that is intentionally reckless with their boats, be aware, People are starting to do what I am doing, & the courts are not nice to surf boats.

If your boat or dock can’t hold up to a slow moving wake coming from a surf boat surfing, you need to invest some money into upkeep of your property

We don’t need more rules. Common courtesy is important. I own a wake boat and I am very cognizant of others around me. Creating a wake within 20 feet of a kayak or canoe is ridiculous. Those guys are stupid. Anyone who is honest understands that a river is not “flat” surfaced. That’s just a stupid. There is room for everyone. Stop being a Karen and trying to regulate everything to death. Things change and times change.
Unfortunately for wake boats, times are indeed changing. Folks are tired of specially designed craft that are built to create artificial surf waves on inland waters. They create well-documented problems for the environment, and all other waterway users.

Not my problem If you can’t balance on your SUP board, or know how to properly navigate wakes, or keep your docks and property maintained. If I can take a 20ft, low riding surf boat into Lake Erie and handle wakes coming from 60ft yachts, I think anything can handle a slow moving wake coming from a boat surfing
Unfortunately, your attitude about this issue, as well as similar attitudes from others like you, is the very thing that is getting wake boats banned in different places around the U.S. When you have a massive heavy boat, built to create artificial surf waves on inland waters, you inherently have a problem. Impacts to all other users of a given waterway, as well as impacts to the environment have been well documented. That is why all around the U.S. discussions about banning wake boats are happening at the local, county, and State levels. The industry has very little accountability on this issue. They should take more leadership about where they sell their specially designed craft, and provide better recommendations on where they should and should not be used.
@@traviswilliams236 the problem is people do not understand the forces of waves. A slow rolling wakesurf wave creates much less force and damage than a faster wave from boats towing tubers or wakeboarding. On my lake the largest waves that hit the shore with the most force are from boats towing tubers, and that’s any boat, not just wake boats. The speed at which those boats are going and the curving path that they take makes large wakes where the wake converges on the inside of the turns they make.

Pretty ignorant and arrogant take. Try navigating a surf wake created in a narrow lake. In lake erie you have ample room to navigate.
In a small inland lake your only option in a runabout or other like boat is to slow down, or put your passengers at risk of getting injured. Guess what happens when you slow down? Now I’ve created a much larger wake than necessary and compounded the problem. I don’t have these issues going around non wake boats, it’s that simple. An average boat can handle non surf wakes without interrupting momentum.
I’d ask you to get some buddies, take a surf boat and bow rider out to a narrow body of water run about 25-30 mph in the runabout while coming up on a wake boat surfing, oh and put your wife or kid in the bow of the runabout and let everyone know what your experience is. Do that about 5-6 times.
For those of us who don’t wake surf and just want to enjoy a nice ride in the boat with the family, wake boats have become the biggest obstacle and road block to us enjoying what we like.
On a bigger open body of water, not much of an issue, if you know what your doing you can completely avoid the wake. Problem is people put these boats where they’re not practical and it’s impossible to avoid the wake without impacting your day. Hence the frustration from others.
I have 30+ years boating experience, but until recently (during covid to current) boating on a day where there’s an average amount of boats on the lake where I live has become absolutely miserable. Why? The population of wake boats surged when everyone got bored during covid. My advice to you, put yourself in others’ shoes Instead of the cynical not my problem mentality. Fact is, it is your problem because these things weren’t an issue before wake boats became popular.
Oh, and the issue where I live is not “wake energy”. It’s wake height. With wake surfing the average daily wake height is higher. These waves are high enough to get go over sea walls, because the body of water is too narrow to give time for the height to dissipate. When the waves crash over the sea walls the water erodes the ground behind the wall speeding up the degradation of the sea wall.

Be helpful as well as associating monetary value to these damages. In some of these videos it seems as though you were intentionally paddling toward these boats to capture footage for this narration, which is concerning and dangerous. There should be additional studies done here.

Surf waves have far less energy than tubing or wakeboard waves just so you know. Surf waves are lazy , close to the source they are large but they disperse quickly over distance. I'm not sure what the answer is but both surfing and kayaking are fun and both cause damage to the natural ecosystem. There has to be a comorimise.

I've seen wake boat drivers do their activities in river channels that are adjacent to large lakes. People are stupid as hell, inconsiderate, and generally pieces of shit. They think it is funny to blow by fishermen in the shallows of streams while the open lake is clear of any traffic.
Artificial waves, a term used quite often in this video. However, there isn't a water going device that doesnt create some form of an artificial wave. I will agree that a fully ballast wakeboat can make a huge wake, but couldn't disagree more with the terms "unfair or unreasonable." Each water goer is responsible for his or her own wake, the location of said boat in relation to shore/dock/others etc is completely the operators doing. Bowriders, bass boats alike are all credited to doing stupid, unruly and dangerous acts just as much as the wake boat owner. Go ahead, create more rules...if that's the world you want to live in you're on the right path producing biased and misleading information such as this video. Have a great day.
The point here Adam School is that "wake boats" are designed to do one thing - create artificial waves on inland waters. In your mind, they are all the same huh? I'm guessing the promotional videos from Moomba, Ski Nautique and all the rest are just showing us all something else. Sheesh.
@@paddlewest2686 I am absolutely not saying that wakeboats aren't capable of making massive artificial waves. The point I'm making is that without ballast, the wake created is in close proximity of size to many other versions of watercraft. I also clearly state that each boater is responsible for their own wake, running a wakeboat full ballast 75' from shore is irresponsible. Creating a surf wave in the middle of a lake allowing for dissipation is completely acceptable.
Each party is entitled to use the waterways to their own liking, while being safe, courteous and respectful. I own one of these "wake monsters" and am clearly aware of their capabilities, how I choose to be responsible is key. A standard 20'+ Bowrider at 12 mph can throw a tremendous wake as well, different story at plane.
So to end my rant, yes they are all equal and any type of vessel on the water can be hazardous or troublesome behind the wrong captain. We are all sharing the water and ideally being respectful of our fellow boaters.
100% agree with Chris Holland,,, my 2 bits is that it sounds like a upper mucky muck fell off their board, blames the wake boat for their embarrassment. , And mysteriously there is video of things being portrayed, manipulated in a way to that a wake boat can go 60 or 80,,, they are a tug boat- pull tubes and make short tall waves,,, and one other thing about a wave in this video were the old guy falls off a board while paddle boarding ( 2:39) --it was the primary wave from the first boat- the wake boat visible wave had not reached him yet, i blew it up, slowed down the video and plane as day when not manipulated to be a violin episode of being a Karen or Ken--- people show a short video of old couple in England in pathway being shoved by platoon of guards were the husban actually says here they come- you stand here, turns their backs to guards and acts as if they did not know- lets all feel sorry for the old people who CREATED the video !!!
Actually your comments show your bias and possibly ignorance. This is exactly what it looks like outside of our house right in the middle of the Newberg Pool. We have lost many feet off of our bank, old growth timber and have suffered damage to structures and the bio-diversity of our environment. We are stewards of and try and protect the sensitive Greenway that is the right of all. You can take your expensive boats lots of other places, and save our state's treasure.

These types won't be satisfied until all motorized vessels are "banned" from the river ...but of course if it is an electric-powered boat, they'd be gushing all over it, saying just how progressive this is...Up until some future 100 HP electric boat comes along. Deal with it, your poor-ass can't afford the likes of my 18 1/2 foot , 220 HP Reinell?, not my problem. As the same as others writing in here, we grew up plying up & down the Willamette, & we welcome the increased wealth of everyone around as these nice boats indicate. I have no love of these paddle-boats wandering into the center of the river, a menace to navigation...like so much floating debris .

Nah. No snow skiers had any complaints about snowboards. That’s probably because snowboards weren’t wrecking the slopes, making them unusable for the skiers. Or wrecking the landscape. Wake boats are.
Kayak is a problem for the lake so laws needs to be implemented on kayak to not be used for lake only in rivers and bayous.

This is the most bias video production that I've seen yet. I find it hard to believe there is that there is significant damage to all those rocky shoreline sections shown in this video as claimed. Also having a hard time believing that large wake producing boats make as much damage in the 3-4 months of use as the annual heavy turbulence, sediment, and debris that float down the Willamette over the seasons through our PNW storm cycles. I do agree that all water recreational users do need more education so that our public water ways continue to be public. The Towed Watersports Certification is only a 1yr deep and showing promising changes...
Josh - one important distinction for you. When is the water high in the Willamette? Then, think for a second, when do wake boats create their 4ft waves? Do you have some sense that, when the water is lower, there is significant productivity in the Willamette in these nearshore areas? Want to talk about harm to other river users next? Then we can get to damaged docks and "normal" power boats in their slips next.

I have an idea, Privatize the river and allow the free market to determine what can be done where. I don’t understand why we allow the government and bureaucracy to make decisions on subjects they know nothing about. Obviously there is more market demand for wake surfing considering they are willing to pay $100,000+ to do it. If kayakers want to have calm water they need to pay for the opportunity and if the opportunity cost is too high, well I would suggest finding a different water way.
