Lol Bert. You should try wakesurfing yourself! You would make a lot more friends than you will trying to ban it. Wakesurfing is an activity that brings families together, lowers stress, and makes a lot of people happy.

I've been a water sports enthusiast for 70+ years and lived on a 178 acre water frontage property on the Clarence River, Seelands NSW Australia for 16 years. Around 2009 Australia was inundated with a large number of used American made wake boats, the result of the USA/GFC economic downturn and a corresponding wages boom in Australia, due to the FIFO (Fly In Fly Out) mining bonanza. These FIFO workers were know as "Cashed Up Bogans" (young, self centred / newly super rich) and they snapped up these cheap used USA wake boat bargains. Soon our once resiliant waterways were awash with these erosion generating barges, driving traditional waterskiing, fishermen, sailers, rowers, swimmers and kayaker off the river. In 2013 we had a major flood (they happen regually on the east coast of Australia) and for the first time the effects of wake boating "EROSION UNDERCUTTING" was observed. This causes riverbanks to collapse through slumping after the flood receded, due the the undercut AND unsupported weight of the waterlogged river banks. Some waterfrontage landowners in Seelands lost up to 50 x 300 metres of water frontage due to slumping, however our local shire council refused to limit wake boat activities, as they regarded wake boating a significant contributor to the local Water Ski Resort economy. In time community outrage forced the council to engage the University of NSW Hydrology Dept. to conduct a scientific study into the impact wake boats had on the flood resiliance of the Clarence River, hoping it would exonerate the wake boating community and pacify anti wake boating voices. Unfortunately for the council, the commercial and recreational wake boating industry, the scientific research concluded that wake boats were doing irapairarable damage to the Clarence River and an IMMEDIATE BAN on ALL DELIBERATE WAKE MAKING ACTIVITIES should be initiated in reaches of the river where it was subject to riverbank undercutting and "distance-off" restrictions where hard natural or man made barriers minimised wake erosion. These same NSW scientists, together with sientists from the Uni. of Tasmania have gone on to advise the Oregon State Government & Willamette River Keepers of the destruction unregulated wake surfing is having on USA waterways. Footnote 2023-2024: Deliberate wake making activities are still banned on the upper reaches of the Clarence River and NSW Maritime are attempting to widen the "No Slow Tow" ban to other NSW waterways.

very informative. i stay in south africa and these types of boats are extremely rare due to their price point and the low salaries when compared to the USA. in december i took my runabout to a water sports resort and encountered a wake boat for the first time. the wake boat ruined the experience for us.. every time we crossed paths with the wake boat on the river we had to throttle down our boat to the point that it ended our wakeboard run and we needed to restart.. this happened multiple times in the same day. Bert keep on going with these videos and dont listen to those people that insult you, those people only care about one person.. themselves and their own enjoyment.

They (wave / wake boats) are out of control on Lake Anna, Va. Why not let them have the lower 25% of the lake where they have adequate width and depth (remove damaging backwash)? If the stayed on the lower %25 they would have the dam and it's huge riprap on one side, with enormous lake widths on either side with plenty of room for dissipation. But the 200' rule is fantasy. I can site on my dock and observe that easily. My neighbor is staring down $100K in shoreline damage that started just 5 years ago when the newer large boats showed up. He has lived here 45 years with no issues until recently.

I have a wake boat and we surf in 60 to 100 foot of water and stay as far as possible from shore line, docks and other boaters. Not everyone with a tow boat does this but I see more of an issue with tubers like others have said. There are 20 of them to any one person wale surfing. Also some fishing boats with twin engines flying along the shore line. I kayak and paddle board as well as fish and see all sides of the argument so could you please point me to your videos about those other activities and their harm to the shoreline and bottom. I know kayakers have little to no affect but I am sure you have a video about tubers and bass boats? Just curious what is your preferred lake activity?

Hey Jim. You openness is good! I think folks have really focused on wake boats because they have grown in numbers tremendously over the past decade, and with river's like the Willamette, the narrowness of the channel is far different than a big, deep lake, where such activities can occur with much less impact. It seems to us the distance from the shoreline is the biggest issue, and that is something that many larger lakes can accommodate.

Bass Boats aren’t aloud on 50% of the man made lakes in the country because of horse power limits..
The wake boats will be in the same situation but probably worse.. just because drivers are retarded and keep swamping fisherman and the docks.. go out in the middle of the lake and stay away from these places like you said. But that’s not what is happening in my area..
There’s a large group of tournament trails joining together to get the wake boat run off the lakes.. and it will happen if attitudes don’t change with the wake boat drivers..

Sounds like we need more education and enforcement. I am in GA and if you can afford to buy or rent a boat or jet ski they will give you one with no training or questions. To rent you have to say you watched a video but they just take your word for it. I would agree to a boaters license with tests like cars and take the fees from registrations and use it for more enforcement. People would stop bad behaviors if they got a $200 ticket for surfing too close to a shore line or docks. Same for going 65 down a shore line in a bass boat. Or jumping wake on a jet ski and almost hitting a wakeboarder which happened to my son last month. Two guys on a jet ski About took out my son then both fell off the ski and were swimming in open water when I had a talk with them. Maybe it was me in my boat and them in the water that made them so apologetic but they basically said sorry they don’t know what they are doing And it was their first time on a jet ski. I politely yet firmly informed them it was not safe to follow so close to boats towing people. I find many people on the water that seem to not understand basic principles of boating. Just because you can afford a boat does not give you the skills you need to operate them without harming others or the environment. There are you tube channels just dedicated to people not knowing how to launch or load their boat. Unfortunately they do not get any better once they are away from the dock. Then there are those who know and don’t care but a ticket would at least fix that. If there were no tickets on the road people would drive a lot worse.

The problem is that there are certain craft, wake boats, that are specifically built to create artificial waves on inland waters. There is a reason they are being challenged by thousands of people nation-wide. Such waves are not natural to many rivers, lakes, and bays. Unfortunately the industry has ZERO accountability for their craft, and instead resort to literally saying anything to continue the status quo. Large ARTIFICIAL waves impact the environment, other users of our waterways, and private property. We have all seen this a lot over the past few years. Incidentally, there are myriad canoes and kayaks that are not made of plastic. It is tough to have something you like to do be restricted, but some machines just don't make sense in some places. The issue is no different than restricting some machines on Forest Service Land, BLM land, National Park land, State Park land, and County Park land. We'd suggest that, instead of making lame attempts at character assassination of those seeking to place limits on some boats (and the industry's effort at this is unfortunate, and weak), the wake boat industry should take real responsibility and place clear limits on where their recreational craft should safely travel. Now that makes business sense, and passes the sniff test.

This video is about the false information that the wakesurfing industry is disseminating and the work done by independent researchers that demonstrates the contrary. Some of my other videos cover other issues. For example, the "Welcome to the Willamette River" video shows cruisers and other large vessels and how their wakes are considerably smaller and less energetic than those of wake boats. The Newberg Pool study mentioned in the "200 Feet" and other videos compared a v-bottom fishing boat in plowing mode and found that its wake energy was less than half that generated by a wake boat. Note that fishing boats rarely plow because planing is much more efficient. Citizens in over forty states have organized to object to the environmental degradation, property damage, and boating hazards caused by wake sports. They are not going to be quiet.

What about the fact that these lakes are mostly man made. The water is regulated by a damn to lower the water when needed. I'm sure that 200 boats in an area are going to generate just as much if not more than wake boats. On memorial day weekend I go to a lake and sit with the motor off and majority of the boats around are Baja, pontoons, or cruisers and I feel like I'm in the ocean. Erosion is going to happen regardless if we are here or not thats the real form of climate change. There's plenty of other hazards that need addressing before looking at wake boats.

I know in some states like Washington State, there are statutes that make the boat owner responsible for the wake they throw. There are property owners in Puget Sound that have homes located on narrow passages around islands that sued the State of Washington due to the wake problem of a commuter ferry and boats not watching their wakes. The homeowners won their lawsuit and there are buoys marking the no wake zones. We have a home on Puget Sound, but the boats never come close enough to cause problems. We get the bone headed boater every now and then that comes inside the buoy line throwing a big wake but not often. One of these boats caused severe damage to a beached boat and the owner of the offending boat was forced to pay (insurance) for damages. Most of the beach front property in Washington State is private and the property owner's property extends down to the lowest recorded tide, so any property damage is the offending boater's responsibility.
The wake boarders could go elsewhere but there are spots close enough by that people could kayak in places where boats are not allowed. Would that not be a better option for kayakers and paddle boarding? Are people who have homes along the river complaining in numbers large enough to start a class action lawsuit? Seems If the authorities are not patrolling the boat ramps for violators, then what is the point of the law? When the Police in Washington are patrolling the boat ramps, they will not even let you launch if you do not have a Boaters Card (if born before 1958), up to date and proper registration stickers located on the boat and all safety equipment. I have seen them make people take their boats out of the water.

The wakeboard issue is broader then just peoples docks. Wake boats are a general nuisance all around for everyone these boats get within orbit of. It became a problem for the same reason jet-ski's did. Over the years, they go from a few hundred to several thousand of them out on the waterways. People will always find a way to F a good thing up.

I can appreciate the info here and as someone who enjoys wake sport activities can agree that any damage caused by an irresponsible boater should have consequences. However, I find it interesting that wakesurf boats are the only boats of concern. I’ve been on the Willamette and seen 40’ cruisers who make a much larger wake than these boats. In fact, almost every lake or river I boat on has large watercraft that make humongous wakes. But nothing is said in this piece. It leads me to believe there is less concern over fixing a problem than there is attacking one form of boating. Just my 2 cents. Everyone should do better. Not just one group I don’t like.

Why don’t you instead complement the association and maybe encourage further distances. Seems like you just hate wakesurfing which in my opinion is the greatest family summer sport out there done responsibly. Instead I suggest you encourage surfers to avoid shallow lakes and rivers and move out to areas more appropriate. There are lots of them.

    • @traviswilliams236
      @traviswilliams236 2 роки тому +2

Hey Tom - you are getting at something there. The biggest issue is the distance from shorelines - river or lake. 400ft has been recommended by a Peer Reviewed Study from the University of Minnesota. Our whole argument is that there are some places where such boats don't make sense, and smaller water bodies, or relatively narrow rivers (compared to lakes and bays) like the Willamette don't make a lot of sense in regard to other river users, damage to private property and very real impacts to the shoreline and other aspects of river ecology. Get away from shorelines, have some fun, and feel good about wake surfing on big, open waters. To us that makes a lot of sense.

Thank you for your question. The data from the various studies uniformly indicate that wakesurfing wakes contain more energy than wakeboarding wakes, which is to be expected, but the relative percentages vary quite a bit. The variability is probably due to factors such as the length, weight, and speed of the boat as well as its hull design and set-up. The data from the industry-funded study indicate that the wakes 210 feet from the boat in wakeboarding mode had about 69% percent of the energy of the wakes in wakesurfing mode when operated in shallow water and about 73% when operated in deep water. The data from the University of Minnesota study indicate that the wake 200 feet from the larger boat in wakeboarding mode had about 76% of the energy of the boat in wakesurfing mode and that the wake from the smaller boat had about 46% of the energy. The data from the Newberg Pool study indicate that the wakes 200 feet from the boats in wakeboarding mode had about 42% of the energy than when the boats were in wakesurfing mode. So to answer your question, wakeboarding produces wakes that have less energy than the wakes produced from wakesurfing, but the extent to which energy levels are lower seems to depend on how a particular boat is designed, set up, and operated.

The WSIA study you refer to was conducted in 2015, not 2020. The reply you are addressing refers to wake energy, not wake height. The WSIA study, at page 17, notes that “research on these matters indicates that a wave’s energy is a more important indicator [of effects on shorelines] as opposed to its height.” At page 19, the study further states: “While energy is a more rigorous measure of the potential of a wave to affect shorelines, it is a difficult notion to understand compared to, say, the height of a wave.” I understand that some people have trouble with understanding difficult notions, but the universal consensus among the researchers who have studied the waves generated by wake boats is that wave energy is the most relevant parameter. Also, there are several studies that report wake energies, including those conducted by major research universities. Thank you for watching my videos.

Original strategies around NWZ I dont think contemplated the sheer volume of folks driving these boats. Maybe increase the distance to 250? As long as people try to argue for a ban- they will get nowhere. You cant win against the fastest growing segment of the boating industry. But maybe small adjustments could be made to give a little more protection to docks and personal property. @@jasonshafferman7311 Hi Jason. The best data comes from McFarlane in Australia. They have been looking at wakes for 30 years. It is true wake boats produce large wakes at the boat but they have comprehensive data that shows at 200-300 feet the wave energy (which is what counts in errosion) is significantly attenuated. Two good references are: Zabawa C, Ostrom C. 1980. Final report on the role of boat
wakes in shore erosion in Anne Arundel County,
      Maryland. Maryland: Tidewater Administration,
Maryland Department of Natural Resources. They studies 5 sites over 2 years and wake energy from boats ~5-10% of wind, except when boats were < 200 feet from shore and then only 20%
      .
The other relevant reference is 15 Knutson PL, Allen HH, Webb JW. 1990. Guidelines for vegetative erosion control on wave-impacted coastal dredged material sites. Technical Report D 90-13. Vicksburg (MS): Army Engineer Waterway Experiment Station, Environmental Laboratory. Which found "“wind-generated waves were 10 times more frequent than were boat-generated waves. Boat waves are probably responsible for less than 5 percent of the wave energy impacting this site”.
St Anthony Falls lab in MN, is often cited by those arguing against wake boats despite the fact their wave energy calculations are 2-8 X those others calculate for the same size waves. That lab did another study about wind and state "“Shoreline Erosion is driven mainly by
      wind-generated wave energy”
      I hope this helps.
I have a rebutal to all the nonsense that is out there with more detail but it is too lengthy to post as a comment. I don't know how to get it you.

@@bertkrages3999 I have read MI DNR study. They cite seriously flawed studies. For example, their first two cited references from WEC calculate wave energies that are 40 X off. They have values of 17,621 ft-lb/ft. at 100 feet. That is ridiculous. McFarlane and others show it is

It's not just "some" person doing their thing. It's thousands of people doing their thing. Just on our lake in the summer on a Saturday you'll see 3 dozen wake boats just "doing their thing". It has really screwed up the lake shore.
On top of this they ALL are blaring 1000w sound systems that you can hear a mile away. Hey you love country music, that's great. But I don't want it blasted at obnoxious levels.
Then they the "beach" crowd. You know the ones that come in and anchor off or on shore and crank the music to 11. It's not just one boat, we've seen 6-10 doing this and they are all blasting different music. They trash the place and go full KAREN if anything is said to them.

There's nothing wrong with going for a boat ride or towing. BUT wake boats are specifically designed to generate huge wakes. That's not cool or responsible boating. Not when it's destroying lakes and rivers along with property like other watercraft and docks. Boats designed specifically for generating a large wake should at the very least impose a 600 foot from shore 40 foot depth minimum on wake boats. This way you can do your thing somewhat responsibly.
