There's another interpretation: Pence didn't trust the secret service after what Trump had said that day.
My thoughts exactly!!!
People are still desperately trying to play this down and keep it all within the realms of "a polite coup" even though we know there were assassination plots, explosives planted, gallows erected and far-right terror groups openly planning to transport weapons across the river.
Even now, after everything we know, people are still dancing around the obvious brutality of it all. Chris just alludes to the notion that the Secret Service was heavily involved in a coup attempt and they were just going to "move Pence out of the way".
Some of us understand that it was vastly more violent than this. They weren't planning to "move" Pence, they were planning to "remove" Pence entirely.
Most likely He knew Trump's plan before Jan 6th .

How odd that all of the secret service communications were deleted in such a way that we cannot know what they were actually doing.
I don't know that story, but assuming it's true it makes sense. That was an extreme event and probably triggered some extreme protocols that are best kept secret so that they can be used effectively again.
It's not called the _secret_ service for nothing.
And quite convenient for the Secret Service agents involved. And we still don't know what the agents involved testified to... CYA to the extreme.

The goal was to prevent the electoral votes from being counted as required by the Constitution. Removing the vice president to an "undisclosed location" for "his own protection" and keeping him there for an extensive period would accomplish that.

Pence must know what they were planning to do, meaning that he was aware of the plan to illegally overturn the election results.
By remaining silent on the matter (and not giving over what he knows or has of their plans to the Committee) Pence is being, in effect, an accomplice to the crime.
He may have done the correct thing on that fateful day. But let's not forget that he has since done nothing to stop the Big Lie from being spread. In fact he's publicly spoken about trying to re-establish a connection with Trump.
No - It's clear to me that Pence is still guilty of being an accomplice. In fact the longer he remains silent and does not speak out against Trump and his co-conspirators, the less respect he deserves from anyone. Because what he's doing now is shielding Trump and the others.

The House of Representatives have to approve the ballots of the presidential election so by attacking the capital that would in Trumps eyes stop the counting of the ballots and he would stay in office. This was most definitely an attempted overthrow of the now-certified outcome of the election by the then-Commander in Chief of the US military. That fits the definition of a coup.. whether he used all of the weapons at his disposal or not.

My first thought, when I heard what Pence said,about not leaving: was that he didn't trust them and was afraid they would take him,God knows where Pence used commonsense, because he knew what they were planning and refusing to play their game, he knew that they were ready and willing to make him disappear.He knew who they were, what they were planning and the length they were willing to go to keep the orange man in power. This reminds me of the BBC version of Robert Graves's "Claudius" in the episode where Caligula's assassination makes Claudius his successor as Emperor. When the Senate seems to object, he tells them it wasn't his idea, complain to the armed men behind him, the Praetorian Guard.
In this instance Pence seems to have understood where his loyalty properly lay.
Except that Caligula was dead, and it seems the boss of the Secret Service guard may have been a supporter of the Traitor Trump.

I have never held Pence in very high regard - but it turns out that his actions of standing up for what was right (according to the Constitution) played a critical role in upholding our Democracy. Regardless of other differences of opinion and political perspective - Thank you Mike Pence.

I was going to voice this exact sentiment. Thank you, Steven. As a liberal in a state adjoining Indiana, I was aware of Mike Pence long before he became VP. He persecuted the LGBTQ community in his state, pushed for religion where it did not belong. Thankfully, when it came to upholding the US Constitution and his oath of office against the bullying of the Trumpists, Mr. Pence deserves full credit for following the law and protecting our democratic form of government.

I know there's a deadline on counting them, don't recall what it is or what happens then, maybe goes to House of Representatives, which is what Trump wanted bc Repubs have majority there. I'm not surprised some people think, or maybe Pence did, too, that his life was in danger if he let SS take him away from the Capitol.
I have NO love for former VP Pence. That said I respect him greatly for upholding the Constitution and our "rule of law". He did the right thing and should be commended.

Ok...I do not like Pence for many reasons however I will certainly applaud the fact that he chose to do the right thing under immense pressure. He chose country over party...which is exactly what a public servant should do without thinking twice about it. I still don't want him as president....ever...just sayin.

I agree. Oddly, having a moment of respect for those you normally stand opposite from is somewhat refreshing, and provides the feeling that its possible for us to be united again. He couldve remained in power if he just played ball. All their supporters would love him, his wealth and status would surely increase, but he chose to forego all that for the sake of our democracy. I havent been able to despise Pence since then. He made the most important choice of his life, and it was the correct one - despite the fallout he'd take from his own supporters. I'll never vote for him, but this surely bought him some respect.

It occurred to me that he might have feared for his life, not just a flight to Alaska.
Mike Pence did the right thing. He protected democracy. He is not the one facing prison time. I have more respect for him than Donald J Trump. He is too dangerous to bring him back ever again. He showed his true colors on 1/6/2021.

I think they were just trying to protect him. Their job isn’t to fight threats, it’s to remove the diplomat from the dangerous situation. Getting him out of there actually makes a lot of sense given there were hundreds of trespassers in the building. Whatever, it worked out.

Watching the real videos and watching the under oath testimonies in the January 6 committee hearings has shown that was a violent Insurrection. That took great courage to stand his grounds, and all the others, too. I will NOT vote trump again.

I remember reading that he did not know who was driving the car. He did not trust he was not being kidnapped. That makes more sense to me.

Two things can be true at the same time. He did not want anyone seeing his motorcade leaving, as that shows weakness- as though the rioters won. And he was fearful and didn't trust his security, or what may happen to all of them if they left.
I personally think the driver story is a fabrication.
Pence was smart enough to see what was happening, and knew what it would look like had he left, and completed his constitutional duty.

Quite possibly. But I suspect that gallows would not have been up to doing the job. If this is the opinion of the authorities, then the act of bringing it along does not constitute a real threat, merely a symbolic one, which is protected speech under the First Amendment.
