No matter how deceitful or despicable or 'trashy' she may be, IMHO, YoSaffBridge is one of the most - 'fun' - returning characters in any series. Also, this return encounter with 'Saffron' proves Mal is NOT going to be duped by anyone more than once under any circumstances! (...and, I believe Inara took a special bit of joy in tricking the woman who offered to 'wash Mal's feet,' don't you?) I SO enjoy this episode!

She's also an EXCEPTIONALLY well-written sociopath (to use an admittedly outdated and stigmatizing term, I just can't think of a better broad rough term for the archetype her character captures). I love the layers we get from the details about her. She never says an "I am" about any true identity-type quality, just used a "my name is" early on, which is _very_ connotatively different. Her "Everybody plays each other. That's all anybody ever does. We play parts." combined with her later discussion of not knowing who or what she really is, in her truly naked moment ... It's just such insightful writing into the behaviors and confusion of people with fundamental deep personality disorder issues. Not all people with disorders end up being harmful to others, but YoSafBridge gives us an amazing window into (some possible) desperate and insecure processes of (some of) those who do. And Christina plays her _brilliantly._

The punch Mal gives Saffron at the end of Our Mrs Reynolds, is well timed with her hesitation. The moment he sees her hesitate to think about giving a name, his decision is made. Hence his follow up line that she would have only lied to him any how, because he caught that little hesitation and saw the gears in her mind a turnin'. Christina Hendricks did so well in this role I had hoped she would be a regularly appearing character. Too bad there was only one season, and by the time they did the movie I think she had gotten to big to be afforded even if they wrote her in.

I think a slightly different aspect on Wash's ultimate understanding of the relationship between Mal and Zoe is that he saw first-hand what a powerful leader Mal really is. I assume they all have some understanding of that, or they wouldn't be on the ship. But for him to really be in the forge (to use your metaphor) with Mal and see his strength, his resolve, and his incredible concern for his crew. I think Wash got to see "the real Mal" and understood why Zoe is so committed to him.

I absolutely agree about Trash being a frothy, fun, episode. In yet another element of tragedy to Firefly's untimely cancellation, at this stage Badger, YoSaffBridge, Niska, and Dobson (yes, shot in the ear and tossed to the ground in the pilot episode - Dobson) were all slated to be returning guests, which is why we don't see the true demise of any of these villains so early in the (assumed 5/6 season) show.

I have posted often, that, this being the intended first season of several, any of the guest stars who wasn't dead could have been a recurring character. If this week we go back to Persephony- Badger, Atherton and Sir Warrick live just over the hill. We could easily run into any of them, or not. Joss was too good , too experienced, a producer to close out the option of bringing back any guest who turned out to be popular.

I do like the differences in reaction with Kaylee and Mal from Out of Gas and this episode.
First time they meet, Serenity can't leave the ground and Mal finds Bester and Kaylee in the buff in the engine room and she has no bashfulness while Mal is quick to avert his eyes until she is dressed. In this episode, it is Zoe and Wash who can't look him in the eye while he is not bashful in the full monty and Kaylee takes the view in stride. Even Inara had a reaction.
I feel that if you did a personality trait Venn diagram with Inara, Zoe,and River, you would find the overlap to be Kaylee.

By this point in the production Nathan and Jewell had gotten to pranking each other and trying to make each other laugh while delivering dialog. When Mal walks back onto the ship in the end, Nathan had to wear a sock sort of thing during filming. He had attached a cutout photo of Jewell's face on the end of the sock for this shot so so surprise the awkward looks.

I agree, I like the Safron episodes. However if there is a re-boot of the series, I would think Safron could be played by Molly C Quinn quite well... • @isaackellogg3493
      @isaackellogg3493 2 роки тому

@@Sillydogification I wholeheartedly agree. However, if they manage to get Nathan Fillion back as Mal, and then have Molly Quinn as Saffron, it would be weird. Jeff Daniels and Anna Paquin played father and daughter in Fly Away Home, but then played romantically involved characters in The Squid and The Whale. Anna reported that she felt weird with the new dynamic, even though she was not actually related to Jeff, and they were now both nine years older. This weirdness could easily map onto the Nathan-Molly dynamic, alienating Castle fans and damaging the Nu-Firefly popularity.

My favorite thing about this episode is the vibe check Mal and Duran (Durham? Dirham? I just realized I've never remembered this spelling lol) have during their brief interaction. Both are aware that circumstances in life are complex, and both can readily sense that the other is a decent guy regardless of whatever's happening right now (love how immediately Mal can't help but defend his decency around a new acquaintance he's robbing lol), and both are very astutely aware that they're dealing with an absolutely INSANE woman, one whom they need to handle very carefully. They just have such phenomenal palpable bro chemistry in that whole scene. It's amazing 😂
I have a personal headcanon that the reason Mal doesn't get chased down by Feds later (after all, we can be sure YoSafBridge spilled all about the crew) is because Duran, upon handing her to the cops, told them she was alone and to disregard anything else she says, as an honorable move to watch a bro's back thanks to the common-enemy effect. 😝

I have tremendous respect for Dwier Brown, the actor who played Haymer. He also played Ray's father in Field of Dreams, the Kevin Costner baseball movie. Haymer may be the genocidal creep that YoSaffBrig says he is, but he has a moment of unguarded vulnerability, which makes us like him. Of course, it's a short moment- he hits the Panic Button seconds later, which proves he's still very smart...

In "Our Mrs. Reynolds", Mal didn't want to kill Saffron, or leave her tied up. That would be cruel. There were no authorities to take her. She was too dangerous for Mal to turn his back on her. When he asked her for her real name, he could see she was scheming to come up with a best advantage situation, so it was the right time to just knock her out and take his shuttle back.
In this episode "Trash", Inara rubs it in to Saffron that some of the crew's performances might have given away their plan had Saffron been more observant. If we go back to the scene when Wash yells "What's she doing on this ship?" we can see Kaylee giggling which does pretty much give it away that Kaylee somehow knew already.

I like that a range of relationships can be depicted.Though Wash was right last episode that she needed to be honest with him. She can act in synch with the Captain but still be open about her thoughts and feelings. He was wrong about the jealousy and obviously venting pent up aggression but it wouldn't have been an issue if Zoe had thought to shoot straight with Wash. Love your reactions and commentary... half of the reactors out there, I actually end up skipping through their analysis and random chat, but you're perceptive, smart, and funny. Not trying to be a stan, just wanting to give you that positive feedback, I'm a liker/commenter/subscriber now for your algorithm; looking forward to the rest of the series and checking out your other shows.
Also: it's okay to not like Jayne. I like him but I too wouldn't trust him as far as I can throw him (which wouldn't be very far, if Book's comments are to be believed)

What was interesting is that Mal had sneaked YoSaffBridge aboard without yet buying into her plan. Surely he couldn't have kept her in the crate for long.
Zoey owed YoSaffBridge a sucker punch for YoSaffBridge having hurt her baby Wash.

Mal punched her because he could see she was cooking up another lie.
He asked for her real name. But she hesitated and looked away. He saw her trying to read him, figure out what would be the perfect woman's name he'd feel a connection to. In other words, she was about to try and manipulate him, *yet again.* And so, right then and there, she *earned* that punch. Knocking her out was pretty much the only way he could prevent her trying to twist him around her little finger. After which, he says "You'd have only lied anyway..."

I don't believe everyone should like any character. We all have our likes and dislikes. I love every member of the crew even Jayne. I also love Badger and Saffron, so where does that put me. I believe Jayne had the potential for an interesting arc, if the show continued.

I think Mal hit her at the end of Our Mrs Reynolds because he didnt trust turning his back on her.
He had to knock her out in order to get back to the shuttle.

He wouldn't have shot her if she wasn't armed(and ain't fool enough to arm her.

A couple of things.....First Inara's dress. How a companion dresses is part of their identity. They ALWAYS look good. It adds to their mystique. Instead of them being thought of as "dirty" because they are prostitutes, they are seen as refined and classy. A status symbol. They are charming, seductive, and educated. Second thing....just for reference, these are humans(mostly american and Chinese) that LEFT earth(probably because it became uninhabitable) they colonized a star CLUSTER. Multiple stars in close proximity. "Dozens of planets and hundreds of moons." The "core" planets are the rich and industrialized alliance worlds, while the planets and moons outside of that area are more "wild west."

Anna, "Trust is a big theme is show." Yes it is. Jayne and Simon have come full circle now. From the beginning Jayne didn't consider Simon part of the "crew." And ultimately that fact has driven Jayne to betray Simon and River to the Alliance. It has taken Jayne to being 10 seconds away from Mal flushing him out of the air lock. And now it has taken Jayne to where he is helpless and at the mercy of Simon.
Simon has every reason to kill Jayne right here and right now. Jayne's betrayal almost made meaningless all of Simon's sacrifices and struggles to keep River safe. But for Jayne's plan on Ariel falling apart, Simon would be dead or in prison and River would once again be suffering torturous experiments at the hands of the Alliance. Simon could murder Jayne right on that table and not Mal nor anyone else on the crew with the possible exception of Shepard would not believe him justified.
Jayne and Saffron have a lot in common. They have a similar moral code and neither are trustworthy. And once again Saffron's plans are undone because she is alone while Mal has a crew that trust one another, except for Jayne. Now Jayne lies helpless and in mortal jeopardy. When he calls out for help from the _crew_ there is nobody there. Like Saffron, Jayne is alone and undone.
But Jayne is not alone for despite what Jayne believes, Simon and River have become part of the _crew._ Simon recognizes this despite what Jayne has done. And if they can't trust each other then as Simon says, "I don't see this working any other way." So, Simon forgives Jayne. And in doing so he provides Jayne a path to redemption. So, yes. Trust is a big theme in this show. And Simon and Jayne have come full circle. The question now is, will Jayne take the lesson to heart?
It is my belief that in later seasons, Simon and Jayne would become best friends. They would be like the _Odd Couple._ Or better yet, River would fall in love with Jayne to the chagrin of Simon. Sadly we will never know.

@@StevesFunhouse Mal has Inara, Wash has Zoe, Simon has Kaylee and River has Jayne. It has a certain symmetry to it. Besides River could be the perfect match for Jayne. Something tells me she could keep him on the straight and narrow.

    • @StevesFunhouse

@@robertanderson6929 ... and on that note, everyone just gave a black stare ... and then, turned and walked away. There is symmetry in hand cuffs ... but I don't see anyone lining up, wanting to to be fitted.
The only symmetry you see is a man and a woman. However, they are completely different from each other and definitely aren't compatible. They wouldn't be good for each other at all.
Jayne is a womanizer and River is ... well, River is a mess ... peculiar at times, and the rest of the time, a complete mess and unable to have a normal relationship with anyone . Her brain has been worked on ... fiddled with, and she will likely NEVER be totally okay and, oh yeah ... she HAS cut Jayne before, or did you forget that ???
Whatever dream world you thought that up in, just let it go, cause that was a nightmare you were having. I actually like Jayne ... a LOT, but I would NOT pair him up with River in any way, shape or form, or at any time. Whatever "something" it was that told you that River could keep Jayne on the straight and narrow, is sadistic. That would actually be a match made in Hell.
Edit: I was the culmination of a situation where, being a roadie, the band picked up a number of girls, and let's just say, if the last "untaken" girl wasn't going home with someone, the band wasn't going home with someone. So, I took a hit for the team, and that was the worst date I've ever had. It was disgusting, and I will never forget it.
      Don't do it !!!

regarding this wonderfully silly assertion about a 'Jayne & River' connection... is truly silly to almost everyone of the FF fans... BUT, as it turns out... the two were connected! years later, only as Colonial John Casey and "Greta" (an alias).... and they had much the same father-figure-always-teasing-daughter relationship on the series; Chuck, that they had on set of FF. It was said that the entire cast of FF had relentlessly teased Summer Glau during shooting on FF, but none more than Adam Baldwin, and Adam lovingly returned to the same habit when Summer guest starred on Chuck! So the two did have a connection... of sorts!

You really MUST watch the film Serenity after the TV episodes. Think of it as 3 or more episodes all wrapped in one towel. There is a major Easter egg in the film. Can't talk about it until you watch the film. See.... nothing like extra incentive. Right??

Perfectly consistent. When two people react like that to each other's presence, you KNOW they've interacted before. Names don't come into it.
And had he told YoSaffBridge about his friend Mal's namel, then she wouldn't have been taken by surprise, would she? She'd have been ready for the encounter, to make sure she had the upper hand.

He pondered that they must have met.
      Mal confirmed that they had.
      Yosafbridge said he was lying.
Calling him Mal, confirmed that they had and that Mal was not lying and that she was. His first thought was right, proven right and she was proven unable to support her lie.
      A more current example:
      "You called * * a traitor didn't you"
      "I never said that"
      "Let's go to exibit A"
      "Oh wait now I remember"
Catching her in a lie, was not inconsistent with the accusing attorney's statement by preventing her from lying.
