Dave Allen was a fantastic comedian with the perfect sense of timing. His "Telling your child how to tell time", or his "aeroplanes", or his religious jokes compilations are epic.

Having been born and bred as a Londoner I love Micky Flanagan and as my Mum was Scottish I also love Kevin Bridges and can understand both. I then moved to Australia and luckily their sense of humour is very British.

Stewart Francis is another popular Canadian comedian who has worked a lot in the UK. I think he has given up doing standup now, but there are lots of recordings of his acts. He does snappy one-liner jokes.

If you're after a classic Scottish comedian then Billy Connolly is your man. Possibly the greatest UK comedian ever.

Billy Connolly is the one I grew up with and still the best, but there are so many good ones these days.
one of the funniest Jimmy Carr game shows was "I literally just told you" the second episode of which the contestents were so bad at remembering things Jimmy nearly has a breakdown its really worth a watch (the premiss of the show is that apart from the starter rounds most of the questions are about anything that happens during the show as written by question writers on a panel.

If you're wondering about other comedians then for sure I can suggest Lee Evans. It's impossible to choose any absolute favourites, but check out "Talking About The Wife | Lee Evans", and "Flying Economy Is A Grueling Experience | Lee Evans".

My favourite British comedian is probably Lee Evans. So brilliant, active, so physical, so talented, great singer. Real shame he retired but fair play for being happy with life with his family
Jimmy occasionally throws in a joke that takes 1 or 2 minutes to set up, but it's usually the rapid fire one liners.
As an Aussie I get British humour more than other countries humour, we have a similar style here, maybe a little rougher. I've never been offended by comedy, not even the terribly "inappropriate". As for people walking out, I've seen a few clips, maybe 1-2 actually left and Jimmy acknowledged them doing so.

I'm with you on James Acaster - his Repertoire set is my favourite of all time! After that, for just stand-up; Ricky Gervais, Kevin Bridges, Frankie Boyle, Dara O'Briain (very underrated - highly recommend) and Peter Kay. For American comedians, I'd have to say George Carlin and Dave Chappelle 😄

My throat hurts from laughing. Even though it's somewhat impolite, the context switches, surprises, twists and turns are so... unexpected, and funny.
Dave Allen (I had to watch re-runs as I was only a nipper when his original TV series were on). As a teenager I was introduced to the classics by Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor, so maybe I've been lucky generation-wise.
Growing up there were plenty of British comedians who were trying to emulate their sort of humour, but they were always unbroadcastable until they released their shows on VHS/DVD. Which ended up with a glut of them on the DVD shelves around Xmas time.
There's also Viz magazine which has been going around for 35+ years. All in all, far too many to choose from. Their Profanisaurus is a good book to acquire (no longer updated). I've bought and donated a few copies to friends of mine in Germany over the years :)
For me Sarah Millican is a must, one of my favourite comedians

Al Murray, "Global finance", it's the funniest thing I've ever seen and it has so many cultural references, not just British one's.
I went to see Jimmy Carr a month ago and it was one of the best stand up shows I've been to. I've run comedy clubs in the past so I've seen a lot of comedians! Yes he can be close to the bone but they are JOKES, but that's made obvious and they always come from a good place.
Nobody walked out of this show. And I've never seen anybody better than him when talking with the audience - he actually ENCOURAGED heckles and I've barely seen anyone respond with better off the cuff one liners than him. Seriously, go and see him
Loved this, British comedy is so rich and diverse. For me it's one of our best attributes - that deprecating humour, our ability to look at ourselves and make fun. So many classic British comendy series as well. Definately recommend an Audiance with Billy Connolly, 1985.
I've been to his shows three times and never seen anyone leave.
Even in the early years everyone knew what you were paying to see.

Five minutes of Jimmy Carr is enough for me. Frankie Boyle adds more to the same formula and takes it new places. Eddie Izzard was great in his prime, a Stewart Lee show is a whole comedic adventure, Sara Pascoe and James Acaster for their wit and charm, and Lucy Beaumont for sheer open-hearted daftness. Going back a bit French and Saunders, Dame Edna and the late great Victoria Wood.

My favourite Jimmy Carr joke was actually on 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown. Talking to Suzie Dent, who is a learned etymoligist, respected and respectable, "So, Suzie, what have you been looking into this week? Other than gloryholes?"
Helped by the way it made Joe Wilkinson insensible for a good couple of minutes.
According to Rachel Riley, away from the camera, Suzie Dent is quite a different person. Much more fun and wild than her screen persona.
Gary Delaney operates in a similar vein,the subversion of expectations no matter how controversial the subject. For pathos,Johnny Vegas reciting a poem written for John Cooper Clark’s,(notable British punk poet) judgement during an episode of 8 out of 10 cats does countdown. Johnny,whose stage persona was an aggressive drunkard,took the brief seriously and can up with real heartfelt poetry. Amazing.

I've been fortunate enough to watch a few stand-ups live, and my favourite was Rhod Gilbert by an absolute country mile. His "Book of John" show was hilarious but also heartbreaking, touching and poignant.
I work at a comedy venue and we've had Jimmy Carr several times. I can tell you that not that many people walk out. Tickets are expensive and if you're going to pay a lot of money for something, then you will almost certainly know what you're going to get. Maybe 4 people in a thousand will walk out, but that's pretty much the same as with many other comedians. And, yes, pretty much all his set is the same type of material!
You didn't even get one of his most offensive ones: “If only Africa had more mosquito nets, then every year we could save millions of mosquitoes from dying needlessly of AIDS”.

Carr is quite ruthless with hecklers. Maybe try one of those?

If you think these jokes are extreme and require a reaction video, watch Jimmy Carr's holocaust jokes, which he overtly states at his gigs are experiments to see how far a performer and audience can jointly go. Then definitely do Frankie Boyle next. Some of his jokes are pretty harsh. Or the Australian, Jim Jeffries, who occasionally pushes it even harder.
Going to a Jimmy Carr gig & then getting offended is like going to a Black Sabbath gig & walking out because you don't like rock music.
Try Frankie Boyle "Audience Annihilation". It's split into 2 parts but I have no idea why. It's not so long that you can't play both together.
If you're looking for more wholesome comedy, Tim Vine is a master of puns and very silly. For more comedy of this type, Frankie Boyle rinsing his audience is pretty brutal. And, for well crafted wit and a fairly unique take on life, Al Murray (in his character of The Pub Landlord) is a fun journey.
I think Jimmy Carr's a genius. My friend and his wife walked out of one of his concerts. It's horses for courses...

Jimmy is the Jesus Christ of comedy. They both got hammered with tacks.
Jimmy makes it very clear these are jokes, and he is also interested in finding out exactly how far the audience will go, telling them that’s what he is going to do and it’s set up in a way that he isn’t challenging the audience, but everyone who goes understands this is going to happen. He wrote a great book about comedy btw, which isn’t funny, but does have a joke on the bottom of each page
Seen Jimmy several times live, he’s brilliant. Had a chance to meet him after the shows too and he’s actually a lovely bloke.

I've seen Jimmy live, and he was hilarious. At the meet n greet after the show, he was very nice and humble. It's just a persona on stage.

I think my favourite most memorable comedy watch has to be Lee Evans XL Tour. I watched that DVD so many times haha! He's so funny and just gets absolutely drenched in his own sweat XD
Some Funny British TV shows that I recommend reacting to, include Phoenix nights, Harry and Paul, Little Britain and Horrible Histories. That last one was ordinally an educational sketch show aimed at kids, but was widely watch by adults, because of how funny it was. Horrible Histories has won many awards for best comedy, which is insane considering it was competing with well know shows and was restricted by being historically accurate and needing to be child friendly.
My favourite Jimmy Carr video is called “Improvised Comedy”, I remember crying with laughter the first time I saw it.

My real intro to uk comedy was ray peacock and young ed gamble interviewing Edinburgh comedy comedians. Was called the peacock and gamble show
As you rightly say, humour is specific to the individual, Morecambe and Wise will always be up there. Richard Osman said it best. If you are on TV, you have gone to their house, behave but if you are doing a show, they have come to you and the rules are relaxed (well paraphrasing anyway) A good example would be Jim Davidson. on TV, say Big Break, he was very family orientated but I watched a video of his live show, well about 5-10 mins and switched off.

Most of my Brit comedian familiarity comes from Catsdown and Taskmaster. I also didn't realize 8OO10C was its own show at first.

Me - Mickey Flanagan. Love that cockney wiseguy. But I have to agree with Jimmy - he is brutal, but offence is in the ear of the listener.
Jimmy Carr is very much about one-liners which usually isn't my thing. I prefer the story-telling format, generally.
Joe Wilkinson cracks me up, Joe Lycett, Tim Key, Katherine Ryan... usual suspects really.
A lot of people hate him, but I also think Jack Whitehall is a very funny man.
And just as a general thing; Taskmaster is my favourite show and I basically love 95% of the contestants.
If you go to a Jimmy Carr gig and not get slightly offended you'll probably want your money back. James acaster is definitely a favourite but the best stand up show I have been to was Milton Jones. Dave gorman is an interesting one as he jokes about the most mundane things but goes so in depth (complete with PowerPoint presentations) there surprisingly funny. He used to have a show called modern life is goodish which was essentially just that

Frankie Boyle is brilliant, used to write jokes for Jimmy, not sure if he still does but you'll love him. Might take a bit to understand his Glaswegian accent.
