I have a created a new version of this video (which also includes versions of turrets, and personality cores), check it out! :D ua-cam.com/video/FbQ4Lk0_Rro/v-deo.html
GLaDOS with arms is a really scary concept. seeing how she is conveying emotions, how she's pretending to "choke" on the neurotoxin is unsettling. but then the fact that she was once a woman that was forcefully put into a robotic body would make it way more terrifying. same thing goes for carcass GLaDOS, seeing her so broken and without that gigantic shell around with all the wires around her feels almost illegal
Everyone talking about concept, carcass, or armed GLaDoS, but I'm just thinking it feels wrong seeing her in a Lego game yet there STILL is no Lego Portal set.
Here's a fun fact: The GLaDOS with arms concept wasn't actually about giving her arms, it was about using them. Those arms are actually part of her Portal 1 model, but most people don't think of them as arms (or even notice them) since she only has 1 animation in that game. They then just removed them in her Portal 2 model, presumably replacing them with the claws she's seen using that just come from the ceiling (and seem to be part of the facility instead of her)
I never knew they were planning on giving her arms! Those animations were super unsettling and I wish I could see them in the final product, but at the same time I'm happy they changed it for a more subtle imagery with the two main wired instead
There's also the unused version that involves her being a cluster of relatively small spheres. A truly bizarre version of her and understandably went unused.
1 - it was combine mines as a placeholder 2 - It was just a placeholder. From what I understand they didn't fully agreed on glados design so they just placed a bunch of combine mines instead of her. It was early version of glados fight
Wasn’t that in something like an early access or demo for the game or something on a different game engine that was made separately but by the same people?
Portal 1 glados appears small and not really that menacing, while it is kind of scary to see the huge machine, it’s kind of underwhelming to see just how small the visual part of GLaDOS actually is. In portal 2, GLaDOS is shown to be much bigger and because of the head design being much bigger and more realistic, it’s much more intimidating to be even in the same room as GLaDOS.
The dev commentary says she’s so small because the large machinery displays her power while the smaller, rounder shapes of the chassis represent her feminity
I don't know. I always liked the clumsy inelegance of the Portal 1 version of GLaDOS. The Portal 2 version is so dynamic and expressive... so much so that it almost seems human, whereas the Portal 1 version flails and dangles aimlessly like some kind of... growth, or tumor... just sort of oozing limply from the ceiling. It can't move very much, it can't even look at the player, it's a mess of tangled wires, the extra cores like bulging pustules plastered to its chassis. There's something cathartic about seeing how stiff, constricted, and unnatural your menacing overlord actually turned out to be. Moreover, the way it taunts you during the final fight, at least in my mind, contrasts poignantly with the way it thrashes around in a clumsy attempt to dodge the rockets it can't stop from firing at you. You can feel that GLaDOS is getting desperate as the fight wears on, even if it won't admit it. Portal 1's GLaDOS has a realness, a rawness about it. It's strangely pathetic and revolting, yet it also feels more... believable in its way. Like where the Portal 2 design appears to have been developed with the express intention of creating a character with a full range of understandable, naturalistic emotions, the Portal 1 design, in its relative disregard for such considerations, creates something more utilitarian, more like what an immobile computerized consciousness seemingly ought to look like. To put it simply, Portal 2's GLaDOS just looks like a robot to me, but Portal 1's GLaDOS really captures the essence of a consciousness trapped in a computer.
@@lcajueiro well one thing’s for sure, they both definitely freaked me out! There’s definitely no way portal would still be considered a horror psychological game with bits of comedy and not a full out horror game with those two models!
the thing that's more creepy is that if you look closely at portal 1 GLaDOS the position she is in looks like a tied up woman hanging upside down like a spider, and the thing that makes this more creepy is that GLaDOS just dangles around in portal 1, not actually moving like she's actually tied up.
i love how sassy she is with arms, like oh hey lets make this robot be so condescending and dangerous- but just to show off how much she's done with everyone, lets give her arms for five minutes
It's kinda interesting that the Portal 1 design has become kinda alien and her Portal 2 design is far more recognizable. Not to mention giving the Portal 1 version of her actual arms is far more unsettling than needed.
I'll always appreciate her Portal 1 look but yeah the Portal 2 design has certainly become the ubiquitous "canon" design, and I do prefer it for its expressiveness and the way that it looks like it has more mechanical, moving elements
There's actually this theory that glados shape resembles a woman hanging from the ceiling upside down, and it was because under all that metal there were still some parts of Caroline's body
@@BN-zv7tn thats just dumb, its always been caroline was thw person whos mind was ported into glados, like how cave johnson wanted to be preserved but died before it was ready. I swear every robot since fnaf has to be this grotesque flesh metal creature with a overly complicated backstory
Valve made a very good decision when changing GLaDOS’s appearance. The newer model is much better and is even designed with the intention of conveying emotion with a dilating eye.
The older this franchise gets and the less news we hear about any further installments the more I come accept that Lego Dimensions is probably the closest we’ll ever get to Portal 3

4:18 is terrifying, it gives me a idea for a horror game where it starts off with caroline being forced to become glados and then we cut to a scene of this and then we see glados go insane and start using the neuron toxin on the scientists
That was really cool. Even though I knew all of those versions I didn't think about how many there really were until I saw them all together like that.

I actually am not that afraid of GLaDOS with arms. It's like she's more human, and I enjoy that. She deserved to be more humanized, especially with Caroline as a pivotal plot point.

3:27 when GLaDOS turned, the motor sound was very realistic.
I want space core the meet the spaceship guy from the lego movie. they'd be great for eachother
Kinda wish we first got Carcas GladOS, then the redesign can be justified as GladOS transferring herself to a new body to foreshadow that was even an option.
Also sorta wish we got GladOS with arms. Just her being able to move around without the need for rails is terrifying.
bruh when they showed GLados with arms and Carcass is a damn horror concept
