Your videos on colour theory have been massively helpful for me as a self-taught artist. I always understood the theory, but I never really learnt how to apply it. I was at a loss of where to start. Thank you for giving such clear advice. Also, your art pieces are incredible, so realistic-looking, your use of colour really makes them come to life.
Thank you! I felt the same with colour theory and I did study art! It's often not explained in a way that makes it useable. That's why I wanted to make those videos. Glad you found it helpful.
Emma! Such excellent instruction! I wish your other viewers knew how important they leave a LIKE and even a small/short comment would help you get more views for your videos! I have paid so much more for less effective instruction! You have given wonderful examples and real world uses for pastels and using colors in any medium of paintings! Thank you!
Have been admiring your work for years. Thank you so much for your amazing tutorials. Really liked the format and explanations of this one. You are a fantastic teacher!
Emma, it is such a treat looking through your work. It is lovely to see the subtle use of complimentary colours in action. And that wedding dress appears to be white, without using white - that is amazing.
Wow I appreciate your tutorial but can't see how I could do it myself. I totally agree how the colors you've used absolutely improve the quality of work. You are amazing.
The idea in it's simplest terms is just to think of the opposite colours when trying to choose a shadow colour for example or a nice background colour. Just knowing those opposite colours starts to change your ideas when you're choosing colours. It's not something that happens in one leap, it's taken me a while to get a better feel for it. You can too!
@@EmmaColbertArt thank you for replying and for your encouragement....I have a long way to go but only perseverance and practice can achieve even a fraction of your talent. But appreciate the advice alot
This is an excellent video…just superb! Colour is so complex, yet after viewing this video, your clear instructions have really given me new insight where colour is concerned and how to improve my art! It also heightened my appreciation of your wonderful work! Thank you so much 😊!
I've always loved the way my green characters look with a magenta background. This whole time they've been complimentary colours and I didn't even know it, lol. I'm excited to to try out those other ones that you mentioned too.
Thanks Emma, this was very helpful. I'm currently painting a portrait of my mum and she's wearing a red coat and a light grey ribbed skivvy. She has grey hair, so I am wondering what would be the best combination of complimentary background colours I should use?
nice color lesson, i've been always struggling in reproducing things with light and shadows, and been thinking that light is white and shadows logically is black but the result were not quite convincing me. but now i begin to look it differently, thanks

Thank you Maria-Luisa. I really appreciate that as I've had to work on my video making skills over the years. Glad you enjoyed this one!
Thank you for explaining the difference between complimentary colours in CMY. I still use the RYB approach.
Yes they're both relevant. I just learned the RYB first and I suppose it has stuck with me.
DOUBLE WOW !!
I AM JUST TOTALLY MESMERIZED, BY YOUR GIGANTIC TALENT!!
