    Excellent tips! I also found that its OK to take breaks to refresh yourself. Otherwise you'll get burnt out like any other thing you do in life.

    This is great advise Emma. Your videos and information has really helped my pastel work, and artwork in general. Even if the background isn't the main focus, I treat it just as important as the subject. Practice, practice and as well Patience!!

    Such an amazing journey I would love to learn more about how you got to where you are now! I have been a professional Artist for over 35 years and Pastels was not a medium I used, I am excited to try a new medium that is so much looser than my work for all these years. Your work is simply amazing and I look forward to your videos! Thanks for continuing to make videos for UA-cam too!

    Thank you Emma, this is very concise and inspiring. I do need to be more grounded and I do spend more time now just musing and studying the subjects. Backgrounds used to scare me, but this will be a thing of the past. It is my intention to create some genuine income from my art and I thank you for sharing your ideas.

    Love your work and thank you for this video. I'm a begginer and have managed some good animal eyes from tutorials and posted them on my Facebook wall, but now want to try to paint a family dog who has passed on. My photo ref isn't great and the dog is a white Westy. Yours is the most realistic of a Westy I have seen in this videop Would love to learn HOW to acheive the white fur as realisticaly as you have done.

      Here is a short video on a white Westie which was also done from poor reference. ua-cam.com/video/i5ovUZDmbGw/v-deo.html This is timelapse but it might give you a few hints.

    Very few people saw your video (it deserves so much more). I just saw the baby you draw in my previous video. Was very surprised with your heavy Texas accent or Scottish, hahaha(somehow very pleasant) . I did portraits somewhere 30 years ago on the beach on Adriatic coast and I was very good. Now trying to go back to drawing with pastel and acrylic and water colours.... For fast portrait, pastel is the best. I'm here in Canada now and I bought 'shminke' as the best pastel and 'Rembrandt'. They are so tick that on 'Canson' paper left no room for pencils, so now I bought the chippiest set of pastel chalks 'Mungvo'. Soon, I will try that. Can you please tell me what combination of pastel pencils and pastel chalks go best together.
    And, what paper you have for best results.
    You have lot of videos here and I will watch them soon. I hope I get some answer from you and I think it will help very much.
    Thank you

      This video will show you all the materials I use. ua-cam.com/video/7Q0ouGdKc5c/v-deo.html
      It's great to experiment with as much as you can at the start to find what suits your style. Try different papers also as that makes a huge difference. Good luck! :-)

    Hi Emma. You work is amazing. The one thing I can't understand is how you so successfully use Velour with soft pastel. Velour is paper that doesn't hold pastel well at the best of times and this is reported by many pastel artists. The unison softness especially dusts off easily. And yet... you seem to love this combination and seemingly have no issue with it. Would you be able to make a tutorial on how you achieve this? I'm certainly not the only artist who has noticed the troubles with velour and soft pastels. Thank you!!

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  5 років тому +1

      Hi Carley Anne, I have had problems at the beginning with pastel fall off also. I think everyone does at first! I tried everything like fixatives but I have a range of methods that I use. Unison are the softest I will go and I rub each layer in really well. Thin layers are also key. Have a look at this video as I explain a lot more about how I use velour there. ua-cam.com/video/nqyhf4BNf2s/v-deo.html

    Hi Emma....just wondering if you recommend doing copies of other artists that inspire you?

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  3 роки тому

      Hi Susan,
      Absolutely! You can learn so much by copying. That's what most in the creative arts do when starting out whether it's music or art or anything else. Although I don't do it now, it's how I started too. One good thing that came from my art education, the time to study how other artists do it :-)

    Thank you for the information. My problem is that after seeing so many pastel sets it seems very expensive

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  5 років тому

      Hi Joan, I have many pastels built up over years as do many professional artists and yes they are expensive. If I wasn't doing this for a living, I wouldn't have so many. But I would still enjoy the palette I had and be able to do produce a lot with it. Pastel sticks last quite a while down to the smallest useful crumb and you definitely get what you pay for. No problem to experiment with the cheaper brands to get started and see if you want to progress further. That's how I got hooked too!

    Emma your art has been so inspirational to me. I come from a watercolor past and was a little afraid of jumping hook line and sinker into pastels. But with your encouragement I did and love it. I still paint wc faster but it will come with time. The color theory is so very true. Our eyes fool us. I am going to try the small velour pad. I have made my own recently along with Fishers/Uart. Well thankyou your paintings are so lovely!!

    That greyhound is beautiful! I can feel his fur just looking at him. He reminds me so much of late Bryn, a move loved rescue who was already an old man when I gave him a home.
