    Great video Emma. Love the way you used impressionist paintings to talk about the colors.

    Thank you so much for this terrific tutorial! I have watched so many tutes on UA-cam, and they all show the colour wheel and talk about complimentary colours, triads etc, but they rarely go on from there. You went on to discribe HOW to actually use this information and gave lots of visual examples. I learned a lot from this video - many thanks!

      Thanks Bonnie. That's what I found also. I learned my colour theory from staring at Impressionist paintings until what they were doing made sense! That's why I show examples.

    This is the best color theory tutorial I've found anywhere. It stands out because it talks about how to apply color theory in more subtle contexts to create aesthetic effects and to describe subjects more faithfully.

    An amazing tutorial showing and explaining the colour theory with complemental colours! But the showing of how to use them, is exceptional. I love all the teaching and whats in the background that goes with your tutorials that what makes them so harmonisch etc is amazing. I am learning so much from you - you have a library of knowledge and how you teach it is gold worth, your examples using it are awesome! 🙏💕

    Emma, I have only recently discovered you and your channel and can't get enough! As a new student of pastel, your generosity such as this EXCELLENT color theory video is invaluable in coaching and educating the student or interested pastel artist, regardless of painting style. The depth of information you provide, the superb painting examples, and the focus on demonstrating the information back to your own paintings solidifies the concepts you are presenting. I've learned more from you than I've learned in locally offered pastel class. Sincere, sincere thanks and kudos!

    Your use of examples of other artists really helped to explain the principles of complementary color theory exceptionally well. I had not noticed the relationships you highlighted, and those paintings are now more rich. Thanks!

      @@EmmaColbertArt I'm pretty sure that Red and Cyan are opposites, Green and Magenta are opposites, and Blue and Yellow are opposites

      @@nickytembo4112 you're right when talking about the CMY model which I actually mention in this video. I even show the colour wheel you're talking about. But not in the traditional model RGB which this video is based on. Neither are wrong in my opinion, just a different approach. I think if you're mixing paint or working digitally the CMY may be better.

    Excellent video Emma, I personally struggle a wee bit with colour theory, so I need to really study it a bit more. I am saving up to buy a print or the original painting you show at the beginning of your videos. That painting you have done brings so many emotions to me when I see it. My Granny and Granda when they were alive lived in Breada Drive, Newtownbreada Belfast and from their back bedroom were I used to sleep when I stayed over with them, shows David and Goliath and it is similar scene to your painting. It just reminds me of wonderful times I spent with my grandparents. You are such a wonderful Artist Emma.

    I really appreciate this Emma. I am slowly getting a little bit more of an understanding and also beginning to see more colors as I use your channel here on youtube and the patreon page. what I would like personally is, for the beginner, if you do another vid, of one such as this, could you draw a red line, just for this kindergartner, from the color swatch to the place on the dog or elk etc, where that color is used. that would be very helpful.

    • @EmmaColbertArt
      @EmmaColbertArt  5 років тому +2

      I know it's hard to see in the beginning. If you have Photoshop you can literally bring your image in, use the colour dropper and see the colour chosen. It's often a surprise! There are many ways to help improve seeing colour. It definitely becomes easier.

    2:31 colour blind so can’t see it which is why these colours videos theories are so important to me as a sewer. I’m basically guessing but I lean mostly TONE - apparently I do this quite well.

      That's really interesting. I bet you have a very keen eye for tonal value. Maybe the tonal value video would be of interest. I wonder can you distinguish any extra differences between warm and cool colours if just looking at tonal value. ua-cam.com/video/d9uIZe_k1xU/v-deo.html
