It happens every year - a huge gap between English Booster Box releases - the last was Paldea Evolved and the next will be Obsidian Flames - so the newest Japanese Set spikes in value. This time around - it's the return to the Kanto region in Pokemon 151.
Naturally filled with incredibly beautiful Art Rares of Pokemon from the Kanto region - Pikachu, Charmander, Squirtle and Bulbasaur, just to name a few - it also comes packed with Special Art Rares of Charizard ex, Blastoise ex and Venusaur ex.
But if that wasn't enough, there are new Full Art Trainer Rares too - and they're surging the price of Pokemon 151 Booster Boxes around the world. What should be a retail price of 5800yen is instead reaching heights of 16000yen - nearly $150USD - and it's not showing signs of slowing, despite Pokemon 151 being Made To Order.
So what's causing all this? Will the madness stop, or is there no end in sight? I've got my thoughts - but I'd love to know yours.

man Dream League was a good set - who remember? ua-cam.com/video/iLj6Np2OTgA/v-deo.html
BTW - at the 2:16 mark I say "...and that comes from the set being very limited" - this is in reference to LAUNCH DATE only, not the inevitable flurry of waved releases and the made-to-order prints. I know I should have fleshed my points out earlier about price manipulation + fake sales - not to mention with a bit more craft - I'm not trying to play both sides here, my brain is legitimately back in Australia and I covered a lot of ground here in a short span of time. Hope you can understand - much love as always!
I have one box of Dream League. Keeping it sealed I think 🤔
Hey! What mic are you using, please? Amazing content by the way!
Your take on businesses from 2020-2021 (mine included) is spot on. I know you and Opossum have had your criticisms, but I respect your genuine care for your fans. I know UA-cam views aren't paying you enough for the effort you guys put into the content.
Yeah this!!! These two guys are really making the best content in my opinion!!!
And you're videos are awesome too!!
This resell culture and hype-beast business model killed collecting for me, I lost my love for Pokémon cards
Then buy Japanese
it is obnoxious but I did enjoy waiting in line and the chase to find boxes at stores to add to my collection. That was always SUPER fun to me
More for us then🥴
I'm very sorry to hear that I hope this will die down and you find your way back
nobody forced you to collect japanese cards. They have been niche for the longest time, why do people start to care so much for them now? Oh right, money.
Fact is, if you collect English cards like you always do before the japanese boom, you wont have this problem. Things are cool in there. You can find those boxes at retail or even wholesales no problem.
Just had a huge discussion about this last night with a group of friends that are trying to get into the hobby. It sucks how the joy of opening a box of MODERN cards can be instantly ruined because of a lackluster pull.
I’m here for the master sets so it’s just less cards I need in the next box 😅 usually I’ll open like 2-3 and then start trading and buying singles.
Excellent vid Jluv! asking some great philosophical questions and handing out the sage advice.
Can't wait to see more about your USA trip
Hope you’ve been enjoying America so far! Looking forward to seeing the vlog :)
This year I've gone off opening japanese pokemon product because of your reasons exactly. You open a box, get a full art pokemon and instantly see it as an L. I just know that if I buy one of these made to order boxes, I'll still open it and will still feel bad afterwards.
My love for opening packs has instead moved to english packs when I'm at my locals playing prereleases or just opening the odd pack here and there. Opening packs with other people is just so much more fun.
I hope I get to enjoy opening Japanese packs again soon too.
It was awesome meeting you at card party, really appreciate you signing my silver pikachu plush 😊 I totally forgot to mention, but congratulations on making it to Worlds Japan, that is a huge achievement! As for this set, I'm also waiting for prices to come down (hopefully). I definitely let fomo get to me with VStar Universe and Triplet Beat, but held off on SV base set until recently. Got my one box of 151 ordered for the time being, but I'll be keeping an eye on boxes and singles prices. Take care on your travels in the meantime and hope you get some rest 😅
As always amazing videos and excellent opinions. Really nice vid
0:44 my man TwicebakedJake looks so excited to see you. Love this wholesomness 😭
LOL hugging the 1st guy and just thinking of all the times you have mocked him and your voice of him is forever in my head 🤣
Thank you so much for your information!
i personally will open this set also because of the wonderful common , uncommon or rare cards. I like the art of this set with all 151 kanto starter a lot and gets me some childhood flashbacks. Its expensive, but sometimes its worth for some personal exerperinces in my opinion. I bought one from pokemoncenter japan and one on another online side.
Great video. I have not dipped in Japanese cards giving the crazy mess but this video gives a better understanding on what’s going on.
There’s something I like about keeping a box sealed, just looks great.
Crazy to watch all of this unfold fr
People are listing packs on whatnot between $10-$35 a pack it’s absurd!
I typically buy a box to open and one to keep sealed! I bought 2 boxes for $265 2 weeks ago before prices started going up. I do understand your position and I definitely respect it. It’s definitely a big gamble but I find the fun of it even if I don’t get a hit
I bought a box of dream league for my birthday last year and really enjoyed it- love my pulls. HOWEVER now that I see the prices they’re going for sealed and the financial situation I’m currently in it makes me feel dumb. 😂 I have a box of 151 coming and I’m probably going to open it unless I can find the singles I want for a decent price.
I pre ordered in Japan,
They only gave June 15 - 21 for pre orders after that it will be closed. Items are going to be shipped by end of year
Props to you making a video after our crazy night out in k-town✨Glad you made it Philly safely. 😁
But this pattern of Japanese releases being overinflated is really feeling like a marathon at this point..
Thank you for pointing this out. I've been for a while now trying to ask the question of would you buy a brand new english booster box set for 3 to 4x retail price and because english sellers aren't as in tune with the Japanese market they would say no but, can't address the question as in depth. English retail booster box is now $160 but market retail is $100ish comparatively Japanese retail at $45 and the boxes are no where close to that. It's just insane to think about
I think one of the easiest solutions would be quite simple. Make all products (international and Japanese) come out on the same day, with the same exact items inside (just with different languages). This would break the overall dip of prices the English cards get, since the hype of the set was already finished when the Japanese set came out. This would also break the scalping scandal, since the only difference now would no longer be the date the set came out (and how rare they are) but instead the language.
OMG I got name checked, well not by name, but I'm the New Zealand guy who bought up every Japanese Sun and Moon booster box I could find here in NZ in 2020. Yes I have been watching the prices closely. I opened some Dream League and Tag Bolt when it was $250US a box. but woudn't open it now. Still have about 40 boxes of Dream League, Tag Bolt, MIracle Twin, Remix Bout and Alter Genesis left. Thanks Julan for another great video!
Managed to get an account at Tenso and ordered a made to order 151 box! the $70-80 bucks is so much better of a deal than the secondary market. i can wait for my box
all the work to get only one box is worth a $40 discount? idk
I was able to at least get a box "made to order." But it's getting out of hand with the secondary market. Sad.. hope you are having a great time!
Over 9 billion pokemon cards where printed last year. There IS an infinite amount of cards floating around out there big dawg
Have to remember - Japan is printing for Japan, not foreiginers. If you can only buy 1 booster box in Japan per acc as a Japanese citizen, imagine that in the USA or EU - Only 1 English BB per customer? The prices would SKY ROCKET.
US/EU/AUS etc can buy cases on cases of English BB's at their will a long with blisters, 3 pack blisters, tins, special boxes etc.
Japan only has BB's and 1-2 special products with packs, inventory is LIMITED.
Thanks for this. Was starting to feel like I was losing my mind seeing listing after listing on Facebook for 151 at $200 AUD for a pre-order and everyone just happy with it
Been doing singles ever since I moved to Japan in 2016. Can usually find all of my chase cards for 110-3,000 yen in mint condition and then get them graded if I ever want returns
the twicebaked hug was what we needed in this video
American preorders are coming out today ill order a lot of it would love to order the japanese set got my 1 from pokemon center and bought 1 at double retail not gone order any more unless the price drops.
this is where the fun begins
I trust you bro...1st time viewer , thanks for sharing your take
Managed to get 1 box from PC but it definitely makes financial sense to just keep it sealed. Wouldn’t want to open and get an Arbok or Bill.
I've seen 1 to 3 sar per case so the big cards are going be hard! Must boxes are going be full arts and trainers
It was so funny when the discord sound popped up and you told it too shut up because I do it sometimes too💀
It's going to be interesting too see the affect in the foreign influence in the Japanese market. Now that Pokemon Center in USA has a live page to preorder Scarlet and Violet 151.
I understand ENG and JPN are different markets.
are they unavailable b/c of out of stock or since its release is sept, it won't be for a while?
The prices won't change because the english set is still so far away
So is it a good idea to get the japanese booster from pokemon center for retail price and have it shipped through tenso? Or should I just wait for the english release? Or do both and keep the japanese sealed? I'm confused
Only you can decide based on the information at hand !
I unfortunately bought 3 because I've always loved Japanese more than English, but only reason I paid the price I paid is because I seen where celebrations is at, and figure since that's where celebrations is siting at, that's gonna be the lowest it goes, not considering this has way more to it then that one 🤷♂️ that's more just my justification to myself 😅 I'll keep one sealed open two, and buy singles later down the road when the new set comes out. I also ordered one from Japan for retail and I might end up selling that one and put it towards getting singles is my logic I'm gonna go with right now.
Soooo what’s up with card shops listing cards 2x what they are going for on mercari. Am I missing something?
Speaking facts! 🙌🏼 Everyone! Just wait a few months after a new japanese set comes out! Vstar universe and Triple beat was the perfect example! Pre orders were over $100+ and now you can get them for under $100!
An honest question here JLUV, I got one box from my local shop, I did pull the Erika SAR. Is this something you would hold, or is this something that should be sold right away to be the most financially responsible? Or can we really not tell where it's going at this point? Thanks!
My chase for the set is the Giovanni SAR I’m so happy it’s cheap and I can just buy it!
You have Japanese sellers still coming up with loads of sealed 151 cases, even after the announcement from PC, so I doubt much will be done to prevent this. I am happy they did come up a solution and lets be honest, it's the best solution, which is allowing people to order at least 1 booster box at MSRP. There's still opportunity for people to buy Japanese booster boxes at MSRP and I hope they do this with future special set boxes as well.
I was able to order a booster box one for retail. That one I will keep sealed. I won another one in a giveaway that I want to open when S&V 151 comes out
I loved opening Japanese booster boxes and I wanted to keep buying them, but once vstar universe hit and I couldn’t even get a box for less then 160 USD I just went straight to buying singles 😂
I was gonna keep mine sealed but I accidentally crushed it in my bag so the flap came off. Good box with Mew UR but it had a print line and had white chips on it. Sigh.
gonna get the english set for my birthday in early october! ^^ never understood why people cant just be patient for things like this
Watching rippers getting excited over reverse holos will be fun
To me the issue is that triple msrp for a japanese box is still the normal msrp for an english box so it seems "normal/reasonable"
Spot on ✍🏽
When we getting a video of your favourite cards?
Bro. What you got against arbok?
that one guy chasing the Arbox ex SR watching this video like 😡😡😡
I think most the singles will chill out in a few weeks. Hard times for someone who loves opening boxes though 😂. I managed to get one at retail. I’m just going to rip that and pretend it never happened… Grab one later to keep sealed, not going to worry this early on. Cheers JLUV 🍻
I opened an eevee heroes gym box a couple of years ago that I bought for £150. That box is pushing 1.5k now. Like you im struggling to justify opening jp boxes that i own, knowing how much money I'll be flushing down the toilet if the pulls are bad
There is not a doubt in my mind Im going to get Arbok in my couple of overpriced boxes. I was actually expecting these to be much pricier, it couldve been so much worse if you had a Misty in this set. Could you imagine?
TAKE MY MONEYZ
then there's casual collectors like me who just want every Bede related card /item and the resale is slowly getting higher and higher xD I got 3 cards to go. I'm gotta say I'm super glad my fav trainer characters cards arent going for insane prices atm.
I got my box last night, won the Pokémon center lottery etc etc. I pulled the Arbok full art SR 😢😢. But apart from that the cards are fantastic. Lots more small scratches and uncentered cards than ever before though. Must have been rushed.
I’ve opened plenty of Japanese booster boxes and pull an average secret rare. It now not worth opening Japanese with prices equal to or above English booster boxes
We need some more talk about market manipulation. I've just spent the last 30 minutes checking the prices of some of my cards and it makes absolutely no sense why they are selling for the prices that they currently are!
nah I have the same feeling the 1 made to order box I got will probably be kept sealed cause by now its stupid to open a box that costs $120+ and I hate it that I can't enjoy opening packs anymore
Do you know how to order from Japan to the US ?
@@JusZard yes, i learned it from jluv's video 'The Best Pikachu card of 2022 is free" in that video he made a guide on how to set up a proxy with blackship. I haven't had any issues with them and they got a lot of options to customize on how you want them to consolidate your packages.
@@moti07 oh wow so do I just contact them and tell them I want to order Pokémon 151? Thanks for your time and help bro
I love collecting sealed product. I wish buying Japanese pokemon was easier/ cheaper.
Going thru the trouble of opening a drop shipper and pokecenter account in Japan just to get 1 booster box is unreal.
I hope these lower in price.
Keeping it sealed is nice but I personally like opening my booster boxes. I feel like keeping it sealed just because of the value I’d perpetuating the problem of people just getting these to sell them. Not to collect the cards. I haven’t bought this set though because I don’t really know how to buy Japanese booster boxes for retail lmao
Markets so weird! Took a break and came cack to WhatNot streams charging $20-$30 per pack of 151……..it’s insane
I saw that, they would be at $1 starts and find their way up to $50-90. I'm all about making a profit and I set parameters on my stream where people won't out id the people who are trying to get a pack so they can enjoy it.
I’ve always am puzzled with how japanese products are 3x the price of MSRP, and have always felt that we the consumers are getting ripped off since the market price is manipulated. I appreciate your video in providing a different point of view as well as sharing some knowledge I didn’t know before.
It didn't really happen until eevee heroes. Before that I got japanese boxes in the usa for like 60 which was a small 20 buck markup
What if Arbok makes me Muk backwards?
I was thinking of getting a box of Japanese 151, but I'm out. I'm switching to finishing my collection of a few Manga series instead. Pokemon Cards are too expensive, packs and singles.
Market manipulation is certainly a factor, but it's a combination of so many things that it would take a huge essay to write into this UA-cam comment. As it applies to Japan specifically, the Yen has taken a massive hit against the US Dollar. It's a topic that no one in the Pokemon UA-cam seems to touch on at all, though I understand we're not economists here, we're just here to buy cardboard. But some exploration is badly needed in on that end. Japanese people are using Pokemon cards as an alternate investment vehicle, and I suspect it's not just popularity/scalping/manipulation driving the market. It's likely a lot of adults looking to park their Yen into an investment that is not going to sink overnight (like stocks did). The Japanese economy has been weakening for years, and people are just looking to stay above water.
very interesting insight, that would be a reasonable explanation to why it would jump that high. A rise of 400% in the span of a month though is nowhere near real gain. Someone who would want to invest their money wouldnt get dream league then, for example. They would buy something else thats still not pumped (vmax climax, shiny star v) Who in their right mind would pay 800 bucks for a BB that was 300 a month ago. Surely no one who is scared the main fiat of their country is tanking.
Needs to be talked about more for sure
the dollar is also on a hard downfall for years already, time for more americans to think about investing in pokemon
I don’t really know how to get Japanese product shipped to the US. That’s why I’ve paid so much on Japanese packs.
Your in my city 😅 go to dalessandros and get a cheesesteak before you leave 😊
Thank you for making these videos. And I’m not gonna get into what we talked about at card party 😂 but it wasn’t this. But for real, thank you- cause I’ve had people come on my page and say Japanese regular prices are $140- people are just so Misinformed.
Jluv can you please assist me in ordering a box from PC Japan ? I’m here in the US and I really need to figure out what proxy address company I should use your not responsible for my choices I just need to figure out how to do it I just want to keep my box sealed thanks in advance bro !
I think that in general these types of products enter a weird zone of...me as a collector I would love to open a box...I haven't purchased a box yet because I think they will come down in price.
HOWEVER
This reminds me of the 25th anniversary special collector with the gold metal cards....I 100000% percent thought those would come down below 300$ which is 2.5x retail and they never did. They actually bottomed out at like 315 and now it's closer to 400.
It all boils down to FOMO, I don't think anyone wants to pay 3x / 4x prices but if the price never comes down what are you going to do...
Ugh really want to complete the 151 set but it ain't going to happen with these prices 😮💨
Availability. People don't want to order online and take risk all the time. And a lot of times they want to pull the cards themselves.
They want what they can't get. (Not saying they can't get it but a large amount of effort could possibly be required to get it).
I am a reseller. But you'd be amazed how many people are waiting on me to get the box.
Its so difficult to be fair.
Japanese Distros won't give the prices people think.
There's a couple products that are made to order already and how is that doing? Not very well people don't want to wait that long. Also you need to use the special system to buy & ship it to a different location and then ship it to you. So that only really benefits Japan if they're willing to wait.
And yes it's better to just buy the singles obviously. Another reason why it's extra hype is because it is gen 1 pokémon with a classic art style but then extended arts attached to it. I people tend to forget that. If it was an XY evolution style art. It would not do as well or would crash very quickly if it was released now. XY got crazy because it was kind of getting difficult to obtain because it got old when the boom happened again. And it gives you that little vibe of opening base set pack.
"made to order" doesn't always mean the market will be flooded. If people mostly think it will be over printed and they don't order. Then it ends up under printed
Master ball reverse is a contributor
I mite open one & keep one sealed. Wish i could get Japanese. Think those days our over.
im doing the same thing with my 151 box
I needed to hear some common sense at this point. Thank you.
Jluv dropping bombs, both on and off the Toilet
Its just Japanese set are just super hyped and people are willing to pay for it. I dont think these prices will decrease any time soon.
last year I converted entirely to buying singles since the japanese market has become incredibly difficult and frustrating. I love japanese cards more than anything but I just can’t justify buying sealed boxes at the price they are at 😂
I feel like investors and investment bots have entered the market full steam. That is the only reason I can think of to explain why the cards are going so high so quickly.
I think it's way too soon to tell......it will come down I think....when new sets come out people move on, everyone just does
I genuinely think half the people buying Japanese 151/ japanese boxes in general dont realise that the retail price is only like £31 and just assume its close to english pricing
Me with 15 Dream League boxes in my basement: 😎
Also me that fire sold for a couple of bucks 40 Solgaleo and Lunala GX now worth hundreds in PSA 10: 🙃🔫
Feels like yesterday when you opened that box with the Reshi and Zekrom SR + Rosa and I commented "HOW!? You basically got all the hits I want in one box!" lmao. Good times.
This set will go up ashamed I couldn't get it for msrp
I always respect how real you are with all your subscribers and viewers 🫡
Would it be a good idea for me to buy and hold 3 ultra premium for resale? I’m shocked how much celebrations have 3x already
you're the best jluv
I just keep everything sealed these days so card price or "gambling" doesn't matter to me.
So glad I have no nostalgia for Gen 1, I like them fine enough, but I don’t need 151, I’ll get an English etb, but that’s really it.
everybody says it's made to order, but you have to attend the lottery and only ONE per person, this is harder to get a few of than a limited english set.
Made to order isn’t lottery. If you order one you will get it
@@okJLUV so it was just for pre-ordering prolly, but still just one per person
Spot on about the Japanese market. That being said, I just bought 4 booster boxes. Pray for me!!
Pokemon may "print to order", but it's not enough. One box per person is pitiful tbh, especially when it would take god knows how many boxes to pull all the secrets and complete the set.
I agree with you that paying £100+ just to pull a full art arbok is not worth the risk. When jp boxes were £30 I opened them all day because it was low risk, no way I'm opening a £100 box. I don't like those odds.
I'm sticking to English now. I opened a paldea evolved box and it was epic, got an alt wo-chien, gold super rod, silver foretress, 3 full arts, 3 character rares and a load of playable cards. I'm done with jp for the foreseeable future
Really appreciate this video, too much FOMO energy burning up in this market making things way more expensive than they should be.
There’s god packs too 🙄 so people are weighing boxes as well yayyyyy 🙃🤦🏻♂️
I love this take, I’m one that really REALLY struggles to keep things sealed, especially for a period of time. But for most, we’ve all got bills to pay, emergencies that require funds, so it is logical if you can get them at retail to sit on them for a bit.
Every collectable hobby has ‘investment’ and when we all die we can’t take it with us (also state pensions are terrible lol) so makes sense - just a shame some are hoarding cases and cases 😔
I’m only getting my retail price box too, I’ve regrettably had to take a step back on buying sealed Japanese now with my newborn now here.
Weirdly I’m having fun opening English, but it sucks that I can’t collect the cards I prefer because too many people are making ridiculous amounts of money flipping them :/
And I don’t have a problem with breakers tbh, I think it has its place. But there are sooo many bad ones that its just pricing so many people out 😔
It's funny this video posts the day after I decided to check ebay about this new set. I've been on break for collecting since mid SwSh card releases due to the inflation issue but I saw some nice cards on ads or whatever and thought to myself "Neat, I might actually buy cards for this set. Mew is my favorite Pokemon and it has a card I want".
I wasn't optimistic given JP cards have been in trouble for a long while now but I thought maybe just a 10-30 USD hike would be fine for at least one box, maybe two. I checked listings for the JP set and whoo boy. Shit is insane. I know the average price for booster boxes are like 50 USD but I see listings up at like 180-225 USD. One dude was selling 10 booster boxes as a bundle for 1,000+ USD, you can't make this shit up.
No way in hell I wanted to pay any of the prices for that. So, I guess I'm still on break and hope this on order set means prices will plummet but not optimistic about that...
English pokemon 151 will be more worth it if hit rates are like scarlett and violet. Japanese still cool but wait for it
