OMG! Today is March 11 2024. I thought I'd go back and look at the old Dutch Oven cooking Vlogs at the NY cabin. There was JC, Frankie, and the cabin. Nice flash back.
What a show stealer that doggone Frankie is.For a high energy dog he is very well behaved.Love the way he sat patiently waiting for a bite of ham and when you gave him a piece he was so gentle taking it from you.Just shows me you have worked with him a lot and I respect you for that. The rest of the video also was top notch.Well made/edited and thoughtful as well as useful. You keep making them and i will keep watching and sharing them.
Thank you my friend, glad you enjoyed it. Yes Frankie is very gentle when taking a morsel. Not like my Lab that would swallow your hand ha ha. Frankie's a cabin boy through and through. Loves the woods as much as I do.
Man and his dog enjoying the wildlife and wilderness !! Got his cabin, cooking outdoors a great simple dinner. It just doesn’t get any better !! Your video made me feel I was there and ironically I live in the smoky mountains of East Tennessee !! Thank you for such a refreshing and uplifting video !!
Thank you for sharing. Just cooked my first turkey in my dutch oven on Christmas Day. Came out excellent (just a tad of scorching on the bottom though). Have a safe, happy and healthy 2015 and a big scratch to Frankie!
Man, you're a character! Just got a dutch oven and was looking for some recipes when I stumbled on to your channel. Glad I did. Looks like you're living life right. Keep these cooking videos coming!
Hey Boss...good to see you again! So, my wife has really gotten into the cast iron...it's about all she cooks with any more! Great stuff and still cheap enough to pick up older stuff at yard sales! Everything she get's needs to be taken down to base and re-conditioned, but she's got it to a science now so, no worries. About the olive oil seasoning. Back in the day, I suspect olive oil was not available to the settlers and trappers so, what might they have used? Bear grease? Lard? Must have had to be something available and renewable I would imagine. Thanks for another great one...oh, and throw Frankie a ham bone!!
JC I don't care what you video, I just want you to video :))) I never know what to expect but I'm never let down! Loved the moon over the tree it reminded me of my mom :)) I grew up on a mountain and I went home just before entering the Air Force to spend time with her. One night while sitting by a open fire in the yard watching the moon rise over another mountain she said with a tear "no matter how far away you go, remember if you miss me just look at the moon and know I will be looking at the same moon and you won't feel so far away". She passed in 2000 and I still remember her words every time I see the moon. You gave me a great memory tonight, thank you. Now I'm hungry for ham :))))
Reading that gave me a good feeling. Thank you for sharing that Melody. I didn't film the moon myself so I had to rely on stock footage to get the scene I wanted but everything else was shot at the cabin. I sincerely thank you for all your views and comments. I always enjoy your responses. The ham was delicious. I'll be eating it all week :-))~
Another great cooking video JC! I literally tasted that ham... mmm mmm I can only imagine how tasty those carrots were as well! I grow all of my veggies here at the cabin and nothing beats cooking regularly year around with your own! Nice tips with regards to the outside temperature. I am glad you emphasized the importance of non-use of detergents with these cast iron cookware! The importance is highly underestimated, and the olive oil tip for a light seasoning inside and out is key to the iron lasting for a lifetime and then some! I am looking forward to many more videos JC... as always, thank for sharing!
With a proper bed of coals I wouldn't need to add the wood but I didn't get there early enough so had to improvise. I need to find a deeper dutch oven for large foods like that. The lid was pressing against the ham so I new it would scorch on top. I'm still eating ham ha ha.
Boss slow down and relax!! I know that you want your video's to be the best but they are!! I can't wait until the next one! that's how great they are. Also would love to see a regular day at your homestead from sun up till sun down. Your awesome and we can't just get enough of you and Frankie!!!! Awesome Job "Boss" Thanks!!!
You,sir, live well. My Missus and me had just finished supper before we watched this video and we were both drooling by the time you sliced that ham. Nice one. Thank you and look forward to your next episode.
Let me start by saying, your living the way I hope to one day. Glade I found your channel. Lot of helpful videos. Love the dog. Waiting for the next video. Thanks.Ronnie,Texas.
My 15 qt Dutch Oven and home fireplace were my best friends during Hurricane Sandy. Did stews, Boston Baked Beans and baked bread while unprepared neighbors ate MRE's.
I have really been enjoying your videos. They are professional in quality, very educational and always help to take me back into the woods while I am at home. I laughed when you commented about the high demand from viewers for more videos. You are a one man show and that is what makes your videos so special in my opinion. Well, sorry...you and Frankie!! I always miss the wilderness and through your videos I get a bit of that escape. Thank you. I admire your practical approach to things and the advice you give helps me to put things in perspective in my life. Thanks again!. Ron
I find your videos soothing and reassuring... many of the things you do, I do also, (like it or not) because we are rural, retired and living on a fixed income, thrift rules here. So good to see the ideas you share. that cold box, I LOVE, thinking about something like that for next year. I have the perfect spot on the north side of my house.
I could smell that ham all the way from Boston and Man did it smell good. Really look forward to all your videos, your channel is one of the few I thoroughly enjoy. Thanks Boss for sharing, Franky seemed to enjoy your cooking, he knows who butters his bread. Thank You, Vinny
Great video Boss, your video's always make my day. If only more of us would take the simple path in life, no matter where we live or what we do, and focus less on "material things". I have been adding to my cast iron collection, and you can't beat it for cooking. Glad to see frankie got a bite or two of the ham. Stay well !!
Frankie's getting his fill alright. I love ironware for everything but scrambled eggs and acidic foods like spaghetti sauce. All other foods get the iron. Stuffing that ham in a microwave would not compare and wouldn't be half as rewarding as cooking it in 20 degree weather.
Wow great looking ham. Love to cook in my Dutch ovens. The more you use them and care for them properly the better they perform!! Another great video. Thanks for posting it!!
Boss , your channel has got to be the best one on You tube . I check every day to see if you have posted a new one . I really like going over and over your past vids when you are building something . The cooking vids are great as well . What I'm I saying here , they're all great . We are so blessed to have a man like you sharing your know how with us . May God bless you and Frankie .
You have a life style that is envious to a large amount of people, probably more envious than those who aren't. As I have told you before I also own a fairly good sized farm and have often thought of putting some sort of cabin back ib the woods to more or less have a retreat to avoid the hectic lifestyle associated with the problems of the times. I am also a lot older than you are (71 and almost 72 years of age) and still in fairly good health that would allow me to do all the work involved in building such a project. As of now I am gathering the materials needed to this task and when all is gathered, I will start unless some unforseen ailness strikes. Great videos you produce, Keep on producing them, I enjoy each one you post, immenselly
Thank you my friend. Not sure if you are the one who wrote in the past but your message familiar. I'm sure if you ever build that cabin you won't regret it. My cabin is only a few miles from my homestead but it's a whole other world in itself. I treasure my time there and sure you will do likewise in yours. Best of luck to you.
Yep most likely it was me, I am always awestruck at what you have accomplished in life, myself I think I started too late, but hopefully I'll have that getaway place before the time for me to check out of this world arrives.
Nortekj If you're the one I'm thinking about, you live in KY. I have some Utube friends I'd like to meet that also live there. Maybe I'll come pound a nail or two with ya if you ever get to building that retreat. I go with my gut feelings and they tell me to do so :-)) Happy tails my friend.
I'm a very recent subscriber to your channel, and hubby and I have been watching your videos from the beginning. This particular video is one of my favorites so far. We've been using cast iron cookware for most of our many years of marriage, but we haven't had a bona fide dutch oven. I hope to purchase one before spring when we can start using our backyard fire pit. The ham looked gorgeous! And, oh, the moon, with that beautiful song in the background! Thank you so much for what you do to make your channel so wonderful. You're our new favorite :-)
I am Sharing your "Dutch Oven" cooking videos with My Sister in law Chris , so she can pass them along to Her Sister Patty who is a "Dutch Oven Nevada State Champion"....... I look forward to seeing more of your video series ! Thank You Sir !
I use my dutch oven a lot. Chicken & dumplings is my family's favorite. Nice add in of Franky winking after playing your guitar. Take care and have a Merry Christmas.
Good job Boss, getting into cast iron cooking myself, don't have a dutch oven yet but I use all the same ways of caring and cleaning my pans as you do, works great !
Boss every morning I check your sight for a new video. At 2 am you instantly put a smile on my face. I to have a dutch oven and enjoy cooking with it.Thanks for the clean up tips,I'm thinking I need to dig mine out, clean her up and give it a go. Thanks for all the great videos,I'll be patiently waiting for the next one. O yea, give Frankie a pat for me. Have a great Holiday.
Thank you my friend. I had to rely on someone else's footage for the moon shot but gotta do that once in a while. I felt it was a good fit though. Thanks for commenting.
That was beautiful boss cooking ham I have couple Dutch ovens which I will be using in a week when I'm off lovem gonna cook ham And chicken at different times I'm looking forward to enjoying the food mmmmm! Thanks for some hints boss !
It's awesome you threw this up my father in law and I were talking about cast iron this morning as I was cleaning out my cast iron pan from breakfast. People of my age group (I'm 27) don't know cookware let alone cast iron. We're to into McDonald's. For the last 3 years it's what I've gotten for xmas. Have 2 pans and a grill pan and this year is a Dutch oven. Love every peice I have. Use almost daily. Not just fancy wall art lol.
It makes me feel good to cook my food in the same ironware my grandparents used. This dutch oven is just a cheepo but my vintage stuff will be shown soon. Thanks for commenting.
Cool vid boss! I have one of those dutch ovens just like yours. I found it at the dump. Its in perfect condition other than just a little fine layer of rust. I think I need to get it out of the shed and clean it up and use it!! Thanks for the info boss and great video as always.
Getting momma a new one for Christmas you just can't beat them. Boys JC that vid made me hungry looks like I got some cooking to do. Thanks for sharing my friend
Good to hear from ya buddy. You're one person I want to stay in touch with from the Swamp. I have friends with property on Deer Isle as well as you folks so we'll hook up again in the future. All the best to you my friend.
Definitely JC we will cross path again in the future I'm sure old boy. I want to get back out to that big puddle you got to your north western for some fishing.
MrBarkspud I'm at my cabin as I type this. I stay here a lot. I want to stay in touch with you but won't be on the forum much. Believe it or not, I got a call from Jack Durham again the other night, aka trapperjack. He calls my house, gives me a bunch of flack for banning him and hangs up on me. It's been nearly a year since he was banned and he's still bothering me at home. What is he still in 5th grade? I don't miss the forum crap at all buddy but there's a few guys I'd like to stay in touch with. Happy Holidays my friend.
I don't spend much time on the forum anymore either. Just not as fun as when you was there. Most of the folks I met and enjoyed on there I talk with on phone and such. Keep those vids coming my friend...
Oh my gosh that looked so good. I just love all of your video's. No pressure but like Melody said, I just want you to video it. Love it. Hi Frankie. Janice
I watched your other video on cast iron. I went and found mine, used the vinegar trick you suggested to get the rust off. Seasoned it with light coats of olive oil followed by baking it in oven. Just as you said that baby is smooth and looks brand new. Love your videos. Keep on Keepin' on.
A friend shared this video on FaceBook, and I started watching and instantly knew I found a channel that I will truly enjoy. Really glad I found you channel, and I just became your newest subscriber :)
Food looked great got to get me a Dutch oven when you pulled that ham out i could almost smell it great video love to watch your cooking videos will wait for the next one .
Good video. I like my Dutch Oven too. Easy great tasting cooking. I have not used my in a while and seeing this I think I will do something about that this weekend.
Looks really good Boss.Your making me hungry so I think you accomplished your goal.lol Love vid.Have a great weekend and tell Frankie hey.God Bless my friend.
I didn't have the coals I needed but it all worked out in the end. So much more fun than popping it in a microwave ha ha. All the best to ya Bobby. Thanks for commenting.
Great video, I always enjoy putting the Dutch oven on the wood stove in the winter and cooking a feed. Gonna have to try it outside on a fire one of these days. All the best to you and Frankie. Regards Mark
Ya gotta bring that dutch oven out to deer camp buddy. Dutch oven in the coals, beer in one hand, pipe in the other and a dog at your feet. Life is good.
I am always happy with any videos you put out. Weather it be cooking, the cabin, hunting or trapping. That ham looked delicious. I don't think it would have lasted 1 meal with me. lol I do like the fire ring you have there. It looks like an old truck tire rim. I have a front tractor tire rim that works great for a fire pit. And the best part of it was that I got it for free. Can't beat free.
My fire rings are about shot. One is a burnet out washtub and the other is a burnt out barrel ring. Time to get a truck rim. As I'm typing this I'm getting ideas. Glad you're enjoying the vids my friend. Thank you for all your views and comments.
I subscribed because I had searched wood cook stove and your video popped up. And I subscribed then and there. My boyfriend wants to get a wood cook stove when we get a house. Thanks for your amazing videos.
Boss, that's the way my late grand mother and my mother use to clean the pots after cook with wood. And some times when the food get burn specially the rice I clean the cook ware like you does..That's the way I learn from my granny and my mom.Great video boss.By the way you make me hungry, that meat looks delicious.Greetings...
MJ Trainor LOL. If you ever do send him a Frisbee, please don't send the hard plastic ones because they break his teeth. Wouldn't want you to go through the troubles of sending something he won't use. Thank you kindly.
I really look forward to your videos. One of my favorite things to cook in a dutch oven is pineapple upside down cake. Yum! I bet that ham did smell good on a cold day outside. Been subscribing for awhile now and it's always a good day when I receive one of your videos. I admire how you live your life and how you knew what you wanted at a young age and planned for it. Took me a little longer to evolve to your way of thinking. Thanks for sharing. You are a very kind person.
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. When I was growing up, my best friend's mother always made pineapple upside down cake. I loved it and haven't had it since. Hearing of your brought back good memories :-)
hooorayyyy more wood stove cooking!!! I have watched you make lasagnas several times now!!! lol!!! I love the kitchen queen....saving my pennies for one!

Lard? Wicked Moon Rise. Living the life of Riley! Real nice JC, Thanks for sharing.

The cabin yard had nice aromas that day :-)

People of my age group (I'm 27) don't know cookware let alone cast iron. We're to into McDonald's. For the last 3 years it's what I've gotten for xmas. Have 2 pans and a grill pan and this year is a Dutch oven. Love every peice I have. Use almost daily. Not just fancy wall art lol.
It makes me feel good to cook my food in the same ironware my grandparents used. This dutch oven is just a cheepo but my vintage stuff will be shown soon.
Thanks for commenting.
Keep the Dutch Oven ones coming! I just got one for myself and I can't wait to start trying it out!
I'll be doing more on the topic soon. Congrats on your new oven Tara. You'll love it.
Cast iron rocks! I cook just about everything in cast iron. :)
Couldn't agree more. The only things I don't use my rion for are scrambled eggs and acidic foods like spaghetti sauce. Everything else gets the iron.
Oh my! Ham is one of my favorites! Nice video, looking forward to more dutch oven cooking!!
I've got plenty of leftovers ha ha.
You edit your videos very well for an ol farmer as they would say. Great stuff.
+Jeff Nordengren Thank you.
Truly enjoy all of your work. Thanks for sharing.

Can't wait for winter outdoor cooking. Thanks for the video Bozeman.
Gotta love campfire chow :e))
Thanks! Nice looking meal.
I'm looking forward to the new ones.
Cool vid boss! I have one of those dutch ovens just like yours. I found it at the dump. Its in perfect condition other than just a little fine layer of rust. I think I need to get it out of the shed and clean it up and use it!! Thanks for the info boss and great video as always.
Get that oven hot buddy. you'll be glad you did.
I still got your phone number as well and give yah a call one of these evenings
Keep those vids coming my friend...
i used to cook that way all the time when i was on the reservation.
Time to get the ironware out.
You've gotta love the cast iron cookware 😊
Another great video JC! I could smell dinner from here and it smelled great.
Tasted good too buddy.
Oh my gosh that looked so good. I just love all of your video's. No pressure but like Melody said, I just want you to video it. Love it. Hi Frankie. Janice
The ham was awesome. Still eating it too and so is Frankie :-)
Great! I’m ready to go to bed and now I’m hungry again!! 😂 Great Video! 🥰 to the 4 of you...
I watched your other video on cast iron. I went and found mine, used the vinegar trick you suggested to get the rust off. Seasoned it with light coats of olive oil followed by baking it in oven. Just as you said that baby is smooth and looks brand new. Love your videos. Keep on Keepin' on.
The vinegar works great don't it? Thanks for commenting.
Good video excellent cooking tips and it was a great looking ham

I wonder why I haven't saved this vid to my Camp cookin file yet. Doing it right now
Thanks :-)
Great video, I always enjoy putting the Dutch oven on the wood stove in the winter and cooking a feed. Gonna have to try it outside on a fire one of these days.
All the best to you and Frankie.
Regards
Mark
Ya gotta bring that dutch oven out to deer camp buddy. Dutch oven in the coals, beer in one hand, pipe in the other and a dog at your feet. Life is good.
That JC is one of my favorite meals. Man that made my mouth water. Later buddy and all the best.
Boss I love the way everything taste great however what empresses me the most is the taste of the carrots they are the sweetest I have ever tasted!
I subscribed because I had searched wood cook stove and your video popped up. And I subscribed then and there. My boyfriend wants to get a wood cook stove when we get a house. Thanks for your amazing videos.

Thanks JC
Superb vid, BOTS! Thanks so much for sharing!
And thanks for commenting.
thebossoftheswamp Gotta send some hugs and a frisbee to Frankie!
