I read about how to make an industrial tumbler out of a rear axle of a big semi truck with the rims and tires in place. You want to cut an opening in the highest part of the rim to load rocks. The article said a cover is not needed but I always thought if I was going to do one I would have a hinged door sealed with inner tube rubber. The idea is to set up a motor geared down so the tires rotates slowly and all the rocks stay in the lowest part of the tire at all times tumbling over each other. Each tire can hold about 100 lbs of rocks and you have 4 tires going at all times each one with a different grit. Always use same tire for the same grit. You rotate the rocks once a week and you have a 100 lbs of polished tumbled stones each week. I have been wondering if you could use quartz sand as grit for the first stage to do the rough rounding off? I am posting this on all videos about rock hounding to spread the idea, if this is you channel and you do not like that let me know.
The fact that the tumbling will all take place in a rubber tire should help keep the noise down. The rocks should never touch the rim. I have suggested to people that they make a sound proof shed just big enough to be practical so the noise will be minimized. Plus the rubber in a tire is thick and should absorb a lot of the noise. Also you should have a small fan on the motor to keep it cool. A high quality motor will be a must as it will run 24 hours a day. I am no expert but with the proper gearing the motor should not be under too much stress.
I would sell the tumbled stones. Once tumbled, you grade them by quality and type. Some would be really valuable. I bet you could average $10 usd per pound with just good found material and more if you have high grade material. Definitely not for the weekend rock hound but if you sell stones or want to, what a cheap way to start. You could tumble other people's rocks for a fee or shares too. You could make one with car tires for a smaller scale operation. There has to be a lot of people with a 30 year in the making, 3 ton pile of rocks out behind their house. With this they could see results from all that collecting.

I built my own rock tumbler out of the DC motor and the 2 end rollers from an old treadmill. I have an old transformer, I think I'm using around 12-15 volt winding, ran through a rectifier, and it runs that treadmill motor at the perfect speed. I can fit three barrels at a time across it. 2 back to back, and I have a roller wheel separating the third. I also have a roller wheel at each end just as a bumper to keep them from rolling off. Running one little Barrel at a time does take awhile and after about a year of constant running the Shaded pole motor tend to wear out. I can go through a lot of rocks with three barrels running at a time. Two regular sized ones, and one larger one. Seems I'm always coming home with rocks in my pocket lol. I have an entire dresser drawer filled with polished agates and other rocks.
I have actually thought about finding something like a large, flat lawn mower tire or something. I can separate my rollers to accommodate whatever size tire I can find. That would allow me to Tumble some larger rocks that won't even fit in the large rubber barrel that I have.
One of these days I would also like to try to Cobble together some sort of a slab polisher. I have a slab saw and some really neat looking slabs that I have cut, but no way to polish them :(

@@keithyinger3326 I was watching a video about a shaker table for gold separation. I believe shaker tables have a lot of industrial uses. There must be some old ones on used industrial tool sites and auctions. I was thinking that would be the way to go to get a head start on making a big lap

might be good to place v mat like at the top of a sluice box on the inside and outside to help with grip inside and out and Noise

You can use a pease of inertub around or over to give traction & dampen the noise.

Check out my second high-capacity rock tumbler build. The first design had issues. This one works much better. ua-cam.com/video/r-y1kz58su0/v-deo.html

hello congratulations for your content on your channel, extremely interesting and detailed. allow me to leave you some small suggestions, if you want to reduce the noise, close everything under a box lined internally with sound-absorbing foam,
if it's not too hot, the engine can also fit, but if it's hot, create a hole in the box for the belt and keep the engine out. for maximum traction between the can and the wheel you can glue a toothed belt to both, obviously with the teeth facing outwards and trying to match the correct pitch of the teeth (excuse the google translation from Italian.)

Love it. For better grip how about wrapping the pipe with inner tubes it might help with the sound too

Good Morning Mike, Great job! Please film your first clean-out. I'm going to guess that because of the banded iron - the sludge clean-up may require a haz-mat suit?? Good luck! Take Care, Jim

Duct tape or gorilla tape around the middle might help with the noise by absorbing some of the pvc rattle.

You have the basis for a ball mill to bring your incinerated chips to powder.

I’m just learning 3d printing, but could you print knuckling on the rollers to get grip? I love tumbling, glad your getting into it, look forward to seeing the results.

I wonder if gluing sheet cork or rubber to the tumbler would reduce the noise?
