Hello! I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying our content just as much as I enjoy making it! So the recipe instructions actually come with the tumbler but the ceramic media and big bag of grit do not. Typically I use 1.5tsp of each grit type for harder rocks (fine, pre-polish, polish) for 24 hours each (36hrs. for polish lately), adding a half cap of water at the 12 hour mark to maintain slurry consistency. @@naturalstones4529 Thanks. I've been using the lot-o tumbler now for a few months and i'm just curious what other peoples recipe is that use it. I used the recipe that came with the instructions but have been experimenting lately. I usually pre-shape my rocks on the tile saw then run them in coarse in the rotatory tumbler for final shaping. I run stage 2, 3 and polish in the lot-o. Lately for stage 2 I've been using 2tbsp of 120/220 silicon carbide grit for 2 days. Stage 3 I use 1tsp of 500 Aluminum oxide grit + 1 tbsp borax for 3 days. For Polish i run 1 tsp of Alumina (10,000 grit) + 1 tbsp borax for 2 days. I've been getting a much better shine with this recipe. I'm also tumbling agate and jasper most of the time so the rocks are pretty hard and take a nice polish anyway.
@@RockhoundingLife That sounds like a good recipe! Have you noticed a noticeable difference in the polish when using the borax vs. without?
@@naturalstones4529 Yes. The borax helps the Aluminum oxide adhere to the rock better forming a nice coating. It also helps with clean up. I will sometimes burnish with 2 tbsp of borax for 2hrs after every stage in the lot-o just to help clean the grit off the rocks.

You are welcome! I prefer non gem rocks as well and I do most of my projects on Igneous and metamorphic rocks. Glad I could help.

@@suzanna6471 I got the nat geo for 89.99 it works pretty good. It's slow going, but I liked it a lot. I got some really awesome rocks from it.

I NEVER see anyone polish granite, unakite, and other volcanic rocks and I also appreciate this viseo.

Awesome video! I love your enthusiasm! My son has recently got into rock tumbling, and has the hobby tumbler from Nat Geo. For rocks found at the beach/sound that are already round & smooth, do you suggest skipping some of the grit sessions, and going straight to polishing?

That "galaxy" rock reminds me of Jupiter! It's actually crazy how similar the patterns look to the gas storms and swirls on jupiter.

When you took the rocks out around 4:25 or so, was that after one tumble or was that multiple tumbles with different grit levels? I have a cheaper rock tumbler and you have to use like 4 different powders to get them polished like that. If it was just one tumble with one powder in it what did you use to get them polished like that in one go??? Great vid by the way! I love the black rock with cracks in it.

What’s a good tumbler to get when first starting out? I live on Lake Ontario and really want to get into hunting!
I come up that way every year for the salmon run. We usually spend a day at Selkirk. I don't fish much that day. I end up strolling the beach and going home with a bag of rocks from the shore. I've seen two types of black rocks there. One type polishes very nicely, the other doesn't. It is difficult to pick them out on the beach and don't know which is which until after I tumble them. Anyway, the black rock you have with the quartz lines made me think of that.
That's awesome! I also like to fish for salmon, but only in the smaller tributaries. It gets too crowded for me on the salmon river.

I tumble but obviously it's a long process. So help me understand how.
No problem! Usually rock tumblers come with grit and instructions so that could help you if my explanation doesn't help but ill try my best. Make sure you have some type of Ceramic media to increase surface area of the grit rubbing. Step 1) Use a fine grit and a little bit of water for 1 day, adding a little water at the 12hr mark. Step 2) Change the grit to a pre-polish and repeat. Step 3) Change the grit to a polish and repeat. Step 4) If the rock is porous and still has a lot of cracks and divits, add one drop of dish soap during the last 20 min of polishing to get the polishing compound off of your rocks. BOOM, There you have it. Ill make a tutorial in the future to better explain this visually. Thanks for watching!
The cracked looking rock is a Septarian Nodule (Lightning stone) the white cracks are calcite
So granite stones don’t need a coarse grit tumble? I just started my first tumble today with granite stones and I did use the coarse grit.

Cool! I just bought a tumbler online but everything I read said you can't tumble rocks less than 6 on MOHs scale... but that's clearly not true if you can do river rocks / sedimentary / sandstone as you did?? Most rocks I have are not gems and are not that hard (according to knife scratch test), that I just want to shine up a bit, so now I am more optimistic..
I think those rocks have iron content because of the rust colored spots and that avocado looking rock looks like a picture of galaxies in outer space

HEY! My neighbor is State Police. He'd stopped over with another Officer. I'd started a Tag Sale selling my tumbled rocks. I set off the radiation detector in his cruiser. I remember opening an old safe with stuff inside. I then believe whatever I used for tumbling crap came contaminated from China. He used a device. Paid drastically more for rock's asking price. Asked if he could look around. He's been very nice etc. WHAT'S GOING ON?. What's radioactive in nature and in old mines, old factory runoffs??

personally i don't think these are even worth the shortest wait. with my tumbler its 22 days. for rocks like this.

Yep! There are plenty of spots to go rock hunting from there to Oswego, NY Just make sure you don't take rocks from State parks because that is illegal.
