- I have tumbled so many agates, jaspers, gemstones, rocks, and minerals, but one thing I have never tumbled is marbles! Curious to see if I could transform marbles into beach glass and then restore them to their original shiny state, I decided to give it a try. The results? Absolutely not what I expected!
First off, the tumbler barrel nearly burst! Turns out, marbles off-gas during tumbling, a surprise hazard I hadn't anticipated. Then, the marbles lost a significant amount of their weight, another unforeseen outcome that caught me off guard. But it's the final result that truly shocked me - something happened to the marbles that still amazes me every time I think about it.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! This is SOOOO the type of question I will not rest (or do ANYTHING else) until I find the answer! I was about to go into a Google inspired spiral trying to figure out what would make a tumbler become a "buldger" like a bad can of old beans!

@AgateAriel It reminds me of when I started working in a restaurant, and pretty much tried deep frying *everything*. Co-workers would pass by, see me staring intently into the fryer, and just ask wtf I was deep frying now.
Deep fried spinach, dusted with garlic powder & salt, is amazing.
Deep fried chickpeas/garbanzos are addicting. I just like 'em with salt and they're awesome with a ton of different seasonings.
One experiment that my coworkers would ask me to make was rather surprising. One day I whacked up thin disks of really good Polish kielbasa & deep fried em. They cupped up, so OF COURSE I filled the little meat cups with sour cream & sprinkled with shredded cheddar cheese.
Surprisingly good and lol about once a week I'd end up making a platter.

got some really old pre wwII hinges, locks and screws caked in paint. Using the ceramic tumbling medium all the paint came off, and after a bit of polish they look brand new on my 100 yr old house. solid brass. only 5 days in the tumbler, I probably could have pulled them out by day 3. I now use a 2 barrel set to clean all kinds of hard to clean things.

Glass has tiny air bubbles that get trapped when it's being made, and as they wear down, those bubbles get released. As you mentioned, it's good practice to burp the tumbler every day or so when tumbling glass. It was neat to see what happens when you don't; you're braver than I am. 🤣 Those tiny shiny marbles are soooo stinking cute!

glass doesn't contain enough air to pressurize a container like that. Certainly strange though - It looked similar to a jug I left outside with water in it, the water froze - expanding the jug like that. If it wasn't something like frozen water expansion (or temperature/air expansion) - I'd guess it's some kind of a chemical reaction of some sort causing the bulging. Glass doesn't offgas until it's at molten heat, and even then - it's extremely minimal. (Credentials: I'm a career glass worker)
@@TheGoldPanner Interesting. I always get pressure built-up when I tumble glass. Never enough to make the barrel bulge like hers, but always enough to make a little noise when it opens after 1-2 days, which I've never experienced from rocks (though I know that's possible also).
@@LivetolearnMama I am very curious as to what would be causing it - I'm gonna do some asking around in my glassy groups to see if we can come up with an answer, I'll also chat with some folks at the American Scientific Glass Society and see if there's any literature about that. I'm wondering if some sort of chemical reaction is happening during the tumbling. If I find any solid answers, I'll report back! =)

We used to make "Fried Marbles" with the clear ones in the 70's. You heat the marbles up in a fry pan till hot and then dump them in ice water. It would "craze" them with internal cracks. Some would split completely but you would pick out the best ones to glue those rounded metal snow flake necklace attachments. That's a Mom technical term. Lol. Love your experiment and still love marbles. New subscriber and love your personality. Keep it up.
I am a lampwork glass bead maker and regularly tumble my work for the matt, frosted look. Normally only for a few hours at a time, not weeks on end! I have never tried to get them back to shiny though. That might be an interesting experiment for me too. Thank you so much for showing that it can be done.
Honestly, the prime reason I use my torch these days is to fire polish my fused glass if I've have to sand off a bur or even an edge. *
Though in a few cases, like if I have an enamel decal on it or used iridized glass (which does not take repeated reheating), I have used a slurry with jewelry polish after wet sanding with a 400 grit diamond pad. I can usually get a shine in about 10-15 minutes with elbow grease on a small spot. I honestly think she lost so much glass weight from running the tumbler on the larger grit sizes/earlier stages too long-- she might have been better off going for polishing sooner. I'd love to here what you discover if you do try to polish up some roughed up pieces (and are you using 104 COE or boro? since I have the feeling that would have bearing on it too!) But if you just want to do a single spot (like as a window to the inside if you did ribbons for instance) maybe just skip straight to polish...
*for those not used to hot glass, if you heat the glass just a little, the surface will flow, but not the interior, and you can usually smooth out surface pits from grinding, saw cutting, or sanding while still keeping the shape of the piece. Those surface pits are what diffuses light when it hits, causing the "frosting". Using heat to have the glass smooth itself is referred to as "fire polishing" and with small enough/thin enough pieces can even be done in a candle flame.

I was the champ at my school. A lot of players left crying.
The frosted ones would look really cool in a bowl with some led led lights hidden at the bottom. Maybe a mini string of red xmas lights. Nice job on the video, I had a rock tumbler as a kid and it's something I always wanted to get back into. Thanks for sharing!

I love marbles as much as rocks. I mix them in with my rock collection. I would never tumble marbles. They are just so beautiful. Just a tip, I use a small flat head screw driver to open my top lids. ❤ cool experiment, and fun video. 😊

I use the washer that is between the barrel top and the screw on nut. Thin enough and works pretty well. Saves the fingertips and nails 😊
This is really pretty. My wife would love these on a chain or bracelet.
I think my favorite animal now is an otter. Recently I was invited on a hunt to the Okefenokee swamp. Being that I'm not able to hunt after a brain injury, I just sat beside a small lake while the rest went out hunting. They had a wild hog that has gotten tame , she would flop down beside my chair , and then get up and root around the lake. I watched the gators float around, but the otters would peek up at me , and then just play around all day. It was the best trip , I think I've ever had. When I wasn't petting Willow the hog , she would root at me for attention, and just watching the birds , and other wildlife. But those otters stole the show. This wasn't a zoo , or anything fenced in , it was just nature the God made it. I know this wasn't a comment about stones , but you asked about our favorite animal. God made so many beautiful things that we overlook. We spend lots a $$$$$$ on things to make us happy. Now that I can't go do all the busy things, and just sit out front, and watch the birds fly , sing , and the other animals doing their thing my mind is at peace. Plus the area dogs see me outside , and come hang out as well.
Ii truly miss the "ole days" when we did take time to observe things around us because we didn't have things (phones, etc.) grabbing our attention. We were in awe of so much, small things could make you gasp in wonder....for you may never have seen it before, except through a picture or encyclopedia. Ha! Even going back to school to hear where everybody went in the summer was cool. Glad you got the time to sit and watch the otters.
That was pretty fun. The shine recovery was great and you didn't lose all your marbles, just half! Hahaha!! :)

WOW! I think I like the best when they look more like Sea glass. Just a little bit cloudy since you don't see that in the normal marble. I also love glowing in the dark anything!
I love marbles--they are tiny little works of art. I actually thought those with the spirals inside looked awesome with the beachglass finish!
This was a lot of fun to watch. I was very surprised how much mass was lost in the tumbling process.
And don’t tell my current cats, but one of my previous kitties who was named Doc is my favorite pet ever. He was a little furry menace who was more food motivated than a golden retriever. I taught him how to do some tricks. He slept with me almost every night of the almost 14 years I had him. I miss that little furry guy.

From my childhood: the clear ones with the colorful swirl inside were called Aggies, the totally clear ones were called pureies, the larger ones that you didn’t get were called shooters. That’s all I can remember right now. What a fun video!

@@markwarren3535 I was just coming to add that you could get old ball bearings from auto garages and they were called steelies. My grandpa owned a gas station/garage and we had a large tobbaco tin full of steelies. I wonder whatever happened to them? 🤔

Glass artist here, the "flat marbles" are called gems or (amongst those not trying to sell them) globs. And if you paid more than about $3/lb, you over paid. The lightly tumbled/cloudy like that are also sold, for about $6-8/lb
A few comments. Glass marbles are tumbled in a big tumbler to clean them off before they are packaged. Next time try and split them and see the results, you will be suprised. Get one of those paint can openers from a paint or Home Depot place. They are perfect for pulling off the metal tops and are usually free. Lastly don't tumble them for such a long time unless you are going for making them smaller like you did.

Many years ago during the summer holidays, my sister and I were mooching up and down the lane outside our house when I saw what I thought was a piece of ice. I was so shocked when I picked it up and it burnt my fingers! It turned out to be a clear and white marble that had been chipped all over. We spent the rest of the summer putting marbles up and down the lane trying to make another one, but we never managed it! Sadly I lost 'Icey' many years ago, but maybe I could get a rock tumbler and try to make another one!

Always had an interest in rock tumbling, but never did get into it (no space for a tumbler) and tumbling marbles was something I have wanted to do since I was a kid!

I think the glass might be reacting with the ceramic media , leave that out or any alumina grit and see if it's still bulges.

This was much more fascinating than I'd expected! I thought the post-tumbling marbles looked a lot shinier. However, being so much smaller, they probably transmitted a lot more light, making them look dramatically brighter. Just a thought. I don't know where you live, but if you get to Nebraska, be sure to visit Lee's Marble Museum, York, NE. The owner, Lee, just recently died, so I'm not sure what will happen to his collection, but it is worth a visit! Lee was a knowledgeable, kind, generous, man who had been collecting marbles since he was a little boy. I am so fortunate to have met him a few years ago.
These look so much prettier afterwards! I've always wondered if there was a good way to make those flat pieces more smooth on the back side. Knowing this, will open up the opportunity for more projects where clarity is important. Thanks for doing this!

This was a VERY enjoyable, outside the box video. I used to play with marbles as a kid and the purees (pure eez) were always the favored ones. It just so happens I've found a few of them and the next time I do some tumbling they are going in.

i hope you are aware that glass dust is VERY bad for you to inhale, or ingest, so all that sludge you've made, its is quite hazardous when dry! pls be careful where you dispose of it!

I learned a lot while watching. Hubby use to have a tumbler as a child but lost it in a house fire and it was never replaced, he talks about doing tumbling periodically but he only talks about the noise and making sure it didn't get to hot and catch fire. Looks like fun to me...slow fun, but fun none the less. :)

One could say, this is the tumbler the internet should have had.
How does one know when they are a true rockhound? If you take a bag of marbles on the hunt and every time you pick up a beautiful specimen, you take a marble out of the bag and place it where the specimen was resting. Once you have lost all of your marbles, then you know you are a true rockhound. In your case, you found a different way to lose your marbles. Now you are a true rockhoud!

I really liked this (as a fan of rocks, tumblers, and marbles) but I also got super tense over seeing you open a pressurized container of unknown outgassing without any apparent ventilation/respiration safety haha, glad it wasn't toxic

Your commitment to this experiment was AMAZING! I’ve had my rock tumbler for probably 3 years, and I’ve only tumbled one batch because I’m too impatient. 😂 The little clear marbles remind me of Orbies. Also, I love all “critters”, but my favorite is a good old fashioned mutt dog. ❤

It was my first time here. I love marbles, sea glass and everything beach. Loved the experiment. I have 2 favorite dogs. We have had German Shepards for over 40 years. Caleb is our fifth one and 2nd boy. I had a shipoo and love small dogs as well. I'm glad I found you.

I had a tumbler kit as a kid but didn't know you could get the polish and stuff outside of the kits. That knowledge would have make my childhood rock collection way more interesting.
My older sister had a tumbler when I was growing up, and I loved it! Thank you for reminding me of that joy!

That was fun - thanks for putting in the effort! That was weeks of filming segments for these 20 minutes. Great work on the bench by the way, looks very nice, I like the stain color it came out. You're already in a basement, you don't want it too dark. Thanks for sharing the tumbling fun. And you're correct, the glow in the dark ones are awesome.
These marbles are so cool! I played with the "basic" everywhere you can get them marbles as you described them. The ones with a swirl of green on the inside? That was one of my favorites and I always wanted to get closer to the swirl, and here we are almost 40 years later and your experiment gave me a chance to see what "closer to the swirl" looks like, and you gasped in the video I think about how good it looks. I agree! I did not think they'd get shiny again!

7:20 yep, sanding creates TONS of dust. I would reccomend getting a shop-vac and having it running with the hose near your hands to collect as much dust as you can. Very good that you had a mask on, stuff hurts very badly to breathe in
12:30 That makes sense, glass has little bubbles of gas that form when it cools, and the *very high* heat generated by friction makes the regular air expand too. My workplace has things that offgas and it's incredibly important to make sure things don't just BLOW UP when things expand or escape
Those beads are so frickin shiny and tiny, and somehow look shinier than when you put them in. that's so gorgeous.
