These were part of Sunday tea back in the ‘40s. A van used to come to our village selling cockles, winkles and prawns etc. so Mum used to send one of us down to the van for winkles and cockles, I think it was a pint of each. Sunday treat.

Living in Maine a favorite snack that can be found up and down the coast are pickled winkles or pickled periwinkles or limpets. We bought them often when we went shopping for fresh fiddleheads in the spring

Even the crews on the show Deadliest Catch often during off season they and their families are fishing or gathering other things either for profit or to fill their fridges, freezers or pantry. Another great video, Rik - very nostalgic. Reminds me of when I first started going into pubs in the late '70s and every Friday a chap used to arrive with his basket filled with packets of prawns, mussels, cockles and whelks. It was usually prawns or mussels for me, with vinegar and plenty of white pepper. I'd sometimes go for cockles but can't say I was a big whelk fan. Keep up the good work, mate.
I've never heard of this. Im from southern New England, first thing i thought of was wow! What a nice new england clam chowder and clam cakes and fritters they would make.😁 but i make quick refrigerator pickles this very same way!🎉
I live on a beach with an abundance of clams. I soak them in buckets of seawater for two days, .changing the water regularly, to clean them. Then I steam them open, shell them, and eat them in various preparations. My dogs love them too.

Try apple cider vinegar with the mother. It’s very good for you. Over here in the US we have a brand called Bragg’s, it’s lovely. I get it by the gallon. I pickle almost everything veg and I make kimchi. 😊

Right up to the 1950s on weekends in London, the' Shrimp and Winkle Man' used to come up the road with his horse and cart and sell his wares including cockles, in measuring jugs. Take your own bowl. That would be Saturdays or Sundays tea. Getting your winkle out with a pin and dipping them in an eggcup of peppered vinegar and eating them with brown bread and butter. Cockle sandwiches. Those were the days. Where did you buy your boiled clams, Rik? I do miss my shellfish.
I too can remember going 'Doon the water' and having cockles and my favorites the wee whelks and a pin. Served in a cup from a stall on the water front. Wonder if they still have them? I remember the cockle man coming round the pubs, cockles, muscles, shrimps etc then crab sticks were added. Do you pressure can or water bath can. If water bath, does the ph have to be fairly acidic?
Hi Rik. I do a lot of preserves with garden produce, biggest crop is always beetroot but I always put the jars through the pressure cooker for a minute or two and they will keep for at least 18 months. Are you going to process your jars before you lay them down? As an aside my tight wad Yorkshire mate always bought whelks from the cockle man as they were better value as he could chew one for half an hour. Whelk recipe Rik? Serious question: I've never pickled anything before, How do I know the jars are clean enough to add the ingredients to pickle. That's the one thing that has stopped me from doing this.

Back in the day, I used to play gigs in all the social clubs around Northern England and beyond and often saw a 'Kershaw's Cockle Man' walking around the audience with his tray of goodies. Sometimes, the singer say of the mic "Ladies and gentlemen, lets give a big round of applause to the Cockle Man" (they'd often be embarrassed but sometimes they sold more cockles as a result).
OMG...that stuck a memory....my mum loves pickled cockles....personally I wouldnt touch them....not sure they are all that popular these days (at least in Australia)

Sainsburys have 90g fresh cockels for 2.75. Many have said Doncaster market has fresh.
No Sainsburys here in Thailand but I've checked and it seems they are readily available in supermarkets here@@BackyardChef

I remember the cockle man coming round the pubs, cockles, muscles, shrimps etc then crab sticks were added. Do you pressure can or water bath can. If water bath, does the ph have to be fairly acidic?

I do a lot of preserves with garden produce, biggest crop is always beetroot but I always put the jars through the pressure cooker for a minute or two and they will keep for at least 18 months.
Are you going to process your jars before you lay them down?
As an aside my tight wad Yorkshire mate always bought whelks from the cockle man as they were better value as he could chew one for half an hour.

Back in the day, I used to play gigs in all the social clubs around Northern England and beyond and often saw a 'Kershaw's Cockle Man' walking around the audience with his tray of goodies. Sometimes, the singer say of the mic "Ladies and gentlemen, lets give a big round of applause to the Cockle Man" (they'd often be embarrassed but sometimes they sold more cockles as a result).

Lovely, thanks for reminding me about the late night cockle man, I guess now no more? Looked up the difference (google) some sites say clams are sweeter some say cockles are sweeter! But all agree you can eat clams raw but not cockles. Lovely thanks.
