Your video helped a lot. Fixed my odo that’s 35yrs old. I tested my work with a drill in reverse driving the speedo connection with a #2 square tip.

Use two teaspoons to lever the needle off without danger of snapping the hardened shaft. Piece of paper underneath so it doesn't mar the face.

dbeierl great suggestion, that seems much safer.

@@legoguysrepairanything7646 also if you notice where the needle settled -- there's a tiny white tickmark at the edge of the face to show where it's supposed to.

    Hi!
I have an old -88 Memphis that that the odometer stopped working during repair at the mechanic. They fixed it but the needle now moved up and down and now it is not working. Will give it a try with the help of your videos. Best wishes from Sweden

Thank #$%^& for people like you, and the internet. I just bought an 89 jetta for my daughter, and we have to track the mileage for her insurance purposes (safe driver program thing). I called in the mileage last week, and then as I am driving, realize...It isnt tracking miles. So I have the cluster out, and will be watching this vid this week to attack the repair. IM only to the point where you have the tach out at this point, so Ill stop there and return this week. cant wait, and Ill let ya know how it goes...

Hey mate. Had some problems during reassembly, kind of spelled out below. Do you know if this is fixable?
When I took mine apart, after the faceplate was off, and we removed the four screws to be able to lift up on the red gear and slide it back...my whole fromt portion came free from the base. I watched you do the whole repair as a semi-assembled unitecause the camera had shut off). I never saw your section removed, even though you mentioned it did, in fact, remove. So I have done all my repairs, but when I put the faceplate back on, I can push the needle on, but if you lift the needle to try to get it over the seating peg, it just pulls the spring though the faceplate hole. No clue whats going on.
There is a little pin that it leads to on the backside of the clear portion/numbers, and it appears to seat into the speedo mechanism below that. But no matter how much I push and tap, it isn't 'seating', This would be easier with pics, sorry its so confusing. Here is a vid showing the needle slop. I know it wasnt this way before, because it was solid when removing the speedo needle.

Okay, I'm not sure exactly what's gone on here. It almost sounds like the needle spindle came free of - or possibly broke off of - the circular metal assembly behind it. In the footage just before the cameras cut out, I did, in fact, say that the whole clear faceplate thing comes free - but as I looked at it (while the cameras had turned off), I figured out that it does not actually come free without taking the tension spring ("clock spring") off of the needle spindle, something I would rather not do. I guess what I'm saying is... if you can't get that needle to pop back into place in the assembly behind the clear bit... you might be looking for a new speedometer :( I've never experienced this type of issue with these speedometers before.

OK. This is what I was afraid of. Sadly, It was initially fixed...But I put the silver gear on backwards (This made the ODO work but not the trip meter). So in order to do it 'right', I decided to re-so it. So I tapped the red gear/stem out, turned the silver gear around, and reinstalled it...that was when the two parts separated. Too many taps of the hammer I guess. Thanks for the help. Off to the internet to source one.

How much would you charge to fix the odometer on a MK4 Golf. The part that shows the miles doesn't display and I would like to know actual mileage

I've never worked on a mk4 Golf cluster before, but I can imagine that the part would be replaceable. Does that screen show anything, at all?

Can you fix a 2006 Jetta TDI transmission solenoid? After my car warms up it down shifts to first and won't leave first gear.

I've never seen one of these; I would expect this to be some sort of sensor or perhaps mechanical failure. You may need to replace the part rather than try to repair it. :(

I cant believe people actually pay you to beat their gauges with a ballpeen hammer. Watching you remove that needle was painful to watch. Oh I like how your camera had issues at a very crucial spot. And btw try to keep the camera on the item your fixing.

Thanks for the feedback. My camera setup at the time left much to be desired, and I was pretty camera nervous as well - being one of the earlier videos that I made.
