The dress looks great on you but, if it means you’ll get more wear out of it, go for overdying. A video of that would be interesting. How would the dye take on the htv?

You could dye it all over with a light or medium gray, then play with some of the ice dye techniques you’ve used before. If it doesn’t work, it can go all black anyway!

Fun fact, in Old Norse things we think of as gray (like smoke) were often described as a specific blue, one associated with nonliving things. Table-relevant, sort of. Unless it's alive...

Overdying the dress sounds interesting, though my first thought of a sanguine ombre from the hem up and the shoulders down might look a little... gory.

The stuff you do with darts... it's like wizardry to me! It reminds me of those questions involving geometric rotation, or 2D nets of 3D shapes, requiring a type of visualisation and spatial awareness that my brain just could never wrap itself around. I'm a non-sewer, but enjoy watching your makes - and particularly listening to your commentary 😊

I really like this idea, might give the illusion of me having hips without having to fuss with my actual Swiss Waist! I'm thinking my kirtle pattern might be a good candidate for this.
Love the little beret you made to match! I think that's becoming my favourite "I need a hat to wear with this outfit, a ballcap won't do, and I have this leftover fabric..." hat style.
So I acquired my 6th sewing machine in July (a late 60's/early 70's Kenmore) and almost came home from my vacation with a 7th (50's/60's Singer that was my husband's family sewing machine, his grandmother was a seamstress, I came home wiht some other stuff from her stash too) but I was a good human and left it there while I do some research on how much it would cost to replace the motor if a good cleaning and lube job doesn't make it work again. While on vacation I made a wearable mockup swimsuit for my husband and one for myself based on one I've had since my teens (the top is princess seamed, go figure), and before I ran out of elastic thread, I got his final suit finished. And I still have so much swimsuit fabric left... but I've figured out how I want to alter the pattern to make mine fit better and a few things for the next one I make him... for mine I have to alter the angle the shoulder straps are at so they don't fall down while I swim, and make some changes to the shape of the front of the bottom piece so it covers a litte more territory that I didn't necessarily have when I was a teenager, also considering adding a ruffly skirt that goes up over the hips and hides...things... and for his, I need to make the front a little wider and not bother with any lining in the back panel as all it does is hold more water when he's trying to dry off.
This afternoon, I'm off to the danger zone, to the fabric store for more elastic thread (my 1960's Universal mostly behaved enough to get all the swimsuits done) and maybe a hump-jumper since the biggest problems I had with the swimsuits was going over the thick spots where hems met seams, it made the tension all wonky for a few stitches and a friend who sews introduced me to the concept. And they've got a 50% off sale on anything in the clearance pile.... so... we'll see how many willpower checks I fail and how much stuff I come home with.

I live in the northwest UK, right near the main train line between London (2.5 hrs from me, direct) and Glasgow/Edinburgh (2.25 hrs from me, direct). You can buy a Victorian terraced 3-bedroom house in my town for £250k, and there are still plenty that are *not* ruined by the dreaded everything-grey flippers. London and most of the South are wildly expensive, but there are still plenty of other places that are very affordable.
However, I remember how expensive the visa process was, and I don't know what it would be like for your job -- plus moving here cost me about $7500 (which my employer reimbursed about half of, thankfully, but that's not helpful for you!) and I didn't have pets (I know it's possible to bring them along, just more expensive). Plus, if you're an introvert, it's really quite hard to move to a new anywhere, let alone a completely new culture!
I can just imagine how much you might be able to raise for those closing costs if you sell some of your wardrobe. Your pieces are so beautiful. Plus, perhaps we could help by donating for those HTV downloads? You should get paid for your time and labour. 💙🖤

I was looking for similar houses in 2018 and found very few of them that The Mad Updaters hadn't got their bland, neutral hands on. Much of the updating was done at the behest of estate agents so that the place would sell more quickly, but then every place looks like everybody else's place. At that point my long-term strong impression that most humans value conformity even if they don't realise it became a conviction. I did buy a house built in 1935 but to an older-style plan, and decided that returning the ghastly white painted woodwork to stained and varnished normal *and* putting something like a real colour on the walls would be retirement projects. Good luck with your search, and you may have to "settle" the way I did.
Oh, yes, your project: marvelous as always. I've referred your channel to a number of like-minded people, and I hope it's helped.

The dress looks gorgeous, and I do think the white is very striking, but if you're not going to wear it if it's white, then you should definitely dye it something more *you* feeling!

  • @paulamiller8386

This is a lovely dress and if you can keep the white, white then great. All my white garments end up being dyed. White is not the best on me and usually ends up greying. Dye refreshes tired garments.
I don't know what people are saying about your table. I can see it is blue. They need to sort the colour balance on their devices.
And if you do decide to come and live in the UK, you will be very welcome. ❤

You could have spare rooms for people to stay a couple of days to pay and work with you on pattern drafting or you to help them measure themselves and make their blocks. I'd love to do that! I feel like I can maybe help a little with the house search but only if you're still looking at CT as an option. As someone who regularly did Denver to Hartford CT at least twice every three months from 2012 to 2017 (and still does it occasionally to go back and see my friends) here is my advice. There is one flight a day from DIA to Hartford. Leaves Denver at about 5:45 pm arrives in CT at around 11:45-midnight. Then leaves CT the next day anywhere from 5:45 am to like 6:30 am to arrive at DIA at around 10:45 am by the time you de-board. Right now United holds that route (used to be Southwest but they lost it in 2019). You can get a round trip ticket for closer to $600 (still a lot especially if you fly into laguardia instead) if you book in advance and fly in on a Tuesday or Wednesday.
FInding Victorians in CT right now is hard not because they aren't there but because they aren't really labeled well on real estate website. Like there are 2 ornate victorian houses (no idea how modern they are on the inside or the cost) up for sale in my little suburban town that I drove past 4 days ago but you'd never know because they're not on Zillow. Also the housing market in CT is hell right now because everyone is trying to buy up a house before school starts at the end of the month. This is probably true for most of New England at the moment.

Definitely dye it. This is the first thing I have seen you make that I don't like on you. The white is too stark? Not sure, but perhaps a wash of pale, pale grey, to go with the flock designs. Beautiful silhouette as always. Good luck with the house hunting. Here in New Zealand house prices are ridiculous. A simple and small house will start around $400,000. And that is in towns where there is little in the way of amenities or jobs. Bigger cities, start with at least a million in your pocket, and small expectations.

  • @ClaireFrechette
    @ClaireFrechette Місяць тому

Re the house-hunting, since you said you're considering MA: as someone MA-raised, I would actually highly suggest looking at the suburbs surrounding Worcester, rather than those around Boston. The house prices are significantly lower and there are far fewer of the terrible "flipped" Victorians and older houses and more of the existing older houses. My best friend grew up in an 1800s house north of Worcester that had been renovated minimally (just enough for electricity, plumbing, and structural integrity), and it was absolutely gorgeous

P.S. If you're visiting MA, definitely stop by the Fabric Place Warehouse in Framingham; it's absolutely lovely, and the staff are great.

I wish I could land in MA, but I'm pretty priced out of there currently unfortunately 😒

@@TheClosetHistorian Yeah, the housing prices here are absolutely nuts. I'm desperately hoping the market will be better by the time I'm ready to buy a house 😬 Good luck with the hunt, though!

ce the shade is obtained, mix it with a little boiled linseed oil to make it a yogurt-like texture, just fluid enough to be diluted. In a metal container it is necessary to prepare its proportions, i.e. 1/3 boiled flaxseed oil for 2/3 of Varsol. You can even go there 1/4 oil and 3/4 Varsol (in Canada it is a diluent-style hydrocarbon with paint less toxic than turpentine). Stir well with a stick and go quietly so as not to dilute your dye too much. We must not forget that there are pigments that are more siccative than others. Cobalts dry faster while blacks delay drying as well as reds. I put example in a liter 3-5 drops of cobalt siccative to speed up drying. And here is simply a homemade dye at a fraction of the price,! Apply and wipe sooner or later for the depth of color! You can also use pigments, but you have to make sure that they are crushed fairly fine (as in oil tubes), otherwise it takes a wheel to crush them well with a little oil. Do not forget that the binder is oil, if you dilute too much with Le Varsol the dye holds less well! Good dye!

Just to say a costuming friend has relocated recently from the US to the UK and didn't quarantine her dogs as she followed all the rules to be able to avoid it. And secondly I've no idea if it would help with the motivation to sort and list your things for sale but you could see it as raising funds for an east coast visit for viewings? Looking forward to hearing the BToD story!

Gathering on inset sleeves is a godsend. What color are you considering for the over-dye??

I really love this one, though I can absolutely see the case for dyeing it. White is a hard dress colour to reach for when black (or grey) is around. What colour do you think you would go with instead?

For the dart appearing to be larger, there are a couple of things at play. First, you’ve combined two darts. So the internal angle of the large dart is the same as adding the two smaller ones together. It appears much larger because the radius is larger. Imagine a 6” pie. 1/6 of that pie has an angle of 60 degrees. But the legs, the distance from the center to the edge is only 3”. In contrast, 1/6 of a 12” pie is still 60 degrees, but the radius is 6”, and the piece of the pie is much bigger despite both pieces having the same shape. Hopefully that helps. If not… well, it’s been a long time since I tutored anyone in math! 😅

I wonder if you could take a fabric marker to the zipper on the red part.

I think the dress looks great, but would enjoy watching your process of overdying it. Wondering if the blue patterning table of doom is trialing an early Halloween costume by masquerading as mysterious grey stained prop for a fall look book.

Your new dress is beautiful on you. What color would you over dye your dress? I could never wear white very well. The worst color on me is yellow. I look very sick in yellow. Will the decorations that you ironed on to your dress come off in the dye bath; or, will the decorations take dye and look a lot different?

Where are you getting your pins these days? I'm having a hard time finding any that are sharp! Any help you can give would be useful! Love this dress! I'm finally getting the hang of switching darts around and that's all because of your wonderful videos! Thanks so much for all your teaching!!!
