- Lockdowns may end, but introversion is forever.
I finally made a nice long slightly over dramatic robe for lounging around the house. This was rather a quick and easy project to sew together, but it did eat up a lot of fabric of course with this swooshy length. Now I can creepily sit in the dark while I edit with a cozy hood to keep my ears warm.

But wait there's more! A PO BOX finally wahoo!
First, a disclaimer: So many of you have kindly offered to send me things, including vintage items you may have inherited, and I am so honored you would think of me and of course I do adore vintage treasures, however, unfortunately I only have so much storage space currently! So there is a chance that if something just wont work for me, or doesn't fit me etc, that I may not be able to keep all of your lovely things. Please only send things if you are okay with the possibility that I may donate items I just cannot keep. If you would prefer I put things that I can't keep into the TCH Etsy shop to help raise funds for me and the channel, please specify this in a note or letter in your parcel. Thank you so much!

This robe looks like something Narcissa Malfoy would wear for a lazy day around the manor.
Great reference!
+1
Exactly my thoughts! This has been added to my references for wizarding world fashion history
I'm also an introvert, nocturnal, and saw on Facebook the quote "I was an introvert, now I'm feral and must be lured out with treats."
I can relate to that all too bloody well! My sons got me moving once by one making the sign of the cross and the other holding out a chocolate bar. They wanted dinner.
This is perfect! I am as well. I was very content during lock down. ❤😂
"I don't even know any people!" Same haha
You finished the patterns and my brain went *✨ quilted fabric ✨
I may need a Slytherin monk house coat for checking the mail because my neighbors need to think I am weirder than they already do.
If a black and green house cost makes you weird in the eyes of your neighbors, you must live in HOA hell.
"I'd have to get fit, to get fit" - Never did I think I'd hear something I related to as much honestly.
I'm far too out of shape...to try getting in shape 😩😅
Um if Angela Clayton can draw on her silk with sharpies you can for sure use washable crayola marker, the sewing police will not come to get you❤
I've been doing that since circa 1995...water soluable felt tip pens, crayolas, soft (2B-6B) lead pencils...I just use whatever works best on a fabric. Works perfectly fine, most of the time. If in doubt, I'll just try it on a piece of scrap fabric before I commit.
I usually leave wider seam allowances and fit as I go (no mockup), so precise markings are a must for me.
I mark my darts with slashes and a spike/tailor's awl unless I'm using really open weave fabric. I loathe tailor's tacks. I'll be honest and say I'm not a big fan of most hand sewing. Sewing on buttons is my least favourite part of just about any project, except for hemming by hand. It's just boring! I can have the best podcast in the world and I'm still bored! So yes, any kind of marking method that will work and won't be visible and won't destroy your fabric is worth trying
It's easier for me to avoid markers than remember whether they say "washable" to mean it will last through washings or "washable" to mean it will wash out. I mean, if I stop and think for an instant, I know it's the second, but my brain still does this jangly thing where I keep thinking it could be the first. So I draw on the fabric using chalk. Sensible people would use unambiguous terms like "water-resistant" and "water-soluble".
@@zrebbesh I use chalk or a cheap little bar of soap
I draw on my fabric with sharpies
Immediately imagines this, but like..... McGonagall's tartan dressing gown 0.0
I have a mighty need.
This is what I call a real dressing gown..Long enough to touch the floor and keep all of you warn not these silly three quarter length ones you get now days..I love it and the colours you used ..it’s beautiful and beautifully made too 🥰
I’m lucky that I’m short, I guess. Because those 3/4 length gowns are 7/8 on me. Which is better.
@@katherinemorelle7115 As a tall person, i find that most clothes in stores are made for shorter people. This happens with sleeves most of the times - i have long arms and legs. Long sleeves are a real issue for me. Sometimes i envy shorter people.. But then, i have the upper hand at reaching that higher shelf without having everything falling on me... :/
@@sapphirecamui6447 Low hanging lamps though... They're a menace))
Yes....yes....and thrice yes!
Thank you Christine!
Love the tight sleeves. I don't understand the current trend to have them so loose...they just end up in my coffee or dragging over my toast when I reach for things 😉
@Lavinia Whateley this happens to me at least once a week!!
Also the mess and risk when trying to cook breakfast n baggy sleeves when you're still half asleep.
THIS IS EXACTLY WHY I WENT WITH A VINTAGE PATTERN TOO
You look like you are part of a glamorous cult and I’m living for it
damn, the dress clips are back and they are next level
These ones are indeed, too good 😭 An Etsy find from 2020!
The idea of a handmade cozy Jedi robe is sooooo tempting....
"Something Maleficent would wear if she had a cold" is very much my desired aesthetic.
Something to throw on if the Detectives should drop by about the missing neighbor hood children.
Exactly 🧛♀️
I can't explain why, but hearing the word monastic brought me a lot of joy!
One doesn't get to use it often 😂
I saw the thumbnail and my brain went 'I need this'. Perfect!
Hi, from a quilter, the easiest way to sew with big prices of fabric that are quite weighty, is to find a table with a slippery surface and put it on the left hand side of your sewing machine table at 90 degrees to it. This then takes the weight of the item, and also let's the fabric slide along as you stitch it.
Also the handstitch that you are using at about 36 minutes in, is called a ladder stitch. I know you say that you are never sure of what each of the handstitches are called, now you know one of them. Finished gown looks fab by the way.
Thank you Claire!
Hi, Claire. Have you seen the Burberry prorsum quilted velvet blanket coat? Cara delevigne was wearing it. Would you know what kind of batting they used or if they used any at all? Also, would quilting velvet on a heavier woolen fabric give me "tight" quilts without much sag? I'm a guy and I wanna make one with gold silk thread on black velvet with leather binding.
Definitely saving this for later! A “someday” project of mine is a dramatic semi-sheer dressing gown with elaborate feather trim on the sleeves and hem. I was gifted several yards of it a few years ago, and it deserves just the right project.
That sounds gorgeous!
That would be gorgeous, but if I wore one like that my kitties would attack my every step.
Love it! You had me laughing my butt off when you said, " I don't invite people over; I don't know anyone"!! Me either. :D
xoxo's Sandie
Thank you Sandie! 😂
Carol Burnett's two part sketch series Went With The Wind covered it just about as well, and with better costumes. You know the one
I know the one! I laughed so hard that I had a stitch in my side! Bless Bob Mackey for THAT one! The line was just begging for that costume.
Please make pajamas for the lovely house coat you made. 😚
great idea!
The Drama! The Drape! This is so fabulous, very Old Hollywood meets Gothic Horror. And it will be cozy too, with the flannel lining!
Thank you Avery! The flannel is suuuuper soft! 😍
This aesthetic is absolutely immaculate 💚
Thank you!
It's glorious! So glam and vampy. (And I'm always glad to know I'm not the only one who adds "boop" as a random sound effect to things.)
Thank you Elizabeth!
Now I want a vampy goth glam housecoat to swoosh around in. 🥰
The mismatched socks are making me so happy :D This robe looks extremely snuggly, I think I'll make one for myself as well
Thanks Harriet! Can't have matching socks 😂
20:15 Darts, "they are a POINT of confusion."
Love the unintentional pun!
On that looks so comfy.... I need this in my lounge life. I think a large patch pocket could be useful. Love the colors.
I like the idea of pockets as I have to hunt around for my phone and other accoutrement.
Thank you Hannah!
Merlin gave Mad Madam Mim a virus during the wizard's duel in The Sword in the Stone, so it stands to reason that Maleficent could catch one too. 🦠🤪
Wow I need a robe like this. I also just realized what I did wrong with the sleeve on a kimono sleeve tunic I made, needed to walk those top and bottom seams! Will rewatch what you did there.
Would be perfect for chilly Michigan mornings! Thanks for the great video.
Will I ever be making this, probably not. Did I love watching every minute of you making it... ABSOLUTELY YES!! ☺
Thank you Madison!
You sewers that create your own patterns and resulting visions of loveliness mystify me
Very Narcissa Malfoy and kind of like Minerva McGonagall too, love it!
I always sew over my pins and I’ve had hardly any needle breaks, so it’s worth it for that little bit of time saving 😆
I avoid sewing over my pins by not doing a lot of pinning :D
Never apologize for rewatching His Girl Friday!
Nice. The only thing I’d add is some deep side pockets to keep hands toasty.
You look gorgeous!♡
Yess
Agree
Thank you Fiona!
I am still working out how I want to do my robe. I just know that it must have pockets. Might do a quilted one.
The only thing I can think of that this divine robe needs is POCKETS. Beautifully done.
Thank you Judy!
GWTW is worth watching once, cringely. Then immediately watch the Carol Burnett parody...which never fails to make me laugh until I cry.
I keep thinking your green fabric is velvet. This is so nice.... I took a martial arts class, for 40 min of a 60 min class we exercised so do it...thanks for the video.
Thank you Deborah! The green has a lovely mottled print that makes it look more like velvet or low pile faux fur without the hassle of sewing with either so that was perfect 😅
This green colour is STUNNING!
I love green 💚💚💚
Your creative mind speaks to my heart 🖤💚🖤
It looks gorgeous, Bianca. With a new dump of snow on the hills here and your easy to follow instructions, I might just have to make for myself.
Thank you! Stay cozy from that snow!
This robe is a one-way ticket to cozyville, I want one! Enjoy your writing time! 🥰
Thank you Penny!
Stunning outfit and gorgeous colour, that really suits you. Love the black dress and clips, classic!
Thank you Susan!
"I will probably end up tripping on it" just get a pair of those house heels with the fluff on the toes and you'll be fine. It'll be great, you can use it to cover your feet when you're sitting.
Just be sure to hold it up as you go up or down the stairs. I have a long cloak that on occasion tries to do me a serious mischief!
I wish I could find anyone that made nice ones! No one makes good ones anymore, they are all super cheap and cheesy 😩
@@TheClosetHistorian ain't that the truth!
Love your videos. You are an inspiration. I drafted a bodice block (first time ever) because I saw your video, & happened to have a copy of the Patternmaking textbook by Helen Joseph-Armstrong. I saw how you drew it out to fit your own measurements. Your step-by- step clear explanations gave me the confidence to think "Let"s give it a try"
Thank you Siobhan! I hope the process went all right, the challenge is worth it!
I love watching you pattern draft and alter. That is the one part of sewing that I am the worst at and you make it look so effortless. I have always taken commercial patterns and altered them in strange ways to make my garments look exactly they way I want them to. I definitely need to invest the time to make some basic body blocks 💖
This is what I've always done with patterns too! I'm really looking forward to more videos about how to draft, it doesn't quite make sense in my brain yet but these videos are definitely helping!
Thank you Rachel! If you have successfully Frankensteined a pattern to your liking, you can pattern draft I promise!
Look forward to the dart special. Only just getting back into clothes making after many many years.(circa 80s)
Love this. Will definitely be making one soon
Thank you Jo!
I work and live in a finished basement, too! It’s at least 8 degrees F cooler than the rest of the house, which is wonderful in summer! Love the beautiful housecoat!
Thank you! I just had to block my air con vent into my basement office because I was freezing down here 😅
@@TheClosetHistorian , we are both in the Basement Gnomettes Club.
I’d totally wear this out
Your lounge robe is fantastic! I hope it gets a lot of enjoyable wear.
Thank you!
His Girl Friday is obviously the superior choice.
Came out great! Enjoyed seeing how you drafted that hood. I've been obsessed with GWTW since I was a kid, and yes, its very long. About 4 hours. I've seen it hundreds of times, but as a busy mom now, I rarely have time to watch it all at once. I have to break it up haha! Incidentally, in the movie, Scarlett wears several amazing bed gowns/dressing gowns. Walter Plunkett, the costume designer, was a genius and it's fun to see all of the costumes, including the dressing gowns/robes.
Thank you! Tempted to add a hood onto everything now of course 😅
I've listened to this video a dozen times thanks to UA-cam auto playing it.
Now that I'm done making vests for my husband and my son (your videos helped me understand darts which helped for my kid, who has my shoulders) I can make things for me! First up might just end up being a robe
I swear, last night I was dreaming of having a long black house coat that had to have a hood. So I look it up today, I see your video, and it is exactly the house coat I was dreaming!
OMG I love your look today -- the hair style, those gorgeous broaches (pins? clips?), that neckline. You always look fabulous (even in a T-shirt) but I was instantly struck this combination today.
I think, I remember those from another video (not recently, though). I think, they're actually decorative shoe clips. Not 100% sure, though.
Thank you Ruth! They are dress clips, a wonderful style of jewelry mostly lost to time that I made a whole rant about once 😅 ua-cam.com/video/pFjY7aFHamo/v-deo.html
I love the cozy flannel being on the inside. Lovely! I want one! Especially love the length and the double overlay in front of the wrap style. Would be heavenly in my room over the garage- where it’s always too cold in the winter.
Thank you Christine! The flannel wasn't very soft at first, until I pre-washed the fabric and it came out of the drier soooo soft 😍
I love watching you pattern draft, it makes so much sense and I always learn something, this has been added to my ToMake list 🖤
Thank you Rachael!
Loving the purple in your hair! Thank you for this. It gets me inspired to continue working on my projects
Her hair looks amazing! That’s what I was saying right before I read your comment.
Thank you Rose!
Sewing is life and this is both sassy and cozy.
Thanks Josie! ✨
I don’t understand why UA-cam only suggested your Chanel now to me, and not a year ago ! I’m going to have to bindge watch all of your videos, and and prepare my fabric stach to remake all of it 😍 thanks so much, amazing content 👌👌👌
Thank you Juliette!
Thank you for demonstrating how to fix the length of the back sleeve! I was facing this problem with even the short sleeve version of the all-in-one sleeve and I just gave up and fudged it, but now I'll know how to do it correctly!
I think it happens whenever the front and back armscyes of the original pattern are a different length, but sometimes bodies are not symmetrical of course, so I just found this works as a work around 😅
A revelation!
So nice love the colors. You make the most beautiful things. Always love to see the finished product. You must never need clothes. You must just sew whatever you need. So much nicer then the store items.. Thanks for showing us.
Thank you Sandra!
Something that Maleficent would wear when she has a cold LOL I love your commentary
Unrelated but I love your oil slick scissors 😍 I had this playing as I cleaned my sewing area and it was so nice to listen to. Odd note, my grandmother taught me to sew and she always told me to press darts outward not towards center? I'm really wondering why now 🤔 I may call her later lol
I got told to do darts this way, too (by my mum)! Would also like to know why - either direction.
Was taught the same but from UA-cam and not any family member cause I'm self taught.. So if either of you get an answer do share :)
I have just always been taught in my various pattern drafting and sewing classes that they are to be pressed towards the center and horizontal darts are to be pressed down. If you haven't encountered any problems, I figure it must not matter that much! Sometimes they are pressed in other directions for style reasons, as in when they are used as external darts for fun like I did in my leopard print dress earlier this year ua-cam.com/video/OI9k1tj9o5Q/v-deo.html
@@TheClosetHistorian Oh I don't think it does matter that much in most cases. I just thought it was interesting and was curious if it was a regional thing or maybe a generational thing? My grandmother learned in high school but she also used the little pattern wheel doodads and loose chalk on her patterns when marking stuff so I wondered if it was outdated lol 🤷♀️ Nobody else in my family sews so I have no clue if it's a Floridian preference
literally yesterday i was talking about wanting to make a goth housecoat and then youtube recs this. serendipity
I really appreciate that you show your pattern manipulation from basic blocks. I will check your existing videos but I would love a video focussed on your basic block library.
Gremlin robes are the best kind of robes... This one looks super comfy, I love it! I was 32 (like a couple months ago) before I watched Gone with the Wind. It was very long, and the only thing I liked were two of the dresses. And maybe watching them run in these ridiculously huge dresses.
Thank you Sarah! I just fear my more modern attention span would never last it ha 😂
The most divine witchy house coat to grace the halls of Hogwarts, or indeed anywhere. Your videos and you are so inspiring Bianca that even I, who was so bad at patchwork had to leave the class, am now making patterns and clothes. Ok, so easy patterns, but hey that great for me!!! Big hugs for ou and your cats and all your inspiring help xx🐈
Thank you Tracy! I'm glad you are getting the hang of everything!! 💚
Goth Glam. The ROBE says it all. Very nice and thank you.
Thank you Barbara!
This is fabulous! Learned so much, as usual, and totally in awe of your knowledge base and teaching capacity. Not to mention the stunning result! Thanks Bianca. You make all these alterations suddenly seem doable; and inspiring.
Thank you Kaytie!
I freaking love your style and your videos. It's so inspiring to see you make things and I actually feel like I could too just by watching lol
Thank you Cecelia!
I happen to be a black belt in taekwondo and used to teach classes to all ages. Im now trying to learn how to sew, starting at the bottom. I assure you that you can indeed do martial arts!! WE all have to start somewhere
The housecoat came out beautifully. I love the flannel you chose because it come across almost like a velour. Also, I may need to now make a Ravenclaw house coat because of this. And last but not least, I am going to comment about the fact that your socks don't match. :D I love it. As long as my socks are the same style, I don't care if they are the same color.
Thank you Flynn! No matching socks left, they are both from the same bunch and that has to be enough indeed 😂
Oh my goodness, I can't sew for shit but this is the content and new hobby I need in my life.
You can do it!!
The robe is fabulous! Unfortunately my first thought at reveal was "but... there's no pockets?". Being allergy prone myself, I NEED pockets for tissues at all times 🤣
Very comfy and goth.
Also - regarding "looking like Gone With The Wind", it is a very very long movie. Just look up Carol Burnett "Went With The Wind", and you'll get the idea. Excellent Bob Mackie designs.
That looks so darn cosy!
I love this. One of my goal sewing projects when I'm a bit more confident is a fancy Victorian/18th century banyan style dressing gown/house coat, with frog closures and maybe quilted (my house is old and gets really cold come winter). I've always pictured it in a similar colour scheme to yours, black with dark green (or maybe dark blue) lining and trim.
Thank you Edward! Banyan are so stylish!
Looks like you are at peak cozy.
I don't even know any people... I felt that!!
...Wow! I have been looking for a vintage house coat, like this, for YEAAARSSSS, okay!??... They are NO WHERE to be found!!!!!... The majority of people, our age, don't even KNOW, what a house coat is... they think it's a bathrobe!!! 😑 You are a gem!
I cleeeeked
ETA Very witchy (and fetching)! I think you’ll get a lot of use out of it....
Thank you Susan! I have already been wearing it a bunch!
Star Wars T-shirts and Obi Wan’s Jedi Cloak!
I have been meaning to buy a robe for like three years now, and seeing as its coming into winter in my hemisphere, I might as well give sewing one for myself a go...
Not gonna lie, this reminded me of housecoats that my grandma had in abundance at her home)) Very Soviet Russia, in all their glorious buttons and ties and lapels, with patches that didn't match))
Until this video I didn't realise that I missed the one I wore basically until graduation. Very comfy compared to my now usual old t-shirt and old skirts/trousers.
As a Slytherin I approve of this housecoat. This turned out looking so good. :}
Thank you!
I was getting Slytherin vibes too, so I’m so glad you mentioned it!
Bravo!!!
Thank you Kathy!
i saw the title and SCREAMed! *chants* goth housecoat goth housecoat goth housecoat
Oh my 2 x 5 yards of fabric. That's dauting, cost wise, for sure. Lovely result, though. Very 'Slytherin monk', indeed.
I like to wear a long teddy fleece robe at home in winter, too. So comfy and saves me a ton on heating cost (in Germany, utilities are basically a second rent, because energy prices are so high).
Thank you Rara! Yes the cost was why I couldn't quite stretch to using a sateen this time 😅
This reminds me so much of McGonagal.
I love the modern flair you've added to your look with the violet highlighting in your hair! You look very glam! Have you ever considered creating any clothing inspired by Edward Gorey? YOU have the talent and the style to carry that off!!
Thank you Mary! I tend to just make thing I want practically and feel are missing from my wardrobe perhaps, and then for themed lookbooks maybe!
I just switched back from Alexander McQueen to watch this from the beginning... I was finally motivated to tape my generic bodice block together in preparation for the mountain climb needed for fitting it to myself. I’m not confident about fittings but it’s just old sheets that are not useful in my house... should be compostable after they live out their short lives as toiles.
An underground closet historian. Yeah! I'm in, lol This is my first visit to your channel. Can't wait to see what you've got
Thank you Angela!
