  • In this episode, my local guide Didier and I start riding south along the west coast of Madagascar. It's the rainy season and the swamps and rivers are not easy to cross.. Somewhere along the line, Didier and I get separated and I have no clue where he is or what's going on..

When you rely on your community, the value of helping other people becomes clear. It's not really "giving" it's actually "making sure everyone is in a good place, so they can help me". Helping other people benefits you too. Same thing happens in wealthy countries after some kind of disaster. Never been closer to people living nearby than when a category 5 hurricane passed overhead.

Worked 4 years in Madagascar. Been riding my XR400 all over the country alone or in group.
When you get lost, hitch a local on the back of the bike to put you back on the right track. Don't forget the tip in one of the poorest country around the world, everybody happy.
When you ride with somebody better ride apart because it is very dangerous to ride in other guys' dust.
When you reach a diversion or cross track the guy in the front stops and wait for the other to catch him up.
If no pirogue to cross a river, get 4 guys and pass 2 sticks across the wheels to lift the bike and get on the other side.
Been there and done your mistakes before.
It is a very challenging country to ride a motorcycle but you always get through thanks to the amazing people that leave in those remote places, always ready to help you. Loved it.
    ENJOY.....

The absolute best way to see the world has been through Noraly’s videos. How she manages to film so much in all the precarious situations is just amazing. All the helpful people that helped her and DJ through the swamp were just so cool. Seeing the difference in the Garmin and your tablet definitely is a good reason for the change. When I was a kid living on army bases after the war 75 years ago, every Saturday afternnoon we would line up at the base theater door to race in and get the best seats for the next exciting episode of Sky King, or Red Rider or whatever they were showing. It certainly seems that there isn’t anything you really haven’t experienced in the last SEVERAL YEARS. This Madagascar extension proves that entirely. The moment I get notification of the arrival of your latest video, I stop what I’m doing and get right after it.I’ve said it before but I can’t help repeating myself, it’s wonderful to see you enjoying your BEST LIFE. @@johnmalenchek6597 It would have to be very hard packed indeed not to leave sign, even a dirt bike that has moved onto tarmac still leaves a pattern for a few yards. Truth is, people have lost the art of tracking. I saw a UA-cam video where a guy had to be rescued from deep woods because he could find his way back, never even occurred to him to follow his own tracks back. Humans have switched off common sense.

@@jamesfairmind2247 fair, but its a lost art for a reason.
if you ask most people here, their solution would just be a phone, or a meet-up point if they get lost. and that works perfectly fine almost all of the time. why teach yourself how to track when this will almost never come in useful?
Humanity has indeed gotten lazy, but that is simply because technology has advanced and is now able to support us. if you teach yourself old skills like tracking, hunting, or survival, those skills are rarely rewarded.

No, Malagasy is actually the only language spoken in Madagascar but is divided in different dialects which sometimes may sound like african languages depending on the region. "Salama" simply means "I am good" and can be used as a shorter way to greet someone or respond to "Manahoana" which means how are you.

How useful a pair of walkie talkie radios would have been!
