On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.

GS I thought that was probably the dumbest maneuver ever when you were first talking about it but now after you doing it I see the effectiveness in it that’s pretty cool learn something new today
An effective missile evasion tactic, but isn't it entirely dependent on the enemy only using low-maneuverability hypersonic missiles?
You've featured the MiG-31 in your videos a few times already, but I have yet to see you fly one. So yeah...
Give the people what they want and fly the Battle of the Canards: a dogfight battle royale featuring (at a minimum) the Eurofighter Typhoon, Dassault Rafale, JAS39 Gripen, and SU30SM Flanker-H. May the best 'nard win.
6:13 I always love these POV shots of the missile. It’s almost as though the missile knows where it is at all times.

Those things have a turning radius the size of texas due to their "speed", so a manouverable fighter can easily dodge them given the skills

Was the MiG-31 using conventional defensive maneuvers the whole time? The Meteor is pretty darned smart, I'm surprised it defeated that many.
I was confused by that too, felt like it should've wrapped up quicker. Maybe the range was a little excessive and it wasn't until the Eurofighter pushed inward more that the Meteor drained him and then finally scrapped him
I mean 180km I think is within range of that first leaf if engagements but the MiG was definitely cranking while guiding their fox 3s
That is the most maneuverable MIG 31 in Russian inventory.
speed is life in bvr and that applies to defense as well. the mig-31's lack of maneuverability definitely has a serious negative impact on its capability to defend but it was still extremely far and extremely fast and that's not a combo that missiles particularly like

The Foxhound just looks fast. Like, if you were to ask someone to draw a supersonic fighter-interceptor, they would end up with something like the Foxhound.
That barrel-rolling tactic is exactly what worked way back in EF2000 (1995) on DOS.

The early Meteors were fired well out of range. They were just used to try to trigger his RWR and force him defensive
That was a refreshing change in tactics.

Probably not, those missiles are more maneuverable and can thus make tighter turns.

Now Fox-2's will need Flares, but it can often does work, assuming you are close enough

Great video, but had to laugh at what came to mind when you started the barrel rolls! “I'll Try Spinning, That's A Good Trick”: 10 Most Ridiculous Anakin Skywalker Quotes
Many, many moons ago when LOMAC was the sim of choice, this technique (albeit at lower levels) was one of the favourites to defeat SAMs. It took a few goes to understand the timing, but it was beautiful to watch missiles flying by, unable to keep track of you. Really enjoyed this one, keep it up :)

The speed of the rocket? there's nothing to talk about, the R37M is stronger in everything
Proof that speed and even stealth (or vision) isn't everything, you also need the maneuverability to hit the target if you know where it is.
That was exemplary of Kung-fu drunken monkey style used in BVR aerial fight.
Interesting new maneuver, and great camera work following those missiles and showing how they track and miss you, though that only really worked with this specific way to defend and usually you'd be too low to contrail

I have used a back and forth weave to the same effect as the rolls you were using the weaving one seemed to work well for me and allowed me to maintain pretty good speed I also was changing altitude a bit just enough to keep my airspeed when going up. But it worked and allowed me to maintain lock. I will have to try the rolling maneuver and see which one I like best. I liked the weave one was able to maintain higher altitude and speed while bleeding incoming missiles energy off. I look forward to trying this new one
I'd love to see a video of trying to intercept the venerable SR-71 Blackbird with the best technology 2023 has to offer. Does an updated MiG-31 with R-37s even stand a chance at Mach 3+ and climbing through angels 80? Modernised F-14 with AMRAAM-D3s, AMRAAM-ERs, or speculative AIM-260s?

@@mikes989 Lots of people have practiced for it. Doing it is another matter entirely.
Actually this "Large diameter roll" method will technically work against any type of missile when it is not within its "volume zone" in terms of turn. Normal missile will burn at most 10sec or so, it makes this "non volume zone" really tight so hard to utilize in conventional DCS. But against missile like R-37, when its threat purely comes from topspeed, this method is a go to. Not sure against AIM-120D/260 or PL-15 though, including Meteor itself.
The technique should be more effective against any missile than a 2D back-and-forth crank with the same angle. Whether that's sufficient depends on the parameters of the engagement.
Yeah, I kept waiting for the Foxhound to fire off an AA-12 to see if the more agile missile would have better luck. May have still been out of range

Impressive, staying high and fast to use the missiles velocity to outmanouvre it. In your case, perhaps mixing in amraam 's after the first two might have killed the bandit sooner if he was also using high altitude to max his missiles effectiveness?
How so? There is nothing a AMRAAM can do that a Meteor can't do better.

So to get a hypersonic missile to a barrel-rolling target might be to send one or two from the longest distance possible, perhaps one with loft when closer, giving them more time to bleed off energy?

This is a far more interesting defense strategy compared to the typical "turn tail" strategy. This allows you to remain offensive and not give up altitude, much more menacing to the enemy aircraft. That said, you should test this against AMRAAMs, something tells me it might not be this effective against smaller/nimbler missiles.
Wonder if this tactic would work in the real world?
Back to the old barrel roll. Sometimes the old ideas are the best.
Instructor: To defeat enemy missile you must do simple aerobatic maneuver.

hello man, I use to do that kind of thing back in the day but I don't have the time anymore these days have a lot of life stuff going on and the channel takes up a lot more time than usual. The discord community in the video descriptions does have a lot of valuable people in it who might be willing to help someone new to the sim though that's where I recommend starting.
