  • The Interceptor that Nato still Fears: Mig 31 Foxhound
The MiG-31 was the Soviet Union’s go-to long-range interceptor designed to take out cruise missiles mid-flight. Nicknamed the “Super Foxbat” or the Foxhound in NATO reporting, the MiG-31 improved upon its predecessor by adding unmatched advanced radar and weapon systems enabling it to attack multiple targets at the same time. The MiG-31 also had a strange history with its development leaked to NATO in an unlikely scenario that inspired a book and a movie. Join us as we explore the wild history and insane specs behind the MiG-31.

MiG-25 was designed as interceptor against Mach-3 bombers, like Valkyrie. It was never meant to be used in dogfight and frame could actually crack in high speed manoeuvres. But such bombers were abandoned so MiG-31 did not need so high top speed.

The Mig-25 was designed after the A-5 Vigilante. What the Soviets thought was a mach 3 nuclear bomber. They wanted one of their own; hence, the Mig-25. The original A-5 had dual rudders. Increase the proportions all around in the typical "bigger is better" Russian doctrine and you basically have the mig. See NA-237 (WS-300A competition).

The mig 25 was shown to be able to withstand 5g+ maneuvers. The thing is, fighter jets are not going to do 9+ G while loaded. That figure I'd obtained while running clean. So, in truth, it could hold its own in a fight.

@@deven6518 If that's the case, why none of US fighters go that fast? What I have seen, none of planes made to go very fast was also good in dogfight. Avro Arrow was abandoned, SR-71 with rockets was never deployed, and MiG-31 have lower maximum speed then MiG-25 and still completely different set of tasks then MiG-29 and Su line.

The Mig 25 was hype, but the Mig 31 was the real deal, Russia's version of the F 14 designed to take out B 52s and B-1Bs much the same way the F 14 was designed to intercept the Tu 22Ms before they could launch their missiles against US carriers. Today, it carries the Kinzhal anti-surface hypersonic missile and AWACS killer missile.

i recommend you to read Red Storm Rising by Tom Clancy. it simulates an attack on a Carrier group and F-14 are not gonna dig totally against a 30-40 badgers or backfires. the massive AA defense comes from escorts that have massive radar domes, support from Awacs and missiles like there is no tomorrow. the Carrier will need to launch several outfitted fighters and maybe to late. The Soviets did not ( and Russia either) have a good early warning system against bombers because of the size of the country but the MIG 25 and MIG 31 were imperative for fast interception

The MiG-31 is no longer an airplane, it is already a spaceship. Space ship. This is reflected in the rank of commander - he is the captain of the ship.
This is a machine of a new class, unique, it has no analogues in the world, either in production models or in prototypes. I haven’t even heard of anyone trying to even think about this topic.
This is already a near space machine.
And yes, it can shoot down satellites in low orbit - this is one of its functions.
And here everyone is talking about maneuverability... Was the Death Star maneuverable?

No, it doesn't. The Kinzhal is not a hypersonic missile, it's merely a normal cruise missile with a slap-dash modification for air-launch and it moves no faster than the missile that it is based on (which is still "hypersonic" like every other, but speed is not what makes a true hypersonic missile special). And by "based on" I mean is literally the exact same missile, entirely, with a different name and an adjustment to be launched from a fighter. Heck, the only country even trying to develop a true hypersonic missile is the US, which has had some notable progress. Every other nation either is creating air-launch cruise missiles and calling them "hypersonic missiles" as a technicality or trying to create their first hypersonic glide-vehicles, which the US has had for many decades.

The US retired it in the 1980s, the British and Germans retired their Tornado interceptor variants for the Eurofighter, China is soon going to retire their J-8s but Russia's keeping that concept with modernizing the MiG 31 and also developing a successor to it, the alleged PAK-DA or the MiG-41.

It was no more built with radar signature in mind than was the F-15. Also, stealth has become massively overrated. You only have to read what defence strategists say to recognise that this is becoming a problem for the West, particularly the United States.
The MiG-31 is causing all manner of headaches in Ukraine right now because the sheer power of its radar and weaponry _can’t be countered._ It’s known to have scored at least two hard kills against Ukrainian aircraft. Might be as many as 10 but not likely. And this was done from more than 160 kms away.
The MiG-31 Zaslon radar has no equivalent in the west. There is no fighter radar with that much power. The R-37 missile has proved extremely effective. Cruising at 70,000 feet at Mach 2.35, it fires an R-37 that travels at Mach 6. The kinematic advantage is obvious. The missile is so fast that by the time it is detected it’s probably too late. Russia has had this capability for decades and everyone laughed. The MiG-31 would give most western types a run for their money.

-The 50 year old 1970s designed F-15 (Mach 2.544) was designed from the outset to handle the MiG 25/MiG 31 or any kind of MiG for the next 50 years. With beautifully integrated Sparrow AIM-7F missiles and now AIM-120 AMRAAM there is no loss in speed when 4 missiles are carried so there would be no difficulty in handling an MiG 31. A lot of Russians things are just 'Big" and achieve performance through size and expense such as the R-37 (4 times the size of an AMRAAM). Either way the F-15 could shoot down the MiG 31.
-The SR-71 could cruise at Mach 3.2 for its entire journey and reach over Mach 3.5 (limited only by ingestion of the nose shock wave to the intakes). The single seat reconnaissance and fighter (YF-12) versions could exceed this due to the shorter nose.
-The Phoenix Missile used on the F-14 Tomcat was hyper-sonic. It could hit targets at 200km in 1970s.
-The US never bothered to develop weapons it could have. The Soviet Union was dead and its wasn't worth it.
-There is a new generation of 4 new US AAM coming.

With very mixed results, the German attempts with "Cellon" material was a complete failure that actually made aircraft MORE visible(by reflecting more sunlight and in more directions), while the British stealthed airship worked, but it was quickly realised that it was completely useless because its intended purpose of nighttime recon, just didn't work at all.
