Rallying at its very best imo.. I remember it well.. Some classic cars with the proper classic drivers.. A who's who of top flight drivers and teams.. The Eaton Yale colours my all time favourite on a Mk2 Escort. I absolutely loved the RAC back in the day..
That was a vintage year for the RAC Rally IMO. All the top drivers were there and I was lucky enough to be one of the sound recordists in the two film crews that made this film. Seeing it again after all this time brings back some very happy memories, as well as a few less happy ones of going without much sleep, getting cold wet and muddy and so on. Good times.
brilliant vid. Really was a classic time in Rallying history. So many top drivers competing. Hannu Mikkola in the Escort really was the master of the British Forests at that time
The great Dickie Davis on Commentary. End of an Era, Audi Quattro just around the corner, the Fantastic group B cars. Watched the Trentham stage I think that year.
Though not very much power, 250 brake or so, those Group 4 cars were spectacular in that they didn't have much grip neither...Slipping and sliding all over the place! Hard work driving them on the limit between the trees on slippery surfaces!
Great video, though some inane commentary and drivers' qustions here and there ... and why so little emphasis on Russell Brookes, GB's best driver, who finshed second? Didn't Andrews Industrial Equipment pay enough in bribes ???
I'm lucky enough to have seen these automotive geniuses back then. The Manx international was amazing to watch then too. Why did they play all that shit music over the real sound track back then?
What a childhood i had watching these legends ❤

Fantastic! Wow, I love the old days. The characters, so amusing and humble.

Marku Allen, driving on arsefelt
And then arrived Audi From the future
And was beaten again and again and again. Much overrated!
.. you’ll have to wait several years from ‘78 till the Audi arrived (and for the rule changes that permitted it to compete)
