- NO POWER STEERING. I've been there and its sucks. Whether your rack is leaking or you power steering lines are leaking. This video will help you replace them and get that car running like new again. This process may apply to other makes and models such as Audi, BMW, and others. Please comment with any questions!
Tools and Torque Specs:
-21mm socket (subframe bolts) 74 ft-lbs + 90* amzn.to/2pSU4tN
-13mm (rack and dogbone bolts) 15 ft-lbs
-18mm (tie rod nut) 15 ft-lbs
-(steering line Bottom) 34 ft-lbs

I'm doing this right now...Thank you soooooo much! everything is going smoothly about to drop the sub frame. I have the sub frame bolts soaking in PBblaster so I have a minute to update my issues as I go along. One thing I recommend for us rust belt guys...leave the steering rod connected so you break the outer tie rod end bolt loose. It will just turn if its disconnected. Lock the wheel to hold it.
Ryan No Thanks I didn’t use penitrating fluid on the rack tie downs and I cracked one in half :/ so for people reading this USE LOTS OF PENETRATING FLUID

This is a great vid but don’t reuse your subframe bolts. They are torque to yield. Get a new set on fcp or urotuning

i couldnt have replaced my rack without your vid dude,,so thanks bro ,,the thing i would had is that,,i had to put washers front and back on both line becuse the one with only one washers wasnt sealed properly and leaked,,,all good now tho,,cheers,,

Great video. I have a question. Each and every time I install the top line (washer on both in and outside), leaks bad. Tightened up very well. This is a new rack. Should I use new copper washers?
Omg can I use your help irl right now lol something happened to my golf yesterday and on the back side of the subframe looks like something exploded that has two metal hose's running into it idek what it is honestly but not my engine running really rough and doesn't want to turn left anymore idek
Ty.. I found a new SKF rack for $150 no core charge. Is it a good idea to buy a $40 re-seal kit to fix the old leaking one, and then resell it or keep it as a spare?
Thanks for making this video. This job looks like one of the most challenging jobs on the MK4 because of the precision required during reinstallation. Now that I've seen the job, it's doubtful that I'll ever ever do the same job to my '04 GTI VR6. If the job ever becomes necessary, the car will be parted out and sold. I do have a couple questions. First, if I need to replace the tie rods, does the rack complicate the job in any way? Second, when you reinstalled the subframe, were there any precautions you took to ensure proper wheel alignment since the subframe links to the control arms? As a follow up to the second question, I'm not sure if the subframe is self aligned with the 4 mounting bolts for the subframe or if there is an alignment process for the subframe. Again, I appreciate the video and your response to the questions.
Q1Tie Rods are rack are separate jobs so no. Q2 The Subframe has a very small amount of alignment adjustment so yes but not really. bolt the subframe and push it square with the front 2 bolts.
Was this a good repair? Has it been reliable? Good video. I only wish there was more specific video/instruction on the proper way to bleed the power steering system on this particular model.
Yes it was a good repair. Fill power steering reservoir with the car off. turn the wheel right and left slowly a few times. then repeat.

But I do this at the parking place.
No workshop, only parking spot with 2 jacks for every car.

Thanks for the video. Why didnt you replace the subframe bolts? Arent they single use fasteners like most others? Also, why didnt you replace the pump with the rack the first time? I've heard it's a good idea since when one goes bad the other is not far behind because of debris in the system.
Michael Glenn yes they are stretch bolts. I’m sure you can find many forums on this topic.Reusing them a few times isn’t the end of the world. But please research the topic. If the pump ended up going I would just replace it at the time.

Yes, both banjo bolts have 2 washers.
Did you notice any gains after installing the R32 rack?
any leaks after u tightened her all up? i just did mine tonight but i used 2 washers for top and bottom bolt , will keep eye on it to make sure i have no leaks
Bottom one has 2 washers bro at least mine did 2004 vw Jetta 1.8t

Thank you for the awesome video! Will this work for a 2001 cabrio? I know it is considered an Mk"3.5" and not a true Mk4. I have a Mk3 cabrio and a Mk4 cabrio and they look exactly the same underneath the car asides from the different fenders and hood and front bumper. Thank you!
What do you torque the subframe bolts at and the centre bolts that go into rack? Cheers
Can the metal fluid hard line on the rack be replaced. Lines is leaking.

Hi great video. I replaced my rack which was leaking in the boots on BOTH sides. However now my steering feels super light like a damn Lexus. It used to be very firm and stiff before. Is there a way I can adjust it to be more stiff? It feels overboosted and disconnected from the car.
I used the Pentosin CHF 11S hydraulic fluid from the green container

How come your outer tie rods are coming from the bottom up? My mk4 gli, has them going in from top to bottom, does this matter at all?

/BCENZtube passenger side, from the boot, I noticed that when the car is on the ground, the tie rod is @ an angle/slanted, I have a 03 GLI VR6-on Koni cupkit w/eibach springs & it’s tie rods are mounted at top to bottom as well but the tie rod look a lot more straight when it’s on the ground, the 1.8t GLI is on stock suspension w/ Audi 90 “low strut mounts” so it’s slightly lower than the VR but Idk the steering just got a lot stiffer, then I noticed the boot was soaked.
hello /BCENZTUBE! I have one question my 2001 vw jetta vr6 started leaking from the area of the boots I don't see any leaking from the steering pump even when the car is on how i know is not the steering pump and i just have to replace the steering rack?
Gero Azmodii if it’s leaking from the boot area and not the pump itself then that’s how you know you need to replace the rack
Why are your outer tie rods on the bottom? Did you lower it or something?
Yes, the idea is to correct some geometry from lowering by flipping and swapping outers

what if i can not see any visible leaking is there any internal damage that can happen
i it got hit some one said and the inner steering bar got damaged so i had to replace it

Why didn't you just buy a brand new one? they're not expensive.
And I've had my steering rack changed and what car handles like a piece of sh1t.
I literally want to strip it down, polybush it, new bearings, maybe even new drive shafts.
if i knew how to get it to you, i'd buy you a funnel
