  • Watch how we built a wooden replica of this epic steam locomotive----
    Each Christmas Full Sail University puts on a holiday event for all of the staff and their children called Santaland. In 2012 our theme was inspired by The Polar Express. I work in the art department of the film program and I challenged my crew to build the Polar Express steam engine as the main attraction for the event. This is the process and plans for building the locomotive. It took 10 people 10 days to build and another 2 days to load in and set up. The train was 11 feet tall, and over 26 feet long, yet it fit through an ordinary doorway. Watch the magic as my crew helps me realize one of the most epic Santalands ever.

    I remember seeing a Polar Express replica similar to this at Sea World when I was very young. though it is a bit inaccurate, I think you folks did a fantastic job with what you had available! Also, is it a one time use thing or is it stored for future Christmas events?

      You are correct! There should be 4, however the room we were setting it up in was only so big... removing a wheel allowed it to fit in the room. Another wheel would have added about 4 more feet to the engine that was already about 30 feet. Plus I had only 10 days and 10 people (who had very little building experience) to actually build the engine. So removing the wheel meant less time and material as well. And honestly you're the first one to notice... Thanks for the comment! I appreciate the view and the feedback!

    This is amazing! I am attempting to build the very first part of the train coming out of a tunnel for a Girl Scout event. How thick was the wood you used in the "skeleton" for the boiler?

      The rings were 3/8” plywood doubled up and stapled together I believe and the body was covered in 1/8” plywood… it’s thinness allows it to be flexible enough to curve around the body

    It’s almost perfect just the wheel arrangement is wrong the polar express in the movie is a Pere Marquette Berkshire steam locomotive with some changes to fit the book any way the wheels should be 2-8-4 but in this video it’s a 2-6-0 (I AM NOT HATING) even know there’s some flaws there much more talented and deserve love and it’s amazing

    • @sunshinetv2419
      @sunshinetv2419  5 років тому

      I'd love to sell it to you but unfortunately like most of the props and sets I have built in my lifetime they eventually make their way to the landfill. There is simply not enough room to store them. You could certainly commission one to be built, let me know if you're interested.

    • @sunshinetv2419

      Its not a mistake... it was a calculated design. If I added another wheel, the engine would have been too big for the room it was installed in. And if I added the rear trucks we would not have finished on time. So I took a few artistic liberties. Believe me when people walked in the room, no one noticed or questioned the number of wheels, they were too busy picking their jaws up off the floor.
