So guys! I hold my hands up on this one, I misread the lofts thinking they were closer when really the pings are way strong. Let me know if you’d like me to re do the test maybe with retro lofts or with some other irons. Once again thanks for the support and sorry if it’s ruined your Monday like it seems to have for some 🙌🏼⛳️❤️
I have a set of 101T, and tbh they are fantastic, so consistent, it's unreal. I would rather pay less and have lessons or play more golf, I was a 21 handicap when I bought them, and now a 16.5 played today and shot 84.
Ironically I just finished building the 28th set of Takomo irons this morning. The quality control of all their products is as good as any of the big brands. I have always been a big Ping fan and played them for years but switched to Takomo two years ago and never looked back. JD
Sorry disagree, I’ve had my Takomo irons 18 months and the KBS shafts are starting to show pitting, but nothing showing on a D9 KBS shaft I got the same time, are Takomo getting the same quality as the more expensive shafts? Just for balance I love the irons and wouldn’t change them.
@ I wouldn’t obviously disagree with what’s going on with your shafts at all. Since I have purchased the heads and custom build them with many steel and graphite shaft manufacturers I was referring to the quality of the heads and how tight the tolerances have been. So far out of the 198 individual heads I have only had 7 that were not within specs out of the box. I probably should have been more clear. JD
I think it really depends on you as a player. I went for the Ping i530s this week, and with the stock shaft, they weren’t working for me. I actually preferred the Mizuno 925 Pros initially. But after changing shafts and adjusting the toe up by 2 degrees, the Pings completely transformed for my game (now we have to wait and see if that's the case long-term). For those considering Takomo or similar, keep in mind that getting them fitted will likely add to the cost as well. My setup-5 through PW, plus a 50° and 58° wedge (all with new shafts)-came out to €2,156. Pricey? Absolutely. Worth it for me? 100%!
I bought the Caley 01T in copper finish. They are fantastic in every way. It’s almost as if they were designed just for me. The head size, shape, performance, etc, all great. They were $600. Went ahead and bought a matching wedge set and the 01x utility. I’m sure these are very similar to the Takomo 101T. Two small complaints; the copper finish is not all that great and I wish they actually had a matching approach wedge for the 4-p set. I would definitely buy this set again. I don’t think you’re losing anything buying either of these DTC sets. They are essentially half the price with identical performance.
@@caleygolf I also bought the Caley but when researching I looked at both Caley and Takomo. The geometry of the clubs is identical and the websites are also identical. Are they owned by the same company or are they just manufactured in the same (Chinese) factory?
It’s all about the shaft. Getting fitted for the right shaft for your swing is much more important than what head is on the end of the shaft. In general, major suppliers sell their iron sets with cheap models of name brand shafts. Get fitted for shafts for your irons!
Well, that's put the cat amongst my pigeons! I was about to pull the trigger on a set of 101T's, but as I can't afford a new set from the big brands, I think I'll have to look at used now. I feel like I'm too good for regular 101's, though my golf friends would probably dispute that 😁 By the way, it's only a fraction cheaper to buy just the Takomo heads. Trust me, I have checked!
Really good video, it just shows there is now a choice/alternative throughout golf equipment 👍 To have a real test between them if that’s what you want to do, you’d have to have a robot hitting both clubs. Your swing will never be the same on each hit.
The Takomo 101T is weaker loft than standard specs for I530. Loft by loft: 4i: I530 = 19* / 101T = 22*. Almost a whole club between them. 8i: I530 = 33* / 101T = 36*. Almost a whole club between them. PW: I530 = 42* / 101T = 46*. A whole club between them. So no wonder I530 goes further than 101T.
A story most won't care about, back in college I played MB Blades. But working with a club repair and builder, he showed me the jacked lofts of Eye 2's; only players ball back then were balata's. He built me a titanium shafted Eye 2 one iron bent to 13 degrees, my 250 club, my fairway was a TM tour spoon 13 degrees also with titanium shaft, 2 1/2 inches longer than the one iron, 270+. Now I purchase clubs that loft to 30 degrees, don't care what number on the club is, now the gap wedges all need lead tape across the top of the club to offset the excessive sole weighting. No longer drive it 290+; more like 225 with 440 cc head and graphite shafts that weight 1/3 of the shafts of the 90's. The I530 with 30 degrees of loft is the 5 iron of my yesteryear, but 37 inches long, a much easier length for the typical amateur. Pay attention to loft, lie, and length; the dynamics of irons have changed little in 40 years. The ball and the lower lofted metals of today have ruined pro golf, 6800 - 7100 yards was a good course, now 7500+ and they hit (today's) pitching wedges into long 4's and many 5's.
I’m impressed with this test. Ping are great club makers , but like you said not everyone cup of tea. Noise and offset are losing lots of potential players
James you should check out another DTC brand named MALTBY. Try the TS4 or TS3 or even the TE+ V4 irons. They have almost every shaft you can think of to pair with the irons.
Seriously looking at the 101Ts or the 201s as my next set of irons. One thing worth mentioning is that anyone looking at a set of 101Ts is probably going to be playing a 4 hybrid (and maybe even a 5H) rather than the irons. Makes the focus on the 4 irons a little redundant. PW and 7 iron more of a comparison for most of us. Good vid though.
While there is an obvious difference between the clubs with loft of almost one club length. The obvious solution would be to compare as close as possible identical lofts rather than the number stamped in the head. What is the difference in shaft length? Would be good if you could do testing with SGGT you could have identical shafts on the different heads. Ultimately it comes down to the club an individual feels most comfortable with 0:02
Great review. Very balanced. Nice job. Out of interest, What's the relationship you have with takomo? They feature in your bag and in lots of videos. Are you just a fan or do you have a commercial relationship?
Ok, but you're a golf professional. What about someone with a higher handicap 15 or even 25. How much better are they? 'm glad you compare them. What about miss hits and toe and heel hits like me hitting them. The $500 difference is more to someone like me who only plays a few times each month and my golf season is May- September. Great video and content. 👍
James, I hit the i530's the other day I liked them but the price tag is a bit steep for me at the min. If I got all my specs via a fitting on the i530's would this carryover into the 101t's ?
I'm over the big brands. Im pretty sure my next set will be DTC. I prefer the 101t lofts. With the i530 you'll need some wierd 47° wedge or their AW to bridge the gap to your normal GW
JAMES what are your thoughts of the Takomo 101's vs the PXG Black Ops having a difficult time choosing a new iron or even the ELEVEN's ? I am 59 and an 8 handicap father time is taking its toll artritis too what i am looking for is somethin thats forgiving yet fun to hit what are your thoughts James I am unable to hit any of them I know my fitting stats so will be ordering them online great video James cheers from Vulcan Canada
Happens! But probably worth a re-do then. Don’t want anyone make the wrong conclusions I guess? Regardless, given some of the data showed such differences, the review / interpretation seemed very biased towards takomo. Like, hitting both pitching wedges and thinking they had similar lofts, the takomo seemed short and made me think they had the problem of other hollow irons in the past where the PW is too short compared to the other irons.
The Takomo PW went 110 to 120. That’s short. You hit the ping 120 to 133 and say “very similar to Takomo”. At that point we thought the lofts are the same. If the distance was switched between the clubs, I’m sure Takomo would’ve been praised. I’m nowhere near a Ping fan. It just didn’t come across as unbiased to me.
Well, I have never hit the i530 or the 101t but i do have several sets of Ping irons from the Ping eye 2 to the G15. They are all great golf clubs due to superb engineering. Everything that Ping makes is great due to R&D and great engineers. They can be perfectly fit to each individual's build and swing. Takomo doesn't do custom club fittings and they just don't have the decades of R&D that Ping does. $600.00 is a lot of money to gamble on a club that you can't hit until after purchase and then wish that you spent the extra $500.00 to get a club that will fit better, feel better and resale better. For me there is no comparison to Ping - one of the greatest clubmakers in the history of golf, point, blank, period!!
I was watching launch angles on your comparisons. The ping consistently launched lower. On the 4 irons you were launching at 12.5 degrees on your good hits with the Takomo and 10 degrees with the Ping. Did you check lie angles of each club. The pings look like game improvement and the Takomo's have traditional forged lofts.
Get a set of clubs from the 1940’s and play a round of “best ball” with Chris. Would be nice to see how good those 1940’s golfers must have been to shoot under par using the technology of those days.
It’s important to note that the Takomo PW is 4 degrees weaker, and the 4iron is 3 degrees weaker than the i530. Not surprising that Ping is longer. Personally, I think brands like Takomo only exist because golf has become extremely expensive. I own 101T’s, and yes they are shorter, but they are beautiful, consistent, great value and still forgiving- distance isn’t everything!
Lots of comments below on the different lofts. Usually you would be on to this significant difference, but you seem to have forgotten this important parameter. Why did this happen?
@@derekwhyle1884I could not agree more with that.. a $1400 set of irons in great shape you are lucky if you can get $450-500 on trade in. And the same ripoff applies to drivers and top line putters as well. I’ll never forget a few years ago I wanted to trade in a newer Scotty Cameron putter always covered not a scratch anywhere that I paid $400 and they offered $80. 😡😡
Played the i230 (amazing clubs) but switched to the i530 for a bit more distance. They didn't disappoint very forgiving and long. The pw feels feel a little hollow for pitch and run shots so might stick with the i230pw.
@@mihi4 Just checked and 101T heads only are £429 given that shafts are about say £100 each and grips about £12 each we'll say fitted then that would put the completed set 4-Pw at about £1100 which makes them about the same price as the i350's if you go if you go graphite I guess that would be even higher. So is it really such a good deal or the right way to go?
I think that it depends on your budget both will do the job all depends on what you can afford. I have to say the engineers at Ping are well ahead of other companies and they have to get paid.
Ping wins on feel. It feels great, like you compressed a golf ball. So nice. I can’t stand mushy feeling irons, Pings feel like golf shots. And it is the sleeker, more nimble iron. The Takomo is fine on performance but the finish looks bad quickly.
The ping 4 iron is 3° stronger than the 101T and the PW is 4° stronger. That's why there is such a length difference, you aren't comparing like for like so can't really factor in distance.
@@finnguzz6448 order Retro Lofts on the Pings. Something they offer. Finally newer player distance irons really more on decent angle than spin to stop the ball. There's a reason the Pings fly higher then the Takomos.
Ping wins on feel. It feels great, like you compressed a golf ball. So nice. I can’t stand mushy feeling irons, Pings feel like golf shots. And it is the sleeker, more nimble iron. The Takomo is fine on performance but the finish looks bad quickly. P.S. Offset aids launch, it has no role in hooked shots. Golf myth, constantly repeated. Hooks come from handsy golf swings. Too much hand-driven action vs proper pressure shift.
Figured the lofts were somewhat different. I really think that Takomo is a great company l, and needed demographic in the club world. They’re an inexpensive Miura for crying out loud! I want a set one day. However, it’s not fair to think that it takes the big brands out because they’re doing tons of r&d. Still, a little competition never hurt an industry. A bit of a caveat: for me, I prefer my irons from 9-4 iron (9-6 Mizuno Pro 221, 5-4 Mizuno Pro 225) Also, a Titleist T200 2-iron. All my wedges I choose outside of my iron set. Blended sets are so nice. Really wish companies would just offer irons with lofts on them rather than numbers, but it’s honestly something players need to understand what they’re playing. It’s always funny to me when I’m asked what I just hit, and I usually say, “it’s hard to say, because I don’t know your lofts.” 🤓 I say this because I think if people know what lofts they’re playing, and what helps them in their game. I tell people to get fitted all the time, and spend the money on the fitting, rather than being sold clubs at the fitting. Use it as a lesson: learn what will help their game. Consider the clubs they suggest, then decide accordingly. Takoma make a great club, and their lofts and lies can be changed just like any other club maker. The iron world, in my opinion, is very close together-though I do think that not all driving irons and wedges are alike! Thanks for the review, James! Love your channel
Ping Irons are at a different level with regard to quality. The prices are ridiculous, but now after having a set for two years, I can see why they cost more. But yea… all clubs are stupid expensive.
Why does the head speed number change so much on that sim ? Some read 79mph which is what you would expect yhen some at 91mph.. got to be a mis read and alter the results
We should be doing to the big golf brands what we are currently doing to auto manufacturers. They insist on increasing pricing at an alarming rate then we just won’t buy your products until you come to your senses.
Give me Takomo! Think of the lessons. Wedge - Ping is 4 degree stronger 7 - Ping is 3 degree stronger 4 - Ping is 3 degree stronger I got some older Callaway’s this year and my numbers dropped for distances then compared lofts to my player improvement irons (x-16) and my “newer” (razr x forged) are 3-4 degrees weaker. But I hold more greens and don’t have the fliers
That notch on the back of the Ping is off-putting. I don't like the look at all. Not that aesthetics should be that important, but it does affect my purchases.
@ funny how nobody else is doing it so it must not be all that innovative. Some guys are put off by those turbulators on the Ping drivers too but I play a lot of their stuff and they don’t bother me at all.
@@lokidecat. I think it is also to assist in bending the loft and lie. I agree it seems gimmicky but Ping is an engineering company, and I cannot see them leaving things hanging around due to gimmicks. Right or wrong, I believe they think it has value for something?🤷♂️
I have a set of Ping i3 Blades. Break them out occasionally. Last set of Pings I tried were the iBlades. They had way too much spin for me. Got AP3s instead 🤙
Whenever you switch to the indoor numbers, I always watch "head speed" on your sim.....crazy how much it jumps around with similar swings, from 78 to 100 mph in this video, with similar ball speeds....strange.
Can’t compare “x” iron to “x” iron anymore…jacked lofts on a pew doesn’t make a club longer. I play my irons off of a 46/47° pw or 41/42° 9 iron, the marketing is shit these days.
@@craigforecast9168 I too picked up some i230s in my spec with the shafts I liked. Great irons for less than the Takomo 201s which is what they are comparable to.
I think the golf giants have hit a technological wall with R&D so all they are left with is their brand. Probably particularly true for non professional golfers. For amateur golfers to say they only play with brand xxx, this is where the executives of the big brands are smiling all the way to the bank. I can also assume for the golf balls. I fish out more Pro-V1s and Pro-V1xs at my club by a big margin over all other brands. To that, I say a big “thank you” to all those big ego golfers.
The top brands are just a tad more polished to me in performance. i530 keeps a good deal of spin and its flight dynamics seem to be very dialed in. The DTC irons perform well and work fine but just not quite as completely thought out. That's my view and lots of folks are playing great golf with the DTC brands but for me the top brands are just a better overall package. I'll by a used set next time.
Only one choice here. Takomo. Ping just hits too far and you can't control the gaps. Nearly all Pro's don't use the pings. Like 3 do out of 37 ping players.
On the 4 irons you swung the Takomo at an average of 95Mph. You swung the Ping at 100MPH. That's the difference. Was Ping paying you or do you not think club head speed effects ball speed and ultimately carry and DOA? Seriously.

I own 101T’s, and yes they are shorter, but they are beautiful, consistent, great value and still forgiving- distance isn’t everything!
If you hit the middle of all clubs there all good these days buy the cheaper one people makes no difference we ain't tour pros 👍👍
The fact that we aren’t tour pros is exactly why we should buy forgiving irons because we don’t hit the middle of the club every shot
For the money and the quality, the 101t are fantastic. i used mizuno for years, and I tried the 101t s and been in the bag ever since i love em.
Tikomo irons might be my next set they look nice and forgiving 😊winter is here 😅
Lots of comments below on the different lofts. Usually you would be on to this significant difference, but you seem to have forgotten this important parameter. Why did this happen?
Yeah I’m Surprised I missed it. I can only think I checked the lofts of the 101’s.
The joy of no sleep
With a baby lol
@@JamesRobinsonGolf It was a rare blip in otherwise hundreds of top quality videos.
Appreciate it mate
It would be interesting to see the resale value of both sets when it became time to change them.
How about Ping irons losing value in 2 years more than the Takomos cost in the first place?
Ping irons tend to hold value fairly well. The day ypu receive the takomos their trade in value drops to about $175-225
@@douglasoconnor2351 Indeed. But how much are the Pings' well maintained value after 2 years?
Golf clubs are the only thing I have that depreciate faster than my car !
How about a comparison test of Takomo 101t vs. Calyx?
Ping fitting, proven, customer service, resale value.
Is that a V8 powered golf cart? Sounds amazing!!
V12 lol
what would the price be for the Takomo 101T if you went only heads and then had them fitted at SGGT on average
Heads only are EUR 400,- for the set. Rest depends on prices at SGGT...
Now test the Maltby TS1 IM, Maltby TS3, or Maltby TS4
Not surprised that the i530 PW went farther, it's a 42° loft. The 101T PW is 46°.
The 101T 9-iron is 41°.
Yes mate mentioned in my pinned comment ⛳️🙌🏼 thanks for watching
@JamesRobinsonGolf saw the pinned comment after I posted.
I'll have 101Ts in my bag for next year, largely due to your reviews 👍
I definitely lost a club in length when I switched to the 101T's.
What are the lofts?
The Ping looks quite nice but 4 degrees stronger in the PW than the 101Ts. (42 Vs 46 degrees)
Was about to say the same thing
It still went higher and further than the Tacomo
@@finnguzz6448 order Retro Lofts on the Pings. Something they offer. Finally newer player distance irons really more on decent angle than spin to stop the ball. There's a reason the Pings fly higher then the Takomos.
@@liambarabas8947also ran out a lot more and less consistent front to back
I would rather go to PXG and get fit for the 0211 xcor2. Probably same price as Tokomo but custom fit.
Are those Nike Slingshots in the blue bag?
If i was going to buy new clubs out of any brand it would be Ping
Would like to see the difference between the 101s and the 101t as they look so similar to myself
The offset on the 101s is ridiculous. That's the huge difference.
...and stronger lofted.
Custom fit say the U tubers … can’t do that with direct to consumer. Pings looked more forgiving and longer which helps most golfers.
Why does the head speed number change so much on that sim ? Some read 79mph which is what you would expect yhen some at 91mph.. got to be a mis read and alter the results
Yeah I see that as well. Luckily the cameras pick
Up the ball data as well, the guys are working on the algorithm for clubhead 🙌🏼⛳️
A bit of an off topic question... @jamesrobinson, what company make your joggers.? They look great. 👌🏼
Puma mate
Takomo...again...? And still 101...what about 201, 301...against zx7/5... A little tired of 101 now 🤣
42 loft on Ping vs 46 degrees on Takomo in the PW.
My brother - the 101t’s are traditional lofts, the 101s are strong
@@Iamwrongbut 101ts are not traditional lofts. The 7 iron is 32 degrees. Traditional 7 iron is 34 at minimum.
Does it matter whether you hit a 9 or pw? Surely you choose the club that will do the job.
We should be doing to the big golf brands what we are currently doing to auto manufacturers. They insist on increasing pricing at an alarming rate then we just won’t buy your products until you come to your senses.
Give me Takomo! Think of the lessons.
Wedge - Ping is 4 degree stronger
7 - Ping is 3 degree stronger
4 - Ping is 3 degree stronger
I got some older Callaway’s this year and my numbers dropped for distances then compared lofts to my player improvement irons (x-16) and my “newer” (razr x forged) are 3-4 degrees weaker. But I hold more greens and don’t have the fliers
@@davidallender9158 Ping offers Retro lofts.
was the 4iron 101 or 101t sorry if you mentioned it
What are the lofts of the PW
Pings are stronger by a few degree mate
@@JamesRobinsonGolfahhh ok, I was wondering why. I feel this new trend of stronger lofts is bad for golf… Great video
All the evidence suggests Takomo is a fine product. Question for me is around taking a risk of buying without a fitting.
That notch on the back of the Ping is off-putting. I don't like the look at all. Not that aesthetics should be that important, but it does affect my purchases.
Can’t see the notch at address so it should not be an issue. I’ve always thought it was gimmicky myself so I see your point.
@@Tom-ok2rh I think it's to remove weight from the heel, but yeah.. it's just kinda goofy looking
:P
The story is....are the Pings twice as good? If you like'm good for you, but that's a lot to pay for a logo.
Dude, I want your sim... the way the ball pops up on the tee. Fucking Brilliant! lol!!!
Lofts are about 2.5-3 degrees stronger with the Pings.
Try the new Haywood v2 or PD1 irons
The problem is fitting the Tokomo?
Yes mate definitely
Whenever you switch to the indoor numbers, I always watch "head speed" on your sim.....crazy how much it jumps around with similar swings, from 78 to 100 mph in this video, with similar ball speeds....strange.
Yeah head speed is part of the algorithm we are working on. Luckily enough it works out the ball data more accurately
Wesley Bryan is sponsored by Takomo... He hit a course record in a recent PGA tournament.. so no, big brand clubs aren't necessary
I came to mention the difference in lofts but see others have beaten me to it. Schoolboy error Mr Robinson. No tea for you tonight.
Can’t compare “x” iron to “x” iron anymore…jacked lofts on a pew doesn’t make a club longer. I play my irons off of a 46/47° pw or 41/42° 9 iron, the marketing is shit these days.
I like the face of the Ping because it looks like there’s more grooves.
I loved my i525 so much I bought i230 on a deal
Now I’ve got a summer and a winter set and my 230 cost me the same NEW as the takomos
You should re-do this video. You should be comparing the 101 vs i530 as far as lofts go. A little surprising you didn’t see the difference in lofts
James the ping PW loft Is 42 the Takomo is 46.
The Ping pitching wedge head speed was faster and the Takomo was slower. Were you deliberately doing that? I mean C'mon.
Ping all day! I bought the Takomo 101u 2 iron and that’s as close as I’m getting to the Takomo Band wagon
The technology is so similar. I’ll take the Takomo all day.
You would get your money back with ping.
Only one choice here. Takomo. Ping just hits too far and you can't control the gaps. Nearly all Pro's don't use the pings. Like 3 do out of 37 ping players.
Cant save a fortune if paying fitting fees?
A lot of places wave the fee if you spend money on shafts or sets. SGGT do 👍🏼
Good to know
On the 4 irons you swung the Takomo at an average of 95Mph. You swung the Ping at 100MPH. That's the difference. Was Ping paying you or do you not think club head speed effects ball speed and ultimately carry and DOA? Seriously.
Can you stop with the captions like “Clear Winner “?
The 101T is 46 loft. The ping is 42. 101T 9 iron is 41
Which club are you even talking about?
Since he is only hitting 2 irons the takomo 101T and the ping i530. I guess I'm talking about those.
lol 😂😂😂👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I don’t care the name. I care does it work for me. Too many people get caught up with name brand.
