Tim mentions the ghost costume scene seeming out of character. The thing is, it actually ties into everything else in the film. It's called Halloween, the season when everyone wears scary costumes. Michael is a messed up person who takes that idea too far. He first kills when he wears the clown mask. Then as an adult he goes out of his way to steal a new mask. Then he wears the sheet. Finally, he sets up a haunted house with the dead bodies and the grave. Notice that he panics when his mask comes off. The whole thing is about the power he gets from embodying something that isn't human. The sheet scene therefore perfectly ties into that theme.
You just blew my fucking mind. - Tim
@@kindafunny Glad to hear it, Tim. I thought you were spot on about the day time scenes - I can't think of any other film that comes close to being this scary in broad day light.
I hope you eventually come back around to do all the films from Halloween 2 onwards. They are mostly garbage but fun to talk about all the same.
Shoutout to Cameron Kennedy, look at what he can do with more than 2 days notice 🤣🤣
I actually looked up what the intro was and finished it in 24 hours lol
@@CameronKen you're a magician
@@CameronKen amazing
An all-time Jamie Lee classic...Freaky Friday. Don't even @ me lol
You’re not wrong bud 😂
John carpenter directed the shit out of this film the way he focuses on Michaels mask is so creepy. The music is so phenomenal and Donald Pleasence is awesome. Kinda funny will not give this film the credit it deserves because it’s not a “modern day movie”
So many movies steals from this movie.
John Carpenter is a master at his craft. If anyone else is interested, the Blank Check podcast is doing a breakdown of all his movies, and this episode of theirs was great. They did a whole breakdown of the slasher genre history and everything. Super knowledgeable about movies and filmmaking over there.
I think the Michael and Jason being interchangeable, hulking killing machines might be a pop cultural reframing of the characters. MM isn't hulking (at least traditionally...I know RZ's version is). He's just a regular guy. If he didn't have his mask on, you'd walk right past him and not even think twice.
Hell, that's even the point of setting it on Halloween.
You can walk by him and think he's just a dude dressed for Halloween.
You see Jason and you immediately know something ain't right lol.
Guys please try and get Deadmeat on podcast. He and his fiancé do so much work and just have so much knowledge on alot of films in this genre
This is my favorite horror movie and franchise. This movie is easily in my Top 10 favorites of all time
This film is flawless, it's hard to believe it's an indie film. MVP of the day is Cameron Kennedy as usual
One of the coolest intros ever. How has Tim never seen the Pumpkin on the cover?
As for if teenagers think Scream is good. I’m 21 now, but watched it for the first time when I was 16 or so, and I have always loved it for all the same reasons you guys go over in the show, and most of my friends all have a lot of respect for it still today.
For me this is my comfort movie, one of those I can just turn on and get lost in. I agree it's impossible to separate the film from what came after it but the no-budget charm is infectious and unmissable. Watching this with an actual critical lens this time made me miss when films used to use real colored lighting to convey a mood or a time of day and night without heavy digital grading. The heavy blues to convey shadows and natural moonlight are so amazing mixed with the mask. A meticulous simple creeper that just keeps aging beautifully. Hopefully we get to see a In Review of the other timelines in the series at some point because Halloween 2 & 3 are worth talking about.
Hey Elyse I’m 19 and I loved scream when I did the in review with u guys lol. I thought it was so interesting how it was people that knew about horror movies in a movie.
The intro to this might be a top 3 for me in all of In Review.
It’s so hard for me to hear any complaints about this movie it’s easily 1 of my top 5 movies of all time, because I like suspense & thriller more than horror. I wish you guys were also watching The Thing which I think is more horror. For me those two movies EASILY make John Carpenter better than Wes Craven at his best
This review hurt my heart lol
It was hard to listen to, especially if this actually was happening in my neighborhood, it would be terrifying,
John Carpenter is the GOAT
I know it isn’t canon anymore but it’s absolutely criminal to skip Halloween 2
I challenge anyone in this review to say that Halloween isn't scary after watching it alone and in a dark room. So much of what is scary about it is the atmosphere - the deliberate pacing, noticing things in the background, small sounds. It's not about cheap jump scares, which I think is what everyone here is really talking about when they say it's not scary. If you watch it with friends making fun of how cheap it looks, or while you're doing something else, of course it's not going to be scary. The scariest moments aren't the kills, it's the stuff like Michael parking his car on the corner of the street in the far background of the shot while all the other characters are totally oblivious.
Another criticism here is that the film is simple. The thing is, that may be true on a superficial plot level, but it's one of the few slasher films that has a real purpose and point of view. So much of it is about voyeurism and putting the viewer in the POV of Michael, from the opening to the closing montage of shots where we see the different rooms and the house from the street, and Michael's breathing gets heavier on the soundtrack.Note too that Michael panics when his mask comes off. It's the anonymity and the being hidden by the mask that gives him his power.
Not to mention, the idea of Michael being supernatural is something that modern viewers maybe won't appreciate. It's meant to be a shock. It's only until the very end when he survives being shot through the window that you're supposed to become really aware of that. That's something else that a modern viewer with an awareness of these films having a million sequels probably won't get.
This is one of the few horror films that can truly be considered a work of art. The 2018 film doesn't get the original at all, and the idea that it's scarier is laughable. It's got more gore and more jump scares, but it doesn't leave a haunting impression on the mind the way that the 1978 original still does.
Edit: Tim gets it.
To be clear this movie isn’t that scary but does it really matter? The scariest movies aren’t the best. I agree though being on your phone and not paying attention to movies in a bad watching environment I wouldn’t care for it either.
You nailed it....it doesn't make me jump and cringe like current horror movies with sensory overload but just those subtle bits where Michael is just WATCHING Annie in the laundry room....it gives me goosebumps. Its the difference between constant jump scares and simmering tension. And yes, agree that watching this movie while doing something else is not the way too appreciate that suspense.
I thought that was Kevin. 😂 I just glanced at my phone while working and was like that's odd Kevin is on the show. The brimless hat strikes again.
Elyse, I’m 22 and can confirm that Scream is definitely awesome… mainly because Matthew Lillard is a legend, but it’s still a super fun watch.
Glad you guys loved it, 43 years on and it still resonates with audiences, a timeless masterpiece
IMO the other mistake I think you make in this movie based off your pop culture knowledge is you think Michael Meyers is the killer he’s not check the credits the killer is The Shape a supernatural entity & the blank stare of child Michael’s meant to show he’s just a blank vessel for the Shape
MORE James & Elyse? Yes. Do Insidious In Review!
Hell yea, so excited for this review run, can't wait for the new Halloween to release.
My all time favorite movie, John Carpenter is a legend. He also did the music for and directed Christine, one of my favorite Stephen King adaptations.
"A segment I refuse to name" lmao
If someone from Kinda Funny reads this please tell Kris Anka I love his Miles Morales #32 cover
I first saw Halloween when I was 4 and it terrified me and made me fall in love with horror films. Ever since it is tradition that my mom and I marathon all the films every October. Also my head canon is 1, the og 2, and H20.
Kris is always awesome on these
Great intro 👍🏻
That intro was incredible!!!
My best friend got me into this franchise leading up to Halloween 2018 and I am in DEEP.
54:48 earful, Nick.. Not a mouthful 😂
YES my all time favourite horror movie, and the one that started my love for the genre.
Let's goooo! One of the only horror series I've ever watched 😂
They all missed the point of the reveal of child Michael. It’s suppose to be a shock that a child would kill their sister.
Great stuff...it tears me up inside to hear that Halloween is dated (its my second favorite movie) but y'all are probably somewhat right, hahaha. I've got a ton of nostalgia for this.
Also "Laurie, Linda, Lindsay, Annie, and Loomis". Forgot that the sheriff's name is "Leigh Bracket" which is as unisex an "L" name as it gets. So yeah, confusing. 😂
I love that they decided to make a new canon sequel to Halloween and they just called it Halloween
nice
Nice I just watched this movie yesterday it’s so damn good, I’ve been watching a horror movie everyday since the month started, gotta think about what to watch today 🤔
Dope intro
Im 23 and ive loved Scream since i saw it as a kid.
Apparently in a novelization of Halloween Myers learned how to drive by watching Loomis from all the times he drove him to hearings
My daughter is 18 and loved scream, last year. I dunno if she’s watched again this year.
Did they not mention the scene where Loomis is talking and you can see Micheal driving in the background?
The Shatner mask looks like Kevin Spacey
Good intro
37:44 shout out to Animorphs
True Lies and Freaky Friday are my touchstones for Jaime Lee Curtis
YESSSS LETS GOOOOOOO!!!!
20 minutes in and there’s so much disrespect! Lol
Wait…did Nick say it’s not a good movie? Did I hear that right? I hate this XD haha
My favourite film of all time by my favourite director and my favourite composer, absolute masterpiece which will be getting watched 14/10 Along with H18 before HK in the cinema
prem-jack......god damn it nick lmao
Prom Night is where I first remember Jamie Lee Curtis
I'll be watching Halloween Kills on Peacock, because I'd much rather watch a movie in my own home and not with a bunch of loud strangers.
I usually let bad takes slide on this show, but to think the scream movies are better than this is just going too far. 😆
I know right. Not even close then again these are the same people with a fucked up Spider-Man list I kinda expected it
@@joefayant6143 While I don't agree with their Spider-Man list, I definitely agree that the Scream movies are all vastly superior to the Halloween movies. Carpenter improved & evolved. But I understand that Halloween walked so Scream could run.
I need to watch this film it’s been too long
The thing is I'm never going into a slasher expecting straight horror no matter the era. I don't think slashers have ever really been super scary, its the suspense that pulls me in. I'm there for the kills and the campiness (pun not intended). Its the parodies like Scream and Fear Street that deliver good stories on top of that by retroactively using slasher tropes as a tool to help push that story along.
No mention of dean cundey or Deborah hill?
While I agree this movie isn't perfect, these guys realllyyy seemed to miss a lot of details the movie presents.
If it doesn’t have cars and stupid action then their brains can’t understand details
I'd never seen this movie and really enjoyed it. Very creepy and unsettling
I saw someone famous wear a brimless hat this past week, but damn i forgot who!!! It must have been someone associated with NFL bc i watch that a lot.
I learned from Chris that clocked=registered
My touchstone to Jamie lee Curtis is freaky Friday. Never had seen this movie before until this in review lol
Totally Totally Totally 🤣
I don’t know why you’re limiting this series to just this and Halloween 2018. Why not do the whole series? You guys did for the Spider-Man stuff.
Rob Zombie's iterations of Halloween are an abomination! I try each year to forget they were ever made!
The ejeculantern
$8 million dollars Joey?!
CHARLESTON CHEWS ARE GREAT. DON'T YOU DARE, JOEY.
It’s tough to make it through this simply because of the way they pronounce “Halloween”. I can’t.
I'm 21 and think Scream is good
If you don't like the first Halloween movie, you don't need to do this in-review. it's becoming a theme where everyone is negative or positive and we see a passionate argument or disagreement. One say negative thing and suddenly everyone agrees
This film just feels very slow. The build up takes two-thirds of the movie. It very much does seem like Michael would much rather stalk the townspeople than actually kill anyone.
First time watching this movie and I was disappointed, but I think it's because I'm comparing it to scary movies from the 80s. Still a good movie though.
I watched it on Halloween a few years back for the first time and thought it was boring as hell with nothing happening until like the last 20 minutes of the film. I am not a big horror fan anyway but people revere this film and I don’t get it after I watched it. I didn’t find The Shining great either.
@@Darro85 I think it's simple for props. I feel like a lot of 80s horror movies set things up for modern movies we've gotten over the years
@@Darro85 Sorry to say but if you find Halloween and The Shining boring, then you didn't get them at all
@@franjo9056 "Since there is precious little character or plot development to pass the time between stalking sequences, one tends to wish the killer would get on with it. Presumably, Carpenter imagines he's building up spine-tingling anticipation, but his techniques are so transparent and laborious that the result is attenuation rather than tension."
This is a quote from a review at the time and pretty much sums up my thoughts on Halloween. You can disagree with that but it is pretty much what I felt after watching it. Like I said in my original post, I am not a big horror/slasher guy although there are a few I really like (Scream for example).
Let’s fucking go. Let’s get that carpenter in review. This is the only good movie in the series. 3 is good and what the sequels were supposed to be. Nobody gives a shit about white mask boy
Why is that kinda funny just thinks any movie that was released before the year 2000 is old and cheesy and bad. Nick is the only one that actually has a normal mentality on this movie. It’s a classic and started a lot of horror movie tropes .Sorry there was no fast cars and bad dialogue to make a movie you guys like. And this film will always be scarier then Scream. Halloween is a serious movie. Scream doesn’t even try to be scary. It’s more of a comedy
Lol scream is trash r u kidding me
One of the most zoomer takes I’ve seen. Beside they’re lord of the rings they literally only like marvel films.
First!
Fucking Millennials. No one on this panel was alive when this movie came out. It's easy for them to right this off as out dated (they think Hayden Panettiere is brilliant) but the horror films of the 70's are by far superior horror films than anything today. Films like Halloween, Texas Chainsaw and Carrie were simple stories and didn't rely on exterior elements to promote terror. While other films like The Exorcist and The Omen were psychological horror films that relied on story. Spare me if you think Scream is better.
Kinda funny has the worst film takes besides nick stick to marvel movies.
