+tiffsaver 100%... I don't think any actor at that time would have been even close for the part of Luke Skywalker.... Harrison Ford was also the right guy for the part of Han... but I do always think if Kurt Russell got the part he would have been just as good... Hamill I think was literally the only actor for Luke..
+Tom Rice If that had been the case, that it was Russell cast instead of Harrison Ford, I wouldn't have immersed my young brain (at that time) with the film. To me, beyond the droids, the balls-to-the-wall princess and the desert 'farmboy' Luke, it was Ford's Han Solo that drew me in from the beginning to the end of Jedi. Russell is a good actor but Harrison's laconic, swaggering, sensual cowboy-like persona caught my attention! lol. It would have been an entirely different chemistry between the triad, which may or may not have worked, but I like what we now have in cinematic perpetuity.
Odyssey Mosaic How do you know? You claim Russell wouldn't have drawn you in.. but you have no proof... it was quite clear he would have pulled off the same swag.. Kurt Russell is a better actor than Ford.. and they both have the same characteristics... You were drawn into the character of Han Solo, not Harrison Ford.. you would have been just as drawn into Kurt.. if he was the one and only Han Solo, without any clue that Ford was up for the part... think about it.. You wouldn't have thought.. Damn, I wish Han Solo was Harrison Ford. Again, I said Ford was the right man for the part over Russell, but Russell would have been nearly just as good... Name me one person that would have been half as good for Luke Skywalker... You can't, because without Mark Hamill Star Wars wouldn't be as epic as it is now. That's fact... his performance is what makes the trilogy.. going from boy, to young adult, to man. His transformation throughout the trilogy is incredible, he plays a different character in each film... Harrison is the same in every movie, not a bad thing... but again something I feel Russell could have easily pulled off. Han is comic relief, and just cool, which Russell is known for, and could have easily done.. possibly better (see Escape from NY, Big Trouble little China, The Thing, Overboard etc.)... but to each his own.
+mr t Yeah, "deformed" is a huge exaggeration, but his face did noticeably change. If you watch Empire, he does look very different than he did in A New Hope. He's not as fresh faced and handsome as he was in the first movie. Don't get me wrong- he's not exactly hideous in Empire, or anything like that, and he's certainly doesn't look "deformed". Hell, I would probably still do Empire Luke. But yeah, his face does look more rough and his nose more crooked.
That was some pretty nice acting. I mean, normally I don't think too much about it because I see him just as «Luke». But I never actually paid attention to his actual expressive range. He was definitely not only chosen because of his child face but also because he was actually a talented actor. There are many ways to blow up an audition like that.
Yeah, you could tell at the end from his expression he knew he had just nailed it. I imagine he walked to the restroom or an empty hall for a victory dance.
Mark Hamill is perfectly fit as Luck and Hayden is perfectly fit as Anakin Skywalker. Luke is cute quiet guy and Anakin is handsome and aggressive guy. I love both of them.
+0Fear Yeah, the first Star Wars movie went through four pr five different drafts, each significantly different from the last From what I've read, Lucas held the auditions for the third draft of Star Wars. In the third draft, Luke was actually a lot more savvy about things and very intellectual.
ahlalalalaaa Actually. that happened with the scripts for episodes II and III, where Lucas only started writing a few months before filming and hadn't even finished the script until two days before filming. In fact, even the actors wouldn't see those scripts at all until the fay of filming, and even then they would only receive the pages for the scenes they would be filming that day. So yeah, a lot about the prequels makes so much sense when you know that about them. As for episode 1, that one actually did go through a couple of drafts, although each draft actually made the story worse. The first draft actually wasn't that bad, and Jar Jar Binks was wise and intelligent and talked like a normal person.
+0Fear Well, the scenes for auditions for a movie are never in the finished movie because if they would be, the actors who don't get the job could spread details about the plot.
Sofia A Wow, that does explain a lot about the prequels. :/ Too bad they didn't leave the Jar Jar character the way he originally was, because the final incarnation of his character really ruined that movie for so many people. Myself included. Jar Jar was the nail in the Star Wars coffin for me for quite some time.
Rufus Slothkowski I'm pretty sure since he was used to constantly read lines for the auditionees, he got a feel for the character Lucas wanted and ran away with it. Plus Harrison was in George Lucas' directorial debut film: American Graffiti.
this is a perfect audition. it's so hard to show earnestness in your acting and he just had it. he communicates so directly and clearly and his face is perfect with those big eyes. good reactions. good emotion variance. a film editor can see exactly how to cut around his facial expressions. to have the acting, look and believable earnestness is pretty much an impossible combination for actors. he lacked edge, but here it's better to play your strengths than pretend to be someone you're not. the Luke character could have used some edge here and there in the movies, but the character became sorta this underdog hero you were rooting for because he wasn't obviously a badass so it still worked very well. maybe more people related because he was a guy next door type.
Harrison Ford really shined here even though I can't see his face. His voice is so emotive. It makes whatever he says sounds that much more fascinating!
Thanks for uploading! I think he nailed the audition, for me he was the best choice for the role. He was so handsome and sincere. Here, he seems more like the ROTJ's Luke, wiser, more mature and serious. I think he did a good job in the movies, though, because he was able to develop a character arc, from whiny to wreckless to finally be a respected leader, feared even by the Emperor himself. If you take a look at his performances before and after SW, you'll see a good actor, not only a good-looking one. It's a shame he got typecast.
Alex Gonzalez I've seen a few of them, such as "The Big Red One", that he filmed between Empire and Jedi, and "Slipstream", and some others, but in the 80's, he mostly did theatre, with very good critical reviews. I wish I could have seen him on stage. But yeah, he didn't became a huge star because he was typecast as a hero, and he wanted so hard to proof himself as an actor, that he went to Broadway instead of staying in Hollywood and doing the same role over and over again.
What's great is that Harrison ford never had to audition for Han Solo. Since he read off solo lines for the Luke auditions, George Lucas was like "what the hell, you want to be in this movie?"
No, Lucas had him read the lines for Han because he wasn't doing anything at the time. He ended up being Han when Lucas realized how good it would be to have him do it. He was in Lucas' other movie, American graffiti. So he already knew Harrison Ford.
+AlexLarson7 It boiled down to two teams according to Harrison, Mark and Carrie. The other team had Kurt Russel as Han Solo and William Katt as Luke Skywalker. Kurt said he was impatient and left to do another movie because George was unsure if that team was in.
What I find strange is how subdued and soft-spoken both Carrie and Mark are in their auditions. I always had the impression that Auditions used a lot of dramatics and emotion. I actually think it makes it seem like a much more realistic conversation, but it doesn't showcase their acting range.
Believability is the most important aspect in film. Almost anybody can commit to yelling and sound okay, talking normally and not sounding fake is much more difficult. A space opera/fantasy, in particular, is definitely something you want to hire naturalistic and believable actors for.
The guy at the end had to clear his throat to speak. That says a lot to me. I believe Mark had the job before this audition but they had to see if he could act. They would have been sitting there preying he wouldn't stammer, forget his lines or create a bad reaction from Harrison. They were instead blown away, as i was. Even Harrison starts to act and sound like Han solo a short way into the audition because Mark is pushing him. Epic, amazing audition and he is still my No1 hero. Always...
I'm realizing how much I had underrated Mark Hamill over the years. Seeing this audition vs Kurt Russell's and William Katt's, it's not even close. He just carries a seriousness and a sense of justice for the character's newfound purpose.
Correct. It was how good he was and his chemistry with Mark and Carrie. It definitely helps when you get to act as Han over and over in other people's auditions. :)
ever since ive seen mark hammil AKA luke skywalker in star wars ive always had one of the biggest crushes on him when he was younger (and still love him just as much in the movies)!
+Crimson Rain I keep thinking Dane DeHaan...and how ironic he's playing the lead in a film version of a comic book that unintentionally predicted concepts in SW! #Valerian
+Crimson Rain damn, michael j fox and mark hamill are my two favourite actors ,one had parkins other had a car accident and his face changed, whoever ı love gets into trouble,ı should stop loving people
züleyha ceylan damn man, you sound evil lmao.. it's not you.. I loved both of them too.. I loved Heath Ledger.. I loved The Crow.. after it happened I loved Robin Williams I loved Christopher Reeve.. Bad things happen to everyone.. even people like Superman, Marty McFly, and Luke Skywalker.. Hamill turned out ok though.. I actually like how he looks post surgery more than pre-accident lol. Adds to the evolution/charactrer development of Luke Skywalker.. really adds depth, and believability to Lukes transition into a man throughout the trilogy..
just watched so many other auditions for this role and mark hamill was the only one who put the right kind of inflection on the words that fit and made it seem like a normal, ACTUAL conversation seriously how was anyone else even in the running for this part it was such a clear choice omg
In this audition, it seems that Luke knows a lot more than he did in the movie. Plus, once they’re stuck on the Death Star, Luke is able to persuade Han go help rescue Princess Leia by simply telling him “She’s rich.” Never mind that whatever wealth she might have had was blown up when Alderaan was destroyed.
really surprised with hamill's performance. this luke is much more mature and down-to-earth than the one we got in the end and some of his dialogue seems more star trek like than star wars. but it's still a hell of an experience to be able to actually see this footage
I think they wanted to show Luke maturing throughout the years so had him play a slightly immature kid in the first SW until he becomes the wise Jedi in the 3rd installment.
The "fear is their greatest weapon" line. Mark Hamil can still quote it off the top of his head. Probably because how hard it was to memorize it in the first place.
Still, you have to admit it would be almost impossible to try to find a person like Mark in his youth. I remember him and I see this pure soul, this young man, pure of heart. It is just impossible to emulate. And he also was a great actor. On the other hand, to me this generation of kids are all fucked up, and they don't keep their magic alive, so I am hoping for an adult protagonist hopefully, whu would hopefully retain that "magic" inside of him.
He was my first crush since I was born, 4 years old. I had a huge crush on him that I made up a stupid song of my own dedicated just for him. To this day, my family still sings it to me, and I'm so embarrassed.
I like it. Ford asks if he's blocking Hamill and ends up being out of the shot for the I entire audition! At least you can't accuse him of stealing the lime light.
or the film. But thank god he ended up getting the part. Apaprently after having him read for Han so many times george was like i can't see anyone else as the role
The chemistry between the two was definitely there. The way they bounced each line of dialogue to each other and the pauses in between was on full display.
Unlike Katt and the others, Hamill is really working with his facial expressions on the character's reactions to Ford's lines. And he builds at the end, giving the scene some shape.
3:25 is where he really starts to get into character, in my opinion. At 3:39 he inclines the pitch of his voice at the end of his sentence, which he did somewhat often in the first movie. Then at 3:46 he does his signature head-snap. Just some things I noticed :-p
Actually it was. If you look at the other auditions, there is a ton of repetition. In Rinzler's book there was a quote from Mark Hamill saying how he studied the bit of script he got to the point of memorization
No wonder he got the part. He was perfect. Having watched William Katt, Kurt Russell and Robby Benson auditions for Luke it just emphasises how much better Hamill was in his audition and how right he was for the part. Lucas chose the right person.
Mark Hamill IS Star Wars! Without him there IS NO Star Wars! I NEVER seen the newer Star Wars. I will watch the two new Star Wars since they brought back the old crew! RIP Carrie Fisher! 😕❤👍👍
Harrison was brought in to only read for the actors who were trying out. He wasn't up for Han Solo until later when Lucas decided he'd be a good match.
Mark was sooooooo cute!!!! I love how he looks when they r done!! Funny how things changed from drafts to the actual script huh??? The death stars blows up ORGANA MAJOR.... droids r still called robot!! The princess was in Alderaan!!! And luke was soooo serious and calm!!!! Thank you so much for posting this!!!
Hamil has an accident ... which changed his nose structure ... tough luck. He was naturally very handsome. I would have marked him as competition at about 3 stars. >_
Mark Hamill nailed it! And I'm really curious if this is before they cast Harrison or not. Cause if this is just him being asked to read lines for assistance, no wonder they picked him. And it's really interesting to see the change they made with Luke's character here. His demeanor and personality is the same but his knowledge and maturity is very different than the final cut. I like this version of Luke but I also like how young they made him seem. Luke is supposed to be only 19 or 20 and that's what makes his heroism so cool. Thanks for posting!
This is the page owner. In honor of the jackass that bothered me with notifications saying he would keep posting to hit 1,000 Comments. This is #1,000. You lose. You get nothing (except a channel ban). Good day sir.
He fits Luke better than anyone could. Mark Hamill is Luke Skywalker literally.
Yes, he is. Unfortunately, Mark Hamill never step out of Luke Skywalker's shadow.

Until Disney destroyed Luke Skywalker.
Mark-Carrie-Harrison is so clearly better in every way than Cindy-Katt-Russell ... why did Lucas even feel like its a close race between the two ?
now i understand why Hamill got the role. he had that boyish excitability that Luke's back story calls for.
I feel he has more of a adultish vibe than boyish, boyish would've been robby benson.
Yep and why also Harrison Ford got the role of Han Solo
Hamill had ALL the qualities that Skywalker embodied. The perfect match of actor and part.
+tiffsaver 100%... I don't think any actor at that time would have been even close for the part of Luke Skywalker.... He totally nailed it! And how CUTE is he??
Lemon Drops IKR? xD
It's really strange that his acting career didn't take off after star wars. I thought he'd become a huge star like Harrison ford.
mr t Then again, it just makes Luke Skywalker's character so much more special

2:52 I love Harrison's little laugh after the mind control line. :'D He is literally thinking "this is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard."
Harrison thought the script dialogue was ridiculous...it didn't make sense to him.
Mark was good-looking and genuine and actually tried putting something into his audition. Thank God he was chosen!

This plays out like a game of chess with alot of the story points. Mark figured out his character very early, Harrison settled into his.
Is so cool that he's known for being in one of the greatest movie trilogys and as one of the greatest voice actors ever. Too talented
Mark was the best in expressiveness.
he's the only one who nailed "I think there are some things we should talk about."

This is a GREAT audition... Mark Hamill hit this so so perfectly... A good example for other actors reading on camera
Mark looks so much more like Sebastian Stan here as if he didn't already IM SHOOK😵😍
He didn't even know he was gonna play the protagonist atthis point, he assumed Harrison Ford was the main guy in the film LOL
I like it. Ford asks if he's blocking Hamill and ends up being out of the shot for the I entire audition! At least you can't accuse him of stealing the lime light.
It wasn't his audition. He wasn't supposed to be in the shot.
or the film. But thank god he ended up getting the part. Apaprently after having him read for Han so many times george was like i can't see anyone else as the role
Ford was just there to read lines with auditioning actors...turned out he'd also prep himself for a legendary role.
Outstanding why he got it!!
.... and carrie Fisher got it too!
Did he call him Hans?
Hans Olo
+Nover Liginamite German Star Wars :)
Ryan Doyle I heard it too. XD
All of the names are fixed to prevent leaks.
What? He`s called Han too in the german version
The chemistry between the two was definitely there. The way they bounced each line of dialogue to each other and the pauses in between was on full display.
Imagine Star Wars without every one of these legends.
It’s crazy to come back and watch this after seeing Rise of Skywalker. I love Mark Hamill so much
After seeing this, I have more respect for the way Hamil portrayed Luke.
Hamill's performance as the Joker all these years is testament to his acting abilities. Love this vid! Thanks for posting!
2:28 Hans?
My friend Scott Greenberg and I thank you for posting this video. This was awesome.
Unlike Katt and the others, Hamill is really working with his facial expressions on the character's reactions to Ford's lines. And he builds at the end, giving the scene some shape.
What do you mean by building at the end and "shape"?
Aw crap. Mark was so great in this scene and also so cute... I just...
And he still is ofc. His voice as Joker is perfect ^^
Well he nailed that audition faster then he bulls-eyed womp rats back home in his T 16
He was so perfect to be luke that no one could see him doing other role
3:25 is where he really starts to get into character, in my opinion. At 3:39 he inclines the pitch of his voice at the end of his sentence, which he did somewhat often in the first movie. Then at 3:46 he does his signature head-snap. Just some things I noticed :-p
Excellent interpretation. Great actor underrated.
@lonstar70 If your reading for the auditioning actors they sometimes don't want you to be very big, they want you to tone down the acting...
yeah i hope he gets the part
Where's R2-D2's audition?
beep
Waaayyy better than the others.
I love Robby Benson butl I can see why Hamill got the part, by far the best audition!
He has so much conviction here, like when the parts he speaks real fast through the dialogue like it's normal and he's in space already.
"Hans, maybe you should just drop us off." LOL
Mark nailed that. He's very good at facially personifying emotion.
4:07 I'm gonna be fucking rich.
thefran901 lol yes that look tho
It was definitely a look of "yep, nailed it!".
At 4:08, Mark Hamill is thinking to himself; "Man, I just NAILED that!"
Cool to see how it all started :)
"She's part of the Royal Family. They won't get any information from her, she knows the art of mind control!" Brilliant.
Did he get the role or what?
* Facepalm *
*Joke*
they asked him to come back to try again...30 years later.
***** I love how you had to explain that was a joke.
Mark Hamill IS Star Wars! Without him there IS NO Star Wars! I NEVER seen the newer Star Wars. I will watch the two new Star Wars since they brought back the old crew! RIP Carrie Fisher! 😕❤👍👍
Glad they rewrote this.
These two!!! Nobody does it better. ⭐️ 🌟 ⭐️ 💫 ⭐️
Love how they're using the third draft of Episode IV's screen play. Nice piece of Star Wars history
There's going to be applause in the theaters when Hamill, Ford, and Fisher appear in The Force Awakens.
+Nonamearisto Applause? Hopefully the dialogue on screen won't be vital because no one's hearing it
Steven Fallon well regarding Lukes Dialogue xDD
The sound of them leather chairs gives me a wood every time.
She knows the art... of *MIND-CONTROL?!*
They didn't break her, did they?
Mark Hamill nailed it! And I'm really curious if this is before they cast Harrison or not. Cause if this is just him being asked to read lines for assistance, no wonder they picked him. And it's really interesting to see the change they made with Luke's character here. His demeanor and personality is the same but his knowledge and maturity is very different than the final cut. I like this version of Luke but I also like how young they made him seem. Luke is supposed to be only 19 or 20 and that's what makes his heroism so cool. Thanks for posting!
